Short answer: For gaming services that support FIDO2 passkeys, the Yubico Security Key NFC is the straightforward choice, while the YubiKey 5C NFC is better if you also need broader authentication protocols for email, password managers, or enterprise systems. Pick USB-A or USB-C to match your computers and phones, register a second key before you need it, and keep a fallback sign-in method. Steam is the important exception: its documented second factors are Steam Guard email codes and the Steam Mobile Authenticator, not direct USB or NFC-key enrollment.

Quick verdict

Gaming account situation Best fit Why Important limitation
PlayStation passkey with a simple, value-focused key Yubico Security Key NFC FIDO2/passkey support, with USB-A or USB-C variants and NFC Sony warns that some hardware security keys can encounter issues; keep another sign-in route
One key for gaming plus other identity systems YubiKey 5C NFC USB-C, NFC, FIDO2 and additional protocols documented by Yubico Its extra protocols do not add a hardware-key enrollment path to Steam Guard
Steam account protection Steam Guard Steam documents email codes and the Steam Mobile Authenticator Direct FIDO2 USB/NFC-key support is not established in the cited Steam guidance
Everyday key plus disaster recovery Two matching keys A registered spare prevents lockout if the daily key is lost or damaged The spare must be registered before the primary key fails

A security key is only useful when the service actually offers a security-key or passkey registration flow. The connector and NFC features determine how conveniently you can complete that flow; they do not override a platform’s authentication design.

What each gaming platform officially supports

Steam: use Steam Guard, not an assumed YubiKey login

Steam describes Steam Guard as “an additional level of security that can be applied to your Steam account.” When a sign-in comes from an unrecognized device, Steam can send a special code by email or provide approval and codes through the Steam Mobile Authenticator. Steam’s support material also covers reviewing authorized devices and avoiding phishing.

The cited Steam support pages do not document a procedure for enrolling a FIDO2 security key, NFC key, or passkey as a direct replacement for Steam Guard. A YubiKey can still protect the email account, password manager, or other services associated with your Steam identity, but you should not promise yourself a hardware-key login to Steam until Steam publishes an enrollment path in its own account settings and help documentation.

PlayStation: passkeys are supported, with a hardware-key caveat

PlayStation Account Management supports Sign in with Passkey, including creating, managing, and removing passkeys. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the global passkey rollout on February 26, 2024. Sony says passkeys follow FIDO standards; in the announcement, Senior Director of Product Management Ryan King described them as “Strong and phishing-resistant” and said they “adhere to Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards which were established by the FIDO Alliance.”

PlayStation’s support guidance says passkeys work on most devices running iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later. It also warns that some hardware security keys may encounter issues. That warning matters when you use a physical USB or NFC key rather than a passkey stored by a phone, computer, or password manager. Test the exact console-account, browser, and phone combination you use, and retain a fallback method before removing any existing sign-in option.

Other gaming accounts: look for an explicit FIDO2 or passkey control

For another publisher or gaming service, open the account’s security settings and look for labels such as security key, passkey, or FIDO2. A service may support passkeys stored on a phone or computer without accepting an external USB key in every sign-in situation. The service’s own enrollment screen is the authority; the presence of an NFC reader or a FIDO2-certified key does not create compatibility by itself.

Key comparison: Security Key NFC versus YubiKey 5C NFC

Feature Yubico Security Key NFC YubiKey 5C NFC
Primary role Value-oriented FIDO2/passkey security key Multi-purpose key for FIDO2 plus additional protocols
Connector choices USB-A plus NFC or USB-C plus NFC USB-C plus NFC
NFC Yes, on both listed variants Yes
Passkey/FIDO2 use Yes, for services that support it Yes, for services that support it
Additional protocols Not the reason to buy this model; it is positioned as the simpler FIDO2 option Yubico documents additional uses including PIV, OTP, and OpenPGP
Best match PlayStation or other passkey-enabled accounts when you want a focused, lower-complexity key Users who want one USB-C/NFC key across gaming, email, password managers, and legacy identity systems
Steam effect Neither model changes Steam’s documented Steam Guard methods

The two products overlap for FIDO2 authentication. The meaningful buying decisions are connector type, NFC convenience, and whether you have a real need for the 5C NFC’s additional protocols.

Choose the connector you will actually use

USB-A

Choose the USB-A version of the Security Key NFC if your desktop, laptop, or other sign-in computer has traditional rectangular USB-A ports. It avoids adapters and is practical for older computers. USB-A does not determine whether a service supports passkeys; it only determines the physical connection.

USB-C

Choose USB-C for newer laptops, tablets, and phones that expose a USB-C port. The Security Key NFC has a USB-C variant, and the YubiKey 5C NFC uses USB-C. If you expect to move the key between a USB-C phone and a USB-C computer, one USB-C key can be simpler than carrying an adapter.

NFC

NFC lets a compatible phone or reader communicate with the key without inserting it. It is convenient for mobile sign-ins, but it depends on the phone, browser, operating system, and account flow all supporting NFC security-key use. When NFC is unavailable or unreliable, USB is the dependable alternative. Treat NFC as a convenience feature, not as a guarantee that every PlayStation or gaming sign-in will work wirelessly.

