MangoHud is the closest Linux replacement for Steam’s in-game performance monitor. It overlays FPS, frame time, CPU and GPU load, temperatures, RAM, VRAM and related telemetry in Vulkan and OpenGL games, including many titles launched through Proton. Add mangohud %command% to a Steam game’s launch options to test it. If you want a graphical configuration tool instead of editing text files, use GOverlay to create MangoHud profiles and Steam-ready launch commands.
Steam’s own performance monitor remains useful, but Valve notes that its full metric set was first available on Windows and that some metrics are unsupported on other operating systems. MangoHud gives Linux users explicit cross-API coverage and deeper control over what appears on screen. This guide explains which option fits each use case, how to set it up, and what to check when an overlay does not appear.
Which Linux Steam overlay should you choose?
Choose based on whether you need an overlay engine, a graphical editor, or only a minimal diagnostic display.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Option | Best for | Graphics APIs or scope | Configuration | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MangoHud | FPS, frame-time and hardware telemetry in Steam, Proton and standalone games | Vulkan and OpenGL | Launch option, environment variables and configuration file | Setup and compatibility can vary by game, driver, session and package format |
| GOverlay | Readers who want a GUI and separate settings for different games | Configures MangoHud and other Linux gaming layers | Qt6 interface with per-game profiles and generated commands | It is a frontend; MangoHud still supplies the main telemetry overlay |
| Mesa Vulkan overlay | Advanced users needing a small Vulkan diagnostic display | Vulkan on Mesa drivers | Driver-specific settings | Not established as a complete Vulkan-and-OpenGL Steam replacement |
| GPU-vendor panels or desktop monitors | Additional system-wide monitoring outside a game | Depends on the vendor or desktop | Separate application or panel | Usually lacks the same per-frame, in-game workflow |
For most Linux gamers, install MangoHud first. Add GOverlay only if you prefer visual controls, maintain multiple profiles, or regularly switch between overlay tools.

What Steam’s own performance monitor provides
Steam’s performance monitor is designed to show how a game is running and what load it places on the system. Valve describes support for FPS, CPU, GPU and system-RAM information. The available metric set is platform-dependent: Valve initially made the complete set available on Windows and documents that some metrics are not supported on other operating systems.
That qualification matters on Linux. A counter visible in one Steam client or game may be absent in another, and a Proton title can expose different information from a native Linux build. Steam’s monitor is therefore a convenient baseline, not a guarantee of identical telemetry across every Linux game.
MangoHud: the primary Steam overlay alternative
What MangoHud displays
MangoHud is an open-source Vulkan and OpenGL overlay for monitoring FPS, frame time, temperatures, CPU and GPU load, memory use and other runtime values. Its frame-time information is particularly useful when average FPS looks acceptable but motion still feels uneven: a frame-time graph or percentile readout can reveal spikes that a single FPS number hides.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can choose which values are shown, where the HUD is positioned, how large it is, and whether it should log telemetry. A minimal layout can show only FPS and frame time; a diagnostic layout can add clocks, temperatures, utilization and memory figures. The overlay is rendered in the game, so you do not need to alt-tab to a separate monitor window.
Why it works well with Steam and Proton
MangoHud supports both Vulkan and OpenGL, covering native Linux games as well as many Windows games running through Proton. The same launch-option pattern works per game in Steam, while a standalone application can be started with the documented mangohud /path/to/app form. When using gamescope, the project documents the mangoapp path instead of the ordinary command.

Coverage is not identical in every title. A game can use a different graphics API than expected, a driver can restrict available counters, and a compatibility layer can change how an overlay is injected. Treat the launch option as the first test, then identify the API and package architecture if the HUD does not appear.
Install MangoHud on your Linux distribution
MangoHud is available through distribution packages and Flatpak routes documented by the project. The exact package name and installation command depend on your distribution, so use the package source that matches your system rather than copying a command intended for another release.
- Open your distribution’s package manager and install MangoHud from its native repository when available.
- If you use a Flatpak-based setup, install the Flatpak build and apply the project’s documented permission or override for Flatpak Steam.
- On a 64-bit distribution, install the matching 32-bit MangoHud package when you run 32-bit games and your distribution splits 32-bit libraries into a separate package.
