Which kind of video rotation do you need?
“Schedule rotating videos” can mean either a local playlist that plays in order and repeats, or a service that keeps prerecorded video streaming continuously without an operator leaving a computer on. Those are different workflows: OBS gives you direct control over a playlist on your computer; a cloud service manages playback remotely.
- Several clips in a fixed order: OBS Studio with its VLC Video source.
- Several clips in random order: OBS Studio with VLC Video and Shuffle Playlist enabled.
- One clip repeated: OBS Studio’s built-in Media Source with Loop enabled.
- Continuous streaming without a dedicated computer: StreamNeo or another hosted option; YouTube also lists standalone hardware for scheduled prerecorded playback.
These options send content through a YouTube Live broadcast. They are not the same as looping a playlist while watching YouTube. You must have the rights to stream every video, audio track, and other element in your broadcast; a video being publicly viewable does not grant rebroadcast permission.

OBS is the most direct documented DIY choice when you want to arrange multiple files and have them repeat. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, with Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off by default. The source can be configured to preserve a sequence or rotate clips randomly. This is a playback workflow, not a calendar-based scheduler for starting different playlists at set times.

Before you begin
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS requires VLC to use its VLC Video source.
- Match the application architecture: OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Prepare video files you have permission to broadcast, and confirm that the computer has access to them for the full scheduled run.
- Verify that your YouTube channel is eligible for live streaming before building an unattended plan. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Set up a playlist that repeats
- Open OBS and create or select the scene for your broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, add the local video files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. The VLC source’s playlist controls determine which files are included and their sequence.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback restarts when it reaches the end of the playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a fixed sequence; enable it if you want random rotation.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents that a source stops when it is not visible and restarts when it becomes visible by default. Keep it visible in the active scene, or deliberately adjust the relevant source behavior if your scene workflow requires it.
- Confirm the video is framed correctly in the OBS preview, then configure and test your YouTube stream before relying on the schedule.
OBS describes the loop setting as specifying whether the source should restart after it has run out of media files. See the OBS Project Media Sources documentation for the VLC Video source behavior and other media-source settings.
Stream OBS to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream key to connect the encoder to a live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the stream key shown for that stream in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. YouTube’s exact interface may change, so follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions for the Studio labels and connection steps.
Before using a public broadcast, make a private or unlisted rehearsal. Confirm that the correct playlist plays, the loop returns to the first clip, audio is present, and YouTube receives the stream. YouTube notes that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming; OBS is one of the encoders in its guidance. A rehearsal also gives you a chance to verify the broadcast setup before depending on it unattended.

For one repeating video: OBS Media Source
If you only need a single local video to repeat, use OBS’s built-in Media Source rather than constructing a VLC playlist. Add a Media Source to the scene, select the file, and turn on Loop. OBS documents Loop as off by default. This is simpler for one file, but it is not the multi-file playlist workflow described above.
Hosted services and standalone hardware
If you do not want to keep an OBS computer running, YouTube’s encoder listing includes hosted services and a hardware product for continuous or scheduled prerecorded streaming. Its listing is not a comparative review, so the options below should be treated as candidates to investigate, not as a reliability or price ranking.

How to choose
- Choose OBS + VLC if you want hands-on control over a local playlist and can keep the computer, OBS, and network connection running for the broadcast.
- Choose OBS Media Source if the requirement is simply to repeat one local clip.
- Choose a cloud service if avoiding a dedicated PC is the priority; compare current plans and confirm playlist behavior and terms directly with each provider.
- Consider standalone hardware if you want a dedicated device for scheduled playback and the device setup is justified for your use.
Troubleshooting a rotating-video stream
The VLC Video source is missing
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is not available.

The playlist stops instead of starting over
Open the VLC Video source properties and make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents that this setting controls whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files.
The clips play in an unexpected order
Check the order of files in the VLC playlist and the Shuffle Playlist setting. For a fixed sequence, keep shuffle off; for randomized playback, turn it on.
Playback pauses or restarts when scenes change
OBS’s documented default is to stop a VLC Video source when it is not visible and restart it when visible. Confirm that the source remains visible in the active scene, or review the source’s visibility behavior if your scene changes are intentional.

YouTube will not let the channel go live
Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave eligibility checks until the scheduled start.
The stream key no longer connects
Confirm that OBS is using the key for the intended YouTube stream and that the key has not been reset. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
Costs and unattended operation
OBS and its media-source workflow run on your own computer, but that does not eliminate operating costs: the machine and internet connection must remain available while the stream is live, and you are responsible for setup and monitoring.
