For text baked into a photo, choose Adobe Firefly if you want it to generate a replacement background, Canva Grab Text if you want to isolate and delete lettering, or Photoshop if you want more selection, fill and layer controls. None is a guaranteed one-click fix: inspect the result, especially where the text covers detailed or patterned imagery.
How these text remover tools work
These tools address lettering that is part of an image, such as a sign or caption flattened into a photo. They do not edit a live text layer in a design file. The main difference is what happens to the selected lettering: Canva says Grab Text extracts it for deletion, while Firefly and Photoshop fill the area it occupied. Photoshop also offers a pixel-based fill that samples nearby image content.
The product descriptions below come from Adobe and Canva. They explain different workflows, not results from a standardized, independent comparison, so there is no evidence-based overall winner.

Adobe Firefly Generative Remove
Firefly is the most direct fit if you want to paint over text and have the tool generate a replacement. Adobe says the feature reads surrounding textures, colors and patterns when making the fill. Its documented process is to upload an image, brush over the lettering, generate a result, review or refine it, and download the image. Adobe says uploads retain their original dimensions and that common image formats are supported.
How to remove text in Firefly
- Open Adobe Firefly in a browser and upload the photo.
- Use the brush to select the text you want removed. Adobe recommends a broader selection on simple backgrounds and a more precise selection for complex imagery.
- Click Generate, then review the result. Refine the selection and generate again if edges or details do not look right.
- Download the edited image when the repaired area looks acceptable.
Adobe presents Generative Remove as an alternative to a healing brush: a healing brush clones nearby pixels, whereas Generative Remove creates new content intended to fit the surroundings. Adobe says generation can be better suited to varied textures or larger selections than a cloned patch, but the result depends on the background and selection. Treat that as Adobe’s product guidance, not a guarantee.

Firefly is browser-accessible, including on phones and tablets, according to Adobe’s FAQ. Adobe says users can access it with an Adobe account; free users receive free daily generations, while paid plans offer additional generative credits and advanced features. The reviewed feature page does not give a stable exact credit allowance or plan price.
Canva Grab Text
Canva’s Grab Text is intended to isolate and extract lettering from an image so it can be deleted without changing the background or image quality. Canva describes it for cases such as outdated captions, labels, price lists, watermarks and logos. This is Canva’s description of its feature; no independent output-quality comparison is established here.

Canva says the tools work online without downloading software, but Grab Text and Magic Grab are not available in Videos, Docs or the Photo Editor. Do not assume the feature works across every Canva surface or removes text from video.
When Grab Text is the better fit
- You want to remove text within an online Canva design workflow.
- You want to select and delete lettering rather than ask a generative fill to invent replacement pixels.
- Your image is being edited in a Canva surface where the feature is available.

Photoshop: generative and pixel-based options
Photoshop offers more than one way to remove text. Generative Fill creates new content for a selection. Content-Aware Fill replaces selected content using surrounding pixels, and Adobe’s help page says you can adjust the sampling area. Delete and Fill Selection automatically removes a selection and fills it to match the surrounding image.
Generative Fill for more review control
In an Adobe Learn tutorial published December 17, 2025, Adobe instructor Jan Kabili demonstrates selecting an object, optionally expanding the selection to leave a buffer, and clicking Generate. The tutorial says a prompt is not required for removal. Photoshop creates three variations, and another generation can create three more. The generated result sits on a separate generative layer with a mask, which can be disabled or deleted to restore the underlying image.

Kabili says, “Generative Fill often gives you the best results, particularly when you’re trying to remove something large.” This is her guidance in Adobe’s tutorial, not an independent benchmark. See Adobe’s Generative Fill tutorial.
Content-Aware Fill and Delete and Fill Selection
Use Content-Aware Fill when you want Photoshop to construct a fill from surrounding pixels and adjust the sampling area. For a more automatic alternative, Adobe documents Delete and Fill Selection as a way to remove selected content and fill the space with matching surroundings. These pixel-based approaches differ from Generative Fill, which creates new content. Consult Adobe’s help for Content-Aware Fill and Delete and Fill Selection.
How to get a cleaner result
- Select with the background in mind. For a plain wall or sky, a broad selection may be sufficient. Around detailed imagery, select more precisely so the fill has a clearer boundary. Adobe specifically notes that background complexity and selection size affect results in Firefly.
- Check the full area around the text. A selection that is too tight can leave fragments or an obvious edge; one that is too broad can affect nearby details. Refine the selection and try again if the repair looks wrong.
- Inspect at actual size. Look for broken edges, repeating patterns, texture changes and details that should continue through the repaired area. A plausible preview is not proof that every detail is intact.
- Use reversibility where available. Photoshop’s documented Generative Fill layer and mask can be disabled or deleted, letting you compare the generated result with the underlying image.
No reviewed product page guarantees a flawless repair on every image. Adobe explicitly says Firefly results may vary with background complexity and selection size; examine the output rather than assuming a generated fill will be invisible.
Watermarks, rights and sensitive images
Only remove lettering from images you own or have permission to modify. Adobe says removing watermarks from images you own or have explicit rights to modify is permitted, and warns that removing them from material you do not own or whose license prohibits modification may violate copyright law. Canva likewise warns that watermarks can indicate copyrighted material and that unauthorized removal is generally considered illegal. These are general cautions, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
