Set sleep sounds to the lowest level that masks the specific noise waking you, measured at the pillow rather than by a device’s percentage display. For most adults, start with a 30- to 60-minute timer and a gradual fade. Try 90 minutes if you regularly need longer to fall asleep. If traffic, a snoring partner, or another disturbance continues all night, quiet continuous playback can be more useful than a timer because stopping the sound also stops the masking.
These are practical starting points, not universal medical prescriptions. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s 2022 systematic review concluded that the effectiveness of auditory stimulation for sleep is “not well established.” Infant and child use requires a stricter approach: place the source as far from the sleep space as practical, use the lowest workable volume, and limit duration with a timer or shutoff.
How loud should sleep sounds be?
There is no authoritative universal adult setting such as one volume percentage or one decibel number. A device set to 30 percent can produce a very different sound level from another device set to 30 percent, and room size, speaker placement, bedding, and the listener’s position all change what reaches the ear. The useful target is therefore functional: enough sound to soften or mask the disruptive noise, but not so much that the sleep sound itself becomes attention-grabbing.

Judge the result where you sleep. A machine across the room may sound quiet beside the bed but loud at its speaker, while a phone on a nightstand can be close to your ear even at a low setting. Listen from your normal pillow position, with the room arranged as it is during sleep.

A cautious adult volume method
- Position the source. When practical, put the machine between the bed and the disturbance, such as a window facing traffic or the side of the bed occupied by a snoring partner. Do not place it directly beside your head merely to make a low device setting seem louder.
- Start at the lowest audible level. Begin with a setting you can clearly hear from the pillow but that does not dominate the room.
- Increase in small steps. Raise the level only until intermittent noises are masked or softened enough that they no longer trigger awakenings. Stop as soon as that goal is reached.
- Evaluate at the ear position. Device percentages are not standardized sound measurements. Your pillow position is the relevant listening point.
- Check for irritation. If the sound becomes something you actively notice, feels harsh, or makes a conversation difficult, lower it. A masking sound should recede into the background once you are lying down.
- Reassess the underlying problem. If sleep remains poor after reasonable masking, do not keep increasing volume indefinitely. Address the traffic source, room arrangement, light, temperature, or another possible sleep problem.
What “masked enough” means
Masking does not require making the bedroom silent or making the sleep sound louder than every outside noise. The practical test is whether brief events stop pulling your attention toward them. A steady fan-like sound may soften an occasional vehicle or hallway noise without eliminating it completely. If each peak still causes an awakening, move the source closer to the path of the disturbance when safe, choose a steadier sound, or examine whether the event is too loud for masking to be a sensible solution.
Why a fixed decibel recommendation would mislead
The evidence does not establish one best adult level across rooms and listeners. The AASM review found that white- and pink-noise stimulation is used to mask sounds and facilitate relaxation, but that its effectiveness is not well established. That uncertainty applies to claims that one precise number works for everyone. Treat any number found in a product guide as a device- or situation-specific reference, not a universal sleep prescription.
Which timer should you use?
Choose a timer according to when the sound is needed, not according to a claim that one duration is medically optimal. A timer is mainly useful when the sound helps you fall asleep but is unnecessary after that. A continuous setting is more logical when the disruptive noise continues through the night and stopping playback would remove the masking.
Recommended Free Tools
| Timer | Best first use | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | Short wind-down or a person who usually falls asleep quickly | If the sound stops while you are still awake, try 60 minutes rather than immediately raising volume. |
| 60 minutes | A common starting point when falling asleep takes longer than a brief wind-down | Use a fade if an abrupt stop makes you alert. |
| 90 minutes | A longer sleep-onset trial when 30 or 60 minutes ends too soon | Confirm that the extra playback is helping sleep onset, not simply becoming a habit that masks another issue. |
| Continuous, low level | Traffic, pets, a partner’s noise, or another disturbance that persists overnight | Keep the level as low as effective and make sure the device will not create notification, charging, or overheating problems. |
Use a fade instead of a sudden stop
A gradual fade can make a timer less noticeable. Some sleep-sound devices provide a gentle reduction in level before the auto-off point; others stop abruptly. If a sudden silence wakes you, select a fade option when available, extend the timer from 30 to 60 minutes, or use continuous low-level playback when the disturbance is still present.

