The right fix depends on what broke: if the display still shows an image but touch does not work, try a USB mouse through a compatible OTG adapter. If the display is blank, an external monitor may help only when your specific phone supports video output. In either case, you still need to unlock the phone to access protected data.
First, identify what still works
- You can see the screen, but touch does not respond: Try controlling the phone with a USB mouse connected through a compatible OTG adapter or dock.
- The screen is blank, but the phone powers on: Check whether the exact model supports video output to an external display. If it does, a hub, monitor, mouse and keyboard may let you see and control it.
- You cannot control the phone or get a picture on an external display: Contact the manufacturer or arrange repair. Connection accessories cannot compensate for a phone that does not support the required input or video features.
If the image is visible but touch is broken
Connect a wired USB mouse to the phone using a phone-compatible USB OTG adapter or dock. If the phone supports the connection, a pointer may appear so you can navigate the screen. Samsung documents this approach for Galaxy phones in its guidance for a touchscreen that does not work while the display remains visible: Samsung support: touchscreen doesn’t work but the screen is still visible.
Check your phone model’s OTG and USB support before buying an adapter; compatibility is not guaranteed just because the phone has a USB port. A keyboard may also help you enter a PIN or password, but it does not bypass the lock screen.
If the display is blank: check for external video output
A USB-C port alone does not confirm that a phone can send video to a monitor. Google says connected-display features are not available on all devices and may vary by phone; available display modes and settings can differ too. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI hub.

Samsung likewise cautions that not all Samsung phones support HDMI output. Its instructions for using an external display apply only to supported Galaxy phones, not Android phones generally: Samsung support: nothing is visible on the screen. For a compatible phone, the setup typically needs a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A, an HDMI display and cable, and wired USB mouse and keyboard.
Samsung Galaxy procedure for supported models
Samsung Canada’s procedure is for Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later that support DisplayPort. Samsung notes that details may differ by location; do not assume these steps work on other models or brands. The listed equipment is a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A, an HDMI display and cable, plus wired USB mouse and keyboard.

- Connect the monitor, mouse and keyboard to the hub.
- Hold both volume buttons while connecting the phone to the hub.
- Release the buttons after the phone connects. The external display may show screen mirroring or Samsung DeX.
- Unlock the phone with the mouse or keyboard. If DeX opens and you need the mirrored phone screen, exit DeX.
- Once you can access the phone, use Samsung Smart Switch to transfer data to a new phone, following Samsung’s instructions: Samsung Canada: transfer data from a Galaxy with a broken screen.

Protect your data once you regain access
Back up or transfer important data as soon as you can use the phone. Do not use a factory reset as an access fix when your priority is recovery: Google warns that resetting erases phone data and recommends backing up first. If troubleshooting does not restore access, contact the device maker: Google Android Help: fix an Android device that freezes or won’t respond.
