Use Filmmaker Mode, Warm 1, Gamma 2.4, Enhanced Black Level Low, and Brightness Enhancer Off for the most accurate movie picture. In a brighter room, change Gamma to 2.2 and raise laser luminance only as far as needed. For sports, start with Sports mode and moderate motion processing. For gaming, use PC/Game for SDR or HDR Game for HDR through an external HDMI source, enable Enhanced Format and Instant Game Response, and select the fastest stable refresh rate.
The VisionMaster Max stores separate memories for SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, so calibrate each format rather than assuming one set of numbers carries over. The values below are starting points; screen gain, room reflections, throw distance, firmware, and source processing can require adjustment.
Quick-start settings by use
These baselines prioritize the trade-offs that matter most for each type of content. Apply them to the matching source and format memory, then fine-tune with test material.
| Use | Picture mode | Color temperature | Gamma | Enhanced Black Level | Brightness Enhancer | Motion processing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movies in a dark room | Filmmaker Mode | Warm 1 | 2.4 | Low | Off | Off |
| Movies with some room light | Filmmaker Mode or Theater | Warm 1 | 2.2 | Low | Off | Off or the lowest setting you can tolerate |
| HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, or IMAX Enhanced movies | Filmmaker Mode; Theater if unavailable | Warm 1 | Start at the format’s default, then adjust only if needed | Low | Off | Off for a film-accurate 24p presentation |
| Sports in a bright room | Sports | Use the neutral or warm option you prefer | Adjust for visibility, not a fixed universal number | Low | Usually Off when color accuracy matters | Modest setting only if pans look blurry |
| SDR gaming | PC/Game | Neutral or Warm 1 after checking shadow detail | Use the setting that preserves dark detail in your game | Low or Off if scene transitions show tint shifts | Off for consistent color | All unnecessary processing Off |
| HDR gaming | HDR Game | Use the mode default unless you are calibrating with a meter | Use the console or PC HDR calibration pattern | Low, then disable if artifacts appear | Off unless brightness is more important than color accuracy | All unnecessary processing Off |
Laser luminance is the room-and-screen control. A madVR Labs baseline starts around level 10; reduce it in a dark room or increase it for ambient light and a larger screen. Do not treat level 10 as a universal brightness target.

How the VisionMaster Max applies picture settings
The projector does not use one global set of controls. ProjectorCentral reports separate memories for SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. A change made while an SDR movie is playing may not affect HDR10 or Dolby Vision playback. Select the actual format you intend to watch, open the picture menu, and save the adjustment in that format’s memory.
Source type also changes the available modes. PC/Game and HDR Game are intended for an external HDMI source such as a console, gaming PC, or streaming device. ProjectorCentral notes that these gaming modes are not selectable inside the built-in Google TV platform. If a game app runs directly on Google TV, you may have to use the platform’s available picture mode rather than the dedicated low-latency memory.
Valerion provides dedicated memories for movies, sports, games, and animation. That makes mode selection a useful first step, but a mode is not a calibration. Room brightness, screen material, wall color, and source output determine whether a nominally correct value looks correct from your seat.

Best movie settings in a dark or controlled room
1. Select Filmmaker Mode
Choose Picture Mode > Filmmaker Mode for SDR films and for HDR content when the option is available. Valerion’s guidance is to use Filmmaker Mode or Theater with Warm 1 for movies and HDR. Filmmaker Mode is the better starting point when you want the director’s intended cadence and color rather than extra showroom brightness.
Use Theater instead when you prefer its presentation or when the source does not expose Filmmaker Mode. Switching between these modes can change several processing choices at once, so make your comparison with the same scene and source output.
2. Set Warm 1
Set Color Temperature > Warm 1. ProjectorCentral also found Warm 1 to be the strongest starting point. Cooler presets can make whites appear brighter at a glance, but they move the image away from a neutral movie white balance.
3. Choose Gamma 2.4 for cinema darkness
Use Gamma 2.4 when the room is dark and its walls and ceiling are not washing the image with reflected light. The higher curve gives shadows more depth and is the baseline used in the madVR Labs setup guide. If the same setting hides shadow detail after you turn on lights or watch in a brighter living room, use Gamma 2.2 instead.

