There isn’t one best streaming device for every household. For an easy, platform-neutral 4K setup, consider the Roku Streaming Stick 4K; for an Apple-focused home, the Apple TV 4K; and for Alexa integration, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen). The Onn 4K Pro is a strong budget benchmark in Consumer Reports’ 2026 ratings, while buyers who need Ethernet or USB playback should look at the Roku Ultra.
How do the leading streaming devices compare?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists the following overall scores and approximate retail prices. Prices can change with discounts and availability, and the scores reflect Consumer Reports’ testing—not a guarantee that one device will suit every household.

| Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) | 74 | $140 |

Source for all scores and approximate prices: Consumer Reports, 2026 Buying Guide. Consumer Reports says its overall score is based on all tests; picture quality includes image clarity, color accuracy and contrast of streaming video, while ease of use reflects day-to-day use. Its score is one useful comparison, not a substitute for matching the device to your apps, ecosystem and connection needs.
Which streaming device should you choose?
For a simple, platform-neutral 4K setup: Roku Streaming Stick 4K
Roku is a sensible starting point if you want a straightforward interface without choosing a device primarily for Alexa, Google or Apple integration. Roku documents Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support across its current players. If you need wired networking or local USB media playback, however, consider the Roku Ultra rather than assuming a stick has those connections.

For an Apple-focused household: Apple TV 4K (128GB, 2022)
The Apple TV 4K is the premium pick for households already using Apple devices and services. It uses Apple’s App Store and Siri. Its place in the comparison is not as a budget choice: Consumer Reports lists it at the top end of the mainstream-device price range in its 2026 guide.
For Alexa integration: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen)
Choose the 4K Max if Alexa integration and the Fire TV ecosystem matter to you. Keep the generation in mind: Amazon’s official comparison table lists the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) separately from the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023), as well as the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) and Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025). These are distinct model names, not interchangeable labels. PCWorld’s 2026 guide describes Fire TV sticks as good values when discounted, but says their menus can be difficult to navigate and advertising-heavy; that is PCWorld’s editorial assessment, not a universal test result.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
For a budget pick: Onn 4K Pro Streaming Device
The Onn 4K Pro is the highest-scoring device in Consumer Reports’ listed group, at an approximate $50 retail price in its 2026 guide. It is a Walmart/Onn product, so check that its availability and app selection work for your location and services before buying.
For Google TV: Google TV Streamer (4K)
The Google TV Streamer is the option to consider if you want Google TV and its Google Play ecosystem. Consumer Reports lists it at an approximate $100 and an overall score of 69. PCWorld’s 2026 guide says it offers limited differentiation from cheaper options; weigh that editorial view against your preference for Google’s platform and the features you actually need.

For Ethernet, USB playback or extra connectivity: Roku Ultra
Roku describes the Ultra as its fastest player and lists 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB and a Voice Remote Pro. PCWorld also highlights its Ethernet, USB media playback and Bluetooth. This is the more relevant Roku choice if wired networking or connecting local media matters more than a compact stick.
For streaming plus clearer TV audio: Roku Streambar SE
Roku positions the Streambar SE as a 2-in-1 device that combines 4K streaming with clearer TV audio. It is worth considering when improving the sound from a television is part of the purchase, rather than buying a streaming player alone.

What do the ratings and prices tell you?
The Consumer Reports list spans approximately $40 to $150 for the devices shown. The figures are approximate retail prices in its 2026 Buying Guide, not guaranteed live prices, so a sale can change the value comparison. For example, a discounted Fire TV stick may be more attractive than its listed price suggests, while a higher score does not automatically make a device the better fit if you prefer another platform or need a particular connection.
Use the overall score as a broad test-based reference, then prioritize the factors that change your daily experience: interface preference, ecosystem, picture and audio format support, and connectivity. For buyers who rarely use local media and connect over Wi-Fi, a stick may be enough; people who need Ethernet or USB should compare a full-size player such as Roku Ultra.

Can a streaming device replace a cable box?
A streaming player can serve as the main way to watch live channels, news, sports and on-demand entertainment over the internet instead of a cable or satellite box, as Roku explains for its players. It does not automatically include every paid channel. You still need the relevant apps or subscriptions, and service availability varies by geography.
