The best live-stream encoding settings depend on where you are streaming and what your connection and computer can sustain. For YouTube, a practical 1080p60 H.264 starting point is 12 Mbps; for Twitch, its 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. Both platforms recommend constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval in the guidance cited here, but their bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable. Start with the destination’s current requirements, leave upload headroom, and test your actual setup before going live.
Recommended starting settings for YouTube and Twitch
Use the platform’s own ingestion guidance rather than assuming one preset works everywhere. The figures below are platform recommendations or examples, not guarantees of quality on every connection or encoder.
| Platform and format | Video bitrate | Rate control | Frame rate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | CBR | Up to 60 fps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | CBR | Up to 60 fps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| YouTube Live, AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | CBR | Up to 60 fps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| YouTube Live, AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | CBR | Up to 60 fps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Twitch, 1080p60 | 6,000 kbps | CBR | 60 or 50 fps | 2 seconds |
| Twitch, 1080p30 | 4,500 kbps | CBR | Not separately specified in the cited example | 2 seconds |
| Twitch, 720p60 | 4,500 kbps | CBR | 60 or 50 fps | 2 seconds |
| Twitch, 720p30 | 3,000 kbps | CBR | Not separately specified in the cited example | 2 seconds |
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Its full bitrate table has other recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, so match the row to the format you actually send: YouTube Live encoder settings. Twitch’s cited examples are H.264-oriented; its settings are documented separately in the Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines.
The difference is significant: the cited YouTube H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps, while Twitch’s 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. Do not copy a bitrate from one platform to another without checking its current ingest requirements.

How to choose a stable resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
1. Check upload capacity and leave headroom
Measure outbound upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. If you send a primary and backup stream simultaneously, count both toward that total. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; shared or fluctuating connections can still cause dropped frames or disconnects. See YouTube’s connection and encoder recommendations.
2. Pick a target your connection and system can hold
Higher resolution generally needs more bitrate, while a higher frame rate increases encoding work. If the network cannot sustain the selected bitrate or the computer cannot encode reliably, step down the resolution or frame rate instead of forcing a higher-quality target. Twitch’s guidance explicitly prioritizes a stable stream over pushing quality until frames drop or the connection is strained.

3. Match the ingest codec and platform
Set the codec to one accepted by the destination. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Twitch’s examples cited here focus on H.264. Codec support and requirements vary by service and may change, so confirm the destination’s current documentation before using a preset elsewhere.
Choose an encoder that your computer can sustain
Software encoding with x264 uses the CPU; Twitch notes that this can be demanding. GPU encoding such as NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder, which may be preferable when CPU capacity is the constraint, but the better choice depends on the specific machine and workload. If using x264, Twitch suggests beginning with the veryfast preset and adjusting to what the system can handle. This is a starting point, not a universal performance guarantee. See the Twitch guidance on encoding options.

Apply and test the settings before the stream
- Set the destination first. In your streaming software, choose YouTube or Twitch as the service and configure the appropriate stream key through that platform’s live setup. Do not reuse a platform’s bitrate guidance as if it were universal.
- Set the video format. Choose the target resolution, frame rate, and a codec supported by the destination. For the starting points above, select CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Set the bitrate. Enter the bitrate for the matching platform, codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendation. For YouTube formats beyond the listed 1080p examples, use the corresponding row in its current encoder table.
- Check upload margin. Ensure the available outbound capacity has at least YouTube’s recommended 20% room above the total bitrate, counting backup streams if active.
- Run a representative test. Use audio and movement similar to the planned content. Check the platform preview, stream-health indicators, and any warning messages before relying on the setup for an event. YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring health: YouTube Live troubleshooting and encoder guidance.
Troubleshooting common encoding problems
- Dropped frames or unstable stream: the upload connection may be constrained or fluctuating, or the stream may be too demanding. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again; avoid using all measured upload capacity.
- Encoder overload or choppy motion: the CPU or GPU may not sustain the selected encoding workload. Lower resolution or frame rate, or try the alternate encoder available on your system, then repeat a representative test.
- Platform warnings or failure to ingest: confirm the destination, stream key, supported codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval against that platform’s current instructions. A Twitch preset is not a substitute for YouTube’s ingest settings, or vice versa.
- Good speed-test result but stream drops: the test may not reflect sustained outbound performance during the broadcast. Account for other users or applications sharing the connection and leave the recommended margin rather than targeting its peak result.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a camera or live encoder, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