- Restart Steam after installation if the client was already running, so the launch environment is refreshed.
A 32-bit game can fail to show the overlay even when the 64-bit package is installed correctly. This is an architecture issue, not evidence that MangoHud cannot monitor the game.
Enable MangoHud in a Steam game
Per-game launch option
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab and find Launch Options.
- Enter
mangohud %command%exactly, including the percent signs. - Close the properties window and start the game.
The %command% token tells Steam to place the game’s normal executable after MangoHud. Do not replace it with the game name. To disable the overlay for that title, remove the launch option and start the game again.
Standalone applications and gamescope
For a program started outside Steam, use the project’s documented pattern mangohud /path/to/app, replacing the path with the application’s executable. Gamescope uses the mangoapp route documented by MangoHud rather than assuming that the Steam launch-option form will be sufficient. This distinction is useful when a title is launched through a separate compositor or a custom script.

Configure the information shown on screen
MangoHud can be configured with its documented settings and configuration file. Begin with the default overlay, then remove values that distract you while playing. A practical troubleshooting layout usually includes FPS, frame time, GPU utilization, GPU temperature, CPU utilization and RAM or VRAM use. Once the issue is understood, switch to a smaller HUD for normal play.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- FPS: Shows the delivered frame rate, useful for checking a cap or comparing settings.
- Frame time: Exposes pacing; spikes can indicate stutter even when the FPS average is high.
- GPU load and temperature: Helps distinguish a graphics-limited game from one waiting on another component.
- CPU load and temperature: Useful when one or more CPU threads limit performance or temperatures trigger clock reductions.
- RAM and VRAM: Helps identify memory pressure, texture-setting problems and paging.
- Logging: Records telemetry for later inspection instead of relying on a screenshot or a momentary reading.
Do not treat any single utilization value as a verdict. A game can be CPU-limited while total CPU usage appears moderate if one thread is saturated, and a frame-time spike can have a short-lived cause that disappears before you inspect the HUD. Use several related readings and reproduce the issue consistently.
GOverlay: a graphical way to manage MangoHud
What GOverlay adds
GOverlay is a Qt6 graphical frontend, not a second telemetry engine. It configures MangoHud and can also manage other Linux gaming layers, including vkBasalt, vkSumi, OptiScaler and Proton environment tweaks. Debian’s package documentation also lists MangoHud, vkBasalt and ReplaySorcery among the overlay tools it can support.
Its main advantage is reducing the need to remember configuration keys or edit MangoHud.conf manually. You select metrics and presentation choices in the interface, then save the resulting configuration.
Per-game profiles and Steam commands
GOverlay’s per-game mode creates configuration files and a launch command ready to paste into Steam. This is useful when one game needs a sparse FPS counter while another needs temperatures, frame-time graphs or logging. Keeping profiles separate also prevents an experimental setting from changing every game on the system.

- Install GOverlay using the package route appropriate for your distribution.
- Open the application and select MangoHud as the overlay you want to configure.
- Choose the metrics, layout and other options for the game.
- Use the per-game function to save the profile and generate its Steam-ready launch command.
- Open the game’s Steam Properties, paste the generated command into Launch Options, and start the game.
Use GOverlay when a GUI materially improves your workflow. If you only need the default HUD in one or two games, the direct mangohud %command% option is faster and has fewer moving parts.
Mesa’s overlay and vendor monitoring tools
Mesa Vulkan overlay
Mesa’s Vulkan overlay can provide a minimal diagnostic display for Vulkan applications. It is best treated as an advanced, driver-specific fallback rather than a general Steam-overlay replacement. The available documentation does not establish equivalent current coverage for both Vulkan and OpenGL, nor the same configuration depth and logging workflow as MangoHud.
GPU-vendor panels and desktop monitors
Vendor panels and desktop system monitors can complement an in-game HUD. They are useful for watching system-wide temperatures, clocks or utilization while testing, but they do not automatically provide the same per-frame overlay inside each game. You may need to alt-tab, move a monitor window, or configure a separate on-screen display.
