Our verdict at a glance
1. NordVPN: best all-round Mac VPN
NordVPN is the clearest default recommendation if you want a capable Mac application, quick connection workflow and more features than a basic VPN tunnel. Tom’s Guide’s June 24, 2026 Mac VPN guide named NordVPN its overall pick after Mac-specific testing. That testing included installation, usability, speed and streaming checks according to the supplied reference, but it should be understood as that publication’s methodology—not a universal proof that NordVPN is the fastest VPN in every location.
The native macOS app supports NordLynx, NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol, along with automatic kill-switch behavior and specialty modes including Double VPN, Onion over VPN and Meshnet. Threat Protection Pro is a plan-dependent feature, so it should not be treated as part of every subscription or app installation.
One of the most important Mac-specific details is the installation channel. The version downloaded from NordVPN’s website provides more granular controls, including custom DNS and an app-level kill switch. The Mac App Store edition is simpler and emphasizes whole-connection protection, but it does not expose exactly the same controls. If you specifically need per-app behavior or custom DNS, check which edition you are installing before subscribing.
Choose NordVPN if: you want the most balanced combination of usability, protocols, specialty features and independent-review support.
Look elsewhere if: your priority is the strongest privacy-transparency story, or if your older Mac cannot run the current application.
2. Proton VPN: best for privacy-focused Mac users
Proton VPN is the strongest privacy-oriented candidate in this shortlist. Its Mac application supports macOS 10.12 and later according to Proton’s support documentation, making it the most accommodating choice here for users with an older Mac. The app includes WireGuard, WireGuard TCP, Stealth, Smart Protocol, connection profiles, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, custom DNS and Moderate NAT.
Proton also offers privacy-oriented features such as Secure Core, but more features do not automatically make a VPN anonymous. The provider still operates the VPN servers and can observe whatever operational information its policies permit. A VPN changes the trust relationship; it does not eliminate trust.
WireGuard is the sensible starting point for most users because it is a modern, lightweight protocol. Proton also describes WireGuard as open source and fast. Real-world performance still varies with server load, distance, ISP conditions, protocol implementation and the destination service. WireGuard TCP or Stealth may be preferable on networks that interfere with ordinary VPN traffic, even if they are not the fastest option on an unrestricted connection.
Recommended Free Tools
The largest caveat is Proton’s Mac split tunneling. Proton documents the feature as experimental. It excludes applications rather than individual websites, has limitations with WebKit-based applications, and currently works with WireGuard and Stealth rather than IKEv2. That matters particularly to Safari users and anyone expecting the same behavior as Proton’s Windows implementation. Test the specific apps you need instead of assuming that a split-tunnel rule will cover every browser window or embedded web view.
Choose Proton VPN if: privacy architecture, protocol choice and advanced controls matter more to you than a completely frictionless feature set.
Look elsewhere if: you need mature, website-level split tunneling on macOS or want the simplest possible setup.
3. Surfshark: best budget and many-device candidate
Surfshark is a credible choice for price-sensitive households and people who want one VPN service across several devices. Its macOS application requires macOS 12 or later and includes Quick Connect, auto-connect, Bypasser, CleanWeb, MultiHop, static IP and dedicated IP options.

Bypasser is Surfshark’s split-tunneling-style feature. It can be useful when a banking app, local service or other program should use the normal connection while other traffic uses the VPN. CleanWeb is a separate blocking feature rather than a replacement for antivirus protection, secure accounts or careful browsing.
Surfshark’s Dausos protocol is an interesting 2026 development, but Surfshark explicitly labels it beta and currently limits it to the Mac App Store application. Its own troubleshooting guidance recommends switching to WireGuard or OpenVPN if Dausos causes connection or feature problems. Treat Dausos as an option to experiment with—not as a settled reason to select Surfshark.
Choose Surfshark if: you want broad functionality for a household or several devices and are comfortable using WireGuard or OpenVPN when the beta protocol is unreliable.
Look elsewhere if: you use an older Mac running an operating system before macOS 12, or you want the most conservative privacy-first product design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Mullvad: best privacy-first alternative
Mullvad is the most natural choice for technically informed users who prefer a restrained service with unusually prominent security documentation. Mullvad’s current Mac download page lists app version 2026.3 and support for macOS Sonoma 14 or later. That requirement is significantly newer than Proton’s, so compatibility should be checked before anything else.
