Use headphones, keep VALORANT on Stereo unless a correctly installed Windows or headset spatial-audio system is active, and choose HRTF only if it gives you a clearer front/back image. Hush’s Displacement, Flashbulb, Flow and Suspension reward accurate direction finding more than simply increasing volume. Build your response around the first left/right or front/back cue, then confirm it with line of sight, movement, the minimap and teammate information.

What Hush’s kit asks you to hear

Hush is VALORANT’s ninth Duelist and is scheduled for release on October 27, 2026, according to Dot Esports’ 2026 reporting. Her kit creates four situations in which localization matters:

Displacement (E)

Displacement is a redirectable projectile that pulls players and can concuss them when it collides. The important audio task is identifying the projectile’s direction early enough to move out of its path or prepare for the pull. A louder signal is not a substitute for knowing whether it is coming from your left, right, front or back.

Flashbulb (Q)

Flashbulb is a redirectable flash. If you are looking toward it when it activates, the ability punishes you, so the useful response is to turn away, break line of sight or move behind cover as soon as the cue and visual information indicate its approach.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Flow (C)

Flow is an anchor-based dash. Hearing or seeing the setup gives you a short warning that Hush can enter rapidly along a particular route. Keep your crosshair and body position ready for the entry rather than chasing the sound with uncontrolled movement.

Suspension (X)

Suspension is a steerable projectile that levitates players in an area and can affect multiple players. Directional clarity helps you locate the projectile and decide whether to leave the affected area, take cover or warn teammates before the lift catches them.

Telekinesis (passive)

Telekinesis lets Hush interact at long range with dropped weapons, the Spike and switches. It is not one of the four direct crowd-control threats above, but it can change what is safe to leave on the ground. Treat unusual object interactions as context for Hush’s position rather than as a reason to raise your master volume.

The best audio choice for most players

Start with a wired or wireless headset that produces distinct left and right channels. Riot’s guidance states that HRTF and third-party spatial audio are designed for headphones, not speakers. Speakers can still produce game audio, but they are the wrong baseline for the headphone-focused spatial options described here.

For a stable setup, open VALORANT’s audio settings and set Speaker Configuration to Stereo. Stereo avoids accidental double processing and is the fallback when Windows spatial audio or a headset’s processing layer is not configured correctly.

Use Auto-Detect only when Windows Spatial Audio or a manufacturer spatialization solution is enabled and the headset drivers are installed. Riot added support for third-party spatialization software for headphones in Patch 8.0, published January 9, 2024. Auto-Detect allows that working spatial-audio stack to process the game signal; it is not a universal “more directional” switch.

HRTF remains available. Riot says that localization depends on how well an HRTF profile matches the listener and that no particular HRTF solution is a guaranteed competitive advantage. Keep HRTF if voices and ability cues form a stable, natural front/back image for you. If sounds feel inside your head, front and back are regularly confused, or listening becomes tiring, compare it directly with Stereo at the same volume.

Stereo, HRTF and third-party spatial audio compared

Option Directional behavior Reliability requirements Best use Main risk
Stereo Clear left/right separation; front/back depends on the game mix and your headphones. No external spatial layer is required. A straightforward, repeatable setup or a fallback when spatial processing is uncertain. Less convincing front/back placement for some listeners.
HRTF Can improve front/back and elevation perception when the profile fits your hearing. Headphones; personal fit and comfort matter. Players who prefer its naturalness and can consistently identify approach direction. Some listeners find the image unnatural, fatiguing or less clear.
Third-party spatial audio Uses Windows Spatial Audio or a manufacturer solution to create a headphone spatial field. Headphones, enabled spatial processing and correctly installed manufacturer drivers. Players with a known-good Windows or headset spatial-audio stack. Double processing, distortion or missing channels if the stack is misconfigured.

Do not stack multiple spatializers. If your headset software virtualizes surround, Windows also applies spatial audio, and VALORANT is set to a mode that adds another layer, the result can be smeared positioning rather than better localization. Compare one processing path at a time.

