Microsoft Nonprofits, AWS, and Cisco offer the strongest technology-grant paths beyond Google.org. Microsoft is usually the best fit for recurring productivity, identity, security, and cloud infrastructure. AWS is aimed at cloud-centered projects and offers both a competitive U.S. grant and promotional credits available to nonprofits worldwide. Cisco covers donated networking, security, hardware, software, services, and a separate cash-grant route for technology-enabled social programs. TechSoup is an important distribution and capacity-building partner, but it is not a single universal grant.

The right choice depends on what you need to pay for: recurring software, cloud consumption, donated equipment, implementation capacity, or cash for a defined program. Eligibility, award size, deadlines, and country rules change, so confirm the live terms before submitting an application.

Which technology grant should your nonprofit pursue first?

Match the award type to the expense rather than applying to every program indiscriminately. A nonprofit replacing email and endpoint systems needs a different route from one building a data platform or delivering a technology-enabled health service.

Program What it can provide Geography and legal status Strongest fit Important condition
Microsoft Nonprofits Grants and discounts across Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Windows, security, and related products Eligibility and validation are country-sensitive; mission and organizational criteria apply Email, collaboration, identity, endpoint management, cybersecurity, business applications, and Azure workloads Microsoft’s nonprofit FAQ states that organizations failing the 85% utilization requirement risk disqualification from future grants
AWS Imagine Grant Competitive grant support for technology-enabled mission projects; associated AWS material has referenced awards up to $150,000, subject to the current category and cycle Registered U.S. 501(c) nonprofits Cloud migration, application modernization, data platforms, artificial intelligence, and digital services Competitive selection; verify the current 2026 opening schedule, award category, and terms
AWS nonprofit promotional credits Promotional AWS credits, described by AWS as up to $5,000 USD annually Nonprofits worldwide, subject to current terms Cloud usage for an approved or eligible workload Credit amount, expiration, eligible services, and application rules can change
Cisco Technology Grant Program Donated hardware, software, and services Qualifying nonprofits under Cisco’s current criteria Networking, cybersecurity, connectivity, productivity, scalability, and cost efficiency Equipment and services must support an eligible nonprofit need; review the current qualification rules
Cisco Global Impact Cash Grants Cash grants for programs addressing significant social problems, especially where technology improves reach or efficiency Nonprofits and NGOs meeting program criteria A defined social-impact program with measurable technology-enabled outcomes General operating costs are excluded except when directly tied to the program; other exclusions apply
TechSoup Access to donated or discounted products, services, training, and capacity support from technology providers Inventory, fees, and availability vary by country Implementation, software distribution, training, and smaller technology purchases It is a partner and distribution channel, not a universal cash grant

Use the table as a triage tool. If the need is a recurring license or security stack, begin with Microsoft. If the organization has a technical build with a defined deployment plan, investigate AWS. If the project needs network equipment or donated services, investigate Cisco. If the project itself needs cash for direct delivery, Cisco’s cash-grant route may be more relevant than an in-kind award. Use TechSoup to turn an award or donated product into an operational system.

Microsoft Nonprofits: best for organization-wide infrastructure

Microsoft’s nonprofit offer combines free technology grants and custom-built solutions with discounts. The portfolio spans Azure cloud services, Microsoft 365 productivity tools, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Windows, security, and related products. That breadth matters because a nonprofit can standardize identity, email, collaboration, devices, data, and line-of-business workflows instead of assembling unrelated tools.

What Microsoft funding can cover

  • Productivity and collaboration: Microsoft 365 tools for email, documents, meetings, messaging, and file sharing.
  • Identity and endpoint management: Centralized user accounts, device controls, and security policies.
  • Cloud workloads: Azure hosting, databases, analytics, integration, and other eligible services.
  • Business applications: Dynamics 365 and Power Platform for constituent management, case work, reporting, and workflow automation.
  • Operating systems and security: Windows and related security capabilities where the current nonprofit offer permits them.

