The most resilient way to invest in artificial intelligence is to make diversified stock and bond funds your core, then add a deliberately sized AI allocation spread across semiconductors, software, infrastructure, power and non-U.S. markets. Do not assume an ETF is diversified because its name contains “AI”: examine its actual holdings, overlap with mega-cap technology, sector and country weights, fees, turnover, index rules and legal diversification status before buying.
Why AI exposure can quietly become a Nasdaq-100 bet
Artificial-intelligence enthusiasm is concentrated in a relatively small group of very large technology companies. A broad technology fund, a growth fund and an AI-themed ETF can therefore own many of the same businesses. Buying all three may look diversified on a brokerage screen while leaving the portfolio dependent on the same earnings forecasts, cloud spending cycle, chip supply chain and regulatory environment.
Concentration creates two separate risks. The first is company risk: a disappointing product launch, margin pressure, litigation or management error can hurt a large holding. The second is theme risk: if AI spending slows, financing costs rise or investors reduce the premium assigned to growth stocks, several holdings can fall together. Diversification reduces concentration risk, but it cannot prevent losses.

The SEC-filed prospectus for the iShares A.I. Innovation and Tech Active ETF (BAI), filed in 2025, says the fund normally invests at least 80% of assets in U.S. and non-U.S. AI, technology and technology-related companies. The prospectus also says the fund may concentrate in technology industries and is classified as “non-diversified” under the Investment Company Act of 1940. A non-diversified fund can have a larger portfolio impact from a small number of issuers than a broadly diversified fund.

Use a three-layer portfolio design
1. A broad-market core
Start with funds that own a wide range of companies rather than a single theme. A U.S. total-market fund can provide exposure across company sizes and industries. An international or global equity fund adds companies whose revenues, currencies, regulators and economic cycles differ from those in the United States. Check the fund’s actual country breakdown: a product marketed as global may still have a heavy U.S. allocation.
The core should remain the part of the portfolio you can hold if AI valuations decline for several years. Compare its number of holdings, largest-position weight, sector distribution, international share, tracking method and expense ratio with the AI funds you are considering. The objective is not to eliminate technology; it is to prevent one technology theme from determining the portfolio’s result.
2. A controlled AI satellite
Use a separate allocation for the AI opportunity only after deciding how much volatility and drawdown you can tolerate. A satellite can contain one diversified thematic fund or several narrowly focused funds, but adding more tickers does not automatically lower risk. Measure the combined exposure of the core and satellite to the same mega-cap companies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Write a maximum allocation and a rebalancing rule before buying. For example, you might direct new contributions to underweight assets and trim the satellite when it exceeds your chosen ceiling. The percentage is a personal risk decision, not a universal recommendation; a shorter time horizon, upcoming withdrawals or a low tolerance for losses argues for a smaller satellite.
3. Non-technology diversifiers
High-quality fixed income, cash reserves and other non-technology assets can provide a different source of return and risk. Compare bond funds by duration, credit quality, inflation sensitivity, currency exposure and whether the bonds are government, investment-grade corporate or lower quality. A short-duration, high-quality fund behaves differently from a long-duration fund, so “bonds” is not a sufficient description.

Vanguard’s 2026 outlook assigns a 25%–30% probability to a lower-growth scenario and says U.S. fixed income should provide diversification if AI disappoints. The same outlook forecasts average U.S. returns of 4%–5% over the next five to 10 years. Those are forecasts, not guarantees, but they illustrate why a portfolio built only for high-growth technology outcomes has an avoidable single-scenario dependency.
Compare AI funds by what they actually own
| Route | What it can add | Checks before purchase | Documented examples and qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad AI and technology | Exposure across software, hardware, services and other companies linked to AI development or adoption. | Top-10 weight, overlap with your core, sector definitions, country weights, turnover, fees and index or active rules. | iShares identifies ARTY as a broader AI and technology route. Its current holdings and fees can change, so use the latest fund page and prospectus. |
| Semiconductors | Companies supplying processors, memory, manufacturing equipment and related components. | Chip-cycle sensitivity, fabrication and geopolitical exposure, customer concentration, valuation and largest-position limits. | iShares identifies SOXX as a semiconductor route. It is a focused industry fund, not a complete AI portfolio. |
| Power and infrastructure | Utilities, grid, electrical equipment and other businesses that may support data-center electricity demand. | Regulated versus merchant revenue, capital spending, interest-rate sensitivity, geography and whether holdings are actually technology companies. | iShares identifies POWR as a U.S. power-infrastructure route. Its U.S. focus can leave country exposure less diversified than a global fund. |
| Active AI technology | A manager’s security selection across AI and related technology rather than a fixed index. | 80% policy, non-diversified status, manager discretion, turnover, active fees, cash policy and position limits. | The SEC-filed BAI prospectus states a normal minimum of 80% in U.S. and non-U.S. AI, technology and technology-related companies and classifies the fund as non-diversified. |
| Global AI and technology | Non-U.S. companies and currencies that may diversify U.S.-only exposure. | Currency hedging, country limits, foreign-market liquidity, withholding taxes, political risk and non-U.S. percentage. | Global X’s AIQ provides a global AI and technology route. Its fact sheet warns about currency and country risks. |
Do not treat the categories as mutually exclusive. A semiconductor fund can own the same large technology issuers found in a broad AI fund, while a power fund may overlap less but still be sensitive to data-center investment. Read the current holdings file rather than relying on a fund’s marketing description.

