The best VPN for Germany depends on the location you need and what you want to do. Choose a service with German servers if you need a German IP, or servers in your home country if you are visiting Germany and need access to services there. Compare independently checked privacy claims, kill-switch and DNS/WebRTC leak protection, device support, streaming tests, and both introductory and renewal prices before subscribing.
Which VPN is best for your situation?
| Service | Best suited to | Evidence and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Privacy-focused users and streaming | Security.org lists Berlin and Frankfurt locations and highlights its privacy features. TechRadar selects it in streaming comparisons. These are reviewer findings; verify current locations, features, and price. |
| Surfshark | Families and many devices | Security.org notes unlimited simultaneous devices. TechRadar reported successful streaming playback and high WireGuard speed in its test context. Neither result guarantees permanent access or unlimited performance. |
| Proton VPN | Beginners and a no-cost starting option | Security.org highlights beginner-friendly apps. Heise reports a free plan without a data cap but with restricted country choice; confirm current free-plan features and streaming support. |
| Private Internet Access | Flexible German-location and streaming needs | Security.org includes it among Germany options. TechRadar tests reported German locations and access to several streaming services; suitability depends on current performance and your priorities. |
| CyberGhost or IPVanish | Readers comparing broader provider lists | Security.org includes both in its Germany comparison. Top10VPN names CyberGhost among services with trial or refund options. Check current terms, device limits, and availability in your country. |
These recommendations reflect comparison-site testing, not a universal ranking. Top10VPN says its 2026 Germany guide used 59 VPNs and more than 30,000 combined testing hours; Security.org says it considered more than 50 VPNs, conducted 2,500-plus research hours and 300 speed tests, consulted six experts, and recommended six services. Those figures describe each publication’s methodology, not VPN adoption or industry-wide performance.
Start with the IP address you need
Get a German IP while abroad
Connect to a German city server when a website or service must see you as being in Germany. Availability of Berlin, Frankfurt, or other locations varies by provider, so check the live server list rather than relying on an old roundup.
Reach home-country services from Germany
If you are temporarily visiting Germany, select a server in the country where your subscription is normally provided. A VPN changes the apparent source location, but the service can still identify VPN addresses and may apply its own account and licensing rules.

Check EU portability before using a VPN
Regulation (EU) 2017/1128 requires covered paid online-content services to let a subscriber temporarily present in another EU member state use the service in the same manner as in the member state of residence. A German resident visiting another EU country may therefore already have access without a VPN. The rule does not cover every free broadcaster, permanent relocation, or every cross-border catalogue. Check your service and circumstances against the EU regulation.
What to compare before subscribing
German server coverage
Count the German cities and server types that are actually available in the app you will use. A provider may advertise country coverage while offering only a small number of locations, and virtual locations can behave differently from physically located servers.
Privacy evidence, not just “no logs” wording
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its server and hides your IP address from destination services, but it shifts trust to the VPN operator. “No logs” is a provider claim unless an independent audit or other public verification supports it. Heise says it limits its comparison to services with publicly confirmed independent audit evidence and notes that external verification is difficult. Review the policy’s scope, date, and what data the audit examined.

Leak protection and emergency behavior
- Kill switch: blocks traffic if the VPN tunnel drops, preventing an accidental direct connection.
- DNS leak protection: keeps name-resolution requests from going to an unintended resolver.
- WebRTC leak controls: reduce the chance that a browser exposes an address through real-time communications.
- Protocol choice: WireGuard is commonly selected for speed, while the best option depends on the provider’s implementation and your network.
Test these controls on your own device after installation. A feature listed on a comparison page is not proof that every platform, browser, or setting is protected.
Streaming tests and their limits
TechRadar reports successful playback for selected services in its Germany and general streaming comparisons, including a high WireGuard-speed result for Surfshark in its test context. Such results are snapshots: streaming platforms block VPN addresses, providers rotate networks, and outcomes vary by country, account, server, and date. Treat a test as evidence of past performance, not a guarantee.
Devices, free plans, and total cost
Compare simultaneous-device limits, supported operating systems, and router support if you need to protect a whole household. Calculate the full first-term price and renewal price; promotional rates and plan terms change. Proton VPN’s free plan is reported by Heise as having no data cap but restricted country choice, so “free” does not mean unrestricted German or streaming access. Read the current refund conditions before paying.

Is using a VPN legal in Germany?
TechRadar’s Germany guide says VPNs are legal in Germany, while also warning that unlawful copyright activity remains unlawful and that streaming-platform terms may apply. This is general information, not legal advice. No VPN makes copyright infringement legal, guarantees anonymity, or overrides a service’s contract. Use the service for lawful activity and check the rules that apply to your account and location.
Do you need a VPN on public Wi-Fi?
A VPN can encrypt the path from your device to the VPN server, which can reduce exposure to people operating or monitoring an untrusted hotspot. It does not replace HTTPS, operating-system updates, multifactor authentication, malware protection, or careful handling of login pages. Germany’s GDPR framework protects personal data but does not secure a compromised device or make every Wi-Fi network safe, as Security.org notes.
How to choose and set up a Germany VPN
- Define the required endpoint: Germany for a German IP, or your home country for home services.
- Shortlist providers with the needed city coverage, app support, and simultaneous-device allowance.
- Read the privacy policy and look for a dated, independently verified audit with a clearly stated scope.
- Confirm kill-switch, DNS, and WebRTC controls in the apps you will use.
- Check current introductory and renewal pricing, refund terms, and any free-plan restrictions.
- Install the official app, sign in, select the required country or city, and enable the kill switch before browsing.
- Verify your apparent IP and run DNS/WebRTC leak checks, then test the specific service you care about.
Why a VPN may not work for a streaming service
- The platform has blocked the server’s IP range; try another server or wait for the provider’s network to change.
- Your account, payment country, or content licence does not permit the requested catalogue.
- Browser location data, cookies, DNS settings, or GPS signals conflict with the VPN location; clear site data or use the platform’s supported app settings.
- The VPN connection is unstable or too slow; change protocol or server and confirm that the kill switch is not interrupting traffic.
If access remains unavailable, use the service’s licensed offering for your actual location. Do not assume that a successful test on one date will continue.

Can I watch my home streaming services while traveling in Germany?
Possibly, by connecting to a server in your home country, but the platform may block VPN addresses or restrict access under its licence and terms. If you are temporarily traveling within the EU, Regulation (EU) 2017/1128 may already provide portability for a qualifying paid service.
Do I need a VPN for public Wi-Fi in Germany?
Not legally. A VPN can encrypt traffic to its server on an untrusted hotspot, but HTTPS, updates, multifactor authentication, and device security remain necessary.