Eligibility and validation

Microsoft requires nonprofit validation and publishes mission and organizational criteria. Eligibility is not identical in every country, and an organization’s legal form, purpose, and relationship to government or political activity can affect the result. Check the current Microsoft nonprofit eligibility page immediately before applying; an organization that qualified previously may need to validate again under revised rules.

The 85% utilization obligation

Microsoft’s nonprofit FAQ says organizations that fail to use at least 85% of granted software risk disqualification from future grants. Treat this as an implementation requirement, not an administrative footnote. Before accepting licenses, estimate active users, devices, storage, and rollout dates. Assign an owner to monitor adoption and remove unused seats. If the organization cannot reach the threshold, a smaller request or phased deployment is safer than accepting more licenses than staff can use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Microsoft is the better choice

Choose Microsoft when the grant would replace several disconnected systems with one managed environment, when security and identity are priorities, or when staff already have experience with Microsoft products. It is less suitable when the project needs unrestricted cash, specialized hardware, or a cloud platform outside the Microsoft ecosystem.

AWS Imagine Grant and nonprofit credits: best for cloud-centered projects

AWS describes a nonprofit portfolio that combines grant support, cloud credits, training, and mission-technology resources. Its flagship AWS Imagine Grant is a competitive opportunity for registered U.S. 501(c) nonprofits using technology to address major challenges. AWS separately describes promotional credits for nonprofits worldwide, including up to $5,000 USD annually under the 2026 program information. The promotional-credit route is not the same as the competitive grant.

AWS Imagine Grant

An application should explain the social problem, the people affected, the proposed technology, the implementation team, and the measurable change expected. A credible plan identifies the services to be built or migrated, the data involved, the deployment stages, and how the organization will operate the system after the award period.

AWS-associated program material has referenced an AWS Imagine Grant figure of up to $150,000 USD. That figure should not be treated as a guaranteed award or a universal cap: confirm the live cycle, category, eligibility, and award amount before quoting it in a budget or board paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWS promotional credits

AWS describes promotional credits of up to $5,000 USD annually for nonprofits worldwide, subject to current terms. Credits are generally useful for eligible AWS consumption rather than unrestricted salaries, rent, or other general operating expenses. Confirm the application route, expiration date, eligible services, account structure, and any spending limits before moving production workloads.

When AWS is the better choice

AWS is a strong fit for cloud migration, a new digital service, data engineering, analytics, artificial intelligence, or an application that must scale across regions. It is a weaker fit when the organization has no technical owner, no data-governance plan, or no budget for costs that credits do not cover. Cloud credits can reduce infrastructure spending while leaving architecture, security, monitoring, support, and staff time as real obligations.

Cisco programs: donated technology or cash for a social-impact program

Cisco operates two materially different routes. The Technology Grant Program provides donated hardware, software, and services to qualifying nonprofits. Global Impact Cash Grants are a separate program for nonprofits and NGOs addressing significant social problems, particularly when technology improves reach or efficiency. Do not treat a request for networking equipment as equivalent to a request for program cash.

Cisco Technology Grant Program

This route is designed for practical infrastructure: networking, cybersecurity, connectivity, productivity, scalability, and cost efficiency. Describe the sites, users, devices, connectivity gaps, security risks, and implementation owner. A request that lists equipment without explaining beneficiaries and operational results is harder to evaluate than one that connects each item to a measurable need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cisco Global Impact Cash Grants

The cash-grant route is intended for programs addressing significant social problems. Explain the intervention, target population, geography, delivery partners, technology component, and outcome measures. Cisco lists exclusions that include individuals, research programs, some narrowly defined population or viewpoint programs, and general operating expenses unless those costs are directly tied to the program. Read the current exclusions carefully; do not assume a technology label makes an otherwise ineligible activity eligible.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When Cisco is the better choice

Use the Technology Grant Program when donated networking, security, hardware, software, or services solve the bottleneck. Consider the cash-grant route when the nonprofit is delivering a defined social-impact program and technology is a means to increase reach, quality, or efficiency. Neither route should be presented as unrestricted operating support without written confirmation.