The Mac app centers on WireGuard and documents split tunneling, automatic WireGuard key rotation, anti-censorship measures, traffic obfuscation, Multihop, Shadowsocks, a signed installer and an advanced kill switch. Mullvad also states a no-logging policy and lists a February 2026 security assessment and a November 2024 app audit on its current Mac page.
Those disclosures support Mullvad’s privacy-first position, but they do not prove that it is the fastest VPN or the best option for streaming. The available research does not establish either claim. Mullvad is a recommendation for transparent security practices and control, not an unsupported speed superlative.
Choose Mullvad if: you value security controls, transparent technical documentation and a focused privacy product.
Look elsewhere if: your Mac cannot run Sonoma 14, you want a heavily entertainment-focused service or you prefer a large bundle of convenience features.
Which VPN should you choose?
- Pick NordVPN for the best general-purpose experience and the strongest support from the supplied independent Mac testing.
- Pick Proton VPN if privacy-oriented design, Stealth and protocol flexibility are more important than effortless Mac feature parity.
- Pick Surfshark if you need a broad feature set across many devices and want a budget-oriented option.
- Pick Mullvad if you want a privacy-first alternative with recent security assessment and audit information prominently documented.
Mac VPN compatibility matters more than most rankings admit
A VPN service is only as useful as its Mac client. A provider can have excellent Windows features while offering a different implementation on macOS. Before subscribing, check both the minimum operating-system version and the installation channel.
| Provider | Documented Mac compatibility in the supplied research | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | macOS 10.12 or later | Whether the current app and all desired features still support your particular Mac and operating system |
| Surfshark | macOS 12 or later | Whether your Mac App Store or direct installation offers the protocol and Bypasser behavior you need |
| Mullvad | Current app 2026.3; macOS Sonoma 14 or later | Whether your Mac can run Sonoma 14 and whether legacy downloads remain suitable for your use |
| NordVPN | Current Mac releases are documented, with legacy-version distinctions | The current supported release and whether the website or App Store edition has the controls you want |
Older Macs deserve particular care. Installing an older VPN build may preserve compatibility, but it can also mean missing security fixes, newer protocols or current app features. If the provider offers only a legacy download, compare that trade-off with upgrading macOS or using a different provider.
App Store or direct download?
For many readers, the Mac App Store is the easiest installation route. It is familiar, keeps installation within Apple’s normal software workflow and may be the only place where a provider exposes a new Mac-specific beta feature—for example, Surfshark’s Dausos protocol.

The direct-download version can expose deeper controls. NordVPN documents a website version with custom DNS and a more granular app-level kill switch that are not presented identically in the App Store version. Proton’s WireGuard installation also requires enabling a macOS network extension. macOS displays a permission prompt for this type of network integration; read it carefully and approve it only for the VPN application you chose.
Neither distribution method is automatically safer in every respect. The practical question is which edition supports the features you need, receives updates for your operating system and comes from the provider’s official source.
VPN features that matter specifically on a Mac
Kill switch behavior
A kill switch prevents traffic from continuing over the ordinary connection if the VPN tunnel drops. Without one, a brief reconnection can expose the Mac’s normal public IP address and send traffic outside the encrypted tunnel.
Do not assume all kill switches work the same way:
- Whole-connection kill switch: blocks the Mac’s network traffic until the VPN reconnects.
- App-level kill switch: blocks selected applications while other Mac traffic may continue normally.
- Firewall-integrated protection: attempts to enforce the VPN boundary at a lower network level and can be more resistant to short transitions.
NordVPN’s Mac documentation distinguishes whole-connection and app-level behavior by app version. Mullvad describes tight firewall integration and atomic operations intended to prevent leaks. After enabling protection, test it: connect to the VPN, start a network-dependent app, briefly interrupt the VPN or change networks, and confirm whether the expected traffic is blocked. Do not rely solely on the label in the settings screen.
DNS and IPv6 leak protection
A VPN should route DNS requests through the VPN tunnel or otherwise prevent them from escaping to the ISP. IPv6 also matters: if a provider tunnels only IPv4 traffic but leaves IPv6 active, some destinations may see a direct connection. Look for documented DNS leak protection and IPv6 handling, then verify with an independent IP and DNS leak test.
