Start with Selenium’s normal screenshot method, then check whether the saved image actually includes content below the fold. Full-page behavior depends on the Selenium binding and browser/driver combination; when the standard call is insufficient, use a documented Chrome DevTools or binding-specific option that your stack supports.

Choose a capture method that matches the result you need

Method Best suited for Trade-off
Standard WebDriver screenshot A simple first attempt using the screenshot API familiar across Selenium examples. Whether it captures the entire document depends on implementation support. Selenium’s JavaScript API describes full-page capture as a best effort.
Chrome DevTools page capture Chrome-specific control, including capture beyond the viewport when exposed by the relevant Selenium binding. DevTools APIs are versioned and binding-specific; this is not a portable WebDriver guarantee.
Binding-specific full-page option A documented convenience option in a binding that supports it, such as Ruby’s full_page: true. Availability varies by driver. Ruby documents an unsupported-operation error when the driver cannot provide the facility.
Enlarge or maximize the browser window Capturing a larger viewport or making a viewport-based comparison. Changing window dimensions is not documented as a guarantee that the whole document will be captured.

For the ordinary screenshot API, Selenium’s JavaScript reference says it “Takes a screenshot of the current page” and describes PNG data as base64-encoded. Its API documentation puts entire-page capture first in the preference order, but calls that behavior a best effort. Do not assume that a successful call means below-the-fold content is present: inspect the actual image for your browser, driver, and binding combination. Selenium JavaScript WebDriver API

Set up a reproducible capture

  1. Record the stack: identify the Selenium language binding and version, Chrome version, and driver version. This matters especially if you later use a versioned DevTools API.
  2. Load the page and wait for the state your application needs: use an application-specific readiness signal, such as a particular element being present. There is no universal wait condition established for all sites; do not substitute an arbitrary fixed sleep for a known page state.
  3. Try the standard WebDriver screenshot call: save the image and inspect its dimensions and visible content, including the end of the page.
  4. If it does not meet the need, use a documented full-page route for that binding: choose a Chrome DevTools capture or a binding-specific option only when it is supported by your Selenium/browser stack.
  5. Keep the output and version details together: record the capture format and relevant versions so that later runs can be compared meaningfully.

These steps distinguish a screenshot of the current viewport from a clip or a capture extending beyond the viewport. Enlarging the window changes the viewport; it should not be treated as proof of full-document capture. Selenium’s documentation describes window sizing and tabs separately from a universal full-page screenshot guarantee. Selenium: Working with windows and tabs

Use Chrome DevTools for explicit beyond-viewport control in .NET

The Selenium .NET V148 DevTools API reference documents CaptureScreenshotCommandSettings, including CaptureBeyondViewport, whose documented default is false. The settings also expose a clip, image format, source surface, JPEG quality, and an encoding choice that trades speed against size. These are versioned, Chrome-oriented DevTools controls—not a cross-browser WebDriver contract. Check that the DevTools protocol supported by the Chrome version matches the generated Selenium binding you use. Selenium .NET V148 CaptureScreenshotCommandSettings

When using a clip, the referenced DevTools API describes rectangle coordinates as x, y, width, and height, with scale in device-independent pixels. A clip captures the specified region; it is not interchangeable with asking for beyond-viewport page content. The related V147 Viewport API reference is available here: Selenium .NET V147 Viewport.

Use a binding-specific full-page option only when supported

Selenium Ruby documents screenshot_as and save_screenshot with full_page: true where the driver supports the full-page facility. If the driver cannot provide it, the documented behavior is an UnsupportedOperationError. Check the API reference for the driver and binding version in use rather than assuming the option works everywhere. Selenium Ruby TakesScreenshot API

Validate pages with dynamic content

A screenshot may not represent the state you intended if the page has not reached the application state you need. For pages that load content after navigation, identify a meaningful readiness signal in the application and wait for it before capturing. Then inspect the output on the specific pages that matter, especially where content appears below the fold or loads lazily. The cited Selenium references do not establish how every dynamic or lazy-loading pattern affects full-page capture, so verify rather than assume.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely explanation What to do
The screenshot stops at the viewport. The standard screenshot implementation did not provide full-document capture for this stack. Inspect the output, then use a supported DevTools or binding-specific full-page route.
Ruby raises UnsupportedOperationError. The active driver cannot provide the documented full-page facility. Check the driver’s support and choose another route documented for that stack.
A DevTools option is unavailable or incompatible. The Selenium binding’s generated protocol API and Chrome’s supported protocol may not match. Check the browser and binding versions, and use a matching documented DevTools API.
The bottom portion is blank or missing expected content. The page may not yet be in the application state required for capture, or the chosen method may not capture beyond the viewport. Wait on an application-specific readiness condition, then verify the output and capture method.
Maximizing the window still does not capture the document. Maximizing changes the viewport size; it is not a documented whole-document capture guarantee. Use a full-page-capable route supported by the binding and inspect the result.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

The cited API references do not establish universal page-size limits, capture-speed comparisons, success rates, or reliability percentages. DevTools exposes encoding settings that trade speed against size, but the outcome depends on the selected settings and page. For repeatable work, preserve the browser, driver, binding, and protocol versions alongside the images, and validate the capture result rather than treating a successful API response as proof of full-page coverage.
