For smoother Half-Life: Alyx, start with SteamVR’s Settings > Video > Render Resolution > Auto, then lower render resolution only if gameplay still stutters. If you use a Valve Index and the GPU appears overloaded, try 90Hz. There is no universal ideal preset: tune the settings against performance in an actual gameplay scene on your headset and PC.
Start by checking what is causing the slowdown
Before lowering image quality, rule out problems that can look like a graphics bottleneck. Valve recommends checking that your NVIDIA or AMD graphics drivers are current, closing resource-heavy background applications, and seeing whether another application is using dedicated GPU memory. Poor VR tracking can also feel like low frame rate, so confirm that your headset tracking is stable.
Half-Life: Alyx automatically benchmarks the CPU and GPU and checks available system memory the first time it launches or after hardware changes. It uses that information to choose initial graphics settings; those defaults are a starting point, not a guarantee of smooth performance in every scene or on every headset. Valve’s performance tips explain these checks and the available adjustments.
Set SteamVR render resolution
- Open SteamVR and select Settings > Video > Render Resolution.
- Choose Auto if it is not already selected. Valve recommends Auto as the baseline.
- Test a gameplay scene. If performance improves but still falls short, lower render resolution further in small steps until the game runs smoothly without sacrificing more clarity than necessary.
Lower render resolution reduces the work the GPU has to do, but it also makes the image less sharp. The right balance depends on your PC and headset; Valve does not specify a universal resolution percentage.

When to lower refresh rate
If you are using a Valve Index and frame-rate lag appears to come from an overtaxed GPU, Valve suggests trying 90Hz in SteamVR under Settings > General > Refresh Rate. Treat 90Hz as a troubleshooting option for that situation, not a target for all headsets or systems. Valve says the Index can run Alyx at up to 144Hz, but higher refresh rates can demand more from the PC.
Valve gives an 8-core CPU paired with a 12GB GPU as an example of hardware that complex VR gameplay can keep fully busy at up to 144Hz. That is a load example, not a minimum requirement, a recommendation for every player, or a benchmark result that predicts performance on other systems. Valve’s support page provides this context.

Tune the game’s fidelity and texture quality separately
- While playing Half-Life: Alyx, open Settings > Performance.
- Use the low-fidelity preset as a diagnostic if performance is worse than expected. If that helps, raise fidelity gradually to find the highest level your system handles smoothly.
- Adjust Texture Quality separately from overall fidelity. If needed, lower texture quality, then work upward while checking performance.
- Select the gear icon in the lower-left corner to open advanced performance settings.
Overall fidelity and texture quality are distinct controls, so changing one does not amount to a complete adjustment of the other. Make one change at a time; that makes it easier to identify which setting affects performance on your system.

Valve identifies gameplay as the best place to test performance, and the settings can be adjusted while you play. Use a representative scene, give each change a moment to take effect, and compare how smoothly it runs and how clear the image looks. A main-menu impression alone may not reflect the demands of actual VR gameplay.