Raising laser luminance to compensate for a room that is too bright can preserve highlight output while leaving the tonal shape intact; changing to 2.2 lifts more of the midtones and shadows. Pick the gamma that lets you see intended dark detail without making black bars look gray.

4. Start with Enhanced Black Level Low
Set Enhanced Black Level (EBL) > Low first. ProjectorCentral found Low less distracting than High. EBL needs laser luminance level 6 or higher, so it may be unavailable or ineffective at very low laser settings.
High reacts more aggressively, but ProjectorCentral observed stronger color shifts and more highlight clipping. If a fade or scene cut changes tint, or bright details lose texture, return to Low. Disable EBL entirely when even Low produces distracting transitions. The small increase in perceived black depth is not worth visible pumping or color instability.
5. Set laser luminance for the room and screen
A practical starting point is Laser Luminance level 10, the value used in the madVR baseline. In a fully dark room with a modest screen, lower it until white subtitles and faces no longer look harsh. For ambient light, a larger image, or a screen that absorbs more light, raise it only enough to maintain contrast.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The projector is rated at 3500 ISO lumens on Valerion’s 2026 product page. That published figure is a capability rating, not a guarantee that every picture mode, color temperature, or processing combination will deliver the same output at the screen. Brightness Enhancer can approach the rated lumen output, but its color penalty makes it unsuitable for reference movie viewing.
6. Set Contrast and Black Level with a pattern
Begin with Contrast between 40 and 50 and keep Black Level at 0. Then display a white-clipping test pattern. Increase Contrast until the brightest flashing bars merge, then back it down until the highest intended bars are distinct. The correct value depends on the source range and HDMI output, so a test pattern is more reliable than copying a number.
If near-black bars disappear, do not solve the problem by raising Black Level immediately. First check the source’s RGB range, HDR output, and gamma. A mismatched limited/full range can make the entire image look crushed or washed out.
7. Turn off color and motion shortcuts
Set Brightness Enhancer to Off for accurate color. ProjectorCentral observed a strong green bias with it enabled. Leave clarity, edge enhancement, and other artificial detail controls Off or at their lowest useful value.
Set Motion Enhancement/Frame Interpolation to Off for a natural 24-frame-per-second film presentation. If you deliberately prefer smoother motion, use the lowest setting that removes judder without creating obvious halos or the soap-opera effect. Do not use motion interpolation to hide a poorly configured source frame rate.

HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and IMAX Enhanced
The VisionMaster Max supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, IMAX Enhanced, and Filmmaker Mode. Treat each format as its own calibration job:
- Start HDR playback from the device that will normally supply it.
- Open the projector’s picture menu while the HDR format is active.
- Select Filmmaker Mode, or Theater if Filmmaker Mode is not offered.
- Set Warm 1, EBL Low, Brightness Enhancer Off, and motion processing Off.
- Use the source’s HDR clipping or logo test pattern to check Contrast and highlight detail.
- Save the values, stop playback, and repeat for HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and any IMAX Enhanced source you use.
Do not copy an SDR gamma, Contrast, or laser value into HDR and assume the result is equivalent. HDR tone mapping and the projector’s format-specific memory can change the outcome. If Dolby Vision appears dim or tinted while HDR10 looks correct, check that the source is actually outputting Dolby Vision and adjust that memory rather than changing SDR.
Best settings for sports in a bright room
Start with Sports mode
Select Picture Mode > Sports. Valerion provides a dedicated Sports mode because a live game has different priorities from a film: readable jerseys and score graphics, stable visibility during camera pans, and enough output to resist room light.
Raise laser luminance only until the field, ice, or court remains clear with the room lights on. Excess output can make white uniforms and advertising boards clip while doing little to improve dark detail. Keep Brightness Enhancer Off when color accuracy matters; its green bias is especially obvious on grass, skin tones, and white uniforms.
Choose motion processing deliberately
Leave Motion Enhancement Off if you want the original broadcast cadence. If a fast pan or ball causes visible blur, try a modest motion setting and inspect a moving player against a high-contrast background. Stop at the lowest level that helps. Higher levels can create halos, double edges, and the soap-opera appearance even when the image looks sharper at first.
Use the right screen for the room
Valerion says a matte-white screen works well in a light-controlled space. When ambient light is unavoidable, an ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen can preserve more contrast by directing projector light toward viewers and rejecting some off-axis room light. ALR screens are not automatically better: viewing angle, projector placement, screen texture, and hotspotting can affect uniformity. Choose the screen after deciding where the projector and primary seats will be installed.
Best gaming settings and input-lag targets
Select the low-latency memory
For an external HDMI source, use PC/Game for SDR or HDR Game for HDR. These modes remove or reduce processing that adds delay. ProjectorCentral measured:
| Signal | Measured input lag | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 4K at 60 Hz | 18 ms | Suitable for most console and general gaming, with full 4K resolution. |
| 4K at 120 Hz | 11 ms | Lower latency and smoother motion when the console or PC can sustain 120 Hz. |
| 1080p at 240 Hz | 5 ms | The fastest measured path, trading away 4K detail for high-refresh competitive play. |
These are ProjectorCentral measurements from its review, not a guarantee for every firmware version, cable, source, or processing combination. Select the highest stable mode your hardware can maintain; an unstable 4K/120 signal is worse than a reliable 4K/60 connection.

