An old Android phone can serve as a small home-network project: use it to learn Linux commands, run a lightweight test service, or synchronize selected files between devices. It is not a dependable replacement for a NAS or an always-on production server. Android can restrict background apps, phone hardware and storage are limited, and an aging handset’s condition is uncertain.
What an old Android phone can realistically do
For modest jobs, an Android phone can provide a Linux-like command-line environment and run scripts or lightweight services through Termux. The best fit is a task that is useful when the phone is available but can tolerate interruption: a learning environment, a small personal API or static site on your home network, or a limited file-sync node.
Choose by the consequence of failure, not just by whether an app can be installed. A test endpoint can be restarted if it stops; a sole copy of important files or a critical home service cannot safely depend on an aging phone.

Run lightweight experiments with Termux
Termux provides an Android terminal and Linux environment, making it a practical starting point for shell practice, scripts, and small services. For example, a personal test endpoint or static page on the home network can be a useful learning project. Keep the scope small: this guidance does not establish production suitability, package compatibility for every phone, or continuous availability.

Termux Services provides runit scripts for enabling and starting services. That can help organize how a service is launched, but it does not guarantee that Android or a particular phone vendor will keep it running indefinitely.
Plan for Android background limits and recovery
Android has background-work restrictions and scheduling mechanisms, so a server process may not behave like a service on a conventional Linux host. The Android background execution documentation explains these platform limits. Before relying on a project, decide whether it needs to stay active continuously, what should happen if Android pauses or stops it, and how you will restart it after a phone reboot or interruption.

- For experiments, accept that the service may need manual attention.
- For a service other people or devices depend on, test the behavior on the exact handset and Android version rather than assuming a startup helper guarantees uptime.
- Do not assume root access; app permissions and Android storage boundaries still apply.
Use Syncthing for selected device-to-device files
Syncthing can exchange files directly between devices when they are online together, without uploading those files to a cloud provider. It can suit a modest folder that you want to keep synchronized between a phone and another device.
Synchronization is not the same as backup: a deletion or unwanted change can propagate to other synced copies. Keep a separate, independent copy of anything important. Syncthing’s FAQ also notes that phone CPU can limit performance, particularly during initial hashing and larger scans, so avoid assuming a phone will handle large collections quickly.

Use Nextcloud as a phone client, not an assumed phone-hosted server
The Nextcloud Android app can access files on a Nextcloud server and automatically upload pictures and videos. This is useful as part of a personal file or photo workflow, but the cited documentation covers the Android client; it does not establish an officially supported full Nextcloud server running natively on Android. Do not treat installing the client as a way to turn the phone into that server.
Understand storage and OTG limits
Android separates an app’s private files from shared storage. Termux documents how permission-based access to shared storage works and notes its limitations in the Termux storage guide. A service that needs files outside Termux’s private area therefore needs deliberate permission and path planning.

An OTG adapter and external drive may add capacity if the handset supports the connector and USB OTG. Check both before buying or configuring a drive. Attaching storage does not make Android shared storage behave like an unrestricted Linux filesystem, nor does it provide NAS-grade reliability.

- Android version: Background behavior and app compatibility depend on the software the handset actually runs.
- Free storage: Leave room for the app, its data, and the files or logs the project needs.
- Battery condition: An old battery may be unsuitable for a device expected to remain powered for long periods.
- Network access: Confirm the phone can reach the other devices or home-network clients the project requires.
- Connector and OTG support: Verify these before planning removable storage.
- Recovery plan: Decide how to detect a stopped process, restart it, and preserve data independently.
When a phone is the wrong server
Do not make the phone the only home for irreplaceable files, the sole backup target, or a critical service that must be available continuously. The available documentation describes useful apps and Android behavior, but does not establish reliable uptime, speed, power use, or thermal performance for any particular handset. If downtime or data loss would matter, use hardware and a storage plan designed and tested for that role.
