Iridium is the strongest general-purpose Starlink alternative when secure, dependable communication matters more than broadband speed. Its cross-linked low-Earth-orbit network is designed for global and polar reach, while its satellite phones, messengers, push-to-talk service and Certus terminals cover emergency voice, text and moderate IP data. For managed, high-capacity or anti-jam government missions, Viasat’s multi-orbit services are a better fit. Globalstar and Thuraya can work well inside their regional footprints, and OneWeb is mainly an enterprise or backhaul option rather than a retail replacement.
The right choice depends on the message you must send, the area you must cover, the security controls you can operate and whether you need a personal device or a managed communications system. There is no universal one-for-one replacement for a broadband terminal.
Quick answer: which alternative fits your mission?
| Need | Best-fit class | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency voice, check-ins and text anywhere, including high latitudes | Iridium satellite phone or messenger | Cross-linked LEO coverage is designed to reach the entire Earth and the poles. | Not a substitute for high-throughput broadband. |
| Mobile team data, email, cloud access and encrypted apps | Iridium Certus terminal, such as Iridium GO! exec or a MissionLINK-class terminal | Adds IP connectivity while retaining a portable field workflow. | Capacity and latency depend on the terminal, plan and local conditions. |
| Managed group communications with encrypted push-to-talk | Icom IC-SAT100 or another Iridium PTT device | Iridium documents AES-256 PTT, secure provisioning and device management. | Requires service configuration, authorized provisioning and trained users. |
| High-capacity, anti-jam or airborne government connectivity | Viasat multi-orbit government SATCOM | Combines GEO, MEO and LEO resources with managed routing, cryptography, secure boot and anti-jam capabilities. | Usually procured through government or mission sales channels, not a normal retail checkout. |
| Regional voice or messaging where the footprint is a match | Globalstar or Thuraya | Can be practical and economical inside supported regions. | Coverage is not global; verify the exact operating area before buying. |
| Enterprise backhaul or managed broadband | OneWeb-type non-terrestrial network service | Designed for organizations, resellers and network operators serving remote sites. | Terminal, reseller, security specification and geography are contract-specific. |
None of the cited providers publishes a directly comparable current retail table for price, throughput and latency. Treat quoted figures as plan- and terminal-specific, and obtain a written service description for your operating country.

A fast connection is not automatically a secure one. A remote team needs to consider the whole path: the handset or terminal, the radio link, the provider’s network, the application, identity management and the devices at each endpoint. Encryption advertised by a provider may protect only a particular service, such as push-to-talk, and may require a specific terminal, subscription or configuration.
#1 Best Overall
Use a threat model before selecting hardware. An emergency volunteer team that needs location and a short check-in has different requirements from a defense aircraft carrying classified data. Ask these questions:
- Must the service work at the poles, offshore or only in a known regional footprint?
- Do you need voice, short messages, low-rate telemetry, ordinary IP data or video?
- Does encryption need to be end-to-end between users, or is encrypted transport to a gateway sufficient?
- Who provisions keys, talk groups, accounts and replacement devices?
- Can the equipment be updated, disabled or wiped if it is lost?
- What local radio, import, encryption and licensing rules apply?
Iridium: the practical global alternative
Coverage and network design
Iridium describes a low-Earth-orbit constellation operating at approximately 780 km. Each satellite uses cross-links to four neighboring satellites, allowing traffic to move through the constellation instead of requiring an immediate view of a nearby ground station. Iridium’s network description says this architecture covers the entire Earth, including polar regions. That makes it the clearest option for polar research, ocean passages, remote aviation, wilderness expeditions and disaster zones where terrestrial infrastructure is absent.
Coverage does not mean every device or plan has identical performance. A handheld phone needs a reasonably unobstructed view of the sky, and a data terminal may require more power and a better antenna position than a short-message messenger. Test the device from the locations where it will actually be used, including inside a vehicle, tent or building.