Configure HDMI correctly
- Connect the console or PC directly to the projector or to an HDMI 2.1 receiver that passes the required signal.
- Open the input’s HDMI setting and choose Enhanced Format.
- Use a certified 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 cable for high-bit-depth 4K signals.
- Enable the projector’s Instant Game Response or equivalent high-refresh option.
- Set the source to 4K/60, 4K/120, or 1080p/240, then verify that the projector reports the intended resolution and refresh rate.
- In PC/Game or HDR Game, turn off frame interpolation, noise reduction, dynamic sharpening, and any enhancement you cannot confirm improves the image without adding delay.
If Enhanced Format is enabled but the image drops out, first replace long or uncertified cables and test a lower bandwidth mode. If the picture remains stable only at 4K/60, keep that reliable mode rather than chasing a nominally faster setting.
Understand the Google TV limitation
The built-in Google TV platform does not expose PC/Game or HDR Game according to ProjectorCentral. For the lowest-latency modes, use a console, PC, or external streamer connected through HDMI. Apps running directly on Google TV may have fewer selectable picture controls and a different latency path.
EBL versus Brightness Enhancer: which should you use?
| Control | Primary benefit | Main risk | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EBL Low | Improves perceived black depth with relatively restrained behavior | Possible tint changes during transitions; requires laser level 6 or higher | Default for movies and HDR; test with fades and mixed bright/dark scenes |
| EBL High | More aggressive black-level reaction | Stronger color shifts and highlight clipping observed by ProjectorCentral | Only if you accept those artifacts after direct testing |
| Brightness Enhancer | Higher light output, potentially approaching the rated lumen figure | Strong green bias observed by ProjectorCentral | Use only when raw brightness outweighs color accuracy, not for reference viewing |
| Both disabled | Most predictable color and scene transitions | Less perceived contrast or peak brightness | Best troubleshooting baseline when tint or pumping appears |
For a movie setup, EBL Low and Brightness Enhancer Off is the sensible first test. For a bright sports room, keep EBL Low if transitions remain clean and raise laser luminance before considering Brightness Enhancer. For competitive gaming, disable either feature if its dynamic behavior distracts you or changes visibility between scenes.

