There is no manufacturer-verified, soundhole-mounted pickup for acoustic bass in the specifications reviewed. The closest documented option is Fishman’s Acoustic Matrix, which the 2026 OEM catalog identifies as suitable for acoustic bass guitar, but it senses vibration under the saddle and puts its controls at the soundhole. That is not the same configuration as a magnetic pickup mounted in the soundhole.

LR Baggs M1 Passive, M1 Active and Shadow SH 340 are useful soundhole-pickup comparisons, yet their cited specifications list steel-string or 12-string guitar rather than acoustic bass. Treat them as unverified for bass unless the pickup maker confirms your exact instrument, string material and tuning. This guide explains the distinction, compares the documented candidates and gives a fit-check process before you buy or modify the instrument.

Are any soundhole-mounted pickups officially made for acoustic bass?

No confirmed model appears in the cited manufacturer material. The documented bass-capable product is an undersaddle system with soundhole-mounted controls, while the explicitly soundhole-mounted examples are specified for steel-string guitar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because “soundhole pickup” can describe either the location of the sensing element or merely the location of a control module. A magnetic pickup clamped across the soundhole detects the strings directly. An undersaddle pickup detects pressure and vibration beneath the saddle, even when its volume or preamp controls are installed beside the soundhole. Those designs have different mechanical, tonal and installation requirements.

An acoustic bass also presents a different problem from a six-string acoustic guitar: its scale, string tension, saddle width, body depth and low-frequency output may exceed what a guitar pickup was designed to handle. A product page that says “steel-string” does not establish compatibility with an acoustic bass. Obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician for the exact make and model.

What are the documented pickup choices and their limits?

The table separates sensing position from control position and repeats each maker’s stated instrument coverage rather than inferring bass compatibility.

Product Sensing and mounting Manufacturer-stated instruments Controls and power Fit and installation notes
Fishman Acoustic Matrix Undersaddle pickup; controls mount at the soundhole Acoustic bass guitar is identified as suitable in the 2026 OEM catalog Catalog excerpt does not state a battery or control specification Confirm saddle format, saddle width and the instrument’s internal clearance before installation
LR Baggs M1 Passive Magnetic pickup clamped in the soundhole Steel-string and 12-string instruments Passive; no onboard preamp or battery; adjustable pole pieces Professional installation is required according to the product information; acoustic-bass support is not stated
LR Baggs M1 Active Magnetic soundhole pickup Steel-string and 12-string instruments Onboard volume control; CR2032 battery; manufacturer lists 1,000 hours of battery life Do not assume bass fit from the guitar listing; confirm clearance and string response first
Shadow SH 340 Soundhole-mounted pickup with adjustable height Steel-string acoustic guitar Passive/active details are not stated in the cited description Specified for a 96–105 mm soundhole diameter; bass compatibility is not established
LR Baggs HiFi Bridge-plate pickup rather than a soundhole magnetic pickup Cited information lists steel-string guitar Control and power details vary by system; verify the current configuration Support guidance calls for professional installation and warns that some guitars lack enough room
LR Baggs Element Active System Undersaddle pickup rather than a soundhole magnetic pickup Steel-string/12-string versions are listed; a separate nylon-string version is also identified Manufacturer lists 1,000 hours of battery life The cited specifications do not establish acoustic-bass compatibility

These are specifications, not an independent sound-quality ranking. No controlled comparison in the cited material proves that a guitar soundhole model works on an acoustic bass.

Is Fishman Acoustic Matrix the most defensible bass option?

It is the strongest documented candidate if you can accept an undersaddle pickup instead of a soundhole-mounted sensor. Fishman’s 2026 OEM catalog explicitly identifies Acoustic Matrix as suitable for acoustic bass guitar, which is more relevant than a generic steel-string-guitar listing.

The system still does not satisfy a strict request for a soundhole pickup. The sensing element sits under the saddle; the soundhole is used for the controls. Before ordering, have the installer confirm:

  • Whether your saddle is the format and width required by the system.
  • Whether the saddle slot is straight, deep and wide enough for the element without compromising saddle contact.
  • Whether the bass body has enough internal space for the preamp, wiring and jack.
  • How the system handles your string spacing, tuning and string material.
  • What endpin-jack or other body work is needed on your particular instrument.

