The best bathroom vanity lighting puts soft, even illumination on your face without glare. In most bathrooms, that means two diffused sconces or vertical LED bars mounted on both sides of the mirror at about eye level. If side-wall space is unavailable, choose a wide, diffused LED bar above the mirror. Look for CRI 90 or higher, a 2700–3000K color temperature for warm-natural skin rendering, compatible dimming, and a location rating that matches the bathroom zone.
Which vanity-light layout gives the most flattering light?
Placement affects facial shadows more than decorative style. A single ceiling fixture or a small lamp above the mirror can leave dark areas under the eyes, nose and chin. Light arriving from both sides fills those shadows and makes shaving, skincare and makeup application easier.
Two sconces or vertical LED bars beside the mirror
This is the preferred arrangement when wall space permits. Use diffused fixtures on both sides, with their light centers approximately 60–70 inches above the floor and about 28–30 inches apart as starting ranges. Adjust for the mirror, ceiling, fixture optics and the height of the people using the room. Vertical bars can provide an especially continuous wash of light; decorative sconces offer more visible style.
One linear bar above the mirror
An above-mirror bar is the practical fallback for narrow walls or medicine cabinets. Select a long, diffused fixture that spreads light across the face rather than creating a bright point source. A common sizing rule is roughly one-third of the mirror width, while keeping the fixture no wider than the mirror or vanity cabinet. Mounting around 75–80 inches from the floor is a starting range, not a universal requirement.

An integrated lighted mirror

Confirm that the mirror’s electrical connection, depth and controls work with the existing wall box and circuit.
What specifications matter when choosing a vanity light?
| Specification | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CRI | 90 or higher | Improves the accuracy of skin, hair, clothing and makeup colors. |
| Color temperature | 2700–3000K for warm-natural light; about 3000–3500K for detail grooming and outdoor color matching | Changes both the room’s mood and how colors appear. |
| Diffusion | Frosted or opal diffuser with broad output | Reduces glare and hard facial shadows. |
| Dimming | A fixture and LED driver explicitly compatible with your dimmer | Lets you use brighter task light and gentler nighttime light. |
| Location rating | Damp-rated for typical vanity areas; wet-rated where required in shower or tub locations | Protects against moisture and supports code-compliant installation. |
| Finish | Chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, brass or another finish coordinated with hardware | Creates a deliberate relationship with faucets, cabinets and accessories. |
What color temperature is best?
For most residential vanities, 2700–3000K is the flattering warm-neutral range. It keeps skin from looking stark while remaining clear enough for daily grooming. If makeup must match colors seen outdoors, or the vanity is used for detailed grooming, consider approximately 3000–3500K. Tunable fixtures are useful when you want a warmer evening setting and a more neutral grooming setting from the same installation.
Do not judge color temperature in isolation. A high-CCT lamp with poor color rendering can make makeup and clothing less trustworthy than a lower-CCT lamp with CRI 90 or higher.

How bright should a bathroom vanity be?
There is no single authoritative residential lumen number that fits every mirror, ceiling, wall finish and user. Compare delivered lumens, diffuser performance and beam spread when a manufacturer publishes them, then use a compatible dimmer to accommodate daylight and nighttime conditions.

Accent and nighttime layer
Optional under-vanity or low-level accent lighting can provide orientation at night without forcing full task brightness. Dimming or multilevel controls make these layers more practical.
How high and how far apart should sconces be mounted?
Start with the fixture’s light center around 60–70 inches above the finished floor and approximately 28–30 inches between opposing fixtures, then center the pair on the mirror and vanity. A tall mirror, vessel sink, high backsplash or unusually tall users may require a different height. The goal is balanced vertical illumination, not adherence to a number that places the light in the wrong optical position.

Before drilling, mark the mirror edges, cabinet edges and the fixture’s actual mounting plate. Check that doors open, the mirror remains centered and the electrical boxes land behind the fixture rather than in a visible gap.
How to size an above-mirror bar
- Measure the mirror width and the vanity cabinet width.
- Use a bar approximately one-third of the mirror width as an initial proportion.
- Reject any fixture wider than the mirror or cabinet unless the room’s design deliberately calls for a different composition.
- Check the diffuser’s projected light and the bar’s depth against medicine-cabinet doors and the user’s sightline.
A visually narrow bar can still perform well if its diffuser distributes light broadly; a wide fixture with a concentrated, exposed source can produce more glare.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do bathroom vanity lights need to be damp rated?
Usually, a fixture in the open vanity area should be listed for damp locations. Fixtures inside or immediately subject to shower or tub spray may require a wet-location listing, depending on the installation zone and applicable local code. Product labeling and the electrical rules for your jurisdiction take precedence over a general shopping description.

For new wiring, relocation of an electrical box or any uncertainty around shower and tub boundaries, use a qualified electrician. Turn off power at the breaker and follow the fixture manufacturer’s installation instructions; do not rely on the word “bathroom” in a product title as a safety rating.
Style and finish choices that stay cohesive
Coordinate the vanity light with the faucet and cabinet hardware for an easy, unified result. Chrome and brushed nickel suit cool, crisp palettes; matte black adds contrast; brass or gold warms wood, stone and painted cabinetry. Mixed metals can work when one finish is clearly dominant and the secondary finish repeats elsewhere. Diffuser shape, arm geometry and the visible backplate often matter as much as the finish.
A practical shopping checklist
- Choose side sconces or vertical bars first; use an above-mirror bar when side space is unavailable.
- Verify CRI 90 or higher.
- Select 2700–3000K for warm-natural light or approximately 3000–3500K for more neutral grooming.
- Require a diffuser and broad beam spread.
- Compare delivered lumens rather than relying on a universal lumen claim.
- Confirm dimmer compatibility and whether color temperature is fixed or tunable.
- Measure the mirror, cabinet and available wall space before ordering.
- Check the exact damp or wet location listing and local electrical requirements.
- Coordinate the finish with existing hardware, or repeat an intentional mixed-metal scheme.
Bottom line
For the most even, flattering bathroom light, install two diffused, high-CRI fixtures on opposite sides of the mirror at approximately eye level. Choose 2700–3000K for a warm-natural appearance, move toward 3000–3500K when color matching and detailed grooming take priority, and put the circuit on a compatible dimmer. When side mounting is impossible, a properly sized diffused bar above the mirror or a high-CRI lighted mirror is the next-best solution. Always match the fixture’s moisture rating and installation to local code.