How to measure overlap before you buy
- Export the full holdings of every fund. Include your broad-market core, technology funds, retirement-plan options and the proposed AI ETF. Record the date because holdings change.
- Normalize company names. Combine different share classes and identify depositary receipts or affiliated listings that represent the same issuer.
- Calculate look-through weights. Multiply each fund’s portfolio weight by your dollar allocation to that fund. Add the results for every issuer appearing in more than one fund.
- Inspect the top ten combined positions. A fund with many holdings can still be concentrated if the largest positions dominate its assets. Compare the combined weight with the weight of your core alone.
- Group exposures by industry and theme. Separate chip designers, equipment makers, cloud and software providers, utilities, data-center infrastructure and other categories. Shared economic drivers matter even when company names differ.
- Review country and currency totals. Add U.S., developed-market and emerging-market exposure across all funds. A global label does not guarantee a meaningful non-U.S. allocation.
- Set a decision rule. If the resulting concentration exceeds the limit you set, reduce the satellite, choose a fund with lower overlap or increase non-technology assets rather than adding another similar ETF.
For an active fund, repeat the calculation whenever the manager publishes a new portfolio. For an index fund, check the rebalance schedule and methodology document; a rules change can alter concentration without a change to the fund’s name.
Choose between an all-in-one fund and value-chain building blocks
One broad thematic ETF
An all-in-one AI fund is simpler to monitor and may spread exposure across several parts of the value chain. Its weakness is that the methodology may still produce large positions in the same companies that dominate a conventional growth portfolio. Review the index’s eligibility definition, reconstitution frequency, weighting formula and concentration cap.
Several narrower ETFs
Combining a semiconductor fund with infrastructure, software or global exposure gives you control over which parts of the value chain you own. It also creates more work: overlap can rise, fees can stack, turnover can increase and one weak segment can offset a stronger one. Use separate funds only when each has a distinct role that you can explain.

An actively managed AI fund
Active management can avoid an index’s mechanical concentration or invest in companies not yet large enough for a major index. It can also increase turnover, tax distributions, manager risk and expenses. BAI’s prospectus is a reminder to read the legal classification and investment policy rather than inferring diversification from the word “active.”
Implementation checklist for a new position
- Define the job of the investment. Decide whether it is intended to add semiconductor exposure, global diversification, power infrastructure, software or a broad AI basket. If you cannot state the job in one sentence, do not buy it yet.
- Read the latest prospectus and fact sheet. Confirm the 80% policy or other concentration requirement, diversification classification, eligible securities, derivatives use, turnover, fees and risks.
- Check liquidity and trading mechanics. Review average trading volume, bid-ask spreads, creation and redemption structure, settlement and whether your broker supports the fund in your jurisdiction.
- Verify domicile and tax treatment. A U.S.-listed ETF may have different withholding, estate-tax, reporting and capital-gains consequences for a non-U.S. investor. Confirm treatment with a qualified tax professional.
- Run the overlap calculation. Include all accounts where you can see holdings. Do not assume a workplace plan or target-date fund has no technology exposure.
- Buy in a way that matches your plan. Use staged purchases if a single entry would create unacceptable timing risk, and avoid borrowing to fund a thematic position.
- Document the exit and rebalance rules. A rule based on allocation, thesis or time is more reliable than selling after a dramatic headline. Rebalance with contributions when possible to limit trading and taxes.
Where individual AI companies fit
Buying individual companies provides the most direct exposure and the greatest company-specific risk. A single issuer can be affected by a product failure, customer concentration, chip or energy shortages, patent disputes, export controls, antitrust action, changing privacy rules or a valuation that assumes years of exceptional growth.
Use individual shares only as a limited satellite after checking:
- cash generation, debt maturities and access to financing;
- revenue concentration and the durability of customer demand;
- research-and-development spending and evidence that products are being adopted;
- competition, switching costs and dependence on suppliers or distribution partners;
- regulatory, export-control, privacy and intellectual-property exposure; and
- the price you are paying relative to realistic earnings and cash-flow scenarios.
Do not use a single-company position to substitute for a diversified AI allocation. If the company fails, no other holding in that position can compensate.
Risk controls that matter more than the AI label
Fees and turnover
Compare expense ratios on the same basis and account for trading spreads. Turnover can create transaction costs and taxable distributions even when the stated fee looks modest. The available data does not establish current fees for ARTY, SOXX, POWR, BAI or AIQ; obtain each fund’s latest prospectus and fee schedule before investing.