Configure VALORANT for Hush cues

  1. Put on headphones and center the fit. Wear the left and right earpieces on the correct ears and keep the fit consistent between sessions. A shifted headset changes the balance you use to judge direction.
  2. Open the game audio controls. In VALORANT, open Settings, choose Audio, and locate Speaker Configuration.
  3. Select Stereo for the dependable baseline. Choose Stereo when you are not deliberately using a functioning Windows or manufacturer spatial-audio system.
  4. Select Auto-Detect only for a supported spatial stack. Enable your chosen Windows Spatial Audio or headset spatialization solution first, confirm that its driver is installed, then select Auto-Detect in VALORANT. If the result has missing center or surround information, return to Stereo and troubleshoot the driver path.
  5. Test HRTF rather than assuming it wins. Toggle HRTF on and off using the same headphones and a similar volume. Keep the setting that gives you the most dependable front/back judgment and remains comfortable over a full match.
  6. Protect the effects channel. Keep effects and voice communication audible. Lower music and other masking sounds first. Riot has not published a Hush-specific numeric mixer preset, so these are listening priorities, not measured requirements.
  7. Set a safe listening level. Raise volume only until ordinary footsteps, ability cues and teammate calls are intelligible. Excessive loudness does not reveal an ability’s range or make a concealed direction precise, and it can make fatigue arrive sooner.

Check that your channels are actually working

USB headsets that advertise virtual 7.1 commonly rely on a manufacturer driver or control application. Riot warns that, without the correct driver mix, center or surround sounds can be silent. Silence in one channel can make a Hush projectile appear to come from the wrong place even when your in-game setting is correct.

  2. Disable extra processing temporarily and compare the result with VALORANT set to Stereo.
  3. If you use a USB headset, install or repair the driver supplied for that model, then restart the headset software and the game.
  4. Recheck Windows’ selected output device. A monitor, controller or Bluetooth hands-free profile can silently become the active output.
  5. With the same output device selected everywhere, compare Stereo, HRTF and Auto-Detect one at a time. Do not change volume while judging direction.

Build a reaction sequence instead of chasing volume

Use a consistent three-part sequence whenever you hear a Hush cue:

  1. Localize: turn your crosshair toward the first credible left/right or front/back cue.
  2. Verify: use line of sight, movement, the minimap and teammate information to confirm whether the sound is an incoming projectile, a dash route or a nearby player.
  3. Disengage or punish: move out of the projected area, turn away from a flash, take cover, or hold the likely entry angle. Do not keep rotating after you have enough information to act.

The first cue is valuable because each of Hush’s major threats has a different follow-up consequence. Localization buys you the decision; movement and cover keep you from taking the effect.

Ability-by-ability response guide

When Displacement is coming

  • Use the first directional cue to identify the projectile’s side and likely line.
  • Move laterally or behind cover rather than backing up in a straight line that leaves you in its path.
  • Assume a collision can pull and concuss you; do not treat a near miss as harmless if the projectile is still on course.
  • If you cannot establish the direction, prioritize solid cover and a teammate call over a risky peek.

When Flashbulb is threatened

  • Turn away or break line of sight as soon as the cue and visual information indicate the flash’s location.
  • Do not stare at the source while trying to identify it more precisely. The ability specifically punishes players looking at it.
  • After avoiding the flash, expect Hush to use the moment for an entry; keep your crosshair on the most likely follow-up angle.

When Flow creates an entry

  • Read the anchor and the sound as a route warning, not as proof of Hush’s final position.
  • Hold an angle that covers the likely arrival point while leaving yourself a retreat path.
  • Share the route with teammates so one player does not over-rotate and open a second lane.

When Suspension is fired

  • Find the steerable projectile’s direction immediately and leave the affected area if you can.
  • Warn teammates before the area catches multiple players; clustered allies are a larger target than a single isolated player.
  • If movement is already restricted, use cover and prepare for the moment the lift ends instead of fighting the effect with random strafing.

When Telekinesis changes an objective area

  • Re-evaluate dropped weapons, the Spike and nearby switches as possible long-range interaction points.
  • Use the interaction as positional information, then confirm Hush’s location with sight, the minimap or a teammate call.
  • Do not turn an uncertain object sound into a blind swing; the passive is context, not a guaranteed attack direction.

