For most reef photographers, the best starting point is the OM System Tough TG-7, used bare for snorkeling or in the PT-059 housing for scuba. It combines a compact body, dedicated macro modes and depth-based white balance with a housing path that reaches 45 m. Choose the GoPro HERO13 Black instead when stabilized video and moving subjects matter most, or SeaLife’s SportDiver Ultra when you want to operate a compatible phone inside a 40 m housing.

Depth rating and exact fit come before megapixels. A housing must be rated beyond your planned depth and must name your exact camera or phone model; ratings and control layouts are not interchangeable. Lights, filters, ports, trays and macro or wide-angle optics then determine how much color, detail and stability you actually get on a reef.

Quick comparison: the strongest reef options

System Documented depth Best for Key specifications and cautions
OM System Tough TG-7 15 m native Snorkeling, shallow reefs and compact macro stills 12 MP sensor, 4K/30p video, macro modes and water-depth white-balance settings. TechRadar’s 2026 review says image quality trails newer smartphones.
TG-7 or TG-6 in OM System PT-059 45 m (150 ft), as reported by Digital Camera World in 2026 One compact system that can move from snorkeling to scuba Camera-specific controls and a deeper seal system. OM System recommends annual internal-seal servicing to maintain the camera’s waterproof rating.
GoPro HERO13 Black 10 m native; up to 60 m in the manufacturer’s underwater housing Action video, moving fish and wide social-video reframing 5.3K capture and optional macro and ultra-wide Lens Mods. TechRadar’s 2026 review identifies low-light noise as a weakness.
SeaLife SportDiver Ultra 40 m (130 ft), individually tested Phone-first stills and video SeaLife’s 2025 brochure lists iPhone 10 and newer and most Android phones, dual leak alerts, a removable color-correction filter and app-based controls. Check the compatibility tool for your exact phone.
Advanced compact or mirrorless housing Depends on the camera, housing and port Experienced photographers needing interchangeable lenses and larger sensors Systems such as Nauticam offer specialist housings and dome or flat-port choices; verify current body, port and lens specifications before buying.

Why depth and compatibility come first

Native waterproofing is not a scuba plan

A camera’s native rating describes the sealed camera by itself. The Tough TG-7 is rated to 15 m, while the HERO13 Black is rated to 10 m. Those limits suit surface swimming, snorkeling and shallow reef dives, but they leave little margin for a descent, surge or accidental drop below the nominal depth. Treat the rating as a maximum operating limit, not a target depth.

A separate housing changes the pressure boundary. It must have its own published rating, a compatible control layout and a port that fits the camera’s lens. Putting a camera in a housing designed for a similar-looking model can obstruct buttons, prevent the shutter from reaching full travel or leave the lens too close to the port. A phone housing has an additional variable: the phone’s thickness, camera bump and lens positions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the rating to the actual dive

Plan for the deepest point of the dive, not the average depth. Add practical margin for waves, down-lines, photography stops and a future upgrade in your certification or dive plan. A housing rated to 40 m is suitable for dives within that limit; it does not make a 45 m dive equivalent to a 45 m-rated system.

Check every part of the optical path

Compatibility extends from the camera body to the front of the system. Confirm the exact body, lens, port, port extension, wet lens adapter and accessory mount. A flat port is generally useful for macro and close subjects; a dome port preserves a wider field of view for large scenes but requires the correct dome position and lens combination. If a product page does not identify your exact model and port arrangement, ask the manufacturer before purchase.

OM System Tough TG-7 with PT-059: the best all-round compact route

What the TG-7 does well

TechRadar’s 2026 review records 15 m waterproofing, a 12 MP sensor, 4K/30p video and dedicated macro capability. Depth-based white-balance modes are designed to compensate for the changing color of water as you descend. The body is pocketable and natively sealed, so it is quick to use from a boat, shore entry or snorkeling trip without assembling a housing.

