Before starting a large Steam download, check the download speed cap, put the game in the queue where you want it, and confirm the chosen library has enough free space. These settings help manage bandwidth, update timing and storage; none guarantees a faster internet connection.
1. Check Steam’s download speed limit
In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and inspect Limit Download Speed. If it is enabled with a low cap and you want Steam to use more of your connection, raise the limit or turn it off. Keep a cap if other people or devices need a share of the connection. Steam describes the control as a way to limit bandwidth or address connection problems caused by downloads; it does not prescribe one ideal rate for everyone. Check the units before comparing Steam’s rate with your internet plan. Steam may display transfer speeds in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. MB/s and Mbps are not interchangeable.
2. Put the game in the right place in the download queue
Open Steam’s Downloads manager to see active and queued downloads. If updates are ahead of the game you want to install, reorder the queue and move the game up. Queue order controls which queued work Steam handles first; it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your connection. 3. Keep automatic updates from competing at the wrong time
Steam provides a daily time period for automatic game updates and per-game update preferences, including Update only when I launch it. Use these options if background updates could compete with the large download or with other people using the connection. The schedule applies to automatic updates, not downloads you start manually. A pending update may also be required when you launch its game, so these preferences are not a way to guarantee that all Steam network activity stops. See Steam’s download and update guidance.
4. Confirm the library folder and available space
Before you start, select a Steam library folder on a drive with enough free space for the game. Steam supports library folders on multiple drives and lets you choose where a new game is installed. Check the game’s Steam store listing and the drive’s current free space rather than assuming a particular drive capacity will be sufficient.

Steam also allows an existing installation to be moved between library folders without downloading the game again. Its guidance says external hard drives are not recommended for Steam or its games because of potential performance issues and unexpected disconnections; if an external drive causes problems, Steam advises using an internal drive. Steam Support: Installed games are appearing as uninstalled.
5. Choose whether downloads should continue while you play
Steam pauses downloads by default when you launch a game. If you want the large download to continue during play, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Continuing the download can compete with gameplay for network capacity. If that affects play or other network use, set a download speed limit instead. Steam explains the behavior and setting in Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

Should you clear Steam’s download cache first?
No—not as a routine speed tweak. Steam recommends Clear Download Cache as a troubleshooting option when a game will not download or start, not as a general way to accelerate downloads. Clearing the cache leaves installed games unaffected, but you will need to sign in to Steam again. See Steam Support’s download guidance.

Choose settings for your situation