TechSoup: an access and implementation partner

TechSoup helps nonprofits obtain donated or discounted tools and build technology capacity. AWS points to TechSoup as a global nonprofit resource, and Microsoft identifies TechSoup and Tech Impact as partners that help organizations develop technology capacity. TechSoup’s catalog, administrative fees, product limits, and country availability vary, so verify the current listing for the organization’s location.

Use TechSoup when the need is smaller than a major grant, when staff need training or implementation help, or when a provider distributes nonprofit offers through a validation channel. It can complement Microsoft, AWS, or Cisco support, but it does not replace a project-specific grant application.

How to choose among cash, donated technology, and cloud credits

Choose cash when the program must pay for people and delivery

Cash is the most flexible award type, but Cisco’s Global Impact Cash Grants still require a defined social-impact program and may exclude general operating costs. Build a budget that separates direct program expenses, technology, personnel, evaluation, and overhead. Label every overhead line that is directly attributable to the funded program and be prepared to justify it.

Choose donated technology when the bottleneck is equipment or licenses

Donated hardware or software can be valuable, but it also creates installation, maintenance, replacement, and training costs. Include those costs in the total-cost-of-ownership calculation. Confirm warranties, support terms, compatibility with existing systems, and what happens when the grant ends.

Choose cloud credits when usage is the main expense

Cloud credits are most useful after architecture and governance decisions are made. Estimate monthly consumption, identify services that are not credit-eligible, and set budget alerts before deployment. A credit that expires before the system reaches production has less value than a smaller credit paired with a realistic launch plan.

Application preparation: a step-by-step process

  1. Define the problem in operational terms. State who is affected, where they are located, what service is failing or unavailable, and why technology is the appropriate intervention.
  2. Describe the proposed solution. Identify the platform, equipment, software, integrations, data, and implementation stages. Avoid a shopping list without a service model.
  3. Confirm legal status and geography. Record the organization’s registration, tax status, operating countries, and any required validation account. AWS Imagine is explicitly for registered U.S. 501(c) nonprofits, while AWS promotional credits are described as worldwide; Microsoft and Cisco rules vary by country and program.
  4. Set measurable outcomes. Use indicators such as people served, service response time, system availability, successful referrals, training completion, security incidents reduced, or cost per beneficiary. Establish a baseline and a measurement date.
  5. Build a complete budget. Separate grant-funded items from matching funds, staff time, vendor support, security, data migration, training, maintenance, and post-award costs. Do not assume that a product donation pays for implementation.
  6. Assign ownership. Name the executive sponsor, technical lead, procurement contact, data-protection owner, and person responsible for reporting. Small organizations can assign multiple roles to one person, but every responsibility should have an owner.
  7. Prepare evidence. Gather registration documents, governing information, recent financial records, beneficiary data, project plans, policies, and vendor estimates that the live application requests.
  8. Check restrictions before submission. Review exclusions for political activity, research, individuals, general operating expenses, eligible services, geographic reach, and award-period spending.
  9. Validate the live cycle. Recheck opening and closing dates, award categories, credit amounts, product inventory, and country-specific requirements immediately before submitting. Program pages are the authority for current terms.

Program-specific application plans

Microsoft plan

  • Complete nonprofit validation before designing the license mix.
  • Map each requested product to an active user, device, workload, or security control.
  • Set a rollout schedule that can meet the 85% utilization requirement.
  • Document identity, endpoint, backup, and security ownership.
  • Review the country-specific offer because products and quantities can differ by location.

AWS plan

  • Decide whether the organization is pursuing the competitive Imagine Grant, promotional credits, or both.
  • Create a simple architecture diagram and a phased implementation plan.
  • Estimate monthly cloud consumption and identify costs outside credits.
  • Explain data classification, access control, monitoring, incident response, and service continuity.
  • For Imagine, show how technology addresses a major challenge and how outcomes will be measured after deployment.