Security features Iridium documents
Iridium’s land-mobile materials describe “AES-256 encrypted PTT sessions with secure, over-the-air provisioning and device management, enterprise-level VPN, and secure apps over Iridium Certus (e.g., WhatsApp/Signal).” The same material says push-to-talk operates with AES-256 encryption. These are provider-stated capabilities, not an independent certification that every deployment is secure by default. Administrators still need to configure identities, access rules, key handling, application encryption and lost-device procedures.
Iridium’s government communications material also markets end-to-end encryption for military satellite communications. Treat that as an attributed vendor statement. Confirm the exact cryptographic mode, key ownership, audit evidence, export controls and terminal certification in the contract or technical documentation for your use case.
Devices and service classes
- Iridium Extreme: A rugged satellite phone for voice, messaging, tracking and emergency use.
- Iridium 9555: A compact handset aimed at basic voice and messaging in remote operations.
- Iridium GO! exec: A portable terminal that creates an IP connection for field devices, making it suitable when a small team needs email, web access or encrypted applications.
- Icom IC-SAT100: An Iridium push-to-talk device for coordinated talk groups.
- Thales MissionLINK terminals: Certus-class equipment for managed voice and IP data in mobile or fixed field installations.
Iridium’s land-mobile page states a maximum secured PTT coverage region of 2.25 million km². That figure describes the provider’s stated service region for the PTT offering, not a guarantee that one talk group will be usable in every country or that all plans have the same boundaries. Confirm national availability and subscription terms.

When Iridium is the right choice
Choose an Iridium phone or messenger when the critical payload is a voice call, a short text, a distress alert or a scheduled check-in. Choose a Certus terminal when the team must exchange files, use cloud systems or run encrypted applications but can accept lower capacity than a broadband terminal. For a work crew that needs persistent group voice, use a managed PTT deployment rather than sharing a consumer handset.
Viasat and Inmarsat services: managed capacity for demanding missions
Viasat describes a hybrid SATCOM approach spanning geostationary (GEO), medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) resources. Its government offering highlights automated routing, threat monitoring, cryptography, secure boot and anti-jam capabilities. Those controls are aimed at government, defense, airborne, search-and-rescue and unmanned missions that need a managed network rather than a self-installed consumer terminal.
This category can be a better Starlink alternative when an organization needs traffic engineering, multiple orbit options, formal support, resilient links or integration with an existing government network. It is not a simple retail comparison. Availability, terminal certification, service geography, throughput, pricing and security accreditation are contract-specific and normally handled through a sales or briefing process.
Questions to ask during procurement
- Which orbit and gateway carry each class of traffic, and how does routing change during an outage or interference event?
- Which cryptographic modules are used, who controls the keys and how are keys rotated or revoked?
- What secure-boot and firmware-signing controls apply to the terminal?
- What anti-jam behavior is available, and what performance reduction should be expected under interference?
- Which countries, aircraft registrations, vessels or mobile platforms are authorized?
- What evidence supports the security claims: accreditation, test reports, configuration guides or only marketing material?
Globalstar, Thuraya and other regional mobile satellite services
Globalstar
Globalstar uses a bent-pipe architecture: traffic is routed through nearby ground stations rather than being carried across an interconnected satellite mesh. Iridium’s 2025 annual report identifies that design as a reason Globalstar has multi-regional coverage rather than truly global coverage, with weaknesses in extreme latitudes and some ocean areas. If your operation stays within a well-served region and has access to the required gateway, Globalstar can be a sensible regional service. It is a poor choice for a route that crosses oceans or approaches the poles without a verified coverage plan.
Thuraya
Thuraya’s regional services can fit Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and parts of Asia when the footprint matches the mission. Regional services may be attractive for teams that work in one continent and can plan around known coverage. Do not infer global reach from a handset’s satellite capability: check the provider’s current footprint, permitted countries, roaming rules and gateway dependencies for every country on the itinerary.

