IINA is the best starting point for most Mac users looking to replace VLC: it pairs an mpv playback engine with a macOS-oriented interface, picture-in-picture, customizable controls, and plugins. If you mainly want to cast local video to a television, investigate Elmedia instead—but verify its current device support and paid-feature limits before choosing it.
One distinction matters: playing an online stream in an app is not the same as casting a file from your Mac to a TV. The right alternative depends on which of those jobs you need.

The macOS requirements above come from each project’s own download information; check the specific release page for your Mac before installing. The Elmedia details are less definitive because the available feature description is vendor-affiliated rather than independent testing.
Why IINA is the strongest default replacement
IINA is designed for macOS and built on mpv. Its project describes features such as trackpad gestures, media controls, picture-in-picture, customizable controls, and integration with mpv configuration and scripts. The project also lists subtitles, playlists, chapters, filters, online subtitle searching, a command-line tool, and browser extensions. The official project is free and open source under GPLv3. A paid App Store listing also appears under the IINA name, but it is a separate listing and should not be confused with the free project distributed through iina.io and GitHub. The official project says it does not include tracking or telemetry.
Know what its streaming plugins do
IINA’s project lists an Online Media plugin that enhances online streaming and downloading, as well as an OpenSubtitles plugin for subtitle search and downloads. It also lists a community-maintained AirPlay plugin that can cast the current file to Apple TV while IINA remains the remote. That is a plugin—not built-in, universal casting support—so check its current instructions and compatibility with your target device.

When VLC is still the better choice
Replacing VLC is not necessary if it already handles your files and streams. VideoLAN describes VLC as a free, open-source player for most multimedia files, DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Its Mac page lists version 3.0.24 as a universal 95 MB package, with separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads. Check the VideoLAN macOS download page for the current build and release notes.
VideoLAN states that the current line runs on Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later; users of earlier operating systems are directed to older releases, and support has ended for the legacy releases listed there. That broad stated floor does not mean every current feature works on every old Mac: use the release notes for the version you plan to install.

Choose by what you mean by “streaming”
Opening an online stream on your Mac
For network streams, VLC’s stated support for various streaming protocols makes it a reasonable option to keep. IINA offers an Online Media plugin, but check the plugin’s current description for the sources and workflow it supports rather than assuming it accepts every stream URL.
Sending a local movie to a TV
If you want the Mac player to send a local file to a television, investigate Elmedia’s current support for AirPlay, Chromecast, and DLNA. Those capabilities are described in a vendor-affiliated comparison, not independently verified here; confirm that the exact protocol, receiving device, and features you need are supported by the current product version. IINA’s community AirPlay plugin is another possibility for Apple TV, but it is not equivalent to built-in casting across TV brands.

Check these details before switching
- macOS compatibility: Compare your installed macOS version and Mac processor with the download page for the exact release.
- How you play media: Decide whether you need local files, online streams, DVDs or discs, subtitles, or a combination.
- TV workflow: Identify whether your receiving device uses AirPlay, Chromecast, DLNA, or another method; a player that handles network streams may not cast local video to that device.
- Where you download: Get IINA from its official project site or GitHub, and VLC from VideoLAN. Confirm the publisher before installing similarly named listings.
QuickTime Player and Movist are also names readers may encounter, but the available source material does not establish enough current, primary documentation to compare their relevant features here.
