Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is the closest replacement for Total War: SHOGUN 2 if you want a historical campaign map followed by real-time battles. Choose Crusader Kings III for intrigue and dynasties, Civilization VI for accessible turn-based empire building, Old World for ancient history with living family lines, Europa Universalis for nation-scale historical management, or Endless Legend 2 for asymmetric science-fantasy exploration.

The current reference release is Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition, not a separate “Shogun 2 Remake.” SEGA announced that edition for October 13, 2026, with the original game and downloadable campaigns plus modern technical upgrades. The alternatives below are organized by the part of Shogun 2 you want to keep, because no single game reproduces its Japanese setting, campaign layer and hands-on battles at the same time.

What makes Shogun 2 difficult to replace?

Shogun 2’s defining loop has two connected layers. On the campaign map, you expand a clan, manage territory and make strategic decisions in turn-based time. When armies meet, you take direct control in a real-time battlefield, positioning formations and issuing orders during the engagement. That combination creates a distinctive rhythm: long-term planning determines where a battle happens, while tactical decisions determine whether the army survives it.

The Complete Edition packages the base Japanese historical grand-strategy game with its additional campaigns, including Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. The announced October 13, 2026 release also adds improved visuals, interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays, modernized controls, more than 50 newly playable factions, integrated Mod.io support, a 64-bit upgrade, ultrawide support and colourblind options. Those changes improve access to the same core formula; they do not turn the game into a different genre.

Use the recommendations below according to the feature you value most. A game can be an excellent substitute while deliberately omitting real-time tactical battles, historical authenticity or the focused clan-scale campaign.

The best games like Shogun 2, ranked by what they preserve

1. Total War: THREE KINGDOMS — the closest overall substitute

Choose Total War: THREE KINGDOMS first if your favorite part of Shogun 2 is the complete Total War rhythm: develop a realm on a strategic map, negotiate with neighboring powers, move armies into position and then fight the engagement in real time. It is the strongest mechanical match in this list because it keeps both layers rather than replacing battlefield control with an abstract result.

The setting moves from Sengoku Japan to China’s Three Kingdoms period. Campaigns are shaped by distinctive leaders and relationships, with diplomacy, trade and personal loyalties influencing the balance of power. That character emphasis changes the tone. Shogun 2’s clans and generals feel comparatively grounded in a focused national conflict, whereas Three Kingdoms gives major figures a more prominent, personality-driven role in the campaign and on the battlefield.

This is the best choice for a player who wants another historical Total War campaign without learning an entirely different interface philosophy. You still need to think about expansion, diplomacy, army composition and timing, but the surrounding political drama is more character-centered than in Shogun 2.

  • Pick it if: real-time battles and a turn-based empire map are non-negotiable.
  • Expect: a Chinese civil-war setting, stronger hero presentation and relationship systems.
  • Look elsewhere if: you specifically want Japanese clans or a less character-led campaign.

2. Crusader Kings III — for politics, dynasties and emergent stories

Crusader Kings III is the right substitute when Shogun 2’s diplomacy, succession problems and rival relationships matter more to you than arranging units on a battlefield. You play a medieval noble and guide a dynasty through marriages, inheritance, personal ambitions, intrigue and war. The central question is not simply how to conquer a province, but how to keep a family and its political network intact across generations.

Its role-playing structure produces campaigns that are difficult to script in advance. A ruler’s lifestyle, allies, rivals, spouse, children and succession position can redirect the entire plan. A successful war may create a stronger realm, while an unexpected death or inheritance dispute can split it. These stories emerge from the interaction of character decisions and systems rather than from a fixed narrative path.

The compromise is fundamental: battles are abstracted at the strategic level. You can prepare armies, choose targets and manage the political consequences of conflict, but you do not take direct control of formations in a real-time engagement. If your best Shogun 2 memories involve manipulating terrain, flanking an enemy line or timing a charge, Crusader Kings III will not reproduce them.

  • Pick it if: succession, marriages, intrigue and character-driven decisions are your priority.
  • Expect: a medieval setting and a grand-strategy role-playing experience.
  • Look elsewhere if: tactical battlefield control is the reason you play Total War.

3. Civilization VI — for accessible turn-based empire building

Civilization VI is the most approachable alternative for players who enjoy building a state over many turns and want a clear, readable 4X structure. Its district system encourages you to spread cities into specialized areas, making physical planning part of the strategic puzzle. Where you place a district can affect the value of surrounding terrain and the direction of a city’s development.

Its expansions add systems such as Golden Ages, Dark Ages, climate change and environmental disasters. These mechanics make a long campaign evolve rather than simply scale upward: a prosperous era can unlock new possibilities, while a difficult era forces a change in priorities. Environmental effects also make geography and industrial development consequential over time.

Combat remains turn-based and tile-based. You choose units, positions and targets, but there is no real-time battlefield phase after an army engages. That makes Civilization VI easier to pause, learn and play in short sessions, while sacrificing the immediacy and formation control that define Total War.

  • Expect: a broad historical sweep rather than one tightly bounded era or country.
  • Look elsewhere if: you want armies to collide in a separate real-time tactical map.

4. Old World — for antiquity and living rulers

Old World occupies the middle ground between Civilization-style empire management and Crusader Kings-style family drama. It remains in antiquity and makes the ruler an active part of the campaign. Leaders marry, have children and die; heirs, courtiers, spouses and rivals then carry the consequences into later turns.

That continuity gives your empire a human timeline. A policy choice is also a decision about the ruler who makes it, the heir who may inherit it and the relationships that can support or undermine it. Events and characters add uncertainty without abandoning the structured, turn-based 4X framework.

