Start with The Evil Within 2 if you want the clearest connection to Resident Evil‘s creator lineage. Choose Tormented Souls for fixed-perspective mansion-and-hospital puzzles, SIGNALIS for a compact top-down take on classic survival horror, Alien: Isolation for stealth and pursuit, or Directive 8020 for a newer cinematic science-fiction story with branching outcomes.

Quick guide: which Resident Evil-style game fits you?

These games do not all imitate Resident Evil in the same way. One follows the series’ creative lineage, another recreates its fixed-perspective puzzle structure, while the others shift the formula toward top-down psychological horror, stealth, or cinematic science fiction. Use the table to identify the closest match before reading the detailed breakdowns.

Game Best for Structure and emphasis What makes it a good follow-up
The Evil Within 2 Fans who want the strongest creator connection Pure survival-horror lineage associated with Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks It comes from the creator identified by Bethesda as the originator of the seminal Resident Evil series
Tormented Souls Players who miss classic fixed-camera exploration Fixed-perspective mansion-and-hospital adventure with puzzles, combat and exploration Its own description explicitly cites the original Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark as inspirations
SIGNALIS Fans of compact, atmospheric, resource-conscious horror Top-down survival horror with challenging puzzles, nightmarish creatures, psychological horror and cosmic dread PlayStation describes it as a love letter to PS1-era survival horror
Alien: Isolation Players who prefer hiding and escaping to fighting Stealth and evasion built around a persistent Xenomorph threat Its tension comes from surviving an intelligent pursuit rather than clearing rooms of enemies
Directive 8020 Players seeking a contemporary, cinematic science-fiction setting A crew aboard the Cassiopeia hunted by an organism that can mimic its prey, with branching-story tools It extends survival horror into a choice-driven space setting

How to choose a game after Resident Evil

Decide which part of Resident Evil you actually want to preserve. The series combines several traditions that are easy to mistake for one feature: deliberate survival pressure, puzzle-box environments, limited resources, memorable monsters, camera-driven suspense, and a campaign designed for one player. The recommendations above separate those ingredients instead of pretending every game offers the same experience.

  • Creator lineage: The Evil Within 2 is the obvious first stop because Bethesda identifies Shinji Mikami, creator of the seminal Resident Evil series, as the developer behind The Evil Within and Tango Gameworks as the team involved.
  • Classic perspective and puzzles: Tormented Souls most directly modernizes the fixed-perspective adventure format associated with early survival horror.
  • Classic ideas in a different viewpoint: SIGNALIS translates inventory-and-puzzle pressure into a top-down presentation and adds psychological and cosmic horror.
  • Fear through helplessness: Alien: Isolation makes evasion central, so the question is how to stay alive while being hunted, not how to defeat every threat.
  • Branching cinematic suspense: Directive 8020 uses an alien-mimic premise and branching-story tools to push the formula toward science-fiction drama.

The Evil Within 2: the clearest creator-lineage recommendation

Why it is the safest first choice

If “like Resident Evil” means “made by the person most closely associated with its creation,” begin here. Bethesda’s official description says: “Developed by Shinji Mikami — creator of the seminal Resident Evil series — and the talented team at Tango Gameworks, The Evil Within embodies the meaning of pure survival horror.” The same official page places The Evil Within 2 within that series. That is the strongest documented connection in this group.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This does not mean the sequel is a remake, continuation, or mechanical copy of any particular Resident Evil entry. The useful point is authorship: Mikami’s involvement gives the game a direct lineage to the design tradition that shaped modern survival horror. For fans who want a new setting while staying close to that lineage, it is the most defensible recommendation.

What kind of horror to expect

The series is presented as “pure survival horror,” making it the best fit for readers who want a broad mixture of danger, exploration and combat rather than a single gimmick. It belongs in the grotesque action-horror end of this list, whereas SIGNALIS emphasizes melancholy and cosmic dread and Alien: Isolation emphasizes pursuit.

Choose it when…

  • You want the closest documented link to Resident Evil‘s original creator.
  • You prefer a full survival-horror identity rather than a game built primarily around stealth or interactive drama.
  • You are comfortable with a successor in the The Evil Within series instead of a direct Resident Evil title.