Macro is the reason to choose it over a simple action camera for many reef subjects. Small coral polyps, nudibranchs and shrimp reward close focusing and careful framing. Use the camera’s macro modes, move slowly and keep the lens parallel to the subject when you want an evenly sharp frame. The 12 MP file gives useful room for cropping, but it is not a substitute for getting physically close.

The trade-off is image quality relative to current smartphones. The cited TechRadar reviewer says the TG-7 trails newer phones in image quality. That does not erase its advantages underwater: dedicated controls, a sealed body, depth-aware white balance and macro modes are easier to deploy in salt water than an unprotected phone.

What the PT-059 changes

Digital Camera World’s 2026 coverage identifies the PT-059 as compatible with both the TG-7 and TG-6 and reports that it extends the documented safe depth from 15 m (50 ft) to 45 m (150 ft). That turns the same compact camera concept into a practical scuba system without the bulk of an interchangeable-lens rig.

Before diving, verify that the housing is the PT-059 version for your camera generation, that the camera sits correctly in its tray and that every button engages. The housing’s front port and any wet accessory must also match the lens position. OM System recommends annual internal-seal servicing to maintain the camera’s waterproof rating; follow that schedule even when the housing looks clean from the outside.

Best TG-7 setup by subject

  • Close coral and small animals: TG-7 macro mode, a flat port and a compact video light or strobe placed off-axis to reduce backscatter.
  • Large coral heads: use the camera’s wider view, keep the lens close to the reef and add a wet wide-angle optic only when the adapter and port are approved for the TG-7 system.
  • Snorkeling video: shoot 4K/30p, lock a sensible white-balance mode for your depth and keep the sun behind or to the side of the camera.

GoPro HERO13 Black: the action-video choice

Depth, resolution and lenses

TechRadar’s 2026 review describes the HERO13 Black as natively waterproof to 10 m, with the manufacturer’s underwater housing raising the stated limit to 60 m. It records up to 5.3K, giving you flexibility to reframe a horizontal clip for social formats while retaining detail.

Optional macro and ultra-wide Lens Mods broaden its reef use. The ultra-wide view makes a diver-and-reef scene feel expansive; the macro option brings the camera closer to small subjects than the standard action-camera perspective. Lens Mods still need a compatible mount and a clean, scratch-free front element, and they do not remove the need for proper lighting.

Where it beats a compact camera

  • Stabilized video is straightforward when fish, turtles or divers are moving quickly.
  • The small body is easy to mount on a tray, handle or pole.
  • 5.3K capture supports cropping and extracting frames from motion sequences.

Where it needs help

The same TechRadar review warns of low-light noise. Water absorbs light rapidly, so a deep, cloudy or shaded reef can expose that weakness. Use video lights for close subjects, avoid extreme digital cropping and expose carefully rather than relying on a dark scene that will be brightened later. The HERO13 Black is strongest in clear, well-lit water and for motion; it is less compelling when your priority is quiet, detailed macro stills.

SeaLife SportDiver Ultra: a phone-first housing

Documented compatibility and depth

SeaLife’s 2025 brochure states that the SportDiver Ultra works with iPhone 10 and newer models and most Android phones. It lists a 40 m (130 ft) rating and says each housing is individually depth tested. The brochure also describes dual leak-avoidance alerts, a removable color-correction filter and app-based controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those details make the SportDiver Ultra attractive when your phone already produces the stills and video you want on land. The free companion app provides automatic and manual controls, while the housing’s physical controls let you operate the phone without exposing it to salt water.

Check your phone before ordering

Phone families vary in thickness, camera-bump size and lens placement. Use SeaLife’s compatibility checker for the exact phone, case dimensions and camera orientation. Remove a bulky case if the manufacturer requires it, confirm that the phone’s lenses align with the housing window and test every control above water. A nominally supported phone can still produce poor results if a lens is partly blocked or sits off-center behind the port.