Placement, lens shift, and screen size
Optical placement preserves more image quality than digital keystone correction. Valerion specifies a 0.9–1.5:1 throw ratio, support for images up to 300 inches, and ±105% vertical lens shift. Use the projector’s optical zoom and vertical lens shift to fit the image to the screen, keeping the chassis square to the screen whenever possible.
- Measure the screen diagonal and consult the 0.9–1.5:1 throw range to choose a viable mounting distance.
- Center the projector horizontally on the screen when your room allows.
- Use optical zoom for size and vertical lens shift for height.
- Square the image physically before touching keystone.
- Use keystone only as a last resort; it remaps pixels and can reduce detail, especially on text and game interfaces.
A large screen and a high-gain or ALR surface can change the laser level required for a comfortable image. A dark wall, ceiling reflections, or side lighting can reduce perceived contrast even when the projector’s menu values are unchanged.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
Valerion’s 2026 product information lists 3500 ISO lumens, claimed 110% Rec.2020 coverage, a laser light source rated for up to 25,000 hours, a 0.9–1.5:1 throw ratio, ±105% vertical lens shift, and image sizes up to 300 inches. ProjectorCentral measured 94.32% xy and 96.66% uv coverage of BT.2020 in its evaluation, rather than the full claimed figure. The different numbers describe a manufacturer claim and an independent measurement using different methods; neither should be treated as a promise of identical color volume in every mode.
Laser life is a rating of the light source, not a guarantee that brightness or color will remain unchanged for 25,000 hours. Keep ventilation clear, avoid unnecessary maximum output, and judge replacement timing by measured or visibly reduced brightness rather than the hour figure alone.

- Set the room lighting to the level used during viewing.
- Adjust laser luminance before changing gamma.
- Use black-level and shadow-detail patterns to check near-black visibility.
- Use white-clipping and HDR highlight patterns to set Contrast.
- Check skin tones, neutral grays, grass, and white subtitles after enabling EBL.
- Save a separate memory for each source and HDR format.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Green cast after enabling a brightness feature
Turn Brightness Enhancer Off and compare the same scene. ProjectorCentral observed a strong green bias with it enabled. If the tint remains, verify that the source has not switched color temperature or HDR mode, then reload Warm 1 in the active memory.
Color changes during fades or scene cuts
Change EBL High to Low. If the shift persists, disable EBL and test again at a stable laser level of at least 6. High EBL was associated with stronger color shifts and highlight clipping in ProjectorCentral’s testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMovie motion looks like live television
Set Motion Enhancement or Frame Interpolation Off. Confirm the source is outputting 24p for film content. Use a low motion setting only when you intentionally prefer smoothing.
Dark scenes look crushed
Check Gamma first: use 2.2 if the room is brighter or if 2.4 hides intended shadow detail. Confirm the source’s RGB range and HDR output, keep Black Level at 0 as the starting point, and use a near-black test pattern before raising any black control.
HDR highlights clip
Check Contrast with an HDR clipping pattern and reduce it until the intended highlight steps are visible. If EBL High is enabled, switch to Low or Off because ProjectorCentral observed more highlight clipping with the High setting.
The projector will not show 4K/120 or 1080p/240
Set the HDMI input to Enhanced Format, use a certified 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 cable, and confirm that the source, receiver, and cable path all support the selected mode. Test a direct connection and a lower refresh rate to isolate the failing link.
Gaming feels delayed
Use an external HDMI source in PC/Game or HDR Game, enable Instant Game Response, and disable motion and enhancement processing. Built-in Google TV apps do not expose these dedicated gaming modes. Verify the reported refresh rate rather than assuming the source negotiated the fastest setting.
A practical order for saving your final memories
- Install and align the projector optically; avoid keystone.
- Choose the screen and room-light condition you will actually use.
- Select the source and format memory: SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or IMAX Enhanced.
- Choose the content mode: Filmmaker/Theater for movies, Sports for live events, PC/Game or HDR Game for HDMI gaming.
- Set Warm 1 for movie memories, then choose gamma based on room brightness.
- Set laser luminance for comfortable peak white, leaving Brightness Enhancer Off initially.
- Set EBL Low and test fades, subtitles, and mixed-contrast scenes.
- Use black-level and white-clipping patterns to confirm Black Level 0 and Contrast around 40–50, changing Contrast only as the pattern requires.
- Disable unnecessary clarity and motion processing.
- Save the memory, then repeat the process for every format you watch.
This order prevents a screen, source-range, or placement problem from being hidden by a picture-mode change. It also leaves you with predictable memories: accurate and calm for films, bright enough for sports, and low-latency for games.
