For a church streaming a 1080p30 production to YouTube, start with H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, Rec. 709 for SDR, and the H.264 bitrate shown in YouTube’s current live-encoder table. A retrieved YouTube Help result listed 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30, but captured variants conflict on those H.264 figures; check the live table before locking in a number. Settings help, but no preset guarantees a nonstop stream: sustained upload capacity, testing, power, and monitoring matter too.

Recommended starting format and settings

Match the stream to the church’s actual production feed rather than selecting the highest resolution by default. If the source is 1080p30 and the encoder and connection can sustain it, use the settings below as a starting point. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance is the authority for current values; its retrieved page variants did not agree on H.264 bitrate figures, so confirm that table in YouTube Help before configuring the encoder.

Setting Starting point Notes
Video format H.264 A straightforward baseline when compatibility is the priority. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for live ingestion.
Resolution and frame rate 1080p at 30 fps, if that matches the source For a lower-bandwidth alternative, consider 720p30. Use a higher frame rate only when the source and production need it and the connection has headroom.
Video bitrate Use YouTube’s current live table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate A retrieved table listed H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30; captured variants conflict, so treat those as provisional rather than universal.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS; RTMP is also listed.
Color Rec. 709 for SDR Choose the color space that matches the production. This recommendation is for standard dynamic range.
Audio Stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz These are YouTube’s listed live audio settings.

These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your church’s encoder, internet connection, or production quality. A bitrate that works for a mostly static pulpit may struggle with a moving camera, congregation, or detailed stage lighting. Test with representative audio and movement before relying on a preset.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec

When 1080p30 makes sense

Use 1080p30 when the production feed is actually 1080p30 and the connection can reliably carry the required outbound traffic with room to spare. It can preserve more fine detail than 720p, but it also requires more capacity in YouTube’s bitrate recommendations.

When to step down to 720p30

If outbound bandwidth is limited or unstable, 720p30 is a sensible lower-bandwidth test. At the same frame rate, a lower resolution has a lower H.264 recommendation in the retrieved YouTube table. The right trade-off depends on what matters most in your service: a clear wide shot, readable lyrics, or a reliable feed through movement and busy scenes.

H.264, H.265, or AV1

H.264 is a practical starting choice when compatibility with the encoder and workflow matters. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, but codec selection affects the recommended bitrate. In the retrieved table, H.265 and AV1 entries were 6 Mbps at 1080p30 and 720p30, while the H.264 entries were inconsistent across page captures. Verify the current official table and ensure the encoder supports the selected codec before switching.

Do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-upload bitrate recommendations to configure a live encoder. Upload encoding guidance describes file uploads and lists different recommendations; it is not the live-ingest table. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings only when preparing a prerecorded file for upload.

Size the internet connection for the stream

Plan around sustained outbound capacity, not the download speed shown by a typical speed test. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom and accounting for both the primary stream and any backup stream if one is used. For example, a backup feed adds traffic; it is not covered by the primary encoder’s bitrate alone.

  • Test upload throughput from the location and connection the encoder will use.
  • Leave the recommended headroom rather than setting the encoder bitrate equal to the full measured upload speed.
  • Account for a backup feed and other simultaneous uploads when estimating total outbound demand.
  • Repeat tests at the times the church expects to stream, since congestion can vary.

A brief speed test cannot establish that a connection will hold steady for an entire service. Test the complete setup for a representative duration and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.

Configure and test the encoder

  1. Match the source. Confirm the production output resolution and frame rate first. Configure the encoder to match them; do not upscale a lower-resolution source expecting more detail.
  2. Select the live codec and bitrate. Choose H.264, H.265, or AV1 only if your encoder supports it and verify the corresponding recommendation in YouTube’s current live table. For H.264, the retrieved figures of 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30 are provisional because the official page captures conflict.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. Choose CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Do not set an interval above four seconds.
  4. Set protocol, color, and audio. Use RTMPS, Rec. 709 for SDR, and stereo audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, when those options match the production and encoder.
  5. Run a representative test. Include the kind of camera movement, stage activity, and audio levels expected in the service. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement.
  6. Monitor stream health. Review YouTube’s live status and encoder messages while testing and during the service. Correct recurring warnings before treating the setup as ready for continuous use.

Latency is separate from bitrate

Latency controls how far behind the live event viewers see the stream; it does not replace codec, bitrate, or connection planning. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. It matters less for a service that does not rely on real-time interaction with viewers, so choose based on whether interaction is important and test playback under the conditions your viewers use.

Troubleshoot common stream problems

YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate

Check the encoder’s configured bitrate against the current YouTube table, then measure sustained upload capacity from the streaming location. Reduce resolution or bitrate if necessary, and leave the recommended headroom for congestion and any backup stream.

Viewers see buffering or the stream drops

Check outbound stability, network congestion, and encoder status rather than assuming the resolution alone is at fault. Run another test with representative motion and audio, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. A setting cannot guarantee uninterrupted internet or power.

The picture looks soft or motion breaks up

Confirm that the source resolution and frame rate are what the encoder expects, then test the bitrate recommended for that codec and format. If the network is marginal, compare 720p30 with 1080p30 for the balance of image detail and stability that suits the service.

Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync

Check the selected audio input, channel layout, sample rate, and encoder meters. Compare against YouTube’s listed stereo 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz settings, then test speech and music in the same production chain used for the service.

Encoder or platform rejects the configuration

Verify codec support in the specific encoder, the selected ingest protocol, and YouTube’s current live settings guidance. If a configuration was copied from a prerecorded upload profile, replace it with live-ingest settings; upload recommendations are not a substitute.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church’s goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating an encoder at the church. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay powered on at home or at the church. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