Do not choose it solely because…

…you want fixed cameras or a mansion puzzle layout. The available description establishes the creator connection and survival-horror identity, but it does not establish that The Evil Within 2 reproduces the original series’ exact camera system or setting. For those specific features, Tormented Souls is the more precise match.

Tormented Souls: fixed-perspective mansion-and-hospital survival horror

Why it feels closest to early Resident Evil

Tormented Souls is the most explicit modern homage in this selection. Its Steam description says it is “Inspired by the original Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark series” and that it “modernises with a fresh twist on the fixed perspective adventure.” That wording directly answers the request for a PS1-style or fixed-camera alternative.

The setting also matches the mental image many players have when they ask for classic survival horror: exploration through a mansion-and-hospital environment, with rooms that become meaningful as puzzles are solved and routes are understood. The description identifies puzzles, combat and exploration as core activities, and it is explicitly presented as a single-player game.

How its structure serves single-player fans

Fixed perspective changes how you read a room. The camera can conceal an approach, frame an object before you understand its purpose, or make a familiar corridor feel unsafe when you return to it. In a solo game, that controlled viewpoint supports a steady loop: explore, notice an obstacle, search for a clue or item, solve the puzzle, then decide whether the next encounter is worth the risk.

The combination of combat and exploration matters. This is not only an atmospheric walking tour, and it is not described as an action-first shooter. It is a puzzle-led survival-horror adventure in which fighting is one part of navigating the environment.

Choose it when…

  • You specifically want fixed-perspective presentation.
  • You enjoy mansion or hospital exploration organized around puzzles and backtracking.
  • You want the most literal modern homage to the original Resident Evil format.

Its trade-off

The fixed-perspective appeal is also its defining limitation if you prefer modern free-camera control. Select it for the deliberate, authored viewpoint rather than expecting the visual freedom of a contemporary third-person game.

SIGNALIS: top-down classic survival horror with psychological and cosmic dread

What makes it different

SIGNALIS keeps the pressure of classic survival horror but changes the viewpoint and emotional register. PlayStation describes “terrifying secrets, challenging puzzles, and nightmarish creatures in a tense and melancholic experience of cosmic dread and classic psychological survival horror.” PlayStation Blog calls it “a love letter to the classics of PS1-era survival horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill.”

That combination makes it a strong choice for players who value the design ideas behind early Resident Evil more than a specific camera angle. It is top-down rather than fixed-camera, yet it still centers secrets, puzzles, hostile creatures and sustained tension. The result is compact in presentation but broad in tone: personal psychological fear sits alongside cosmic science fiction.

Why the top-down view works

A top-down perspective gives you a clearer map of immediate space while preserving uncertainty about what the next room or clue means. The horror comes less from a camera hiding a corner and more from the accumulation of unanswered questions, dangerous creatures and puzzle pressure. That makes SIGNALIS a useful bridge between retro survival-horror structure and a more modern, melancholic narrative atmosphere.

Choose it when…

  • You want puzzles and classic survival-horror tension without requiring a third-person or fixed-camera presentation.
  • You enjoy psychological horror that expands into cosmic dread.
  • You want a game explicitly framed as a tribute to PS1-era Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

Its trade-off

If your priority is a mansion layout viewed through cinematic fixed cameras, this is not the closest match. Its appeal is the reinterpretation: top-down navigation, a melancholic mood and science-fiction horror rather than a straightforward recreation of a 1990s survival-horror setting.

Alien: Isolation: choose evasion when combat is not the point

The central design difference

Alien: Isolation is the recommendation for players who want to feel hunted. SEGA describes the series’ tension around the deadly Xenomorph and the survival-horror experience established by the original. The key distinction is that survival depends on evasion and stealth more than on killing every threat.

This changes the decision-making loop familiar from combat-heavy horror. Instead of asking whether you have enough ammunition to clear a room, you ask whether moving is safer than hiding, whether a route exposes you, and how long you can remain undetected. The danger is persistent pursuit rather than a sequence of enemies waiting for a conventional fight.

Why it belongs on a Resident Evil alternatives list

The shared ground is pressure: isolation, resource anxiety and the need to make careful choices while afraid. The difference is emphasis. Resident Evil often makes combat a major way to reclaim space; Alien: Isolation makes the space remain dangerous because the threat can continue hunting you.

Choose it when…

  • You prefer stealth, hiding and escape to direct combat.
  • You want a single dominant threat whose pursuit creates ongoing suspense.
  • You are looking for science-fiction survival horror rather than a mansion or hospital homage.