Because the catalog establishes suitability for the instrument category rather than every bass model, the final decision remains model-specific. Ask for the installation drawing and a written fit confirmation instead of treating “acoustic bass” as a universal guarantee.

Can the LR Baggs M1 Passive be used on an acoustic bass?

The M1 Passive is a genuine magnetic soundhole pickup, but its cited official specification names steel-string and 12-string instruments, not acoustic bass. It should therefore be considered a guitar comparison example, not a verified bass recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its passive design needs no battery or onboard preamp, and its adjustable pole pieces let a technician align the magnetic response to the strings. That feature does not solve the compatibility question: pole-piece spacing, the bass’s string composition and the pickup’s physical opening must all suit one another. A magnetic element may respond differently to strings with little ferromagnetic content, so do not infer performance from the phrase “steel-string” alone.

The product information says professional installation is required. Have the installer inspect the soundhole edge, brace locations and cable route, then confirm that the pickup can sit securely without touching the top or strings during the instrument’s full range of motion.

Can the LR Baggs M1 Active be used on an acoustic bass?

The M1 Active adds a volume control and CR2032 battery to the same general magnetic, soundhole-mounted approach, but its stated instruments are still steel-string and 12-string guitar. Bass compatibility remains unverified.

LR Baggs lists 1,000 hours of battery life. That is a manufacturer specification, not a guaranteed runtime; unplug the instrument when it is stored, because an active circuit can drain a battery if the output remains connected. Make sure the battery compartment and volume control can be reached without interfering with the bass’s braces or the player’s right arm.

Choose the Active version only if you have a confirmed mechanical fit and specifically need local volume control or the signal conditioning provided by its active circuit. If your amplifier or effects chain already supplies an appropriate high-impedance input, the Passive model may avoid battery maintenance, but neither model is documented as bass-compatible in the cited pages.

What does the Shadow SH 340 specification tell you?

Shadow lists the SH 340 for steel-string acoustic guitar and gives a 96–105 mm soundhole-diameter range. That measurement is useful for rejecting an obvious mismatch, but it is not evidence that the pickup can handle an acoustic bass.

Measure the finished soundhole at several points rather than relying on a nominal body size; a slightly oval opening, binding or nearby bracing can reduce usable clearance. The pickup’s adjustable height helps with string-to-sensor distance, yet it cannot compensate for an opening outside the stated range, unsuitable string materials or bass-specific structural loads.

If your bass falls within the diameter range, send the dimensions and instrument model to Shadow before purchase and ask whether the company supports that bass and its strings. Keep the response with your installation records in case a retailer’s generic “acoustic” label conflicts with the manufacturer’s position.

How do you verify fit before buying any pickup?

Use a written, instrument-specific check. The following sequence prevents an attractive specification from turning into an expensive modification.

  1. Identify the instrument precisely. Record the maker, model, year or production revision, scale length, string count, tuning and whether it is a factory acoustic bass or a converted instrument.
  2. Classify the pickup by sensing location. Ask whether the element is magnetic at the soundhole, under the saddle, on the bridge plate or elsewhere. A soundhole control module does not change the sensing location.
  3. Check the maker’s stated instrument list. “Steel-string,” “12-string” and “acoustic bass” are separate categories. If bass is absent, request confirmation rather than extrapolating.
  4. Measure the physical interface. For a soundhole unit, measure opening diameter, edge thickness, brace clearance and the distance to the strings. For an undersaddle unit, measure saddle length, width, height and slot depth.
  5. Confirm string and magnetic requirements. Provide the exact string type, gauge and tuning. Ask how the sensor responds to the materials used on your bass and whether pole pieces align with the string spacing.
  6. Plan power and controls. Determine whether the system is passive, needs a battery, uses a soundhole-mounted preamp or requires a permanently installed jack. Verify battery access and cable clearance.
  7. Get an installation quote. Include any saddle work, endpin-jack drilling, internal routing or top modification. A low purchase price can become uneconomical once specialist labor is added.
  8. Request a return path. Confirm that the retailer accepts a return if the manufacturer later rejects the fit, and avoid irreversible drilling until the technician has inspected the instrument.

What installation risks should an acoustic-bass owner plan for?

Installation is not a cosmetic accessory swap. The top, braces, saddle and endpin are structural or acoustically important parts, and a poor fit can create noise or damage.

