Start with teleport or blink locomotion, snap turning, and a movement vignette. Keep your view stable: disable camera shake, roll, forced rides, acceleration, and deceleration. Choose the highest refresh rate your headset and application can hold without dropped frames; a steady 72 Hz is generally more comfortable than an unstable 90 or 120 Hz. Move only when you choose to, and stop at the first sign of nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, or disorientation.
These settings are a conservative starting profile, not a guarantee. Teleport and snap turn can still disorient some people, and every application exposes comfort controls differently. Change one setting at a time, use short sessions while adapting, and return to a simpler profile whenever symptoms appear.
Use this comfort profile first
Before experimenting with smooth movement, configure a low-risk baseline. The table shows what to select in a game’s comfort or locomotion menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Setting | Starting choice | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Locomotion | Teleport, blink, or dash | Removes most continuous visual movement while you reposition. |
| Turning | Snap turn | Uses discrete view changes instead of rotating the scene continuously. |
| Peripheral-flow aid | Vignette or tunnel vision during movement | Darkens the edges of the display and reduces distracting peripheral flow. |
| Transitions | Blink or dash, when offered | Replaces a prolonged moving view with a short transition. |
| Camera effects | Camera shake, roll, scripted rides, and forced movement off | Keeps the horizon and world visually stable. |
| Performance | A refresh rate the application sustains consistently | Prevents frame drops and judder caused by missed frame budgets. |
| Session length | Short sessions with breaks | Lets you stop before mild discomfort becomes severe. |
Save this profile as your reference point. If a game has separate settings for comfort, locomotion, accessibility, and camera, inspect all of those menus; a single “comfort mode” switch may not change every source of motion.

Why visual movement can feel disorienting
VR can show your eyes a moving scene while your body remains seated or standing. The mismatch can produce visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), including nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, sweating, or a feeling that your orientation is unstable. A moving horizon, sudden camera rotation, or a delayed frame can intensify the problem even when you are not physically moving.
Disorientation is not identical to nausea. A teleport may feel abrupt, and snap turning can make the world seem to jump. Meta’s developer guidance describes teleport and snap turn as comfort options that minimize motion sickness but notes that either can still cause disorientation. Treat your own response as the deciding test: a setting that is comfortable for one person can be unpleasant for another.
Configure locomotion step by step
- Open the application’s settings before entering active play. Look for headings such as Comfort, Locomotion, Movement, Accessibility, or Player.
- Select Teleport, Blink, or Dash. These names describe a user-selected destination followed by an instantaneous or brief transition. Choose the option that does not show a continuous glide.
- Turn off smooth or continuous movement. Leave it disabled for your first sessions, even if the game enables it by default.
- Enable a movement vignette. If the menu offers a size, strength, or field-of-view slider, begin with the strongest reduction that still lets you see the scene clearly.
- Choose snap turning. Start with a larger discrete angle if the game offers angle choices; smaller increments can require more frequent turns.
- Disable camera effects. Turn off camera shake and roll, and decline scripted rides or forced camera movement where the application allows it.
- Test in a quiet area. Teleport a few times, rotate, and stand still before starting a fast section. Stop immediately if symptoms begin.
Because each application implements its own locomotion menu, a change in one game does not automatically carry into another. Recheck the profile whenever you install a new title or switch between a standalone headset and PC streaming.
Teleport, blink, dash, and smooth locomotion
Teleport is the safest starting point
Teleport lets you point at a location and appear there without watching the world slide past you. Meta’s guidance calls teleport the comfort option because it minimizes motion sickness. It can nevertheless feel disorienting when the destination is far away, when the arrival view is unexpected, or when the transition is animated.
- Aim at a clear floor position rather than an edge or moving platform.
- After arriving, pause long enough to establish your orientation before teleporting again.
- Keep the horizon level and avoid chaining rapid teleports through a complex scene.
Blink and dash are alternatives
Some applications provide a blink or dash transition. Blink briefly obscures the view; dash moves you over a very short interval. Both reduce the amount of continuous peripheral motion compared with sliding. They are not interchangeable: if dash itself feels like a fast camera ride, use blink or standard teleport instead.