Cisco plan

  • For the Technology Grant Program, list sites, users, equipment, services, and the operational gap each item resolves.
  • For Global Impact Cash Grants, connect the social problem, intervention, technology component, beneficiaries, and measurable results.
  • Check every exclusion, especially general operating costs, research, individuals, and narrowly defined population or viewpoint activities.
  • Include installation, configuration, training, support, and replacement assumptions.

Implementation and compliance after approval

Approval is the start of delivery, not the end of the project. Create a grant file containing the award letter, eligible-cost rules, procurement records, invoices, asset serial numbers, cloud-account details, user counts, and reporting dates.

For software and identity systems

Use a staged rollout, enforce multifactor authentication where available, remove departed users promptly, and review license utilization monthly. This is especially important for Microsoft awards because the stated 85% threshold affects future eligibility.

For cloud projects

Separate development and production accounts where practical, apply least-privilege access, enable logging, set spending alerts, back up critical data, and document what happens when credits expire. Review monthly usage against the grant budget rather than waiting for the award period to close.

For donated hardware and networking

Record each asset, location, custodian, warranty, configuration, and disposal plan. Schedule firmware updates, security reviews, replacement cycles, and staff training. A donated device that cannot be supported safely should not be deployed merely because it is free.

For cash-funded programs

Track restricted and unrestricted funds separately, retain procurement evidence, measure the agreed outcomes, and report changes in scope promptly. If a cost is partly administrative and partly programmatic, maintain a defensible allocation method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Applying for the wrong award type

A request for unrestricted salaries submitted to a product-donation program is unlikely to fit. Reframe the request around an eligible program, or move to a cash-grant route where the rules permit it.

Requesting more technology than the team can use

Over-requesting licenses or cloud capacity can create utilization problems, recurring costs, and implementation failure. Reduce the first phase to the users, workloads, and sites that can be deployed during the award period.

Ignoring country and entity rules

A nonprofit may operate internationally while only one legal entity qualifies. Identify the applying entity and beneficiaries precisely, then verify the program’s geography rather than relying on a global mission statement.

Confusing credits with cash

Cloud or product credits normally cannot pay rent, unrestricted payroll, or unrelated vendors. Mark each budget line as cash, in-kind, credit-eligible, or organization-funded before submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving security and sustainability until later

Include data protection, access control, support, training, and post-award operating costs in the original plan. If a vendor or provider changes terms, document the impact and request approval before materially changing scope.

Practical decision examples

A 40-person nonprofit replacing email and device management

Microsoft Nonprofits is the natural first route because the need is recurring productivity, identity, endpoint, and security infrastructure. The organization should validate eligibility, size the license request to active users, and create an adoption plan that supports the 85% utilization requirement.

A U.S. nonprofit building a multilingual service portal

AWS Imagine is a potential fit if the organization can show a major challenge, a credible cloud architecture, a delivery team, and measurable improvements for users. Promotional credits may help with infrastructure, but they do not replace staffing, content, security, or accessibility work.

A community organization with unsafe or unreliable network equipment

Cisco’s Technology Grant Program is the relevant route when donated networking, security, hardware, or services directly improve the sites. The request should include a deployment map, support plan, and the number of people or services protected by the upgrade.

A nonprofit expanding a technology-enabled case-management program

Cisco’s Global Impact Cash Grants may be relevant if the program addresses a significant social problem and technology improves reach or efficiency. The application should distinguish direct program delivery from general administration and provide outcome measures.

What to verify before submitting any application

  • Current country and legal-entity eligibility
  • Validation status and required documents
  • Opening and closing dates for the live cycle
  • Whether the award is cash, in-kind technology, or a restricted credit
  • Current award amounts, product quantities, expiration dates, and eligible services
  • Utilization, reporting, procurement, security, and data-handling obligations
  • Restrictions on overhead, research, political activity, individuals, or specific populations
  • Who will implement, support, secure, and sustain the technology after the award

Because these details are volatile, the official program portal should be checked at the point of application rather than relying on an old grant calendar or a previous award letter.