Custom DNS can be useful for troubleshooting or for users with a trusted DNS setup, but it adds another configuration decision. If you do not have a specific reason to change DNS, the provider’s protected default is usually the simpler starting point.
Protocols
WireGuard is the sensible first choice among the providers in this comparison. It is modern, widely supported and generally designed to reduce overhead. However, no protocol is always fastest. A nearby server using OpenVPN can be more reliable than a distant WireGuard server, and a restrictive network may require TCP or obfuscation.
| Protocol or mode | When to try it | Mac examples in this shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | Normal everyday use; start here when available | NordLynx, Proton VPN, Surfshark and Mullvad |
| WireGuard TCP | When ordinary UDP-based VPN traffic is unreliable | Proton VPN |
| Stealth or obfuscation | When a network appears to detect or interfere with VPN traffic | Proton Stealth; Mullvad traffic obfuscation |
| OpenVPN | Compatibility and troubleshooting fallback | Surfshark; also supported in common manual configurations |
| Dausos | Experimental Mac-specific testing | Surfshark; beta and currently limited to its Mac App Store app |
Split tunneling
Split tunneling lets selected traffic use the VPN while other traffic uses the ordinary connection. It can help with local-network devices, banking services, workplace systems or apps that reject VPN addresses.
Mac support is not uniform. Proton’s implementation is experimental, excludes applications rather than individual websites, has WebKit-related limitations and works with WireGuard and Stealth rather than IKEv2. Surfshark’s Bypasser offers a different implementation. If you need Safari-specific rules, test them before relying on split tunneling for work or travel.
Privacy evidence
“No logs” is a provider statement, not self-proving evidence. A more useful evaluation asks:
- What information does the provider say it retains for account, billing, abuse prevention and operations?
- Has an independent audit or security assessment examined the relevant service or application?
- Does the provider clearly document its Mac client, installer and network permissions?
- Are advanced features explained precisely, including their limitations?
Mullvad’s Mac page prominently lists a February 2026 security assessment and a November 2024 app audit. The provider pages represented in this research primarily document compatibility and features rather than supplying a complete independent privacy evaluation for every service. That is why the shortlist uses different labels instead of declaring all four equally private.
How fast are these Mac VPNs?
VPN speed is a moving target, not a permanent product property. The result depends on the distance to the VPN server, local congestion, server load, ISP routing, protocol, Mac hardware, Wi-Fi quality, time of day and the destination service. A VPN can also improve a particular connection if an ISP route is unusually poor, although that is not guaranteed.

Tom’s Guide says its 2026 Mac testing included speed and streaming checks. TechRadar describes an expert-led process that evaluates installation, usability, privacy, speed and streaming. Those are useful attributed comparisons, but they are not a substitute for a reproducible test at your location. The honest conclusion is that NordVPN is the all-round leader in the supplied independent reference—not that it is proven fastest for every Mac user.
For your own comparison, test each provider under the same conditions:
- Run a baseline speed test with the VPN disconnected.
- Connect to a nearby server using the provider’s automatic setting or WireGuard.
- Repeat the download, upload and latency measurements at roughly the same time.
- Repeat with a nearby alternative server if the first result is poor.
- Try a fallback protocol only when reliability, access or compatibility is a problem.
- Check ordinary browsing, video calls and the specific services you use instead of judging only by one speed-test number.
How to install and configure a VPN on macOS
The easiest method: use the provider’s Mac app
- Check the operating-system requirement. Confirm that your Mac meets the provider’s current minimum. Proton, Surfshark and Mullvad have materially different requirements.
- Install from an official source. Use the provider’s official Mac download or its verified App Store listing. Avoid repackaged installers.
- Sign in and approve network permissions. macOS may ask you to enable a VPN or network extension. Proton specifically documents this step for its WireGuard implementation.
- Start with Quick Connect or Automatic. This normally selects a nearby or suitable server without requiring manual protocol decisions.
- Choose WireGuard or the provider’s WireGuard-based option if you want a sensible everyday default and the automatic mode does not already select it.
- Enable the kill switch and auto-connect. Auto-connect is particularly useful on public Wi-Fi. Decide whether whole-device or app-level protection better matches your needs.