Index versus active methodology
Index funds follow published eligibility and weighting rules, but those rules can be narrow or periodically changed. Active funds can adapt, but results depend on manager decisions and may diverge substantially from a benchmark. Read how each fund handles cash, derivatives, rebalancing and temporary departures from its normal policy.
Country and currency exposure
Non-U.S. holdings can reduce dependence on one market, but they introduce currency movements, foreign custody, political risk, different accounting standards and withholding taxes. AIQ’s fact sheet specifically warns about currency and country risks. Decide whether you want those risks unhedged or hedged; neither choice removes risk.
Duration and credit in the bond allocation
Fixed income is not a guaranteed counterweight. Long-duration bonds can fall when yields rise, while lower-quality credit can behave more like equities during a recession. Match duration and credit quality to the stabilizing role you need rather than buying the highest yield available.

Artificial intelligence is also being used as a sales narrative by unregistered platforms and prediction services. In an investor alert dated January 25, 2024, the SEC, NASAA and FINRA stated: “Claims of high guaranteed investment returns with little or no risk are classic warning signs of fraud.”
- Verify that the broker, adviser and security are registered in your jurisdiction.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, secret algorithms, urgent deposits and requests for payment in cryptocurrency or gift cards.
- Ask how an AI-generated prediction is tested, what data it uses, how losses are handled and whether an independent custodian holds assets.
- Confirm fees, withdrawal rules, conflicts of interest and the legal entity named in the account agreement.
- Never send money solely because a chatbot, social-media post or celebrity endorsement claims superior AI performance.
How to monitor the portfolio without chasing headlines
Review allocations on a schedule, such as quarterly or semiannually, rather than after every market move. At each review, update holdings, overlap, sector and country weights, fees, investment-policy changes and your own time horizon. Rebalance when a position breaches your pre-set limit or when the original role of the fund changes.

Also revisit the non-market assumptions: planned withdrawals, emergency savings, debt costs, tax residence and tolerance for a large temporary loss. A portfolio that was acceptable before a house purchase or retirement date may no longer be appropriate, even if the AI thesis is unchanged.
Practical portfolio examples
Investor seeking broad diversification
This investor keeps a total-market and international core, adds one broad AI fund only after checking overlap, and uses high-quality bonds for stability. The AI position has a written ceiling, while new contributions are directed to whichever core or bond segment is below target.
Investor already heavy in U.S. growth funds
Adding another broad AI ETF would likely increase the same exposure. A better first step is to map combined holdings, then consider international equities, power or infrastructure with genuinely different holdings, and fixed income. A semiconductor fund is not automatically a solution if the existing growth funds already own its largest constituents.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Investor wanting value-chain precision
This investor assigns distinct roles to semiconductor, infrastructure and global funds, limits each position, and checks that the combined portfolio is not dominated by one issuer or country. The extra precision is worthwhile only if the investor will maintain the monitoring and rebalance rules.
Bottom line
Invest in AI as a satellite around a diversified core, not as a replacement for diversification. Compare every fund’s real holdings, overlap, industry and country weights, fees, turnover, methodology and legal status. Keep high-quality fixed income and other non-technology assets for scenarios in which AI spending or valuations disappoint, and treat any promise of high guaranteed returns as a potential fraud warning.