Iridium’s 2025 annual report lists ORBCOMM among its competitors and describes it as focused on low-cost IoT data without voice service. That makes an IoT network a possible complement for sensors, fleet status or machine alerts, not a replacement for a satellite phone or a human voice channel. Separate machine telemetry from the emergency communications plan so a burst of sensor traffic cannot consume the channel needed for a distress message.

OneWeb and emerging non-terrestrial networks
The ITU Broadband Commission’s The State of Satellite Broadband 2025 reports rapid growth in satellite broadband and non-terrestrial networks used with mobile technologies to reach remote and underserved areas. OneWeb is best evaluated as an enterprise, backhaul or managed-network option. The terminal, reseller, geography, service-level agreement and security controls vary by deployment, so there is no responsible universal ranking against a consumer broadband service.
For a remote clinic, mine, research station or community network, ask the integrator to document the complete design: antenna and power budget, local Wi-Fi or wired network, firewall, identity provider, encryption at the application layer, failover path and support escalation. A managed satellite backhaul can be excellent, but it still needs local security engineering.
Satellite phone, messenger or IP terminal?
Choose a satellite phone when voice is the priority
A satellite phone is appropriate when the user may need to speak with emergency services, a dispatcher, a doctor or a family member. Keep calls short, establish a call schedule and use a headset or privacy location where possible. Voice calls reveal timing and contact patterns even when the content is encrypted, so treat call metadata as part of the threat model.

Choose a messenger when small data is enough
A messenger is lighter, uses less power and is easier to carry on a hike or in a survival kit. It is suited to check-ins, coordinates, short text and one-way alerts. It is not suitable for a long incident briefing, software updates or large attachments. Pre-write concise status codes and include a fallback meaning that a new team member can understand.
Choose an IP terminal when several devices need data
An IP terminal lets a team connect phones, laptops or specialist equipment through a controlled local network. It is the appropriate class for email, incident-management systems, encrypted applications and moderate file transfer. Put the terminal behind a firewall, disable unnecessary services, separate operational devices from personal browsing and enforce multi-factor authentication on the applications that support it.
How to select and deploy a secure remote link
- Map the operating area. List every country, offshore segment, mountain valley, polar route and indoor worksite. Mark where a clear sky view is possible and where a vehicle or building will block the antenna.
- Define the minimum service. Write down the required number of calls, messages, talk groups, telemetry events and data volume per day. Include a surge case for an evacuation or outage.
- Match the device class. Select a phone, messenger, PTT handset or IP terminal based on the minimum service, not on a headline speed figure.
- Validate the plan and seller. Confirm the authorized country, network, terminal model, activation method, recurring charges, suspension rules, overage policy and support hours. Buy through an authorized channel and retain the service documents.
- Configure security before field deployment. Change default credentials, enroll named users, set a device-management policy, enable application-level encryption, restrict administration to a small group and record how keys or certificates are replaced.
- Test in realistic conditions. Place the antenna where it will be used, test inside the intended vehicle or shelter, make a call, send a message, transfer a small file and simulate loss of the primary device. Record acquisition time, battery drain and any blocked destinations.
- Train and rehearse. Teach users how to point or position the terminal, start an emergency call, verify a recipient, report a suspected compromise and switch to the fallback channel. Repeat the drill after firmware or plan changes.
- Monitor and review. Keep an inventory of terminals, SIMs or service identities, firmware versions, talk groups and authorized users. Review logs for unusual destinations or data spikes, and revoke access immediately when equipment is lost.
Security controls that matter in the field
- Use end-to-end encrypted applications for sensitive content. Provider-level link encryption protects the satellite hop, while an application such as Signal can protect the message between endpoints when configured correctly.
- Protect identity and keys. Do not share a single account among a whole team. Use named accounts, strong authentication and a documented revocation process.
- Minimize metadata. Schedule check-ins, avoid unnecessary calls, and do not broadcast precise locations unless the recipient needs them.
- Harden the local network. Segment operational equipment, use a firewall, disable automatic administration from the satellite-facing interface and patch connected devices before departure.
- Plan for power loss. Carry charged spare batteries, vehicle adapters or a generator-compatible supply. A secure terminal that cannot be powered is not an emergency channel.
- Assume the terminal can be captured. Enable screen locks, remote disable or wipe where supported, store the device securely and keep sensitive data off the terminal when possible.
- Respect local law. Satellite phones and encryption may require registration, licensing or import approval. A technically secure device can still be confiscated or disabled if used unlawfully.
Weather, interference and physical placement
Iridium uses L-band links, which its materials present as more weather-resilient than many higher-frequency geostationary links. That does not eliminate outages. Heavy precipitation, foliage, terrain, vehicle roofs, poor antenna orientation, local interference and depleted batteries can all prevent a session. Keep the antenna outside or near a clear window when the device requires it, and test the exact installation rather than relying on a map.

