The Samsung 990 Pro remains the safest all-round SSD purchase in 2026: it is fast enough for demanding desktop work and gaming, widely compatible with PCIe 4.0 systems, and available in capacities up to 4TB. PCIe 5.0 drives such as the Corsair MP700 Pro XT are dramatically faster in sequential benchmarks, but they cost more, run hotter and rarely make ordinary applications feel twice as fast.

This guide covers the best internal SSDs for desktops and laptops, including high-end Gen 5 models, efficient laptop drives, budget NVMe storage and SATA upgrades. Prices are changing quickly in 2026, so compare current retail pricing rather than relying on an old review price.

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption

It also has a five-year warranty and an endurance rating of up to 2,400 TBW, depending on capacity. That makes it a better-balanced purchase than a faster Gen 5 SSD if you want high performance without paying for a new platform, a more substantial heatsink or extra power consumption.

Choose the 990 Pro for a system drive, game library, photo and video applications, or demanding everyday use. A PCIe 5.0 drive can beat it in sequential benchmarks, but normal browsing, office work and many games will not feel twice as fast simply because the SSD has twice the interface bandwidth.

2. WD_BLACK SN850X: best alternative to the 990 Pro

The WD_BLACK SN850X is a strong PCIe 4.0 alternative, with rated speeds of up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write. It is available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions, giving it an advantage when you need a large game or project drive.

Like the Samsung, it carries a five-year warranty and reaches up to 2,400 TBW. Some capacities are sold with heatsinks and RGB lighting, but the heatsink/RGB option is not available at every capacity. Check the exact retail model before ordering, especially if your motherboard already has an M.2 cover.

3. Corsair MP700 Pro XT: fastest tested SSD

If benchmark numbers are the priority, the Corsair MP700 Pro XT is the standout. This single-sided M.2 2280 drive uses PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0, with rated sequential performance of up to 14,900 MB/s read and 14,700 MB/s write. It comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities and is rated for up to 2,800 TBW.

There are important conditions. Your motherboard or laptop must provide a PCIe 5.0-capable M.2 slot to reach those figures. Gen 5 drives also produce more heat, so use the motherboard’s M.2 heatsink if it is suitable, or the drive’s specified cooling solution. This is an enthusiast choice, not an automatic upgrade for a PCIe 4.0 gaming PC.

4. WD_BLACK SN8100: best high-capacity PCIe 5.0 SSD

The WD_BLACK SN8100 is the more practical Gen 5 choice when capacity matters. It is available from 1TB through 8TB, with rated speeds up to 14,900 MB/s read and 14,000 MB/s write. The 4TB model carries an endurance rating of up to 2,400 TBW, and the range has a five-year warranty.

It costs more than a good Gen 4 SSD, but the 8TB option avoids combining several smaller drives for a large game, media or project library. It is primarily a desktop recommendation: power draw, heat and the double-sided construction of some high-capacity models can be awkward in thin laptops.

  • Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write

  • 5-year limited warranty

5. Lexar NM1090 Pro: best value high-end Gen 5 SSD

The Lexar NM1090 Pro is “budget” only relative to other PCIe 5.0 drives. Its rated performance reaches 14,000 MB/s read and 13,000 MB/s write, with up to 2,100K/1,700K random 4K IOPS. Capacities are 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, and the warranty is five years with up to 2,800 TBW.

It uses a double-sided M.2 2280 design, so check clearance before installing it in a laptop or a system with a restrictive M.2 cover. It makes sense when you specifically want Gen 5 performance but the top-priced alternatives do not fit your budget.

6. WD_BLACK SN7100: best SSD for laptops

The WD_BLACK SN7100 is a better laptop pick than many faster-looking desktop drives because it combines strong PCIe 4.0 performance with power efficiency. It reaches up to 7,250 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, and is sold in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities.

This is a DRAM-less, HMB-based NVMe SSD. That does not make it unsuitable: HMB lets the drive use a small amount of system memory for mapping data, and the SN7100’s efficiency is particularly useful in a battery-powered computer. It has a five-year warranty and up to 2,400 TBW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that your laptop accepts an M.2 2280 drive. Some compact systems use M.2 2230 or 2242 instead, and a drive that is electrically compatible still will not fit if the mounting point is wrong.

7. Crucial T500: strong laptop alternative and 4TB option

The Crucial T500 is a fast single-sided PCIe 4.0 x4 drive in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. Its rated speeds reach 7,400 MB/s read and 7,000 MB/s write. The 2TB model is rated for 1,200 TBW and comes with a five-year warranty.

