That is YouTube’s separate video-upload recommendation, not a requirement that a live-loop source file must be MP4. The live feed’s settings are controlled by the encoder or cloud service sending it: YouTube generally recommends RTMPS, H.264, AAC, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. For an ordinary 1080p30 H.264 stream, its current recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps.
The distinction matters: the file you play and the encoded live stream you send are different things. YouTube detects the incoming stream settings and transcodes the live feed for viewers on different devices and networks.
Choose the source file format
Use an MP4 source with H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical starting point for broad compatibility. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 and lists H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio; it also recommends progressive video and 48 kHz audio. Those are upload recommendations, however—not a stated mandate for prerecorded files used as a live source. Your encoder or playback service reads the file and creates the stream sent to YouTube. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations
If your existing video uses another container or codec, do not assume YouTube will reject the live stream just because the source is not MP4. Check whether the playback software or service can decode it reliably, and confirm that its outgoing live feed meets YouTube’s ingestion requirements. Avoid unnecessary conversion: transcoding can take time and may reduce quality if the export settings are unsuitable.

Configure the live feed sent to YouTube
For a standard prerecorded loop, RTMPS is YouTube’s general ingestion recommendation. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The encoder’s capabilities and your connection determine which settings are practical. YouTube live encoder settings
Recommended baseline settings
- Protocol: RTMPS, unless your workflow has a specific reason to use another supported ingestion method.
- Video codec: H.264 is a straightforward baseline. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; choose a codec your encoder supports reliably.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps. Use the frame rate appropriate to the source and your available bandwidth rather than increasing it without need.
- Picture structure: progressive scan and square pixels. YouTube’s general advanced recommendations also specify two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Stereo audio: 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

These selected values are from YouTube’s current live-encoder table. The minimum is not the same as the recommended target. Do not apply the H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265: their listed rates differ.

| Ingest format | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For comparison, YouTube lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265 at 1080p30, and 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended at 1080p60. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular upload connection will sustain a stream. Select a resolution and bitrate that remain reliable on your connection, and leave capacity for ordinary network variation.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream
YouTube Help advises that the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. For example, a stream targeting 14 Mbps needs more than 14 Mbps of upload capacity to preserve that headroom; the connection should be stable, not merely capable of that speed in a brief test. Check the encoder’s actual upload bitrate and YouTube’s stream health while testing. YouTube streaming tips

- If the feed drops frames or stream health degrades, lower the bitrate or resolution, or use a more stable connection.
- Do not compensate for a weak connection by selecting a higher target bitrate.
- Check both picture and audio in YouTube’s preview before making the stream public.
When HLS is the right alternative
HLS is a specialized alternative, not the usual first choice for a simple prerecorded loop. YouTube points to it for HDR streaming or codecs that RTMP does not support. Its HLS ingestion requires HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; byte ranges are unsupported. HLS supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. Because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, it has higher latency. YouTube HLS ingestion instructions
Set up the loop, then test it before going live
The source file format does not create the loop. The playback software or cloud service must repeat the video or playlist and send the resulting feed to YouTube. Loop controls and whether a transition is seamless depend on that specific tool; do not assume every tool loops without a gap. Test the full workflow before relying on it for an extended broadcast.

- Prepare the source: use a file your playback tool can decode; MP4 with H.264/AAC is a practical starting combination.
- Configure the outgoing stream: select RTMPS where supported, then set codec, CBR, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s recommendations and your connection.
- Connect the encoder: enter the YouTube stream key in the encoder or service. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it private; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube stream keys
- Preview and monitor: verify the picture, sound, stream health, and loop behavior in YouTube before treating the broadcast as ready. Monitor audio and video during the stream.
YouTube’s recommendations concern the incoming stream and its delivery. They do not guarantee a gap-free transition when a particular file repeats; that depends on the playback tool and how the source is encoded.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the feed: check that the encoder is using the correct stream key and a supported ingestion setup. If you changed keys, update the encoder as well.
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: compare the actual upload bitrate with available upload capacity. Reduce the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target with headroom.
- Unexpected quality: confirm the outgoing codec and resolution, not just the local file extension. The source container does not define the settings of the encoded live feed.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: inspect the encoder’s audio input, codec, sample rate, and bitrate, then preview the feed. YouTube’s listed stereo recommendation is AAC or MP3 with 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- A pause appears between repeats: check the playback software’s loop behavior and source boundaries. YouTube’s ingestion settings do not make every source loop seamless.
- HLS setup fails: check HTTPS delivery, TS segments, and rolling-playlist constraints, including the limit of five outstanding segments and the lack of byte-range support.
Keep the YouTube stream running without a computer at home
For a do-it-yourself setup, the playback or encoder software must keep reading and looping the source while maintaining the connection to YouTube. If you want that job handled in the cloud instead, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously:

Copyright and reused-content checks still matter
Using a compatible file and meeting encoder settings does not grant rights to the content or guarantee YouTube monetization. Before looping a recording, confirm you have the rights to its video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A continuous live presentation is still subject to those rules. Use the copyright safety checklist to review common issues before you broadcast.
