For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should run around the clock, start with a cloud service built for continuous playback. StreamNeo is our first option: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps for one flat price per slot, and gives you the first day free. YouTube’s encoder list also identifies Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams. If you want local control, OBS Studio can loop a file or playlist, but the computer and internet connection must stay available. StreamYard is better suited to scheduled, finite prerecorded broadcasts than one uninterrupted loop.

Which type of software fits a 24/7 prerecorded stream?

These options solve different problems: cloud services keep playback running without a dedicated local computer; OBS loops media on a computer you operate; and scheduled-broadcast services start a video at a set time and stop when it ends. Choose based on whether you need continuous playback, local control, or scheduled segments.

Option Best fit What it does Important limitation
StreamNeo Continuous prerecorded YouTube streaming from the cloud Runs uploaded videos and playlists continuously without keeping a home computer on; supports the uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot. YouTube only; it streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Gyre Cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streaming YouTube’s verified encoder documentation lists it as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams without a dedicated PC. YouTube’s encoder list establishes it as a relevant candidate, not an independently tested winner. Current pricing, terms, uptime, and partner-program availability are not established here; check them with the provider before choosing.
OBS Studio Local control and looping a media file or playlist Its Media Source can loop a file, and its VLC Video source supports playlists with Loop Playlist enabled by default. The documented sources work on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Media Sources guide The computer, power, OBS, and internet connection must remain available. No continuous uptime is guaranteed.
StreamYard prerecorded broadcasts Automatically starting scheduled, finite broadcasts A scheduled broadcast starts at the selected time and ends when the uploaded video finishes. Its help page lists video limits of 2 hours on Core, 4 on Advanced, and 8 on Team and Business. StreamYard’s current help page Those per-video limits make it a different workflow from one continuous 24/7 loop; confirm current plan names and limits before committing.
Restream Connecting a YouTube account and configuring stream delivery Its guide covers channel connection and technical setup. Restream’s YouTube guide The guide does not establish Restream as the best standalone choice for always-on prerecorded looping.

In the reviewed official material, YouTube specifically identifies Gyre as a cloud 24/7 candidate. That is useful evidence of fit, not a comparative reliability test. StreamNeo is another cloud option; compare current service terms and capabilities directly before deciding.

What to check before you choose

  • Playback model: Confirm whether the service loops continuously or plays one scheduled video and ends.
  • Runtime: A cloud service does not depend on your home PC staying on. A local encoder does.
  • Input and output limits: Check video duration, file size, resolution, frame rate, storage, and any plan restrictions against your actual files.
  • Control and recovery: Find out how you monitor a stream, change a playlist, and recover from an interruption. Do not assume any provider guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
  • Replay needs: If you need a complete archive, plan around YouTube’s 12-hour threshold; a longer continuous broadcast should not be assumed to produce one complete replay.
  • Rights and monetization: Verify that you have rights to stream every asset and that the channel’s content meets YouTube’s policies. A loop itself does not make content eligible for monetization.
  • Price and availability: Check current pricing, terms, and availability with each provider; the options are not supported by a verified head-to-head price or reliability comparison.

Prerequisites for going live on YouTube

YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s current guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. YouTube also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.

For an encoder workflow, YouTube requires the stream URL and stream key. Do not publish it in a description, screenshot, or shared document. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and watching stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

How to loop prerecorded video with OBS

OBS is the local, do-it-yourself option: it sends the selected media to YouTube while OBS is running. You need a computer that can stay powered on, a reliable internet connection, the video file or playlist, and access to YouTube Live Control Room. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video source behavior in its Media Sources guide.

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming. Complete channel verification and any required enablement before the planned broadcast. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Interface labels can vary; use the stream settings presented by YouTube for your channel.
  3. Add the video in OBS. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Add the local file and enable Loop so playback restarts when it reaches the end. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, select the files, and keep Loop Playlist enabled if you want the playlist to repeat. OBS must be able to access the files whenever it plays them.
  4. Configure the YouTube connection. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect through the available YouTube account option. If entering details manually, use YouTube’s server URL and key. Keep the key private.
  5. Set video and output settings. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and your available upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations list H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds; YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain them. For exact values at other resolutions, consult YouTube’s encoder settings.
  6. Test before the long run. Start a short private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, check that both picture and sound reach YouTube, and inspect stream health in Live Control Room. Test the actual file and playlist transition, not just a sample image.
  7. Start and maintain the stream. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the preview and health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, keep the media storage available, and monitor power, network, and OBS for as long as the local stream is expected to run.

Technical settings that matter

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Do not select a higher output than the source or connection can sustain. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The appropriate bitrate changes with resolution, frame rate, and codec. These values describe YouTube’s current encoder guidance, not a minimum internet-plan speed: allow additional upload headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic.

Keyframes and codec

YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Select a codec and settings supported by both your encoder and the ingest workflow, then test them before relying on a long broadcast.

Audio and source continuity

Check that the source file has the intended audio track, that the OBS audio meter responds, and that playback does not fall silent or jump unexpectedly at the loop point. If a playlist contains files with different formats or audio levels, test every transition. A picture-only preview does not confirm that YouTube is receiving usable sound.

How continuous streaming affects YouTube replays

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a broadcast longer than 12 hours being saved as one complete replay. If preserving a replay matters, plan separate sessions under that threshold and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. A service that plays continuously does not change YouTube’s archive behavior.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization

YouTube says all live-stream content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A video being prerecorded or looping does not exempt it from those rules. Get the necessary rights for the video, music, images, and other material before streaming.

Monetization is a separate question from whether software can send a stream. YouTube’s monetization policy may exclude repetitive or mass-produced content with little educational value, commentary, narrative, or variation. Reused material may need significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value to qualify. Permission to use material alone does not establish eligibility under the reused-content policy. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated playback.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled, select the correct stream in Live Control Room, and re-copy the current server URL and key. Check that the encoder is using the matching destination and RTMPS if available.
  • The stream starts but buffers or drops: Compare the OBS bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain it, and check for competing network traffic or unstable Wi-Fi.
  • The video ends instead of looping: For a single file, verify Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a VLC playlist, confirm the files are selected and Loop Playlist is on.
  • Playback stops after the computer is left alone: Check sleep, hibernation, scheduled restart, power management, disk availability, and whether the computer or OBS closed. A local workflow depends on all of these remaining operational.
  • Viewers hear no audio: Check the file’s audio track, OBS audio mixer, and monitoring meters; then confirm sound in the YouTube preview. Test the loop transition for gaps or format changes.
  • The replay is incomplete or missing: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, do not assume a complete single archive; check YouTube Studio and plan shorter sessions if replay preservation is essential.
  • A stream is live but not monetizing: Streaming software cannot establish policy eligibility. Review rights, originality, added value, and YouTube’s monetization rules for the channel and material.