The 4TB version deserves special attention because it is double-sided. That can be fine in a desktop, but it may not fit a thin laptop designed around a single-sided M.2 drive. The T500 is also not the most consistent option for every sustained workload, so it is a better general-purpose or capacity choice than a guaranteed heavy-write specialist.

8. Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB: best 8TB SSD

For a single, extremely large internal drive, the Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB offers PCIe 5.0 performance up to 14,700 MB/s read and 13,300 MB/s write. Its endurance rating reaches up to 4,800 TBW, and it has a five-year warranty.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

The 8TB model is double-sided and has relatively high thermal and power demands. It is therefore better suited to a desktop with good M.2 cooling than to a thin notebook. Samsung sells 9100 Pro versions with and without a heatsink; choose only one cooling arrangement, rather than fitting a drive heatsink underneath a motherboard heatsink cover.

9. Biwin Black Opal NV7400: best budget M.2 SSD

The Biwin Black Opal NV7400 offers unusually high rated performance for a lower-cost PCIe 4.0 drive: up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,500 MB/s write. It is a single-sided M.2 2280 SSD available in 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities, with a five-year warranty and up to 4,000 TBW.

Availability can vary more than it does for Samsung, WD or Crucial products. Verify the exact model, capacity and hardware before buying; do not assume that every similarly named Black Opal drive has the same controller, NAND or endurance rating.

10. TeamGroup MP44Q: cheap capacity with a sustained-write warning

The TeamGroup MP44Q is an affordable PCIe 4.0 option in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB sizes. Its rated speeds reach 7,000 MB/s read and 5,900 MB/s write, with a five-year warranty and up to 2,000 TBW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its QLC NAND helps keep the price down, but it is a poor choice for repeated large writes once its dynamic SLC cache is exhausted. It can work well as a game library or inexpensive secondary drive; choose TLC storage instead if you regularly edit large video files, build software projects or move hundreds of gigabytes at a time.

11. Samsung 870 EVO: best SATA SSD

The Samsung 870 EVO is the current SATA recommendation for systems without an NVMe-capable M.2 slot, older desktops and laptops that accept 2.5-inch drives. It uses a 7mm 2.5-inch chassis, SATA 6Gbps/AHCI, TLC NAND and onboard DRAM. Rated performance is up to 560 MB/s read and 530 MB/s write.

Capacities run from 250GB through 4TB, with a five-year warranty and up to 2,400 TBW. It is substantially slower than a modern PCIe NVMe SSD, but it remains a worthwhile upgrade from a mechanical hard drive and a sensible replacement for an aging SATA SSD.

The Crucial MX500 should not be treated as the default current SATA choice: the current recommendation is the Samsung 870 EVO, and Crucial has stopped making the MX500.

How to choose the right SSD

Check the slot, not just the drive name

M.2 is a shape, not a protocol. An M.2 drive can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and an M.2 slot may support one or both. Consult the exact motherboard or laptop manual before purchasing.

M.2 2280 means approximately 22mm wide and 80mm long. M.2 2230 and 2242 drives are shorter. A 2280 SSD will not fit a system whose mounting screw is provided only for 2230 or 2242.

PCIe 5.0 works in older systems, but loses its advantage

PCIe generations are backward-compatible. A PCIe 5.0 SSD can operate in a compatible PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 3.0 slot, but it will be limited to the host slot’s generation and lane configuration. A PCIe 4.0 SSD in a PCIe 3.0 slot is similarly limited.

Motherboards can also share M.2 lanes with SATA ports, PCIe expansion slots or other devices. The manual is authoritative; do not assume every M.2 slot has the same speed.

Do not buy based only on the box’s sequential speed

Sequential figures are peak specifications measured under particular conditions. They can depend on capacity, firmware, test hardware and a dynamic SLC cache. After that cache fills, sustained write speed may fall sharply, especially on QLC drives such as the MP44Q.

For large, repeated transfers, look for testing performed after the write cache is saturated. For everyday use, random performance, latency, thermals, firmware support and price can matter more than the highest sequential-read number.

Understand TLC, QLC, DRAM and HMB

  • TLC stores three bits per flash cell; QLC stores four. QLC can reduce cost and increase capacity, but is generally less attractive for heavy sustained writing.
  • DRAM gives an SSD onboard memory for mapping data and can help demanding workloads.
  • HMB, or Host Memory Buffer, allows some DRAM-less NVMe drives to use a small amount of system memory. DRAM-less does not automatically mean poor, as the laptop-focused SN7100 demonstrates.
  • For SATA drives, onboard DRAM is more important because SATA SSDs do not use NVMe-style HMB in the same way.

