Start with WARDOGS’ default QWERTY layout for one or two matches, then change only keys that slow you down. The essential beginner bindings are WASD for movement, Left Shift for sprint and aim focus/hold-breath, Q/E for leaning, R to reload, F to interact, Middle Mouse to ping, and J/K for squad and proximity voice. WARDOGS is still in Early Access, so verify every assignment in Settings > Controls > Keybindings after an update.

WARDOGS default PC controls at a glance

The following layout is the current reference for a QWERTY keyboard. It is a starting point rather than a permanent contract: WARDOGS’ Early Access updates can change labels, conflicts, or vehicle behavior. If an on-screen prompt or the live Keybindings menu disagrees with an older list, use the in-game assignment.

Category Action Default key What it does
Movement Move forward W Moves your soldier forward.
Movement Move backward S Moves your soldier backward.
Movement Strafe left/right A / D Moves laterally without turning your view.
Mobility Sprint Left Shift Runs while held, subject to stamina or game-state limits.
Mobility Tactical sprint Double-press Left Shift Triggers the faster sprint mode when the game permits it.
Mobility Jump Space Jumps and is also used by parachute deploy/cut behavior.
Mobility Crouch C Lowers your stance for cover and a smaller profile.
Mobility Prone Ctrl Moves into the lowest stance.
Mobility Slow walk Alt Reduces movement speed for quieter or more controlled movement.
Stance and aim Lean left/right Q / E Peeks around cover without exposing as much of your body.
Stance and aim Secondary use/aim Right Mouse Button Aims or performs the weapon’s secondary use.
Stance and aim Focus/hold breath Left Shift while aiming Steadies aim; the same key is also sprint in infantry movement.
Weapons Primary use/fire Left Mouse Button Fires or performs the primary weapon action.
Weapons Reload R Reloads the equipped weapon.
Weapons Melee bash V Performs a close-range melee attack.
Weapons Cycle fire mode B Switches among the weapon’s available firing modes.
Weapons Cycle sights Z Changes the equipped sight or optic view.
Weapons Mount/toggle bipod G Deploys or toggles the bipod when the weapon and surface support it.
Weapons Change zeroing Page Up / Page Down Adjusts the sight’s zeroing distance.
Weapons Inspect I Inspects the held weapon.
Interaction and gear Interact F Uses objects, enters usable positions, or performs the contextual action shown on screen.
Interaction and gear Holster X Holsters the current weapon.
Interaction and gear Select quick slot Number keys Selects the corresponding quick-slot item.
Interaction and gear Equipment wheel 4 Opens the equipment wheel.
Interaction and gear Change slots Mouse wheel Cycles available quick slots or equipment.
Communication Ping / ping wheel Middle Mouse Button Press to ping; hold to open the ping wheel.
Communication Squad push-to-talk J Transmits to squad voice while held.
Communication Proximity push-to-talk K Transmits to nearby players while held.
Communication Text chat Enter Opens text chat.
Information Map M Opens the map.
Information Inventory Tab Opens inventory.
Parachute Deploy/cut Space Deploys or cuts the parachute according to the current prompt and state.

Several entries are context-sensitive. Left Shift is sprint when moving but focus or hold-breath while aiming. Space is jump on foot and can control parachute behavior during a drop. The prompt on screen takes precedence when you are unsure which context is active.

The five bindings beginners should learn first

1. WASD, crouch, prone and jump

Keep your left hand over WASD and learn to move while changing stance. C is the practical first cover button; Ctrl is for going fully prone when concealment or a firing angle matters. Space handles jumping, but remember that it also appears in parachute controls. Practice short strafes with A and D instead of standing still while firing.

2. Left Shift for sprint and focus

Left Shift is intentionally overloaded. Tapping it twice activates tactical sprint, while holding it during aiming steadies your sight. A PC Gamer guide describes holding Shift to steady aim; in practice, the effect is most useful for controlled bursts at distance because it can reduce sway and slightly zoom the view. Do not split this key immediately: sprint and aim focus are both frequent infantry actions, and keeping them together leaves nearby keys free for less common functions.

3. Q and E for leaning

Leaning lets you look around a wall, window, or vehicle while exposing less of your body. Bind and practice Q for left lean and E for right lean before changing rarely used actions such as inspect or zeroing. If your keyboard or hand position makes one side awkward, change both lean keys as a pair so your muscle memory remains symmetrical.

