Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep OBS and the YouTube broadcast running, and update the playlist at a lesson boundary rather than stopping the live event. Stage revised lessons under new filenames, add them to the playlist, and verify the transition in OBS’s preview and audio meters. Replacing a file while OBS is reading it is not established as a safe, interruption-free method, so test any such change on your actual setup before relying on it.
Why you can update lessons without ending the broadcast
The encoder supplies the ongoing video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes starting a stream by sending content from an encoder and ending it by stopping that content. For an ordinary lesson update, leave the encoder sending content and change the media being played on the encoder side instead.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation also describes managing separate broadcast resources while a 24/7 broadcast remains live: a separate interview broadcast can be activated and later completed without stopping the stream feeding the ongoing broadcast. That is about broadcast-resource management, not hot-swapping a file in OBS; it does not establish that a particular OBS playlist edit will be glitch-free.
Safest practical workflow for changing lesson files
- Keep the current playlist and lesson intact. Save a copy of the playlist and do not delete or overwrite the file that is currently playing.
- Stage the revised lesson as a new file. Give it a new filename in the media folder used by your OBS setup. Open it and play it through to check that the file itself works before putting it on air.
- Add or swap the lesson at a natural boundary. Use the media-source or VLC playlist controls available in your OBS setup to make the change when one lesson ends. OBS documents media-source and playlist controls, but its documentation does not establish one universally safe live-reload command for every configuration.
- Verify the transition before cleaning up. Watch the OBS preview and audio meters as the next lesson begins. Confirm the correct picture and sound before removing the old file or playlist entry.
- Keep the local stream dependencies available. A locally operated continuous playlist depends on the computer, lesson files, encoder, and internet connection remaining available.
- Test before unattended use. On a private or otherwise controlled stream, check the update at a playlist boundary, a source reload, and an OBS restart. Treat this as a setup-specific operational check, not as a guarantee that those actions are interruption-free.
Do not assume an in-place file replacement is safe
If OBS or VLC is actively reading a lesson file, overwriting that file in place may not make the running source reload it cleanly. The OBS documentation reviewed describes media-source and playlist behavior, but does not promise glitch-free replacement of a file currently in use. Use a staged new filename and verify playback on your encoder rather than relying on an untested overwrite.

Keep YouTube HLS rules separate from lesson playlist edits
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance specifies requirements for HLS segments and rolling playlists, including no more than five outstanding segments, TS segments between one and four seconds, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are ingestion requirements for HLS; they are not instructions for editing an OBS lesson playlist or replacing a lesson file.
Local OBS or a cloud service?
With local OBS, you retain control of the media sources and playlist, but the computer, files, and internet connection must stay available. A hosted service may shift some of that operational burden, but check the provider’s current playlist-editing behavior, interruption handling, YouTube integration, fees, and storage terms before depending on it. Do not assume that a cloud service supports live lesson edits unless the provider confirms that workflow.