When comparing these tools, check five things: graphics-API coverage, metric depth, frame-time visualization, per-game profiles, and behavior with Steam Flatpak and Proton. Ease of toggling also matters if you only want telemetry while diagnosing a problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA reliable setup and test workflow
- Identify the game type. Note whether it is native Linux or running through Proton, and whether it is likely to be 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the correct MangoHud packages. Use your distribution’s package route or the documented Flatpak route; add the 32-bit package when required.
- Start with the smallest test. Put
mangohud %command%in that game’s Steam launch options without adding other tweaks. - Launch a repeatable scene. Use the same menu, benchmark, save file or training area so readings can be compared.
- Confirm the HUD. Check that FPS and frame time appear before adding more metrics.
- Add diagnostic values. Enable GPU, CPU, temperature and memory readings only when you need them.
- Save a profile. If settings differ by game, use GOverlay’s per-game mode or separate MangoHud configuration files.
- Remove test changes. After diagnosing a problem, delete unnecessary launch options or disable logging to return to a clean baseline.
Troubleshoot an overlay that does not appear
The game starts but there is no HUD
- Recheck the launch option spelling: it should contain
mangohud %command%, not a replacement for%command%. - Determine whether the game uses Vulkan or OpenGL. MangoHud supports both, but a title may launch a different executable or rendering path than expected.
- Confirm that Steam is not using a Flatpak sandbox without the documented MangoHud permission or override.
- If the title is 32-bit on a 64-bit system, install the distribution’s matching 32-bit MangoHud package.
- Temporarily remove other overlays, injectors or launch tweaks to isolate a conflict.
The HUD appears in one game but not another
Differences between games are expected. Compare their graphics API, Proton or native runtime, bitness, driver and session type. Wayland and X11 can expose different behavior, as can distribution packages versus Flatpak runtimes. Test the second game with only the MangoHud launch option, then add your preferred configuration after the basic overlay works.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Values are missing or look implausible
A missing temperature or utilization field can reflect driver or hardware support rather than a broken overlay. Check the same sensor in a separate system monitor, then compare readings during a repeatable workload. Remember that total CPU percentage can conceal a single busy thread, and that a brief frame-time spike may not coincide with the highest average utilization.
The game crashes after adding the overlay
Remove the launch option to confirm whether MangoHud is involved. If the crash disappears, retest with a minimal configuration, then add metrics one group at a time. Check whether the game is using Proton, whether another overlay is active, and whether the package architecture matches the game. Keep a copy of the last working launch option so you can revert quickly.
Is MangoHud better than Steam’s overlay?
“Better” depends on the job. Steam’s monitor is convenient because it is integrated into the client and requires no separate overlay package. MangoHud is the stronger choice when you need explicit Vulkan and OpenGL coverage, configurable metric selection, frame-time information, logging, or consistent per-game launch control on Linux.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Steam’s platform-dependent metric support is the deciding difference for many Linux users. If Steam already shows the values you need, its monitor may be sufficient. If metrics disappear across native, Proton, Vulkan or OpenGL titles, MangoHud provides a more deliberate Linux-focused workflow.
Recommended choices by use case
| Your situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want FPS and temperatures in most Steam games | MangoHud | Direct Steam launch option with Vulkan and OpenGL support |
| You want separate settings for competitive and diagnostic profiles | MangoHud plus GOverlay | Per-game profiles avoid repeatedly editing configuration files |
| You only need a small Vulkan diagnostic display | Mesa Vulkan overlay | Appropriate as a driver-specific fallback for advanced users |
| You need system readings outside games | Desktop or vendor monitor alongside MangoHud | System monitors complement, rather than replace, an in-game HUD |
| You use a Flatpak Steam installation | MangoHud with the documented Flatpak override | Sandbox permissions must allow the overlay to reach the game runtime |
Bottom line for Linux Steam players
Install MangoHud and test mangohud %command% first. It is the most complete general-purpose alternative to Steam’s Linux performance counter because it covers Vulkan and OpenGL and exposes FPS, frame time, temperatures, CPU/GPU load and memory telemetry. Add the distribution’s 32-bit package for 32-bit games and follow the documented Flatpak override when Steam is sandboxed. Choose GOverlay when a Qt6 GUI and per-game profiles are more valuable than editing configuration manually. Keep Mesa’s overlay and vendor monitors as specialized complements, not as the default replacement.
