If you want another game after Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, start with Green Hell for the closest environmental-survival pressure. Choose Far Cry Primal for prehistoric wildlife and human conflict, The Long Dark for methodical wilderness planning, Subnautica for discovery-led exploration, Valheim for crafting and cooperative building, or The Forest and Sons of the Forest for horror, shelters, traps and hostile inhabitants.
Ancestors is unusual because its central progression is evolutionary rather than equipment-based. You guide an early hominin clan in Africa, experiment to discover useful behaviors, manage natural threats and advance through generations. The recommendations below are not identical substitutes; each preserves a different part of that experience.

3. The Forest: survival horror, shelters and traps

The Forest is the right choice when the vulnerability of Ancestors appeals to you but you want that vulnerability turned into horror. Exploration is tied to finding materials, understanding a threatening island and deciding where a defensible shelter should stand. Construction is not a side activity: walls, traps and camp placement shape how you survive.
What changes from Ancestors
The tone is much darker and the danger is intentionally frightening. Instead of observing a broad African ecosystem while guiding a clan, you are dealing with a survival-horror premise in which hostile inhabitants make familiar-looking terrain feel unsafe. The result is less about evolutionary curiosity and more about securing a position before the next attack.

4. Sons of the Forest: a newer island survival sandbox
Why it fits
Sons of the Forest is built around surviving on an island after a crash. It combines food and hydration management with construction, animal traps and hostile locals. That gives it a useful middle ground: the pressure of a survival simulation, the immediate objective of establishing a base and the fear of enemies who make the island unpredictable.
How to decide between it and The Forest
Choose Sons of the Forest if you specifically want the newer entry’s island setting and an expanded building-and-trap loop. Choose The Forest if the original’s survival-horror identity is the priority. Both move away from Ancestors’ evolutionary timescale, but they add a practical question Ancestors does not emphasize in the same way: how will you construct and defend a place to live?

- You enjoy turning a dangerous island into a working base.
- You want hostile inhabitants and animal traps to influence where and how you build.
5. The Long Dark: deliberate wilderness survival
Why it fits
The Long Dark is for players who remember the careful, exposed feeling of entering unknown territory in Ancestors. Its premise places a pilot in the Canadian wilderness after a crash, with survival beginning immediately. Progress comes from planning around exposure, supplies and the consequences of traveling at the wrong time or with the wrong equipment.

How its rhythm differs
This is a slower and more deliberate wilderness experience than the action-focused choices on this list. The central tension is not building a large settlement or defeating a boss; it is deciding whether the next trip is worth the risk. That makes it a strong fit for players who enjoy preparation, route choice and conserving limited resources.

6. Subnautica: discovery and progression in an alien ocean

How it differs
The game is more technology-driven than evolutionary. Instead of passing learned behaviors through clan generations, you expand your capabilities through resources, habitats and technological progression. The hazards are also defined by an ocean environment, so navigation, depth and unfamiliar aquatic life replace the African landscape and terrestrial wildlife of Ancestors.

- Discovery matters more to you than historical or prehistoric authenticity.

- You prefer a largely solo journey where the environment gradually explains itself.
7. Valheim: crafting, bosses and cooperative building
Why it fits
Valheim is the broadest crafting sandbox in this group. It places exploration and base building in a Viking afterlife, with cooking, crafting, sea travel and dangerous new continents. Procedural exploration keeps the world open-ended, while boss progression gives expeditions a clear long-term purpose.

Valheim is less realistic and less biologically focused than Ancestors. Its progression is built around equipment, crafted infrastructure and combat milestones rather than evolutionary learning. How to choose the right follow-up
If experimentation is the priority
Pick Subnautica for discovery that unlocks technology, or Green Hell for learning how a severe natural environment affects your body and supplies. The Long Dark is the alternative when experimentation means testing routes, timing and preparation rather than collecting new technology.
If prehistoric atmosphere is the priority
Far Cry Primal is the direct thematic choice. It retains prehistoric wildlife and human-group conflict while accepting a more action-led structure than Ancestors.
If you want a base you can defend
Choose The Forest for survival horror, Sons of the Forest for its island survival systems and newer building focus, or Valheim if you want construction to support long-term crafting, exploration and cooperative play.
If environmental severity is the priority
Green Hell applies pressure through jungle hazards and resource management. The Long Dark applies it through exposure, scarcity and deliberate wilderness planning. Both are stronger matches for survival discipline than for prehistoric storytelling.
If you want the largest change of setting
Subnautica moves survival into an alien ocean, while Valheim turns it into a procedural Viking afterlife. Choose Subnautica for discovery and technology; choose Valheim for crafting, combat, bosses and shared construction.
What to expect before starting
- Do not expect a one-to-one replacement. Ancestors combines third-person exploration, clan management and evolutionary progression in a way none of these games reproduces completely.
- Check the current edition and platform listing. Availability, prices and edition names can change by region and over time.
- Decide whether you want directed goals or a sandbox. Far Cry Primal is more action-directed; Green Hell and The Long Dark emphasize survival pressure; Subnautica rewards discovery; Valheim is built around open crafting and boss progression.
- Decide whether multiplayer matters. Valheim has the clearest cooperative-building emphasis, while the other recommendations are primarily designed around individual survival, even when a cooperative mode or setup may be available.
