OBS Studio is the best no-cost starting point if you want to run a continuous YouTube live stream from a low-cost PC and are willing to configure and test it. It is flexible and YouTube lists it as open-source software at no charge, but no particular PC is guaranteed to sustain a 24/7 stream. Start with a simple scene at 720p30, use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, and test the actual computer and internet connection before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Which software should you choose?
- StreamNeo — best if you want the stream to continue without running your PC. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. See StreamNeo.
- OBS Studio — best no-cost local-PC encoder. Choose it if you want flexible control and are prepared to configure, test and maintain the PC and connection.
- Other encoders or dedicated hardware — for a specific workflow or an existing hardware budget. YouTube lists software and hardware encoders, but that listing alone does not show that another option is better for a low-cost PC in India.
Compare any option by total cost, whether it relies on your local PC, encoding load, recovery after interruption and support for continuous prerecorded streaming. Check current pricing, availability and stream limits before choosing an alternative; a cloud service should not be assumed cheaper without comparing its actual total cost.
What OBS can—and cannot—do on a low-cost PC
OBS runs the encoder on your computer. How much work that takes varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS explicitly cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording. A simple static scene and modest output are sensible starting choices, not guarantees of continuous operation. See the OBS system requirements.
Before configuring an always-on setup, confirm that your YouTube channel can stream. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Its live encoder information explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for YouTube.

Set up OBS and YouTube for a continuous stream
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. Complete the channel’s live-streaming setup and allow for up to 24 hours if this is the first time enabling it. Do not plan a launch until the channel is able to stream.
- Install OBS Studio and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its suggested starting configuration, then keep the scene simple. Avoid adding animated overlays, browser sources or other processing-heavy elements until you know how the PC performs.
- Create a YouTube live stream and connect OBS. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the key using the available connection method. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Choose a conservative video output. Start at 1280 × 720, 30 fps (720p30). If the PC or connection cannot sustain the test, reduce output to 854 × 480, 30 fps (480p30), or lower the bitrate. Do not assume a resolution is reliable merely because OBS offers it.
- Set the encoder baseline. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. The exact location and names of encoder controls can vary with the selected OBS output mode and encoder.
- Set bitrate with the codec-specific guidance in mind. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at 720p30 and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum; at 480p30 it recommends 4 Mbps and lists 0.4 Mbps as the minimum. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding 720p30 figures are 6 Mbps recommended and 2 Mbps minimum; at 480p30, 3 Mbps recommended and 0.3 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube’s platform figures, not proof that a particular Indian connection can maintain them. For a low-cost PC, begin with H.264 unless you have confirmed your encoder supports another codec efficiently.
- Test the real workload before going live for an extended period. Use the actual scene, representative audio and movement, intended resolution and bitrate. Prefer wired Ethernet if available. Watch OBS output and YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the broadcast and monitoring stream health.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube Studio rather than assuming a successful start means the setup will stay healthy. Confirm that video and audio are reaching YouTube and that stream health remains acceptable.
YouTube’s current guidance for encoder settings and bitrates is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Its bitrate values are recommendations and minimums, not guaranteed connection requirements for every viewer or a promise of performance from a given PC.
Check the internet connection and PC as a system
For streaming, sustained upload capacity matters; a brief speed-test result does not establish that the connection can hold a bitrate continuously. OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, and too many can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when matching bitrate to a connection. Treat that as an OBS troubleshooting heuristic, not a universal rule or assurance for a long stream.

OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Ethernet can remove one source of variability, but it cannot fix an inadequate service plan, ISP congestion or insufficient upload capacity. Power interruptions, a PC crash or a home-network outage can also stop a locally encoded stream. Official guidance does not establish a low-cost PC specification or Indian home connection that guarantees 24/7 uptime, so validate your specific setup rather than treating compatibility as a reliability rating.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled on the channel, the correct stream is selected, and the stream key in OBS matches YouTube Studio. If this is the channel’s first stream, allow for the possible enablement delay.
- OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health worsens: Lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate, switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, and test again. A high download speed does not solve weak upload capacity.
- The PC struggles even when the network is stable: Simplify the scene and reduce resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that CPU demand depends on encoder choice, output settings and scene complexity; compatibility alone does not show that the machine can stream continuously.
- The stream stops after a power or network interruption: Check whether the PC, router and internet connection recovered, then confirm OBS is still connected and YouTube receives the stream. A local-PC setup depends on those components remaining operational; a wired cable cannot prevent ISP or power failures.
- The stream starts but picture or sound is wrong: Check the selected OBS video and audio sources and repeat a test using representative motion and audio. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to keep a low-cost PC and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live by looping videos uploaded to its cloud service. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The same features are included regardless of billing length; UPI and cards work in India, while card checkout is available worldwide.