4. Middle Mouse for the ping wheel

WARDOGS’ matches revolve around three teams fighting over randomized 2×2 km Control Zones inside larger maps. A quick Middle Mouse ping communicates a threat, route, or objective without opening chat. Hold the button for the wheel when a simple marker is not precise enough. Keep it reachable without releasing W, A, S, or D; a ping that arrives a second late is often no ping at all.

5. J and K for voice

Use J for squad push-to-talk and K for proximity push-to-talk. The game’s local voice design supports tactical coordination with teammates and communication with nearby players, including opponents. Test both channels in a safe moment so you know which indicator appears and which audience hears you. If a mouse side button is easier to reach, you can move one voice action there, but keep squad and proximity on distinct buttons.

A sensible beginner keybind plan

Play the defaults before changing them

Use the default layout for one or two matches. This gives you a baseline for movement, reload, interaction, lean, ping, and voice instead of encouraging constant experimentation. During those matches, note actions that cause a real reach problem: missing F while entering cover, releasing movement to ping, or fumbling Q/E when peeking.

Change high-frequency actions first

After the trial, change only uncomfortable actions. A useful priority order is:

  1. Movement and stance: keep WASD, jump, crouch, prone, and sprint where your hand can reach them without leaving movement.
  2. Combat safety: keep reload, aim, fire, and interact immediately available.
  3. Teamplay: ensure ping and at least one voice channel can be triggered while moving.
  4. Peeking: set Q/E lean to keys you can press without losing your strafe.
  5. Rare actions: only then consider inspect, zeroing, fire-mode cycling, or bipod changes.

Evaluate every change against three tests

  • Reachability while moving: can you press the key while holding a direction and aiming?
  • Conflict risk: does the same key behave differently in infantry, vehicle, helicopter, or building contexts?
  • Communication speed: can you ping or talk before the situation changes?

Do not copy a helicopter specialist’s layout into infantry controls without testing both contexts. WARDOGS separates infantry, vehicle, helicopter, building, and communication categories, but some bindings are globally exclusive, so a change in one area can affect another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to rebind keys in WARDOGS

  1. From the main menu, open Settings.
  2. Select Controls, then open Keybindings.
  3. Choose the category containing the action: infantry, vehicle, helicopter, building, or communication.
  4. Select the action you want to change.
  5. Press the replacement key or mouse button when prompted.
  6. Apply or save the change if the current menu presents a confirmation button.
  7. Enter a low-risk situation and test the action in its intended context. Check movement, aiming, interaction, ping, and both voice channels before starting a serious match.

Because the game is in Early Access, the menu is the authoritative reference after a patch. Web tables can lag behind a renamed action, a new conflict rule, or a changed vehicle function.

Resolving common keybind problems

A new binding removed an old action

Some custom bindings are globally exclusive. If assigning a key appears to erase another action, return to the relevant category and look for the key on both actions. Give the two functions separate keys, or restore the original assignment. Test on foot and in a vehicle; a conflict may only appear when the game changes context.

Spacebar performs an unexpected helicopter action

The Steam FAQ reports a current helicopter issue in which Spacebar can retain a hidden weapon function. Avoid assigning Spacebar to armed-helicopter flight controls until a patch resolves that behavior. Keep the default jump/parachute use on foot unless you have a specific reason to move it, and check the helicopter prompt before taking off.

Mouse flight feels uncontrollable

Helicopters have separate settings for cyclic movement, yaw, collective, freelook, and rotary-vehicle mouse control. Rotary mouse control changes how mouse movement contributes to flight; it is not simply another infantry sensitivity slider. Turn it on only if the behavior feels natural, then test small inputs in an empty practice situation. If the helicopter turns when you intended to look around, verify whether freelook is active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freelook seems to disable steering

Freelook can decouple your view from the helicopter’s flight direction. Confirm its state before diagnosing a failed cyclic or yaw binding. Exit freelook, make a small input, and check whether the aircraft responds. If it does, the control was working and the view mode was the cause.

HOTAS and mouse-and-keyboard inputs interfere

HOTAS settings can interfere with mouse-and-keyboard helicopter input. For troubleshooting, disconnect or disable the extra controller profile, confirm the keyboard and mouse bindings in the helicopter category, and test again. Reintroduce HOTAS axes one at a time rather than changing several flight controls simultaneously.

A patch reset or changed your layout

Before manually editing configuration files, back up GameUserSettings.ini. Keep a copy of your working file with a date in its name. If an update creates a broken layout, restore the backup only after closing the game, then verify every action in Settings > Controls because a renamed or removed setting may not map cleanly.