Smooth locomotion should be an earned setting
Smooth, slide, or continuous locomotion displays ongoing forward motion. It provides natural control for users who tolerate it, but it is a common trigger for sickness. Enable it only after you can complete short teleport sessions comfortably.
When you test smooth movement, use a steady moderate speed. Avoid acceleration and deceleration curves, which make the visual flow change unexpectedly. Keep the vignette enabled, test for a few minutes, then stop and assess how you feel before increasing speed or reducing the vignette.
Choose a turning method
Snap turn
Snap turn rotates the view by a fixed increment when you press a control. It is the comfort-oriented choice because the scene does not continuously sweep across your peripheral vision. If angle controls are available, begin with a larger increment and reduce it only if the jumps themselves disorient you.
Smooth turn
Smooth turn gives finer control, useful for aiming or aligning with objects, but the continuous rotation can cause motion sickness. Keep it disabled while you establish tolerance to other movement. If you later try it, combine it with a strong vignette, slow rotation, and no other moving-camera effects.
When snap turning still feels wrong
Some people react to the instantaneous change rather than to continuous rotation. Try a different snap angle, use a blink transition if the game supports one, or turn your physical body while standing safely. Do not force yourself to continue through disorientation; switching back to a neutral view and taking a break is more useful than building a longer exposure.

Reduce peripheral visual flow
Vignette and tunnel vision
A vignette darkens the display edges so that attention is drawn toward the center. During movement, this limits the amount of peripheral scene flow your eyes receive. Some games call the same control tunnel vision or field-of-view reduction.
Use the aid only while moving if the application allows that choice. A strong setting may hide nearby objects or make navigation harder, but comfort is the priority during adaptation. Reduce the strength in small steps after several symptom-free sessions, and restore it immediately if discomfort returns.
Transition styles
Blink and dash transitions are additional comfort controls. Blink removes most of the visible movement during a relocation. Dash leaves a short burst of motion, so it may suit users who find blink too abrupt but can still be uncomfortable for people sensitive to rapid visual changes. Test each option while stationary in a simple environment.
Keep the camera and horizon stable
Disable every effect that moves the viewpoint without a direct decision from you:
- Camera shake from impacts, explosions, footsteps, or weapons.
- Camera roll that tilts the horizon during turns, sprinting, damage, or special abilities.
- Forced movement during cutscenes, elevators, vehicles, roller-coaster sequences, or scripted rides.
- Automatic acceleration and deceleration that changes speed independently of your input.
If an application cannot disable a sequence, look away from the moving scene, close your eyes briefly, or remove the headset before symptoms build. A level may be comfortable during ordinary walking but not during a scripted ride; evaluate those segments separately.

Set refresh rate for consistency, not the biggest number
Refresh rate is how often the headset updates the display. Frame rate is how often the application produces new frames. They interact: when the application misses its frame budget, the headset can show repeated or late frames, producing judder that aggravates discomfort.
Supported Meta Quest rates
| Headset | Refresh-rate options in Meta’s performance reference |
|---|---|
| Meta Quest 2 | 72 Hz, 80 Hz, 90 Hz, and 120 Hz |
| Meta Quest 3 | 72 Hz, 80 Hz, 90 Hz, and 120 Hz |
| Meta Quest 3S | 72 Hz, 80 Hz, and 90 Hz |
Those are supported options, not a promise that every application can render them. Meta’s performance guidance gives a frame budget of about 13.9 milliseconds at 72 Hz and 11.1 milliseconds at 90 Hz. If the application cannot finish a frame within the selected budget, dropped frames and judder are more important comfort risks than the nominal refresh-rate label.
Use the rate your application can hold
- Start with the application’s recommended or default rate.
- Play a demanding scene: combat, dense crowds, particle effects, or a large view.
- Watch for hitching, repeated images, or uneven motion. Those are signs the application is missing its budget.
- If the highest mode is unstable, step down to a lower supported rate and retest.
Meta’s VRC.Quest.Performance.1 requirement says interactive applications must maintain at least 60 frames per second. Higher rates are available only when the device and application support them and can sustain them. A stable 72 Hz can therefore feel better than an unstable 90 or 120 Hz.
PC streaming considerations
When a headset receives VR content from a computer, the game, rendering settings, wireless or wired link, and headset runtime all affect frame delivery. Lower demanding graphics options before raising refresh rate. If stutter appears only while streaming, return to the last combination that was smooth rather than compensating with more aggressive comfort effects.

