Short answer: there is no UK carrier service documented here as a confirmed, like-for-like replacement for Apple’s two-iPhone Handoff. Apple’s feature lets two iPhones use one number, but it requires a participating carrier, the same Apple Account and an eSIM on the second iPhone. EE’s Smart Number is different: it supports a primary iPhone plus up to five other Apple devices, but its terms exclude additional iPhones.

The closest currently documented substitute is Vodafone OneNumber for an untethered cellular Apple Watch or tablet. It shares a Vodafone plan’s allowances and starts at £7.50 per month, but it does not put the number on a second iPhone. O2 Sharer Plans can share data with up to nine devices, yet O2 says the service will soon be discontinued and it does not share one calling and texting number.

The UK options in one view

“Sharing one number across devices” describes three different arrangements, and choosing the wrong one leads to disappointment:

  • Two-iPhone Handoff: the same mobile number, calls, voicemail and messages available on two iPhones, with only one iPhone active on the mobile network at a time.
  • Companion-device number sharing: a phone plan extended to a cellular Apple Watch or supported tablet. The companion uses the primary account’s allowances, but it is not a second iPhone.
  • Data sharing: several devices use one plan’s data allowance. This does not clone the phone number for calls or SMS.

Apple’s support documentation describes the first arrangement as iPhone Handoff. It says you can use the same phone number on two iPhones and switch between them. The carrier must participate, both phones must use the same Apple Account, and the second iPhone receives an eSIM. The researched UK carrier pages document only the second and third arrangements, not a competing carrier-confirmed two-iPhone implementation.

What Apple iPhone Handoff actually provides

One number on two iPhones

With iPhone Handoff, two iPhones are associated with one telephone number. Calls, voicemail and messages follow the iPhone that is currently active. Apple also describes iCloud data synchronisation between the devices, so information associated with the same Apple Account is available on either phone.

This is different from forwarding calls, signing in to a messaging app on another handset or sharing a data allowance. The objective is a single mobile identity that can move between two iPhones.

Only one iPhone is active on the network

The arrangement is not two independent phones simultaneously registered as the same line. Apple states that only one iPhone is active on the carrier network at a time. Switching the active handset is therefore part of the design, rather than a fault or a sign that the second phone has failed.

Carrier participation is mandatory

Apple’s instructions tell customers to confirm participation with their carrier. A compatible iPhone and Apple Account are not enough if the network has not implemented the service. A carrier may also restrict eligibility by plan, account type or region, so ask for confirmation specifically for two iPhones using one number, not merely for Apple Watch or tablet connectivity.

The second phone uses an eSIM

Apple’s newer Handoff guidance says an eSIM is added to the second iPhone. That detail matters when checking hardware and account support: an older phone without eSIM capability, a locked handset or a plan that cannot provision the additional eSIM may prevent activation even when the primary iPhone is suitable.

Why EE Smart Number is not two-iPhone Handoff

EE’s current Smart Number terms describe one primary iPhone sharing its number with up to five paired Apple devices. Apple Watch and iPad are examples of those paired devices, but the terms explicitly exclude iPhones from the paired-device limit.

The primary iPhone must be switched on and have mobile coverage for SMS. That dependency is important: the companion devices are extensions of the primary line, not independent iPhones that can replace it on the network. This explains why an EE customer may be able to use the number on a watch or iPad but cannot automatically add another iPhone under the older Smart Number arrangement.

Do not conflate the two services. Smart Number’s “up to five Apple devices” wording refers to companion hardware, while Apple’s newer Handoff documentation is specifically about two iPhones and an eSIM on the second handset.

Is any UK carrier a confirmed two-iPhone alternative?

No researched UK carrier page confirms a competing service that reproduces Apple’s two-iPhone Handoff. That is a statement about the carrier documentation available for this comparison, not a claim that no network could ever support it. Carrier products and eligibility rules change, and Apple directs customers to verify participation with the carrier.

If a second iPhone is non-negotiable, contact the network before changing plan or buying hardware. Ask these questions in writing or through a support channel that records the answer:

  • Does this exact plan support Apple iPhone Handoff or an equivalent two-iPhone service?
  • Can one number be provisioned on two iPhones, rather than on a watch or tablet?
  • Is an eSIM required on the second iPhone, and does the account permit it?
  • Which iPhone models, software versions, account types and regions are eligible?
  • When the phones switch, which device receives calls, SMS, voicemail and verification codes?
  • Is there a recurring multi-device charge, an activation fee or a limit on switching?