A simple timer experiment
- Use 30 minutes for several nights if your normal sleep-onset period is short.
- Move to 60 minutes if you are still awake when the sound ends or if the stop itself is disruptive.
- Try 90 minutes when 60 minutes consistently ends too soon.
- Use continuous playback only when the target noise continues and the masking is clearly useful after sleep onset.
Change one variable at a time. If you change volume, sound type, placement, and timer together, you will not know which change helped or caused a problem.
Should sleep sounds stay on all night?
All-night playback is a practical option for an ongoing disturbance, but it is not automatically better. If the outside sound stops after bedtime, a timer avoids unnecessary playback. If the disturbance is intermittent throughout the night, shutting off the masking may allow the next event to wake you. In that case, a quiet continuous setting may be preferable to repeatedly restarting a timer.
For continuous use, keep the level at the minimum that works, choose a steady sound that does not invite active listening, and place the source where it masks the disturbance without being close to your ear. Check that the device’s display, notifications, charging cable, or automatic volume behavior will not introduce a new sleep interruption.

Use a more conservative standard for infants and young children than for adults. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) technical report published in 2023 examined 14 infant sleep machines. At a distance of 30 cm, every tested device exceeded 50 dBA at maximum output, and three exceeded 85 dBA. The report notes that exposure at those levels for more than eight hours could exceed occupational noise limits and potentially risk noise-induced hearing loss.

Those findings do not make 50 dBA, 85 dBA, or a particular distance a universal AAP setting. They show why maximum-output demonstrations and close placement can be hazardous. The AAP’s practical instruction is qualitative: “If ISMs are used, it may be safer to locate them as far away as possible from the infant, to set the volume as low as possible, and to limit the duration of use by using a timed shut-off or turning off the ISM once the infant is asleep.”
Safer setup for an infant
- Increase distance. Put the sound machine as far from the crib or sleep space as practical. Do not attach it to the crib or place it beside the infant’s head.
- Use the lowest workable level. Start at the minimum and raise it only enough to provide a modest, useful background sound.
- Limit duration. Set a timer or turn the machine off once the child is asleep, following the AAP’s recommendation to limit exposure.
- Keep controls inaccessible. Place cords and the device where the child cannot pull, chew, or change the settings.
- Recheck after moving the device. Distance changes perceived loudness, so verify the level from the sleep position rather than relying on the original setting.
Do not translate the AAP report into a universal “safe” number or assume that a machine marketed for nurseries is safe at its maximum setting. The tested devices varied, and the report’s recommendation emphasizes distance, the lowest workable volume, and limited duration.
What about older children?
The same conservative principles remain sensible: keep the source away from the bed, avoid maximum output, and use a shutoff when continuous playback is not needed. If a child reports ringing, discomfort, ear pain, or difficulty hearing normal conversation after use, stop the sound and seek appropriate medical advice.

White noise
White noise is a broad, steady hiss often used to camouflage traffic, voices, pets, or partner noise. It can be useful when the disturbance is intermittent, but its higher-frequency character bothers some listeners. Reduce the level or try another texture rather than compensating for irritation by turning it up.
Pink or brown noise
Pink and brown sounds are alternative steady textures with different frequency balances. The AASM evidence does not establish one of them as universally more effective. Select by listening comfort and masking performance, not by the name of the sound.
Fan, rain, and environmental recordings
Fan-like sounds can provide a consistent bed for sleep. Rain and other recordings may contain changing peaks; those variations can be pleasant for some people but attention-grabbing for others. If a recording makes you anticipate the next sound, switch to a steadier option.