Color and handling

The removable color-correction filter helps restore some warm colors that water removes. Take it off in very shallow, bright conditions if it reduces contrast, and use it with the depth and lighting conditions for which it was designed. Add a tray and lights if you plan close work; a phone housing held in one hand is harder to keep steady and more likely to brush the reef.

Advanced compact and mirrorless systems

Experienced photographers may prefer a larger-sensor compact or mirrorless camera in a specialist housing. Interchangeable lenses let you choose a true macro lens for small animals or a rectilinear or fisheye lens for broad reef scenes. Dome and flat ports can be selected for the lens and subject, and external strobes provide more power and control than most built-in lights.

Nauticam is an example of a specialist housing ecosystem, but model and port compatibility are mandatory checks. Confirm the exact camera body, lens, gear set, port, extension ring, viewfinder and vacuum or leak-monitoring accessories from current manufacturer documentation. The comparative information available for this category is not a substitute for a current model specification.

This route offers the most control and the largest potential files, but it also adds cost, buoyancy management, assembly time and maintenance. It is sensible when you already understand manual exposure and strobes, regularly dive with a buddy who can help with equipment and need results beyond a compact or action camera’s handling.

Choose by the reef photography you actually do

Your priority Best starting point Why Add first
Snorkeling and shallow reefs TG-7 used natively, or a compatible phone housing Fast deployment without a large rig; both options can stay within shallow-water limits. Wrist or tray support, then a color filter if your water is blue and your system supports one.
Scuba to recreational depths TG-7 in PT-059, HERO13 Black in its underwater housing, or SportDiver Ultra Each has a published housed depth, but the camera-specific controls and phone fit differ. Tray and lights; choose a system rated beyond your planned maximum.

Small coral details and macro stills TG-7, or an advanced camera with a dedicated macro lens Macro modes and close focusing matter more than headline video resolution. Macro lens or close-up accessory, flat port and an off-axis light.
Maximum control and print-quality files Mirrorless or advanced compact in a specialist housing Interchangeable lenses, larger sensors and external strobes provide the broadest control. Correct port and extension, dual strobes and a leak-monitoring routine.

Accessories that change reef results

Macro lenses and close-up optics

Water magnifies the effect of distance and particles. A macro lens or wet close-up optic lets you fill the frame while keeping the camera near the subject, reducing the amount of water between lens and coral. Check the working distance and whether the optic can be removed underwater before buying; a fixed optic is less flexible when a turtle or large coral head appears.

Wet wide-angle lenses and dome ports

Wide-angle optics make it possible to approach a large reef scene while retaining scale. A wet lens mounts outside a compatible housing and can be removed during a dive. Dome ports require precise lens-to-dome spacing and careful cleaning because a scratch or water droplet is visible across a large field of view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color filters

Water removes red and orange wavelengths first. A filter can restore a more natural balance when you are not using artificial light, but it also reduces the light reaching the sensor. Do not combine a strong filter with a dark scene and expect software to recover all lost detail.

Lights and strobes

Artificial light restores color and contrast at close range. Position lights to illuminate the subject from the side rather than pointing straight through the water column; this reduces backscatter from suspended particles. Video lights are continuous and easier for moving footage, while strobes deliver a short, powerful burst for stills. Match the light output and beam angle to the camera’s field of view.

Trays, handles and buoyancy

A tray with two handles gives you a stable platform and mounting points for lights. Add floats or trim weights only after you test the complete rig in fresh water or a controlled salt-water session. A rig that is strongly negative strains your wrists and encourages contact with coral; one that is strongly positive can drift away when released.