Until the carrier gives a current, specific confirmation, treat claims that a standard multi-device add-on will put one number on two iPhones as unverified.

Vodafone OneNumber: the closest documented practical substitute

What it does

Vodafone says OneNumber shares a mobile plan’s data, minutes and messages with a paired cellular smartwatch or tablet. The connected device can use the mobile network when it is away from the primary phone’s Bluetooth range. On supported hardware, calls and messages can continue after the Bluetooth connection is lost.

The service starts from £7.50 per month on Vodafone’s UK product information accessed on 20 October 2026. That is a stated starting price, not a universal price for every plan or device. Vodafone requires an eligible Pay Monthly Airtime Plan and cellular-enabled hardware.

Supported Apple hardware

Vodafone lists cellular Apple Watch Series 3 and newer generations as compatible. The watch must be the cellular version; a GPS-only watch cannot connect directly to the mobile network through OneNumber.

Vodafone says iPads cannot receive calls and texts through OneNumber. An eligible cellular iPad can use the phone’s data allowance, but it is not a second handset for the shared number. This distinction is decisive for anyone whose requirement is ordinary phone calls or SMS on an iPad.

What the connected device shares

The formal agreement describes the connected device as sharing the primary account’s allowances and being paired with the primary mobile. Usage therefore draws from the same plan’s data, minutes and messages rather than creating a separate full mobile contract.

Vodafone OneNumber characteristic Documented position
Primary use Extend a Vodafone plan to a compatible cellular watch or tablet
Starting monthly charge £7.50 per month, according to Vodafone’s UK product page accessed 20 October 2026
Plan requirement Eligible Vodafone Pay Monthly Airtime Plan
Apple Watch support Cellular Apple Watch Series 3 and newer generations listed
Out-of-Bluetooth operation Connected hardware can switch to the mobile network when away from the primary phone
iPad calling and texting Not supported through OneNumber; iPad can use the phone’s data allowance
Second iPhone support Not documented as a two-iPhone Handoff replacement

How to evaluate OneNumber before ordering

  1. Identify the device you need to keep connected. If it is an Apple Watch, check that it is a cellular Series 3 or newer model. If it is an iPad, decide whether data-only access is sufficient because Vodafone does not provide calls and texts on iPad through OneNumber.
  2. Check the primary plan. Confirm with Vodafone that the exact Pay Monthly Airtime Plan is eligible. The £7.50 starting figure does not establish eligibility for every tariff.
  3. Check account and hardware pairing. The connected device must be paired with the primary mobile and use compatible cellular hardware.
  4. Confirm the allowance behavior. Ask how the watch or tablet consumes the plan’s data, minutes and messages, and whether any account-level restrictions apply.
  5. Confirm the recurring cost. Have Vodafone state the monthly charge for your plan and device, including any one-time activation or hardware costs.
  6. Test the real use case. Before relying on the service for emergencies or travel, test the watch away from the iPhone and verify that the functions you need continue over the mobile network.

O2 Sharer Plans: data sharing with a stated sunset

What the plan allows

O2 documents Sharer Plans as a way to share a lead device’s data allowance with up to nine other devices, including phones, tablets and SIMs. The arrangement is useful when several devices need internet access from one allowance.

It is not number cloning. The additional devices do not become extensions of one calling and texting number on two iPhones. A phone added as a data-sharing device remains a separate phone for voice and SMS purposes.

Why availability is uncertain

O2 says: “Our sharer plans will soon be discontinued, which means you’ll no longer be able to share data with other devices, or use someone else’s data.” The O2 page was last updated on 6 February 2025. Existing customers should verify their status directly, and new customers should not assume that a plan is available merely because older account documentation or third-party articles mention it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, treat Sharer Plans as a legacy or transition path only. They may solve a short-term data requirement where O2 confirms continued service, but they are a poor fit for a reader whose non-negotiable requirement is one number for calls, voicemail and SMS on two iPhones.

Choose by the problem you are trying to solve

You carry two iPhones and need one number on both

Ask carriers specifically about Apple iPhone Handoff and wait for an explicit confirmation. Neither Vodafone OneNumber nor O2 Sharer Plans is documented as a two-iPhone solution. Buying a second iPhone or adding a data SIM will not, by itself, reproduce shared calls, voicemail and SMS.