Dedicated machine or phone app?
Both can generate sleep-oriented sounds. NIH describes apps and devices that make white noise and other sleep sounds, while CDC sleep guidance lists white-noise machines, fans, earplugs, and related options for reducing bedroom noise. The better choice depends on placement, controls, reliability, and the disturbance you are trying to mask.

| Comparison point | Dedicated sound machine | Phone app |
|---|---|---|
| Masking and placement | Usually easy to position between the sleeper and the disturbance; designed for bedside use. | Flexible placement, but the phone may need to remain near a charger or may be inconvenient to position away from the bed. |
| Volume control | Physical controls can provide direct, repeatable adjustments; check that the range allows a very low setting. | On-screen controls can be smooth, but operating-system volume behavior varies by device and app. |
| Timer and fade | Look for 30-, 60-, and 90-minute auto-off choices and a gradual fade. | Verify that the app supports the duration and fade you want and continues working when the screen is locked. |
| Sound options | Often includes several built-in textures such as white, pink, brown, fan, or rain. | Can offer a wide catalog, but changing tracks or unexpected audio may become distracting. |
| Nighttime reliability | Does not normally receive calls or notifications; check power behavior and indicator lights. | Disable notifications, prevent screen light, check battery or charging safety, and ensure another app cannot interrupt playback. |
For either option, the deciding test is the same: can you place it appropriately, set a low enough level, select a sound you can ignore, and use a timer or fade reliably?
Settings for common bedroom problems
Traffic and aircraft
Place the source between the bed and the window or wall facing the noise. Begin quietly and increase only until individual peaks no longer pull your attention. If traffic continues overnight, continuous low-level playback may prevent the masking from disappearing during the early morning.
A snoring or restless partner
Position the sound source on your side of the bed or between the two sleepers, without placing it close to either person’s ear. A steady fan-like texture may be easier to ignore than a recording with changing events. If the partner’s noise is loud enough to remain intrusive at a comfortable level, consider room arrangement or other non-audio solutions instead of increasing volume.
Pets, hallway activity, and household sounds
Use a short timer when activity is concentrated around bedtime. If sounds occur unpredictably throughout the night, test continuous playback at the lowest level that softens them. Keep the device’s controls inaccessible to children and pets.
Troubleshooting volume and timer problems
The sound is not masking anything
- Check the level at the pillow, not beside the device.
- Move the source toward the path between the disturbance and the bed.
- Try a steadier sound texture.
- Increase only in small steps and stop when masking is adequate.
The sound keeps me awake
- Lower the volume until it recedes into the background.
- Switch from a changing recording to a steady texture.
- Try a different sound color if the current frequency balance feels harsh.
- Use a fade so the timer does not end with an abrupt silence.
I wake when the timer ends
- Extend 30 minutes to 60, then to 90 if needed.
- If the disturbance continues, compare a quiet continuous setting with a timer.
- Check whether the device’s lights, notifications, or charging behavior—not the silence itself—causes the awakening.
I need an increasingly loud setting
Stop raising the volume automatically. Recheck placement, identify whether the disturbance has changed, and consider whether another sleep issue is responsible. Masking is intended to reduce attention to noise, not to overpower every sound in the room.
Evidence and limitations
CDC guidance recommends a bedroom free from noise that can disturb sleep and lists white-noise machines, fans, earplugs, and related devices as options. CDC/NIOSH also describes fans or white-noise machines as ways to camouflage traffic, jets, pets, and bed-partner noise. NIH recognizes apps and devices that generate white noise and other sleep-oriented sounds.
These sources support using sound as one environmental strategy; they do not identify a universally optimal adult volume, sound color, or timer duration. The AASM’s 2022 systematic review states that the effectiveness of auditory stimulation for sleep is not well established. Use the individualized method above, monitor whether it actually improves sleep, and avoid treating a device setting as a medical guarantee.
