For trying on a specific item you may buy, Google Shopping Try-On is the clearest documented option. It lets eligible shoppers preview supported clothing from Google product listings. For experimenting with outfit photos from other sources, Google Doppl was designed for broader styling and animated previews—but Google’s current help page signals that the app is shutting down, so check whether it is still available before relying on it.
Neither tool can tell you whether a garment will fit. Treat the image as a visual preview, then use the retailer’s size chart and product information to make a purchase decision.
Which virtual try-on app should you use?
| Tool | Best for | What you provide | Output | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Shopping Try-On | Previewing an eligible product you found through Google | A photo of yourself, or a digital version where available | Generated clothing visualization | Only eligible listings show “Try it on”; country, age, account, and settings restrictions apply. |
| Google Doppl | Experimenting with an outfit photo or screenshot from elsewhere | An outfit image, such as a shop or social-media image | Generated images and animated video | Google’s current help page is titled “Download items in Doppl before app shuts down”; current access and timing are unclear. |
These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable shopping apps. Shopping Try-On is tied to eligible product listings. Doppl was built to visualize outfits sourced beyond Google Shopping. The available official documentation does not support a comprehensive ranking of every third-party app, so this comparison focuses on the two tools with documented features and limitations.
Google Shopping Try-On: best for eligible Google product listings
How to use it
- Search Google Search, Shopping, or Images for an eligible clothing item.
- Open a product that displays the “Try it on” control. If the control is missing, the listing is not eligible. Sponsored Shopping Ads do not offer it.
- Select “Try it on” and upload a photo of yourself or a photo you have permission to use.
- Review the generated image, then check the retailer’s product details, reviews, and size chart before buying.
Google says a selfie or full-body photo can work. For a clearer visualization, use good lighting, a clean background, fitted clothing, and a photo in which your hands are visible. In the US, shoppers can also create a digital version from a selfie using Nano Banana and may choose their usual clothing size during creation. Choosing a size for the digital version does not turn the result into a fit recommendation.

What it supports—and where
Google’s shopper help describes tops, bottoms, and dresses. Merchant documentation also includes shoes. Lingerie, swimwear, and accessories are excluded. Availability listed in Google’s help includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the US. You must be logged in, be at least 18, and have the specified activity and personalization settings enabled. Feature coverage and availability can change.
Product coverage depends on eligible listings, not simply on whether an item appears in a Google result. Google says its Shopping Graph contains “billions of product listings,” but that product-coverage statement does not establish that any particular listing has try-on enabled.

What the preview can and cannot tell you
Google describes the image as a visual approximation, not an exact representation of the garment on your body. The generated result may alter body or garment details. Google Merchant Center says: “The generated image can help people find how an item might look, but it doesn’t indicate fit, suggest a size or indicate size availability from the merchant.” Use the retailer’s measurements and return policy—not the generated image—to judge whether an item is likely to work for you.
Product image quality can affect the result. Google Merchant Center recommends high-resolution product images, ideally 1024 pixels or higher, and cautions that generated visualizations may contain mistakes. That recommendation concerns the images used for product listings, not a requirement that shoppers upload a photo at that resolution.

Photo privacy
Google says Shopping Try-On photos are used to create the generated try-on image, are not used to train its models, and are not shared with other Google products or third-party affiliates. Google says users can delete their original photo and generated images. These statements apply to Shopping Try-On; do not assume they describe other try-on apps.
Google Doppl: broader outfit experiments, but check shutdown status
Google Labs announced Doppl on June 26, 2025, as an experimental app for iOS and Android in the US. It let users upload an outfit photo or screenshot—from a store, social media, or another source—and generate images and animated video on a digital version of themselves. Google cautioned at launch that fit, appearance, and garment details could be inaccurate, saying, “As a Google Labs experiment, Doppl is in its early days and it might not always get things right.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
There is an important current-status caveat: the official Google Labs help result is titled “Download items in Doppl before app shuts down.” The reviewed help text gives guidance about outfit images, including showing one complete outfit clearly, but does not establish the precise shutdown date. Confirm the app’s status and any export deadline directly before trying to install or use it; its launch announcement is not evidence that it remains available.
Doppl privacy differs from Shopping Try-On
Google’s Doppl privacy information says the service collects uploads, generated output, usage information, and feedback. It says this data may be used to provide, improve, and develop Google products and machine learning. By default, data is stored until the user deletes it; a sample may be reviewed by people for quality purposes, with account-disconnection precautions. Users can switch off “Product improvement.” Google says deleted data may remain associated with the account for up to 30 days. Consider those terms before uploading personal images.

How to choose—and shop more safely
- Choose Shopping Try-On when you have found a supported item in Google and its listing has the “Try it on” control.
- Consider Doppl only if it is still accessible and you want to experiment with a complete outfit image or screenshot rather than an eligible Google product listing.
- Use either result as inspiration, not sizing advice. Check garment measurements, merchant size availability, customer reviews, and product details separately.
- Review image and privacy settings before uploading. A photo may include more personal information than the garment preview requires.
There is no verified independent statistic here showing that virtual try-on improves fit accuracy, changes return rates, or outperforms one tool over another. Claims that an app guarantees fit or reduces returns are not established by the official product information described above.
