Apple’s built-in Speak Screen and Speak Selection features are the best first choice for most iPhone and iPad owners. They can read selected text and much of what is on screen without installing another app. Dedicated text-to-speech apps earn their place when you need OCR for scanned pages, document libraries, annotations, cloud imports, offline playback, or specialized voices.

For most people, the best text-to-speech option on an iPhone or iPad is already installed: Apple’s Speak Screen and Speak Selection features can read webpages, selected passages, and other on-screen text without an additional app. They are the best place to start if you want occasional listening or an accessibility aid.

A dedicated app becomes worthwhile when you need a document library, scanned-PDF OCR, annotations, cloud-file imports, background or offline playback, specialized pronunciation controls, or more voice choices. Among the apps reviewed here, Speechify is the broad general-purpose choice, Voice Dream Reader is the stronger document-workflow option, NaturalReader handles varied files and photographed pages, and ElevenReader focuses on AI narration for books, articles, documents, and web links. These are feature-based recommendations from current App Store descriptions, not results from independent hands-on testing.

Best built-in option: Apple Speak Screen and Speak Selection

Apple’s built-in speech tools are the sensible first choice when you want to listen to a webpage, an email, a selected passage, or ordinary screen content. They do not attempt to replace every dedicated reading app: the Apple tools provide system-level speech and controls, while specialist apps add document importing, OCR, annotations, library management, or other workflows.

How to enable Apple’s speech features

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Spoken Content. Apple can reorganize labels between iOS and iPadOS releases, so use the Settings search field if the wording differs on your device.
  3. Turn on Speak Screen to have the device read the current screen. On supported screens, invoke it with the two-finger swipe down from the top of the display.
  4. Turn on Speak Selection if you want to select text first and then tap the speech command in the selection menu.
  5. Use the on-screen speech controller when it appears to pause, change the speaking rate, or move through the spoken content.

For long-form reading, Apple’s Accessibility Reader can present text in a simplified reading view and includes audio controls. Exact availability and menu labels can vary by operating-system release and by the app or webpage being read.

Best dedicated text-to-speech apps

Speechify: best broad, general-purpose workflow

Speechify is the most natural candidate for someone who wants one polished reader for documents, articles, PDFs, email, and other text. Its App Store listing documents adjustable playback speed and synchronized highlighting, which can help you follow along visually while listening.

Choose Speechify when your priority is getting a variety of ordinary reading material into one listening workflow rather than building a heavily annotated academic library. It is less useful to describe it as universally “best,” because voice preference, language, document type, plan, and device all affect the experience.

Before subscribing, check the current App Store listing for the voices, limits, supported imports, and plan terms you actually need. App pricing, in-app purchases, and feature availability are volatile.

Voice Dream Reader: best for advanced document handling

Voice Dream Reader is the specialist choice when reading is part of a larger document workflow. Its cited listing describes offline playback, background audio, scanned-PDF text recognition, annotations, bookmarks, search, pronunciation customization, and library synchronization. Those features make it particularly relevant for students, accessibility-focused readers, and anyone working through lengthy documents.

  • 【Mini Ebook Ink Reader】: The HAMGEEK RW01 Mini EReader is a powerful companion for reading enthusiasts, featuring a compact 2.66-inch electronic ink display and a range of unique, user-friendly features. It is free from blue light and flicker, offering a reading experience that closely resembles that of paper books.
  • 【Ultra-Portability】: This mini electronic ink reader features a compact and lightweight body, measuring approximately 4 × 8.5 cm and weighing only 43g. This reader fits easily into a pocket or small bag, making it perfect for daily commutes, business trips, and short breaks. Enjoy reading anytime, anywhere, and make the most of your fragmented time.
  • 【Long Battery Life】: A single charge supports up to one month of standby time in clock mode, and several weeks of reading in reading mode (specific duration varies depending on usage and settings). No need for frequent charging—say goodbye to battery anxiety and enjoy uninterrupted reading.
  • 【Includes 32GB Memory Card】: It comes with a 32GB memory card and also supports firmware upgrades for added functionality and performance improvements. It supports common file formats such as EPUB and TXT. A wide range of books and documents can be downloaded from the internet and read smoothly on the device.
  • 【High Customizability】: The product provides hardware schematics. If you are a programming enthusiast, you can write your own custom firmware, offering great flexibility and fun. The device can scan font files (.bin) to switch between different font styles and adjust font size, allowing you to customize the display for the most comfortable reading experience.

Its OCR support matters when a PDF contains page images rather than selectable text. Its pronunciation tools can also be more important than having the largest voice catalog if you regularly encounter names, technical terms, or specialized vocabulary.

Do not assume every voice or feature is included with every purchase or plan. Confirm the current listing for your region before relying on offline access, premium voices, cloud synchronization, or OCR.

NaturalReader: best for mixed files and photographed pages

NaturalReader is a strong candidate when your source material is inconsistent. Its App Store description covers PDFs, Word and PowerPoint files, DRM-free EPUB, cloud documents, images, and photographed pages. It also describes camera scanning for physical books, handouts, and notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes NaturalReader worth considering if you move between office documents, files stored in cloud services, and paper material. It is less about choosing a single ideal format and more about converting many common inputs into text that can be spoken.

OCR is not magic. A photograph with glare, a curved book page, small type, handwriting, columns, tables, or an unusual layout may produce recognition errors. Treat “supports OCR” as “can convert some scanned or photographed text,” not as a guarantee that every page will be read accurately.