Helicopter controls: learn them separately

Helicopter flight uses a different control model from infantry movement. Treat the first flight as a dedicated practice session rather than trying to learn it during a contested objective.

Helicopter function Reference input What to check
Cyclic movement W / A / S / D These inputs tilt or move the helicopter’s flight path rather than walking a soldier.
Yaw Q / E Turns the helicopter left or right around its vertical axis.
Collective Left Shift / Ctrl Changes lift and altitude; confirm which direction each input produces in your current settings.
Freelook Check the helicopter category Separates looking around from steering; verify whether it is held or toggled.
Rotary vehicle mouse control Dedicated vehicle setting Determines whether mouse movement contributes to rotary-wing control. Enable only after testing keyboard-only flight.

A safe first-flight routine

  1. Open the helicopter section in Settings > Controls > Keybindings and read the current labels rather than relying on an old table.
  2. Check cyclic, yaw, collective, freelook, and rotary-mouse settings individually.
  3. With the helicopter stationary or in a safe area, apply a brief W, A, S, and D input and observe the tilt.
  4. Test Q and E for yaw, then Left Shift and Ctrl for collective. Release each key before trying the opposite direction.
  5. Toggle or hold freelook and move the mouse. Confirm whether you are looking around or changing the aircraft’s attitude.
  6. Only after keyboard control is predictable should you enable rotary vehicle mouse control or add HOTAS input.
  7. Recheck Spacebar before flying an armed helicopter because of the reported hidden weapon-function issue.

Controller users may also encounter Steam Input or community layouts. Treat those as an additional mapping layer: verify which physical button reaches each in-game action, and test the result in both infantry and helicopter contexts.

Why online WARDOGS control lists disagree

WARDOGS is in Early Access, and the available references do not agree on every row. Differences can involve a renamed action, a context-specific prompt, or an older build. There is no authoritative static keybind sheet from BULKHEAD that covers every current action; the live in-game Controls display is therefore the dependable source. This is especially important for Spacebar parachute behavior, helicopter mouse settings, and bindings that are globally exclusive.

When a guide and your game disagree, record the exact label shown in your menu, check the category in which it appears, and test the key in the context where you need it. Do not assume that a familiar infantry key has the same effect inside a vehicle.

Choosing hardware for these bindings

The documented defaults and rebinding workflow are designed around a PC keyboard and mouse. A keyboard for FPS keybinds should give your left hand a comfortable, simultaneous reach to WASD, Left Shift, Ctrl, Q, E, F, and the number row. A tenkeyless gaming keyboard can make mouse placement easier by removing the number pad, but it is not required; choose the layout that leaves enough desk space for consistent mouse movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Prioritize dependable key rollover and a stable connection so simultaneous movement, sprint, and voice inputs register.
  • Choose a keycap and switch feel that lets you distinguish Q/E, F, and Left Shift without looking down.
  • A mouse with one or two side buttons can make ping or push-to-talk reachable, but assign buttons only after checking global conflicts.
  • A controller or HOTAS is optional. It adds another mapping layer and requires context-by-context testing rather than automatically improving helicopter control.

A practical test checklist

Run this checklist after your first rebinding pass and after major updates:

  • Move in all four directions while sprinting and tactical-sprinting.
  • Jump, crouch, prone, and slow-walk without losing directional control.
  • Aim, hold Left Shift to focus, lean both directions, fire, reload, and change fire mode.
  • Interact with an object, open the equipment wheel, select a quick slot, and holster.
  • Send a single ping and open the ping wheel while moving.
  • Transmit on squad voice and proximity voice separately, then close chat and reopen the map and inventory.
  • Check parachute deploy/cut prompts before jumping from an aircraft.
  • If you fly, test cyclic, yaw, collective, freelook, rotary mouse control, and any HOTAS profile independently.

If one item fails, change only that binding, retest the affected context, and keep the rest of your layout unchanged. Small, documented adjustments build reliable muscle memory faster than wholesale rebinding.

The best starting layout for most new players

For a first session, retain the defaults and make no changes unless a key is physically uncomfortable. If you do customize, preserve Left Shift for both sprint and focus, keep Q/E as a matched lean pair, leave R and F close to movement, and ensure Middle Mouse, J, and K are reachable without releasing your movement keys. Learn helicopter controls in their own session and treat the in-game Settings > Controls screen as the final authority after every patch.
