Virtue and a Sledgehammer is playable on Steam Deck and is listed as Steam Deck Verified. Start with a 40 FPS profile: set SteamOS to 40 FPS at 80 Hz, use a 60 FPS in-game cap, and choose medium graphics settings with 85% screen percentage. Steam Deck HQ reports that this profile offers a better balance of image quality, frame rate, and battery life than its 60 FPS alternative. That higher target is possible, but it uses lower graphics settings, draws more power, and can still dip when the game loads new areas.

What should I know before playing?

The short version is that the built-in Deck controls work, the game’s default configuration is considered performant, and you do not need an internet connection for single-player setup or play according to Steam’s compatibility information. The main practical caveat is that Steam’s metadata says external controllers are not supported as the primary player input.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer is a single-player narrative exploration game about returning to a hometown haunted by android ghosts of digitized neighbors. Its story is tied to destroying structures with a sledgehammer and uncovering memories. The Steam listing describes the unusual premise with the line, “Most people resort to therapy. But you chose the brave option. A sledgehammer.”

The game is listed as a Windows title. Steam Deck compatibility relies on the Deck’s compatibility layer, with Proton Stable named as the recommended runtime in Steam’s compatibility metadata. A Windows listing does not, by itself, mean that you must install Windows on the Deck.

What does Steam Deck Verified mean for this game?

For the tested build, Steam’s compatibility metadata records four useful results: the default controller configuration is fully functional, controller glyphs match the Deck, interface text is legible, and the default configuration is performant. These points support playing with the Deck’s built-in controls without first searching for a community layout or changing text scaling.

Verified is a compatibility assessment, not a promise that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate or that every possible accessory will work. In particular, Steam’s metadata says external controllers are not supported as the primary player input. If your plan is to play using a connected controller rather than the Deck’s own controls, do not assume the Verified rating covers that setup.

Steam lists Proton Stable as the recommended runtime and says an internet connection is not required for single-player setup or play. The compatibility details are specific to the tested build; game updates can change performance or compatibility behavior.

Which Steam Deck settings should I use?

Use the 40 FPS configuration as the starting point for handheld play. Steam Deck HQ’s 2026 profile pairs medium in-game settings and 85% screen percentage with a 40 FPS SteamOS cap at 80 Hz; its reported power and battery figures are results from that source’s profile, not guarantees for every Deck or play session.

Steam Deck HQ reports that its balanced profile generally stays near the chosen frame rate, but entering new areas can make the game heavier, with occasional spikes and extra battery drain. Treat the figures in the table as approximate results from that source’s tested profiles. Deck model, battery condition, settings changes, and later game updates can affect what you see.

Set up the 40 FPS profile

  1. In SteamOS, open the game’s Performance settings and set the frame-rate limit to 40 FPS and the refresh rate to 80 Hz.
  2. Open the game’s graphics settings. Set the in-game frame-rate limit to 60 FPS and screen percentage to 85%.
  3. Set shadows, anti-aliasing, view distance, textures, effects, and post-processing to Medium.
  4. Play through more than one area before deciding whether to change profiles. New-area transitions can be more demanding than the sections you have just played.

This pairing uses a 40 FPS system cap with an 80 Hz refresh rate while leaving the game’s own limit at 60 FPS. The two caps serve different roles: the SteamOS limit is the target for the Deck’s display cadence, while the in-game limit is the maximum the game is allowed to render. The profile is intended to balance consistency and image quality rather than maximize the number shown by the game’s cap.

When is the 60 FPS profile worth trying?

Choose the higher-frame-rate profile if responsiveness matters more to you than battery life or image quality. Steam Deck HQ’s settings use a 60 FPS SteamOS cap and 60 Hz refresh rate, with screen percentage reduced to 75%, shadows and anti-aliasing set to Low, and the other listed graphics options at Medium.

The source reports about 16–21 W power use, temperatures around 70–75 °C, and approximately 2.5–3 hours of battery life for this profile. It also warns that entering new areas may still cause drops. Accordingly, 60 FPS is a target that the profile can reach, not a universal locked-frame-rate guarantee.

How do I choose between 40 FPS and 60 FPS?

Pick 40 FPS if you want the recommended starting point and prefer medium settings with the longer reported battery range. Choose 60 FPS if you value a higher frame-rate target enough to accept reduced screen percentage, lower shadows and anti-aliasing, more reported power use, and a shorter reported battery range.

  • Choose 40 FPS for balance: Steam Deck HQ recommends this profile overall, and it retains medium settings across the listed graphics options.
  • Choose 60 FPS for responsiveness: It is a viable alternative, but the profile lowers screen percentage to 75% and reduces two graphics options to Low.
  • Keep area transitions in mind: Steam Deck HQ reports that loading new areas can cause performance changes on either profile. If a brief drop happens during a transition, it does not necessarily mean the whole profile is unsuited to the game.

These profiles are a choice between different trade-offs, not two quality presets with identical visual output. The 60 FPS option makes concessions to image quality and battery life, and it still cannot eliminate every transition-related drop reported by Steam Deck HQ.

What if performance or controls are not as expected?

Check that the system and in-game limits match the profile before changing several graphics options at once. Because Steam Deck HQ describes new areas as the demanding case, compare performance during ordinary exploration and after entering a new area rather than judging only one brief moment.

The game does not stay at 60 FPS

First confirm that the 60 FPS profile is active: SteamOS limit at 60 FPS, refresh rate at 60 Hz, in-game limit at 60 FPS, screen percentage at 75%, and Low shadows and anti-aliasing. Even when those values are set, Steam Deck HQ reports unavoidable drops when entering some new areas. If you prefer steadier pacing over the higher target, switch back to the 40 FPS configuration.

The battery drains faster than expected

Steam Deck HQ reports higher power use and a shorter battery range for its 60 FPS profile than for its 40 FPS profile. A long session, different hardware condition, or a game update may also shift real-world battery life from those reported estimates. If battery time is the priority, use the 40 FPS profile rather than treating the 60 FPS figures as a baseline.

An external controller is not controlling the game

Steam’s compatibility metadata does not support an external controller as the primary player input. The Verified result covers the Deck’s default built-in control configuration; it should not be read as confirmation that a connected controller can replace it.

Do the PC requirements determine whether it will run on Deck?

The official Steam page lists Windows PC requirements, but those specifications are not a Deck-specific performance test. The game is a Windows release that Steam Deck compatibility metadata marks Verified and recommends running with Proton Stable. Use the Steam Deck HQ profiles above for Deck-specific configuration guidance instead of treating a desktop GPU requirement as a direct prediction of Deck frame rate.

Is this a good fit for handheld play?

The compatibility results and the available settings point to a straightforward handheld setup: the built-in controls are supported, the interface text is reported legible, and the default configuration is considered performant by Steam’s metadata. The recommended 40 FPS profile provides a clear starting point for a game whose exploration and story are central to its premise.

The main qualifications are practical rather than disqualifying: area changes can cause dips and battery drain, the 60 FPS profile costs more power and image quality, and the cited compatibility listing does not endorse an external controller as the primary input. For most players, starting at 40 FPS and moving to 60 FPS only if a higher frame-rate target is the priority is the sensible order.