You want to leave your iPhone behind with an Apple Watch

Vodafone OneNumber is the strongest documented match among these options, provided you have an eligible Vodafone plan and a cellular Apple Watch Series 3 or newer. The watch can use the mobile network outside Bluetooth range, subject to Vodafone’s eligibility and pairing rules.

You need internet on several devices

A data-sharing plan is the relevant category, not Handoff. O2’s documentation describes sharing with up to nine additional phones, tablets or SIMs, but its discontinuation notice makes current availability uncertain. Confirm the service before relying on it for a new setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want an iPad to make ordinary calls and receive SMS

Do not select Vodafone OneNumber on the assumption that every cellular Apple device receives the phone number’s calls and texts. Vodafone specifically says iPads can use the phone’s data allowance but cannot receive calls and texts through OneNumber.

Costs, hardware and account checks

Pricing is only meaningful after the device and plan are known. Vodafone’s £7.50-per-month figure is a starting price for OneNumber, while Apple Handoff pricing and eligibility are carrier-specific and not established by the documented UK pages here. O2’s Sharer Plans have a stated device limit but a warning that the service will soon end.

  • Hardware: distinguish cellular from Wi-Fi-only watches and tablets. Vodafone’s Apple Watch list applies to cellular models.
  • Plan: confirm that the primary Vodafone tariff is an eligible Pay Monthly Airtime Plan, or that the carrier supports Handoff on your exact account.
  • eSIM: a two-iPhone Handoff setup requires an eSIM on the second iPhone under Apple’s guidance.
  • Account identity: the two iPhones must use the same Apple Account for Handoff.
  • Coverage and power: EE’s Smart Number terms require the primary iPhone to be switched on and covered for SMS; ask whether a proposed service has a similar dependency.
  • Recurring fees: request the monthly connectivity charge and any activation cost in writing. A data-sharing allowance and a shared-number add-on are different products.
  • Geography and change risk: these are UK product positions. Carrier support, prices and retirement dates can change, so recheck before porting a number or purchasing hardware.

Troubleshooting and common wrong turns

The second iPhone has data but no shared calls or texts

That usually indicates a data SIM or a sharer arrangement rather than Handoff. Check whether the carrier explicitly provisioned Apple’s two-iPhone service and whether the second handset received the required eSIM. A plan that merely shares data cannot create the shared calling identity.

The watch works near the iPhone but not elsewhere

Check that the watch is a cellular model, that OneNumber is active on the correct Vodafone account and that the watch is paired with the primary mobile. Test again outside Bluetooth range; the documented behavior is a switch to the mobile network when the secondary device leaves Bluetooth range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An iPad has internet but cannot make or receive phone calls

This matches Vodafone’s stated OneNumber behavior for iPad: data use is supported, while calls and texts are not. It is not evidence that activation failed.

An old O2 sharer setup stops accepting devices

O2’s discontinuation notice means new additions or continued sharing may no longer be available. Confirm the account’s current status with O2 rather than assuming that an older plan can be recreated.

One iPhone still receives messages after switching

Apple’s Handoff model has one active iPhone on the carrier network at a time. Verify that both phones use the same Apple Account, that the carrier has enabled the feature and that the intended handset is the active one. If the carrier cannot confirm participation, the behavior may simply reflect that the service is unavailable on that plan.

The clearest physical-product route: a cellular Apple Watch

For readers searching for a tangible alternative, a cellular Apple Watch is the product category most closely aligned with the documented UK substitute. Vodafone explicitly lists cellular Apple Watch Series 3 and newer for OneNumber. The watch can continue using the mobile network away from the iPhone’s Bluetooth range, while drawing on the paired phone plan’s allowances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its fit is deliberately limited: this is a watch-based companion service, not a second-iPhone arrangement. If your priority is leaving the phone at home while remaining reachable on a watch, it addresses that use case. If your priority is carrying two iPhones with the same number, it does not.

Questions to ask before committing

Write down the exact outcome you need and have the carrier answer against that wording. “One number across devices” can mean a watch, an iPad with data, two iPhones, or several data-only SIMs. Ask whether the service provides calls, voicemail, SMS and verification messages, or only internet access; whether the secondary device works away from the primary phone; which hardware generations qualify; what the recurring charge is; and what happens if the primary handset is switched off.

That checklist prevents the most common mismatch in this market: purchasing a data-sharing add-on when the real requirement is a second iPhone with the same mobile identity.
