For a conventional FFmpeg playlist sent to YouTube Live, use H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS. Set constant bitrate (CBR), progressive video, square pixels and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube allows up to four seconds. Match resolution, frame rate and bitrate to YouTube’s current stream settings and to an upload connection that can sustain them. Separately, make sure playlist files are compatible before attempting stream copy: mismatched inputs may need normalization or re-encoding.
What “video format” means for a YouTube playlist
“Format” can refer to the file container, the audio and video codecs, or the protocol that carries the live stream. These are separate decisions. An .mp4 extension by itself does not make arbitrary files compatible with FFmpeg concatenation or determine the format YouTube receives.
- Container: how audio and video streams are packaged in a file.
- Codecs: how the audio and video are encoded. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative baseline for ordinary RTMPS ingestion.
- Ingest protocol: how FFmpeg sends the live output to YouTube, commonly RTMPS.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265 and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; support depends on protocol and use case. HDR has separate requirements. Use the settings for the protocol and stream type you actually choose rather than assuming every listed codec is interchangeable. YouTube’s live encoder settings provides current platform guidance.

Stream copy when inputs match
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can concatenate compatible files without re-encoding. Before relying on stream copy, inspect every file for matching codec, dimensions, frame rate and time base, pixel format, audio codec, sample rate and channel layout. The FFmpeg FAQ explains the compatibility constraints for the concat demuxer: joining video files.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

When inputs do not match, normalize or re-encode them to a common configuration, or build a filter-based concatenation workflow. That adds processing work, but avoids treating mismatched streams as if they were interchangeable. The exact choice depends on the files and the available encoding capacity.
Test transitions, not just individual files
Compatibility does not guarantee seamless playback. Play through the actual playlist and inspect file boundaries for pauses, image changes, audio gaps or unexpected transitions. The FFmpeg documentation does not promise gapless results for every set of inputs.

Set YouTube’s live output parameters
- Video codec: H.264 is the straightforward baseline for a conventional RTMPS stream.
- Audio codec: AAC is a suitable baseline; YouTube also lists MP3 in its encoder guidance.
- Rate control: use CBR.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Scan and pixels: use progressive scan and square pixel aspect ratio.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 / 8-bit for SDR.
- Stereo audio: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo AAC/MP3 guidance.
- Resolution, frame rate and video bitrate: select values supported by the stream setup and stable on your actual upload connection. Check YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate bitrate table rather than relying on a generic number; the applicable values vary by output settings.
These are YouTube’s stated encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular playlist or network will remain stable. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned content, then watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during operation. YouTube Live encoder settings
Use RTMPS unless your workflow calls for HLS
RTMPS: the conventional continuous-ingestion choice
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” For a conventional continuous FFmpeg stream, it is the usual secure-ingestion choice. Use the ingest server address and stream key supplied by YouTube’s Live Control Room or API; depending on the encoder, these may be entered separately or combined. Treat the key as a secret, and do not publish it in a command transcript or configuration shared with others. YouTube Live API stream documentation

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
HLS: segmented delivery with additional requirements
HLS is a distinct ingest option, not just another name for RTMPS. Its segment-based delivery has greater latency. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. Choose it when the protocol’s capabilities or YouTube’s guidance for a particular use case justify implementing those requirements. YouTube’s streaming protocol guidance
HDR and other codec exceptions
For ordinary SDR RTMPS output, H.264 with AAC remains the conservative baseline described above. If the stream is HDR, follow YouTube’s separate HDR guidance: it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and identifies HLS as an option when the encoder lacks the required RTMP capabilities. Confirm current requirements before building an HDR pipeline, since codec and protocol support are use-case dependent. YouTube encoder guidance

Test and monitor a continuous playlist
- Inspect all inputs. Compare their video and audio stream properties before choosing stream copy.
- Run the complete playlist as a test. Check transitions, audio continuity and whether FFmpeg can process the files in sequence.
- Send a test stream using the intended output settings. YouTube recommends content with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check YouTube stream health and messages. Correct warnings or connection problems before depending on the process continuously.
- Recheck after changes. Replacing files, changing output parameters, updating FFmpeg or changing the connection can alter compatibility or reliability.
A command template alone cannot prove that a stream will run without interruption. Reliability also depends on the files, FFmpeg build, encoding capacity, connection stability and YouTube’s current ingest behavior.
Common problems and what to check
- Concat or stream-copy errors: compare codec, dimensions, frame rate/time base, pixel format and audio properties across the inputs. Normalize or re-encode files that do not meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements.
- Visible or audible breaks at file boundaries: test the exact playlist and inspect adjacent files. Compatibility does not establish seamless transitions.
- YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: verify that the upload connection can reliably sustain the selected output, and check YouTube’s current recommended settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Keyframe warnings: configure a two-second interval and keep it at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Connection or authentication failure: confirm that the ingest address and stream key are current and entered in the format expected by the encoder. Keep the key private.
- Codec or HDR mismatch: verify that the codec is supported for the protocol and use case. Follow the separate HDR instructions rather than assuming SDR settings apply.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to keep an FFmpeg computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.

Copyright and YouTube live rules
Having technically compatible files does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast them or that a continuous playlist complies with YouTube’s policies. Confirm you have permission for the video and audio, including music, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before broadcasting. A successful test in the Live Control Room checks stream delivery, not copyright clearance.