Why ability-equipping audio is not a dependable warning

Patch 7.08, published October 17, 2023, removed ability-equipping sounds from ally audibility: “Ability equipping sounds are no longer audible to your Allies.” That change means you should not rely on hearing a teammate or an enemy ally equip an ability as an early warning signal for Hush. Learn the actual emitted ability cues, then corroborate them with visual information, minimap state and teammate communication.

This distinction matters in coordinated play. A teammate may report that Hush is preparing pressure, but the absence of an equipping sound does not prove that no ability is imminent. Conversely, an ambiguous noise should not trigger a full rotation without a second source of information.

Troubleshoot the most common localization failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Everything sounds wide or echoing. Two or more spatial-processing layers are active. Disable extra Windows or headset virtualization and retest with VALORANT Stereo. Add one spatial layer only if you can verify it improves direction.
Center cues disappear or voices sound hollow. USB virtual 7.1 driver or channel mix is missing. Install the headset’s manufacturer driver and verify the correct output device; use Stereo while repairing it.
Front and back are regularly confused. HRTF profile does not fit your hearing, the headset fit changes, or the spatial layer is distorting. Compare HRTF with Stereo at equal volume, reseat the headset, and test Auto-Detect only with a known-good driver stack.
Directional cues vanish during fights. Music or other sounds mask effects and voice communication. Lower masking channels first and keep effects and team communication intelligible.
A cue seems late or inconsistent. Bluetooth mode, an incorrect Windows output, or competing headset software may be altering the path. Confirm the active output device, avoid hands-free profiles, and compare a direct Stereo path before re-enabling processing.
You hear an ally equip an ability and expect a warning, but nothing follows. Equipping sounds are not a reliable ally-audible signal after Patch 7.08. Use emitted ability cues plus visual, minimap and teammate information.

How to choose between settings after testing

Choose Stereo when reliability is the priority

Stereo is the right answer if you want the fewest dependencies, are unsure whether Windows spatial audio is active, or notice that virtualization produces missing channels. It provides a stable baseline against which every other option can be judged.

Choose HRTF when it improves your own front/back decisions

HRTF is worthwhile when you can repeatedly distinguish a sound behind you from one in front of you without fatigue. Riot’s explanation makes the limitation explicit: anatomical differences and profile fit affect naturalness, so another player’s preference is not evidence that HRTF will help you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Auto-Detect when the entire spatial stack is verified

Auto-Detect makes sense only after Windows or the headset’s spatialization is enabled, the required driver is installed and a channel test passes. If you cannot identify which component is processing the signal, use Stereo until you can.

A short practice routine for Hush’s release

  1. Use one headset and one volume level for the entire session.
  2. Test Stereo first, then HRTF, then Auto-Detect only if you have a supported spatial-audio stack.
  3. For each setting, have a teammate or controlled session generate cues from the left, right, front and rear when possible.
  4. Call the direction before looking toward the source. This tests localization rather than visual confirmation.
  5. Repeat while moving, then repeat with music reduced and voice communication audible.
  6. Keep the setting that gives you the most consistent calls with the least fatigue, not the one that sounds the widest.

There are no authoritative Hush-specific figures for audio range, loudness or reaction time in the available reporting. Do not build a timing rule around an estimated number. Use the release version’s actual emitted cues and adjust your response as Riot changes the game.

What to remember in a match

  • Headphones are the intended medium for HRTF and third-party spatial audio.
  • Use Stereo for a simple, dependable configuration.
  • Use Auto-Detect only with functioning Windows or headset spatial audio and the correct drivers.
  • HRTF is a personal clarity and comfort choice, not a guaranteed advantage.
  • Protect effects and voice communication from masking sounds; louder is not automatically better.
  • React to Displacement, Flashbulb, Flow and Suspension by localizing first, then using cover, movement and line of sight.
  • Do not treat ability-equipping sounds as a reliable ally warning after Patch 7.08.