Its trade-off

Players seeking frequent weapon-based encounters or classic room-by-room puzzle progression may find its evasion-first structure less familiar. Pick it for tension generated by pursuit, not for a direct recreation of early Resident Evil mechanics.

Directive 8020: a newer cinematic science-fiction direction

The premise

Bandai Namco describes a crew aboard the Cassiopeia hunted by an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey. The game combines survival gameplay with branching-story tools, placing the horror in a contemporary cinematic science-fiction framework.

The mimic premise creates a different kind of uncertainty from a traditional monster encounter. The threat is not merely something outside the group; it can resemble the people the crew is relying on. That supports suspicion, difficult choices and story branches alongside survival mechanics.

How it compares with the other recommendations

Directive 8020 is not the best substitute for fixed cameras or retro mansion puzzles. Its connection to Resident Evil is broader: it treats survival horror as a framework for danger, investigation and escalating distrust, then moves that framework into space. It is the option to watch if you want the formula to feel current and cinematic rather than nostalgic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when…

  • You want a science-fiction setting centered on a crew under threat.
  • You enjoy stories in which choices can produce different branches.
  • You are interested in an alien antagonist that can mimic its victims.

Its trade-off

The available description emphasizes its cinematic, branching and science-fiction identity, not a fixed-camera or inventory-puzzle homage. Select it for narrative uncertainty and modern presentation rather than for a PS1-style structure.

Detailed comparison by the feature you miss most

If you miss… Start with Why
The creator behind classic Resident Evil The Evil Within 2 Bethesda identifies Shinji Mikami as the creator of the seminal series and places the sequel in that lineage.
Fixed-perspective rooms and mansion-style puzzle exploration Tormented Souls Its description directly cites the original Resident Evil, fixed-perspective adventure design, puzzles, combat and exploration.
Retro survival-horror ideas with a new mood SIGNALIS It is a top-down interpretation framed as a tribute to PS1-era classics, with psychological and cosmic horror.
Being stalked instead of overpowering enemies Alien: Isolation Evasion and stealth are central to surviving the persistent Xenomorph threat.
A cinematic story with science-fiction stakes Directive 8020 A crew faces a mimicking alien organism, and branching-story tools shape the experience.

Recommended play order for different fans

If you want the most direct lineage first

  1. Begin with The Evil Within 2 for the strongest documented creator connection.
  2. Follow with Tormented Souls to experience the fixed-perspective homage.
  3. Move to SIGNALIS for a top-down, psychological and cosmic reinterpretation.
  4. Play Alien: Isolation when you want pursuit and stealth to replace conventional combat.
  5. Finish with Directive 8020 for a branching, cinematic science-fiction approach.

If you only want one game

Choose Tormented Souls for the closest structural match to early Resident Evil. Choose The Evil Within 2 if creator lineage matters more than fixed cameras. Choose SIGNALIS if atmosphere and psychological science fiction are your priorities. Choose Alien: Isolation if being hunted is more appealing than fighting. Choose Directive 8020 if you want the most contemporary cinematic premise and branching-story emphasis.

Buying and platform checks before you purchase

Availability, edition, region, physical stock and current price can change. Check the store listing for your specific console or PC before committing, especially when you want a physical copy. The strongest product searches are “The Evil Within 2 PS4 game,” “SIGNALIS physical edition” and “Tormented Souls,” but a search phrase is not a guarantee that a particular edition is in stock or compatible with your region.

  • Confirm the platform and edition, including whether a listing is new, used or digital.
  • Check the console region for physical releases and downloadable content.
  • Verify that the product is the single-player version or campaign you intend to buy.
  • Compare the current price at publication time rather than relying on an old listing.
  • Read the current product description for language, installation and account requirements.

Bottom line: the best Resident Evil-like game depends on the element you want preserved

For most single-player fans, The Evil Within 2 is the best overall starting point because it has the clearest documented connection to Shinji Mikami, the creator of the seminal Resident Evil series. Tormented Souls is the better answer for fixed-perspective mansion-and-hospital puzzles; SIGNALIS is the strongest compact, top-down alternative; Alien: Isolation is the choice for stealth and relentless pursuit; and Directive 8020 is the route into branching cinematic science-fiction horror.