ElevenReader: best candidate for AI narration and web links

ElevenReader is aimed at readers who want AI narration across books, PDFs, documents, news, blogs, and web links. Its cited listing also documents highlighting, bookmarks, notes, adjustable playback speed, and multilingual support.

It is a relevant choice when you commonly encounter an article as a URL or want a more expressive AI-voice approach to long-form listening. “Natural-sounding” remains a preference-sensitive description, not an objective result established by this guide. Voice quality can vary by language, selected voice, device, plan, and the material being read.

The current cited App Store listing states a minimum requirement of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. Check the live listing before installing, particularly if your iPhone or iPad cannot update to those versions.

ClaroSpeak: best specialized alternative for proofreading and dictation

ClaroSpeak is worth a look if text-to-speech is only one part of what you need. The cited listing combines speech with proofreading, imported documents, dictation, OCR, and cloud-storage features. Its paid features include capturing text from a photo.

Because the cited listing is from a non-U.S. storefront, do not assume that the same edition, price, feature set, or availability applies in the United States or another region. Check your local App Store listing before treating it as a direct comparison with the other apps.

How to choose the right app

Choose based on what you want to hear

  • Webpages, selected passages, and screen content: Start with Apple Speak Screen or Speak Selection.
  • PDFs, articles, email, and general documents: Consider Speechify.
  • Scanned textbooks or PDFs: Consider Voice Dream Reader if OCR, annotations, search, pronunciation tools, and offline-oriented reading are important.
  • Office files, cloud documents, images, and paper pages: Consider NaturalReader.
  • Books, news, blogs, articles, and web links with AI narration: Consider ElevenReader.
  • Speech plus proofreading, dictation, or OCR: Consider ClaroSpeak, subject to regional availability.

Decide whether you need OCR

A normal PDF may contain selectable text, while a scanned PDF may be a collection of page images. A TTS app cannot reliably read image-only pages until OCR converts the visible characters into machine-readable text. NaturalReader, Voice Dream Reader, and ClaroSpeak document OCR-related functions, but none should be treated as infallible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If accuracy matters—for example, with medication instructions, legal documents, equations, or study material—visually check the recognized text. Keep the original document available and expect to correct errors in complex layouts.

Check offline and background requirements

If you listen while commuting or in places with unreliable connectivity, look specifically for documented offline playback and background audio. Voice Dream’s cited listing identifies both. Do not generalize that capability to every app, voice, file type, or subscription tier. A feature can also depend on whether the document and voice have already been downloaded.

Treat voices and speed as personal preferences

Speechify, Voice Dream Reader, and ElevenReader all describe voice or playback customization, but no voice is ideal for everyone. Test the same paragraph at a comfortable speed, with the language and type of content you actually read. A voice that sounds pleasant for a news article may be tiring for a textbook, and pronunciation can differ substantially between languages and specialized terms.

Consider highlighting and annotations

Synchronized highlighting is useful when you want to listen and follow the words on screen. Speechify documents synchronized highlighting; ElevenReader documents highlighting, bookmarks, and notes; Voice Dream documents annotations, bookmarks, and search. Apple’s built-in tools are better understood as system reading controls rather than a full research library.

Best Value
Muddy SD Card Reader/Viewer
  • Playback: Features a 1080p video playback
  • Screen: Features a 4.3 inch color LCD screen
  • Menu: Features a Intuitive menu operation
  • Jack: Features a headphone jack for audio
  • SD Card Slot: Features a SD card slot up to 32GB

Limitations and checks before installing

  • App Store information changes: prices, ratings, subscription names, supported languages, minimum operating systems, and feature availability can change.
  • Plans matter: do not promise free access, premium voices, OCR, offline operation, or unlimited reading without checking the current listing and the reader’s plan.
  • Compatibility is not uniform: an app may support iPhone and iPad but require a newer iOS or iPadOS release. ElevenReader’s cited listing requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later.
  • OCR has failure modes: glare, skewed photographs, columns, tables, handwriting, unusual fonts, and low resolution can reduce recognition accuracy.
  • Voice quality is subjective: the descriptions here distinguish documented controls from independent quality claims. No hands-on test was performed for this comparison.
  • Regional editions differ: ClaroSpeak’s cited listing is from a non-U.S. storefront, so verify local availability and pricing.

Our practical recommendation

Enable Apple Speak Screen and Speak Selection first. They are enough for many people who only occasionally want a webpage, selected passage, or screen read aloud. Move to a dedicated app when you can name the missing workflow: Speechify for broad document and article reading, Voice Dream Reader for document tools and offline-oriented study, NaturalReader for mixed files and photographed pages, ElevenReader for AI narration and web links, or ClaroSpeak when proofreading and dictation are equally important.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make my iPhone or iPad read text aloud?

Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Spoken Content. Turn on Speak Screen to read the current screen with a two-finger swipe down, or turn on Speak Selection to read text you highlight. Apple may change menu labels between iOS and iPadOS releases.

What is the best text-to-speech app for reading PDFs on an iPhone?

Start with Apple Speak Screen or Speak Selection for webpages and selected text. For a dedicated document workflow, Speechify is a broad option; Voice Dream Reader is more specialized for scanned PDFs, annotations, pronunciation tools, and offline-oriented playback.

Which iPhone text-to-speech apps can read scanned documents?

NaturalReader, Voice Dream Reader, and ClaroSpeak document OCR-related features. OCR converts text in a scan or photograph into machine-readable text, but accuracy can suffer with glare, columns, tables, handwriting, low resolution, or unusual layouts.