How to register a key for a supported account

  1. Confirm support first. In the account’s security settings, verify that the service offers security key, passkey, or FIDO2 enrollment. Do not infer support from the key’s packaging.
  2. Open the security settings. Sign in using your existing method, then choose the service’s option for adding a security key or passkey.
  3. Insert or tap the key. Connect the USB key when prompted, or select the NFC path on a compatible phone or reader.
  4. Complete the user-presence check. Follow the prompt to touch the key or approve the operation. If the service asks for a PIN, create or enter the FIDO2 PIN requested by that service and key.
  5. Name the credential clearly. Use a label such as “daily USB-C key” so you can distinguish it from a backup later.
  6. Register the spare immediately. Repeat the process with the second key while you are still signed in and able to recover from an error.
  7. Test a fresh sign-in. Sign out only after confirming that the key is listed in account security and works in the browser, phone, or console path you actually use.

Yubico’s setup guidance also recommends setting up a spare YubiKey. FIDO2-certified YubiKeys can store passkeys, and Yubico Authenticator can manage passkeys on supported setups. The account remains the source of truth: a passkey shown in an authenticator does not help if it was never registered with that service.

PlayStation setup and verification

  1. Open PlayStation Account Management and choose the security area.
  2. Select Sign in with Passkey, then choose the option to create or add a passkey.
  3. When offered a security-key path, connect the USB key or use NFC according to the device and browser prompt.
  4. Complete the touch, PIN, or approval step requested by the FIDO2 flow.
  5. Check that the new passkey appears in the account’s passkey management list.
  6. Register the spare key before ending the session.
  7. Perform a controlled sign-out and sign-in on the device you intend to use for PlayStation access.

Because Sony specifically notes that some hardware keys may encounter issues, do not remove your previous recovery option until this test succeeds. If the console itself does not expose the expected key prompt, complete account enrollment in a supported browser or phone and then verify how the console handles the resulting passkey.

How to protect Steam correctly

  1. Enable Steam Guard in Steam’s account-security controls.
  2. Choose the documented method that fits you: email codes or the Steam Mobile Authenticator.
  3. Review authorized devices and remove devices you no longer control.
  4. Protect the email account used for Steam with its own strong authentication; a FIDO2 key can be valuable there if that email service supports it.
  5. Use the Steam Mobile Authenticator carefully, keep your recovery information available, and treat unexpected sign-in prompts as possible phishing.

A USB or NFC key can be part of your broader account-security plan, but it should not be described as a direct Steam Guard replacement. The distinction prevents a costly lockout caused by assuming a key will work at the Steam login screen.

When the YubiKey 5C NFC is worth the extra capability

The 5C NFC makes sense when gaming is only one part of your identity setup. Yubico documents FIDO2 alongside protocols such as PIV, OTP, and OpenPGP, which can matter for enterprise certificates, one-time-password workflows, or cryptographic tools. Those capabilities let one USB-C/NFC device serve several unrelated systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your only requirement is a passkey for PlayStation or another FIDO2-enabled service, the Security Key NFC is the less complicated match. Buying the 5C NFC solely because it has more protocols does not improve Steam compatibility or remove PlayStation’s hardware-key caveat.

Backup, recovery, and loss planning

Register two keys

Keep one key with you and store the registered spare in a secure, separate location. Registration must happen while you still have access to the account; buying a second key after losing the first does not automatically restore access.

Keep a fallback sign-in method

For PlayStation, retain the fallback route Sony provides while you verify the hardware key. For Steam, that means maintaining access to the email or mobile-authenticator method used by Steam Guard. A fallback is not a weakness when it is protected and stored deliberately; it is what prevents a lost key from becoming a permanent lockout.

Replace compromised or missing keys

If a key disappears, sign in with your fallback method, remove the missing credential from the account’s security settings, and register a replacement. Do this promptly, especially if the key was stored with identifying information or could be used by someone who knows your account credentials.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • The account does not show a security-key option: The service may support only email, an authenticator app, or platform passkeys. Do not force a USB-key workflow that the account does not offer.
  • USB is not detected: Try the other connector type, remove an adapter or hub, and use a direct port. Confirm that the browser or operating system is the one supported by the account’s sign-in flow.
  • NFC does not appear: Verify that the phone has NFC enabled and that the browser and account flow support an external NFC key. Use USB instead when the wireless prompt is absent.
  • PlayStation enrollment fails: Try the supported browser or phone path, check that the key is recognized there, and retain the fallback method because Sony warns that some hardware keys may have issues.
  • You are locked out after losing the key: Use the account’s documented recovery method, remove the lost credential, and register the spare or replacement. If you never registered a spare or fallback, contact the platform’s official account-recovery support.
  • A key works elsewhere but not on Steam: That is expected under Steam’s documented flow. Use Steam Guard email or the Steam Mobile Authenticator rather than assuming FIDO2 support.

Buying checklist

  • Match USB-A or USB-C to the ports on the computers and phones you will use most.
  • Choose NFC when compatible-phone convenience matters, but expect USB to be the reliable fallback.
  • Confirm that the target gaming account explicitly supports a security key or passkey.
  • Choose the Security Key NFC for focused FIDO2 use; choose the YubiKey 5C NFC when its additional protocols solve a separate requirement.
  • Buy two compatible keys and register both during initial setup.
  • Keep Steam Guard or another documented fallback active until every intended sign-in path has been tested.