Prepare and shoot a reef dive step by step

  1. Define the subject and depth. Decide whether the dive is primarily macro, wide reef scenery, action video or a mixture. Record the planned maximum depth.
  2. Confirm the exact configuration. Match the camera or phone model, housing, port, lens, adapter and Lens Mod or wet optic. Do not rely on a family name alone.
  3. Inspect and clean seals. Work in a dry, grit-free place. Remove hair, sand and lint from every O-ring and sealing groove, and use only the lubricant specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Test the housing empty. Close it without the camera and submerge it in a basin or rinse tank. Look for bubbles, a changing leak indicator or moisture before loading expensive electronics.
  5. Load and test controls above water. Confirm shutter, record, playback, exposure, focus and lens-mode controls. Check that the phone’s app is open and that the screen does not lock.
  6. Set a starting exposure and color strategy. Choose an appropriate white-balance mode, filter or light plan for the depth. Keep shutter speed high enough for moving fish and avoid relying on extreme digital stabilization in dark water.
  7. Enter with the rig secured. Use a lanyard or clipped handle during entry. Do not drag the housing across the boat deck or let the port touch a rough surface.
  8. Approach slowly and stay off the reef. Control buoyancy first, then move toward the subject. Keep fins, elbows and the housing clear of coral and leave animals an escape route.
  9. Light deliberately. Angle lights away from the center of the lens axis, move close for macro and review a test frame for backscatter, clipped highlights and color.
  10. Review and adapt at depth. Check sharpness, histogram or exposure warning and focus on the camera screen. Change one variable at a time so you know what improved the frame.
  11. Rinse immediately after the dive. Soak the closed housing in fresh water, operate the buttons gently, then dry it before opening in a clean area.

Seal care, servicing and failure prevention

  • Use a clean assembly area: sand and sunscreen are common causes of O-ring leaks.
  • Do not open a wet housing: dry the exterior and your hands first, then open it away from spray.
  • Replace damaged seals: a nick, flattening or persistent grit is a reason to replace the O-ring, not to add more grease.
  • Observe service intervals: OM System recommends annual internal-seal servicing for the PT-059 system to maintain the camera’s waterproof rating.
  • Retest after every change: installing a wet lens, port extension, phone or battery door can disturb the seal or alter buoyancy.
  • Stop after any leak alert: end the dive, keep the housing closed until you are dry, remove the camera in a controlled place and follow the manufacturer’s drying and inspection procedure.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying by depth number alone

A 40 m housing is not automatically suitable for every phone, lens or camera. Correct the mistake by checking model, port and control compatibility and by choosing a rating above your planned maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a filter to replace lights

Filters rebalance available light; they cannot restore detail that never reached the sensor. In deep, cloudy or shaded water, add lights and move close to the subject.

Using a wide lens too far from the reef

Every extra meter adds water, haze and backscatter. Approach carefully, keep the front element clean and fill the frame with the subject instead of cropping a distant scene.

Ignoring low-light limits

The HERO13 Black’s cited low-light weakness is most visible in murky or deep scenes. Use lights, choose a sensible frame rate and avoid lifting badly underexposed footage in post-production.

Holding a phone housing one-handed

One-handed shooting increases shake and makes it easier to touch coral. Fit a tray or handle, use a lanyard and stabilize your body with buoyancy rather than your fins.

Final buying checklist

  • Does the housing list your exact camera or phone model?
  • Is its published depth greater than the deepest planned dive?
  • Do the lens, port, adapter and accessory mounts align?
  • Are macro or wide-angle optics available for the subjects you expect?
  • Will you shoot mostly stills, video or both?
  • Can you mount a tray and lights without making the rig unmanageable?
  • Do you understand the seal-inspection and service schedule?
  • Have you checked regional stock, current specifications and compatibility immediately before purchase?

Bottom line

The TG-7 is the most balanced entry for coral-reef photography: compact, macro-capable and usable to 15 m without a housing, with the PT-059 extending the documented system to 45 m for scuba. Pick the HERO13 Black when action video and stabilization dominate, and the SportDiver Ultra when a compatible phone is your preferred camera. Whichever route you choose, a correctly matched housing, careful seal routine, stable tray and appropriate light will influence reef images more than a headline resolution number.