Old World is especially appealing if you want historical atmosphere and dynastic succession but prefer a more bounded ancient setting than the much longer timeline of a nation-scale grand-strategy game. Its battles are still turn-based rather than Total War-style real-time encounters, so the attraction is the interaction of family, state and resources.

  • Pick it if: you want antiquity, dynastic continuity and event-driven decisions in one campaign.
  • Expect: a focused historical period and a turn-based 4X ruleset.
  • Look elsewhere if: you need direct control over battlefield formations.

5. Europa Universalis — for nation-level historical breadth

Europa Universalis is the choice for readers who want to manage a country across a wide historical timeline rather than command one clan in a concentrated regional struggle. The campaign runs from the end of the Middle Ages into the 1800s, covering political decisions, economics, armies, diplomacy and imperial expansion at the level of the state.

This scale changes the decisions you make. Trade routes, alliances, internal politics and the cost of maintaining armed forces can matter as much as the outcome of a single war. You are shaping institutions and international relationships over centuries, so a short-term victory may be harmful if it destabilizes the economy or creates an unsustainable diplomatic situation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Combat is handled strategically. You direct armies and choose when and where to fight, but the game does not transition into a Total War battlefield where you issue formation orders in real time. The learning curve is also heavier because more systems operate simultaneously. Players who enjoy understanding interconnected rules will find depth; players looking for a quick campaign may find the breadth demanding.

  • Pick it if: diplomacy, trade, statecraft and a long historical sandbox are more important than tactical battles.
  • Expect: nation-scale management from the late medieval period into the 1800s.
  • Look elsewhere if: your preferred viewpoint is a single clan and its armies on the battlefield.

6. Endless Legend 2 — for exploration and asymmetric factions

Endless Legend 2 is the deliberate genre change in this list. It is a science-fantasy 4X sequel built around imaginative factions, exploration and a world shaped by its Tidefall system. As oceans recede, land and resources are revealed, changing the strategic value of regions during the campaign.

That shifting geography gives exploration a stronger role than it has in a historically grounded map. Faction asymmetry also matters: the way you expand, use resources and respond to the map depends more heavily on the identity and abilities of the faction you select. The result is a campaign about discovering possibilities and adapting to an unfamiliar world.

Endless Legend 2 does not reproduce Shogun 2’s historical authenticity, Japanese politics or real-time battles. Choose it when you want the strategic planning and replayability of a 4X game but are ready to trade historical armies for unusual factions and a changing science-fantasy environment.

  • Pick it if: exploration, asymmetric factions and a map that changes over time appeal to you.
  • Expect: a turn-based science-fantasy campaign rather than historical grand strategy.
  • Look elsewhere if: authenticity or real-time tactical combat is essential.

Historical authenticity versus imaginative settings

If authenticity is your first filter, stay with the historical options: Three Kingdoms, Crusader Kings III, Civilization VI, Old World and Europa Universalis. They differ in period and scale, but each uses a recognizable historical framework. Three Kingdoms is the closest thematic cousin to a focused historical Total War campaign, while Old World is the most concentrated around antiquity and Europa Universalis is the broadest in timeline and geography.

Endless Legend 2 is for readers who value systems over historical fidelity. Its science-fantasy setting makes unusual factions and a changing map possible, but it cannot answer a desire for Sengoku-era politics or historically grounded armies. Treat it as a strategic alternative, not a setting substitute.

Real-time battles versus strategic combat

This is the most important decision before buying or starting another game. Only Three Kingdoms in this list keeps the Total War handoff from campaign map to real-time battlefield. Crusader Kings III and Europa Universalis let you plan wars at the strategic level, while Civilization VI and Old World resolve conflict through turn-based systems. Endless Legend 2 also remains a turn-based 4X experience.

Choose abstract or turn-based combat if you prefer uninterrupted planning, pausing between decisions and campaigns that emphasize diplomacy, research or development. Choose Three Kingdoms if the satisfaction comes from turning a favorable campaign position into a tactical victory through movement, formations and timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessibility and system complexity

Civilization VI offers the clearest entry point for players who want a conventional turn-based 4X structure. Three Kingdoms will feel most familiar to existing Total War players because its campaign and battle layers follow the same broad rhythm. Old World adds more character and event interactions without abandoning turn-based planning.

Crusader Kings III and Europa Universalis reward patience with deeper political and institutional systems. Their complexity is not a flaw, but it changes what “progress” means: success may be preserving a dynasty, maintaining alliances or building a stable state rather than winning every battle. Endless Legend 2 introduces complexity through asymmetric factions and a changing environment instead of historical administration.

Which game should you play first?

  1. Start with Total War: THREE KINGDOMS if you want the least disruptive move from Shogun 2 and still require real-time battles.
  2. Start with Crusader Kings III if the stories you remember most involve diplomacy, betrayal, marriage, inheritance or succession.
  3. Start with Civilization VI if you want an approachable campaign built around cities, technology and long-term development.
  4. Start with Old World if you want a smaller historical frame and a dynasty that changes as rulers live and die.
  5. Start with Europa Universalis if you want to zoom out from one clan and manage a nation across centuries.
  6. Start with Endless Legend 2 if you are happy to leave history behind for exploration, asymmetric factions and a science-fantasy map.

Bottom line

For a direct Shogun 2 replacement, choose Total War: THREE KINGDOMS. It is the only recommendation here that keeps both the turn-based campaign and real-time tactical battles. Choose one of the other five when your real priority is different: dynastic storytelling in Crusader Kings III, accessible 4X growth in Civilization VI, ancient family continuity in Old World, nation-scale history in Europa Universalis, or imaginative exploration in Endless Legend 2.