Session pacing and adaptation
Comfort improves more reliably when exposure ends before symptoms become strong. Begin with a short, stationary or teleport-only session. Remove the headset at the first sign of nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, sweating, or disorientation. Take a real break rather than switching immediately to another moving application.

- First sessions: use teleport, snap turn, vignette, and a stable refresh rate in a simple environment.
- After symptom-free sessions: lengthen the session modestly, changing no other variable.
- When you want more control: test either smooth turning or smooth movement, never both at once.
- If symptoms return: revert the last change and use a shorter session next time.
Do not treat discomfort as a threshold to push through. Meta’s safety guidance identifies motion sickness, including visually induced motion sickness, as a possible effect of using Meta Quest. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant stopping VR and seeking appropriate medical advice.
Troubleshoot by symptom and trigger
| What you notice | Likely trigger to test | Change to make |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea during ordinary movement | Continuous locomotion or acceleration | Return to teleport; disable acceleration and deceleration; use a stronger vignette. |
| Disorientation immediately after a jump | Teleport distance or arrival orientation | Use shorter jumps, pause after arrival, and choose a blink transition if available. |
| Discomfort while rotating | Smooth turn or an unsuitable snap angle | Use snap turn, then try a larger discrete increment; if jumps remain unpleasant, use physical turning. |
| Symptoms during rides or cutscenes | Forced camera movement, roll, or shake | Disable those effects or skip the sequence; remove the headset if controls are unavailable. |
| Judder or a vibrating image | Missed frame budget | Lower graphics load or refresh rate until motion is consistently smooth. |
| Symptoms only in one application | Application-specific implementation | Inspect that title’s own comfort menu; system settings may not carry across games. |
Change one variable at a time. If you alter movement, turning, vignette strength, and refresh rate together, you will not know which change helped or hurt.
Progress from comfort mode without losing control
Once teleport and snap turning are consistently comfortable, decide which capability matters most. Players who need precise positioning may first reduce vignette strength. Players who need continuous travel may first test smooth movement at a moderate, fixed speed while keeping snap turn. Players who need precise facing may test smooth turn while retaining teleport. This sequence isolates the visual stimulus instead of stacking several at once.

Keep a personal rollback rule: the moment symptoms appear, restore the previous comfortable setting and end the session. A setting is not an improvement if it allows more movement but leaves you unable to continue playing.
Application and headset limitations
Comfort controls are implemented by each application. Menu names, available transition styles, snap angles, vignette strength, and camera toggles can differ by title, edition, headset model, game engine, and PC-streaming path. A headset-level refresh-rate choice cannot add a locomotion option that the application does not provide.
For developers and technically minded users, the practical requirement is consistent frame delivery at the selected rate. Meta’s performance references list the Quest 2 and Quest 3 at 72, 80, 90, and 120 Hz, and Quest 3S at 72, 80, and 90 Hz; an application still has to maintain its own frame budget. For players, the visible test is simple: if motion is uneven, reduce load or refresh rate before changing comfort controls.
Quick Recap
A quick decision path
- New to VR or already symptomatic: teleport, snap turn, strong vignette, stable 72 Hz or the application’s reliable default.
- Teleport is comfortable but travel is slow: try blink or dash, then test smooth movement at a steady moderate speed with the vignette retained.
- Turning is the problem: keep teleport, use snap turn, and adjust the snap angle before trying smooth rotation.
- Everything feels fine except busy scenes: lower graphics load or refresh rate until frame delivery is even.
- Any symptom returns: stop, take a break, and return to the last profile that was comfortable.