Plan cooling for Gen 5

PCIe 5.0 drives typically use more power and generate more heat than mainstream Gen 4 models. Install the motherboard M.2 heatsink if it provides suitable contact with the SSD, or use the SSD manufacturer’s heatsink where appropriate. Never stack two heatsinks on the same drive, and check clearance for graphics cards, laptop covers and PlayStation 5 installations.

Treat TBW as a comparison rating

TBW means terabytes written under the manufacturer’s warranty methodology. It is not a predicted failure date, and reaching the figure does not mean the SSD instantly stops working. Warranty conditions, temperature, firmware, workload and capacity all matter.

Sandisk Optimus 5100 500GB NVMe SSD, PCIe 4.0, M.2 2280
  • SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).
  • CREATE AND STORE MORE. Make more room for your 4K videos and high-resolution images with capacities from 500GB[1] up to 4TB[1] on M.2 2280 built with our trusted 8th generation SANDISK BiCS QLC 3D CBA NAND.
  • IT GOES WHERE YOU GO. With an all-new power efficient design, your drive delivers high performance with low power, giving you more time to be productive while on the go.
  • UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

Compare endurance at the same capacity: larger versions commonly receive higher TBW ratings, so a 4TB model’s number should not be compared directly with a 1TB model’s number without context.

What should you buy?

  1. For most desktops and gaming PCs, buy the Samsung 990 Pro in 1TB, 2TB or 4TB.
  2. Choose the WD_BLACK SN850X if its capacity or current price is better, particularly for an 8TB game or media drive.
  3. Buy the Corsair MP700 Pro XT, WD_BLACK SN8100 or Samsung 9100 Pro only when your system supports PCIe 5.0 and you have adequate cooling.
  4. For a laptop, prioritize size, single-sided clearance and power draw. The WD_BLACK SN7100 is the most straightforward recommendation.
  5. For a low-cost NVMe upgrade, consider the Biwin Black Opal NV7400, but verify availability and the exact product specification.
  6. For an older SATA-only system, install the Samsung 870 EVO rather than trying to force an NVMe drive into an incompatible slot.

One final 2026 caveat: NAND-market changes are pushing SSD prices around, and prices shown in older reviews may already be obsolete. Check the live price, warranty terms and exact capacity immediately before ordering. If you are buying an SSD for a Thunderbolt 5 Mac enclosure, also check compatibility separately: current guidance warns that some Phison E26-based drives have caused problems in 80Gbps enclosures. That warning does not automatically apply to normal internal desktop or laptop installations.

FAQ

Is PCIe 5.0 SSD storage worth it for gaming in 2026?

Usually not for a normal gaming upgrade. PCIe 5.0 drives can provide roughly twice the sequential bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 models, but many games and everyday applications do not deliver a proportional improvement. Buy Gen 5 for heavy transfers, workstation workloads or benchmark performance, and choose a well-priced PCIe 4.0 drive for most gaming PCs.

Can I install an NVMe SSD in any M.2 slot?

No. M.2 describes the physical format, while NVMe describes the PCIe storage protocol. Some M.2 slots support SATA, some support PCIe/NVMe, and some support both. Check the exact motherboard or laptop manual, including the supported drive length and PCIe lane configuration.

Which SSD is best for a laptop?

The WD_BLACK SN7100 is the strongest general recommendation from this list because it combines PCIe 4.0 performance with power efficiency. Confirm that the laptop accepts an M.2 2280 drive and check whether it requires a single-sided SSD. The double-sided 4TB Crucial T500 and Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB may not fit thin laptops.

Is QLC SSD storage bad?

No, but it involves a trade-off. QLC drives can provide inexpensive capacity and work well for games or general secondary storage. Their sustained write performance can drop after the SLC cache is exhausted, so a TLC SSD is preferable for frequent large transfers, video editing or other write-heavy workloads.

The Bottom Line

For most buyers, get the Samsung 990 Pro. It provides near-top PCIe 4.0 performance without the cost and cooling demands of Gen 5. Pick the WD_BLACK SN7100 for a compatible laptop, the Biwin Black Opal NV7400 for a lower-cost NVMe build, and the Samsung 870 EVO when your system is limited to 2.5-inch SATA storage. PCIe 5.0 models are the performance leaders, but they are specialist purchases rather than automatic upgrades.