Higher-capacity systems can be more sensitive to blockage and may require a stable mount and a larger power budget. A portable system that works on an open deck may fail inside a steel shelter. Include a low-bandwidth Iridium phone or messenger as an independent fallback when the consequences of losing the primary link are severe.
What the outage evidence does—and does not—show
Iridium reported a 3,300% increase in network and voice activity during the 2025 Spain power outage. This is a company-reported operational figure showing that satellite demand can surge when terrestrial networks fail; it is not an independent benchmark of call quality, capacity or security. Design for congestion by reserving emergency capacity, defining priority users and keeping messages concise.
Limits of a simple “most secure” ranking
Iridium publishes specific AES-256 PTT, provisioning, device-management and VPN capabilities. Viasat publishes cryptography, secure boot and anti-jam features for government systems. Those statements describe different service classes and threat models, so they cannot establish that one provider is universally more secure than another. Security depends on the terminal, firmware, account setup, key custody, applications, local network and user behavior.
Before signing a contract, request the current security architecture, supported algorithms, key-management model, software-update process, incident-notification terms and any independent certification relevant to your organization. If the vendor will not document those controls, treat the service as a connectivity tool and add your own end-to-end encryption rather than assuming the link is confidential.
Decision examples
Remote cabin or expedition
Use an Iridium messenger for scheduled check-ins and coordinates. Add an Iridium phone if a voice conversation with rescue services is important. A full IP terminal is justified only when the occupants genuinely need regular data access and can supply the extra power and setup time.

Start with Iridium because its cross-linked LEO network is designed for ocean and polar reach. Carry an independent handset or messenger even if the vessel has a larger managed terminal. Regional bent-pipe services should be selected only after the entire route has been checked against the provider’s current map.
Best Value
Utility, NGO or emergency-response team
Use a managed Iridium PTT group for short operational voice, with Certus terminals for incident data and encrypted applications. Assign talk groups, administrators and replacement devices before deployment. Keep a written call tree for the period when terrestrial power or cellular service is unavailable.
Defense, aviation or unmanned mission
Evaluate Viasat’s managed multi-orbit government SATCOM when anti-jam behavior, secure boot, formal support and high-capacity integration are required. Procurement should include accreditation, key custody, routing behavior, terminal certification and a tested contingency link.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Iridium replace a broadband satellite terminal?
Iridium can replace broadband only when your requirement is voice, messaging or moderate IP data. A phone or messenger is not a high-throughput internet connection; a Certus terminal adds data but remains a different service class from a broadband terminal.
Does AES-256 PTT mean every Iridium communication is end-to-end encrypted?
No. Iridium documents AES-256 for its push-to-talk sessions and describes other security controls, but encryption scope depends on the service, terminal and configuration. Use end-to-end encrypted applications for sensitive content and verify key management.
Will a regional satellite service work offshore?
Only if the vessel remains inside that provider’s current footprint and gateway coverage. Globalstar’s bent-pipe design and regional services such as Thuraya can have gaps over oceans or high latitudes, so check the full route rather than the departure port.
What should I do if the satellite terminal is lost?
Revoke its service identity or account, disable or wipe it if the platform supports that function, notify the provider and issue replacement credentials. Keep an inventory that links each device to a named user so revocation is immediate.