  • Insufficient clearance: A pickup body or battery may contact a brace, top or strings. The symptom can be rattling, intermittent output or a permanently stressed top. Stop and have the cavity inspected rather than forcing the unit into place.
  • Incorrect saddle contact: An undersaddle element needs even pressure. A tilted, loose or poorly shaped saddle can produce weak or uneven notes. The remedy is a qualified saddle and slot inspection, not simply raising the preamp gain.
  • Magnetic imbalance: Pole pieces that do not line up with the strings can make some notes louder than others. Alignment must be checked at playing height with the bass tuned to its normal pitch.
  • Feedback and handling noise: Acoustic-bass bodies move substantial air. Ask the installer about gain staging, soundhole covers and amplifier placement if low-frequency feedback appears.
  • Unwanted permanent work: Endpin drilling or internal routing may affect resale value and warranty coverage. Obtain the owner’s approval for every hole before work begins.
  • Battery failures: An active system that suddenly goes quiet may have a depleted CR2032, a loose connector or a cable that is not fully inserted. Replace the battery with the specified type and test the cable before assuming the pickup has failed.

LR Baggs’ HiFi support guidance specifically recommends professional installation and notes that some guitars do not have adequate room. Although that warning concerns the HiFi system, it illustrates why an internal inspection is valuable for any pickup installation.

Your priority Most defensible direction Why What remains to verify
Documented acoustic-bass support Fishman Acoustic Matrix The 2026 OEM catalog names acoustic bass guitar It is undersaddle, and saddle, body and jack fit are model-specific
Magnetic sensing at the soundhole M1 Passive or M1 Active as comparison candidates only Both are actual magnetic soundhole designs The cited specifications do not cover acoustic bass, strings or tuning
Soundhole diameter is the main constraint Shadow SH 340 only if the maker confirms your bass The product lists a 96–105 mm opening range Its stated instrument is steel-string acoustic guitar
No body modification Ask whether a removable soundhole unit is available for your exact bass A permanent jack or saddle alteration may be unacceptable Mechanical security, cable routing and output impedance
Lowest maintenance A confirmed passive design No battery to replace Passive output level, preamp requirements and bass compatibility

If a soundhole-mounted bass pickup is mandatory, the correct next step is a manufacturer confirmation, not a guess based on a guitar product’s clamp range. If reliable bass support matters more than the mounting location, the documented undersaddle route is easier to defend.

What should you ask a technician or manufacturer?

Send a complete, answerable message rather than “Will this fit?” Include the instrument model, photos of the soundhole and saddle, soundhole diameter, saddle dimensions, string brand and gauge, tuning, and whether you will accept an endpin jack.

Ask five focused questions: Is this exact model supported? Are the strings magnetically suitable? What clearances are required? What irreversible work is necessary? Which part numbers and battery specifications apply? Save the reply, because a retailer’s category label may be broader than the maker’s engineering documentation.

What is the practical verdict for buyers?

For an acoustic-bass player who can use an undersaddle system, Fishman Acoustic Matrix is the only candidate in the cited material with an explicit acoustic-bass suitability statement, and its soundhole controls should not be mistaken for a soundhole pickup. The M1 Passive, M1 Active and Shadow SH 340 demonstrate soundhole mounting, but their documented coverage is guitar-only. Buy one for a bass only after the manufacturer or a qualified installer confirms the exact fit and string compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a magnetic soundhole pickup work with bronze acoustic-bass strings?

You cannot determine that from the pickup’s clamp size. Magnetic response depends on the string materials and the sensor design, so provide the exact string specification and tuning to the manufacturer before purchase.

Does an undersaddle system require changing the bass saddle?

It may require a saddle and slot that meet the element’s dimensions and pressure requirements. Have a technician measure the existing parts and quote any shaping or replacement before authorizing the installation.

Can I install an M1 pickup myself?

The M1 product information calls for professional installation. Even when no major routing is planned, a technician should check brace clearance, string alignment and safe cable placement on an acoustic bass.

How often will the M1 Active battery need replacement?

The manufacturer lists 1,000 hours of battery life for the M1 Active. Actual runtime varies with use and storage habits, so unplug the instrument after playing and carry a compatible CR2032 as a spare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my soundhole is outside the SH 340’s 96–105 mm range?

Do not stretch or force the pickup to make it fit. Ask Shadow for a model approved for your opening or choose a different sensing system after a technician checks the bass.
