For a quick mobile-layout check, use Chrome DevTools’ device mode: choose a device preset or enter a custom viewport, then capture the visible screen or the full page. For repeatable screenshots in tests or CI, use Playwright. For hosted comparisons across responsive breakpoints, consider Percy. Desktop emulation is not a substitute for checking a physical phone when device-specific behavior matters.

Use Chrome DevTools for a quick mobile-size screenshot
Set a mobile viewport
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on the device toolbar, then choose a device preset or select responsive sizing and enter the width and height you want to inspect.
- Check the layout at the target width. DevTools device mode also offers controls such as orientation, CPU throttling, network throttling, and geolocation.
Capture the viewport or page
From DevTools, capture either the visible viewport or a full-size screenshot, depending on whether you need the current screen or the entire page. The exact controls can vary by Chrome version; consult Chrome’s device mode documentation for the current interface.
Device mode is a first-order approximation, not a physical mobile device. The page runs in a desktop or laptop environment, so some phone and mobile-browser characteristics are not reproduced. Chrome’s guidance is: “When in doubt, your best bet is to actually run your page on a mobile device.” If a layout depends on a particular handset or browser, check it on a phone you already have rather than treating an emulator capture as proof of identical rendering.

Automate screenshot comparisons with Playwright
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() visual comparison workflow captures screenshots repeatedly until consecutive captures match, then compares the result with a baseline. This makes it suitable for checking whether a responsive layout changes unexpectedly in automated tests or CI.

The example uses a 375-by-812 CSS-pixel viewport as a chosen test size, not as a claim that it represents every phone.
For reliable comparisons, run the baseline and comparison in a consistent environment. Playwright warns that output can differ with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use Percy for hosted responsive comparisons
Percy’s responsive visual testing workflow accepts selected breakpoint widths and captures comparisons at each one. Its documentation’s example counts captures at 375px and 1280px as two screenshots toward monthly usage. Account for every selected width when planning a run.

Responsive widths versus real mobile browsers
Resizing a desktop browser to a breakpoint and capturing a page in a mobile browser are different tests. Percy’s documented mobile-browser workflow uses real mobile devices: the supplied width parameter is ignored, screenshot width is fixed by the device, and portrait is the default orientation. The documentation lists Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android (Beta), and says mobile-browser access requires the Percy Desktop & Mobile plan. Confirm current browser coverage and plan terms before choosing it for a project.

Practical checks before trusting a mobile screenshot
- Use the viewport or breakpoint that corresponds to the layout you want to evaluate; a screenshot at one width does not show how the page behaves at every mobile size.
- For manual inspection, capture the visible viewport when you are diagnosing a specific screen and the full page when you need to inspect the overall page layout.
- For visual regression, keep the browser and execution environment stable, and review baseline changes rather than automatically accepting every new image.
- When the result depends on real mobile hardware or a specific mobile browser, validate on that device or browser. Desktop emulation can help with responsive layout work but cannot reproduce every mobile behavior.
- If using Percy, include the number of widths in your usage planning and verify current mobile-browser plan and coverage details.