- Connect and verify. Check the public IP address, DNS behavior and access to the apps or sites you care about.
When to use Apple’s built-in VPN controls
macOS can connect to a configured VPN through System Settings > VPN. This is useful for an employer, school, private server or a provider that supplies manual configuration details. Apple provides the configuration controls, but it does not bundle a consumer VPN subscription or a free VPN server. You still need a server address, account credentials, authentication details and a supported protocol or configuration file.
For a commercial consumer service, the native app is usually easier because it manages server selection, credentials, protocol changes, kill-switch behavior and updates. Manual setup can also omit features available only in the provider’s application.

Mac VPN troubleshooting
The VPN will not connect
- Switch from the automatic protocol to WireGuard.
- If WireGuard is blocked or unstable, try WireGuard TCP, Stealth, obfuscation or OpenVPN where offered.
- Try a nearby server rather than a specialized or distant location.
- Check whether another VPN, security tool or corporate network extension is already active.
- On macOS, review the network-extension permission and restart the app after granting it.
The internet stops after enabling the VPN
This may be the kill switch working as designed. Disconnect and reconnect, try another server and confirm that the Mac has not switched to a captive-portal login page. If the problem continues, temporarily change protocol for diagnosis; do not leave leak protection disabled permanently on an untrusted network.
An app ignores split-tunneling rules
Check whether the provider supports application exclusion or inclusion, whether the rule applies to the exact app binary and whether the app uses WebKit or a helper process. Proton’s documented Mac limitations are a specific reason not to assume that a browser or embedded web view will follow the same rule as a conventional application.
The App Store version lacks a setting
Compare the provider’s website-download and App Store editions. NordVPN documents meaningful differences in custom DNS and kill-switch granularity. Installing the other official edition may expose the control, but it can also change how permissions and updates are managed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a Mac VPN does—and does not—protect
A VPN encrypts traffic between the Mac and the VPN provider’s server and changes the public-facing IP address presented to destination services. That is useful on networks where you do not fully trust the local operator, when you want to reduce exposure of your home IP address, or when you need to connect through a different VPN exit location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt does not provide universal anonymity. Websites can still identify you through accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints and other signals. A VPN does not replace strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, endpoint security or protection against phishing and malicious downloads. Tracker blocking and malware-domain blocking, where offered, are additional features and should be evaluated separately from the encrypted tunnel.
Alternative setup: a VPN travel router
A VPN travel router can protect a MacBook through the router’s connection rather than requiring a VPN app on every device. This can be useful in hotels, rented accommodation or other public-Wi-Fi situations, especially when you want several devices to share one VPN connection.
D-Link describes the DBR-330 as a portable AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 VPN travel router intended for public Wi-Fi, travel and remote work. TP-Link’s ER605 illustrates the wider wired VPN-router category, including support for IPSec, OpenVPN and L2TP connections.
A travel router is not a replacement for a native Mac VPN app. It requires compatible firmware, a VPN provider that supports router configuration and additional setup. It may also be less convenient when you need per-app routing, a quick server change or protection away from the router. Treat it as an alternative setup for travelers and multi-device users, not as the answer to the query “best VPN for Mac.”
How the expert testing claim should be understood
This guide does not claim that we personally installed, benchmarked, leak-tested or streamed through every VPN listed. The phrase “tested by experts” refers to the independent publications cited in the research:

- TechRadar: its 2026 Mac VPN guide describes expert-led evaluation of installation, usability, privacy, speed and streaming.
Rankings can differ because publications use different locations, servers, test times, operating systems, protocols and scoring priorities. The provider documentation used here is most reliable for compatibility and feature descriptions; it should not be treated as independent proof of a provider’s speed, privacy or superiority.
Bottom line
For most Mac owners, start with NordVPN because it offers the best overall balance in the available 2026 Mac testing reference. Choose Proton VPN for a privacy-focused feature set and broader support for older macOS versions. Choose Surfshark for budget-conscious, many-device use, while treating its Dausos protocol as beta. Choose Mullvad when transparent security practices and a privacy-first design matter more than streaming claims or a large collection of extras.
Before installing any of them, check your macOS version, decide between the App Store and direct-download editions, enable the appropriate kill switch and test the specific apps and services you use. Those Mac-specific details matter more than a blanket claim that one VPN is always the fastest or safest.
