Octopath Traveler II is the closest match if you want another ensemble RPG with HD-2D visuals, character-specific Path Actions, job development, and tactical Break and Boost battles. For a different emphasis, choose Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster for job-driven combat planning, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for a classic fantasy quest, or Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster for a more retro take on job customization. Octopath Traveler 0 is another series entry, focused on a created hero and rebuilding a hometown.

Which Switch RPG is most like Octopath Traveler?

Octopath Traveler II is the strongest fit for the first game’s particular combination of eight protagonists, HD-2D presentation, Path Actions, job and skill development, and Break and Boost combat. It follows eight new travelers in Solistia, so it offers a new cast and setting while retaining the series’ recognizable structure.

There are two distinct versions to consider: the original Switch edition and a Switch 2 edition. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 version as playable only on Switch 2, and saves are not compatible between the two versions. Check the edition shown on the store or box before buying, especially if you expect to move a save between consoles.

Octopath Traveler 0 Player authorship and rebuilding Create the protagonist; restore a hometown in a story of restoration and retribution in Orsterra Path Actions and town building Switch 2 edition is not compatible with original Switch; saves can transfer from Switch to Switch 2, not the reverse. Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster Strategic turn-based battles and jobs Tiz and Agnès seek to close the Great Chasm and free the crystals Brave and Default commands; more than 20 jobs Switch 2 release, June 5, 2025. Nintendo listing
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake A classic party-led fantasy quest Ortega’s child sets out to defeat Baramos; first chronologically in the Erdrick Trilogy HD-2D, turn-based battles, party skills, and a vast world Switch version runs on Switch 2 and has a free update with graphics and frame-rate/graphics priority options. Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster An older-school job system Four adventurers are chosen by crystals 2D pixel art and job changing; optional boosts include disabling random encounters and adjusting experience gain Switch version is supported on Switch 2. Nintendo listing

Octopath Traveler 0: another series entry, with a different focus

Octopath Traveler 0 is the direct series alternative if you want to shape the protagonist yourself and build up a hometown. Its Orsterra story centers on restoration and retribution, and it includes Path Actions. Its player-created lead and town-building emphasis distinguish it from the eight-traveler setup that defines Octopath Traveler II.

FINAL FANTASY I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition - 2024 (NSW)

  • These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
  • The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
  • Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
  • Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Nintendo lists a Switch version and a separate Switch 2 edition. The Switch 2 edition cannot be played on the original Switch. Save transfer is supported from Switch to Switch 2, but not from Switch 2 back to Switch. Confirm which version you are purchasing and which direction you need to move a save.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster: jobs and battle decisions

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster is the better match when the appeal of Octopath’s battles lies in planning turns and developing characters, rather than following several protagonists. Nintendo describes its combat as featuring the Brave and Default commands and more than 20 jobs. Brave spends BP to take extra actions; Default improves defense while building BP for later turns. The story follows Tiz and Agnès as they work to close the Great Chasm and free the crystals.

The HD Remaster released for Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo. Square Enix describes Bravely Default as a point of genesis for the Octopath Traveler series. A physical Game-Key Card edition is listed by Square Enix’s Asia news portal; it requires an internet download for the full game, so the card itself is not a complete on-card copy. Physical availability and edition details can vary by territory. Square Enix physical-edition information.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: a classic quest in HD-2D

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake suits players who want a traditional fantasy journey rather than Octopath’s ensemble structure. You follow the child of Ortega on a quest to defeat Baramos. It is the first game chronologically in the Erdrick Trilogy and combines HD-2D visuals with turn-based battles, party skills, and a broad world to explore.

Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster: a more retro job-based option

Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster is the pick if you want a classic 2D presentation and job changing rather than Octopath’s HD-2D style and character-specific actions. Nintendo describes it as a pixel remaster of the 1990 game, following four adventurers chosen by crystals. Optional adjustments let you turn off random encounters and change experience gain, useful if you prefer less interruption or want to tune progression.

  • Octopath Traveler II: Nintendo lists separate Switch and Switch 2 versions. The Switch 2 edition is Switch 2-only, and saves do not work across the two versions.
  • Octopath Traveler 0: Nintendo lists a separate Switch 2 edition; save migration works from Switch to Switch 2 only.
  • Dragon Quest III: The Switch version runs on Switch 2. Check the contents of any Erdrick Trilogy Collection rather than assuming the Switch and Switch 2 bundles are identical.
  • Bravely Default physical card: The identified physical edition is a Game-Key Card and needs an internet download to access the full game; verify regional product details before purchase.
  • Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster: The Switch version is listed as supported on Switch 2.
