For a Linux desktop where you want to build scenes and control the broadcast, start with OBS Studio. For a fixed playlist on a headless Ubuntu host, FFmpeg supervised as a systemd service is a leaner command-line option, but it calls for more hands-on setup and maintenance. Neither choice by itself guarantees a stable 24/7 stream: the computer, network, encoder settings, recovery plan, and music rights all matter.
Choose software for how you will run the stream

The practical choice between OBS and FFmpeg depends on whether you need live production controls or want to automate a fixed program. This is a workflow-based recommendation, not the result of a head-to-head endurance test. For OBS, the project lists Linux/Unix support and requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU plus an X window system or Wayland; OBS cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene will run successfully. Set up OBS on Linux for a kirtan program
Build and test the program before going live
- Install OBS using the instructions for your Linux distribution from the OBS Project download page. Confirm the desktop session is running X or Wayland and that the GPU supports OpenGL 3.3.
- Create a scene with the visual you intend to leave on air, such as a still image or a prepared video background. Add the audio source for the performance or recording, and check levels so the signal is audible without clipping.
- Run a representative test using the actual audio, visual, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you plan to use. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and verify the sound and picture from a separate playback device or account before relying on the setup.
OBS can send HLS output, and YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support it. For a straightforward audio-led kirtan stream, RTMPS is generally the simpler starting point; HLS is useful for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, but its segmented delivery has higher latency and requires the documented segment and HTTPS POST/PUT behavior. Connect OBS to your YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the broadcast in Live Control Room. Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- In Live Control Room’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream configuration. Use the URL shown for your own broadcast. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when available; it encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL. Never share the key: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the intended feed before making the broadcast public or scheduled. Keep the key private and regenerate it through YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube provides an RTMPS URL in Live Control Room’s stream settings, and OBS’s maintained service configuration includes a YouTube RTMPS preset with primary and backup endpoints. Use FFmpeg for a fixed playlist on a headless host
FFmpeg can fit a stream that repeats the same cleared audio/video program without scene switching. A community-maintained Ubuntu VPS example shows a local media loop sent to YouTube and configured as a systemd service. Treat that as a starting pattern: it does not establish that a particular command, host, or service design is reliable or secure for every channel. Community FFmpeg/Ubuntu example
- Prepare local media files you have the right to stream. Decide whether the output is audio with a still image, a simple video loop, or a playlist; test playback locally before connecting YouTube.
- Install FFmpeg using your distribution’s package manager and confirm the installed build can read your media formats and use the encoder you intend to run.
- Configure the input loop, output video/audio encoding, and YouTube RTMPS destination using the URL and stream key from your own Live Control Room. Keep credentials out of public scripts, logs, and shared configuration files.
- Run a short test and inspect YouTube stream health and the received audio/video. Only after it works should you configure the process for service supervision and automatic restart.
- Create and enable a systemd unit appropriate to your host. Set a restart policy, ensure the service starts after networking is available, and check it with
systemctl statusand the journal. Confirm restart behavior by deliberately stopping the process during a test, then verify that both FFmpeg and YouTube recover as expected.
The exact FFmpeg command and systemd unit depend on input formats, codecs, host hardware, and the desired output. Do not copy a command blindly: validate each option against your installed FFmpeg build and test the complete pipeline before a long broadcast.

Set encoder settings for a sustainable stream
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its stereo audio recommendation is 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise of playback quality or uninterrupted delivery. YouTube encoder settings

Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually in use rather than selecting a generic maximum. YouTube advises checking upload speed, testing representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. A static image over music may not gain anything meaningful from higher video resolution. Leave capacity for other network use, and prefer wired networking where practical.

Plan continuity, archives, and recovery
- Test the full operating path: verify what happens after a network interruption, encoder crash, host reboot, or YouTube disconnect. Keep a written recovery procedure and know how to check both the local process and Live Control Room.
- Match supervision to the deployment: on a desktop, account for the machine, session, and network staying available. On a remote host, configure and test service restart and networking dependencies. No universal uptime guarantee follows from either setup.
- Plan around the archive limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not assume it will produce one automatically archived video. Decide how recurring sessions, restarts, and archives will be managed.
Clear music rights before broadcasting continuously
Kirtan may be traditional or newly performed, but the recording, arrangement, composition, or performance may still have rights holders. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the streamer to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content; a match may trigger a warning, interruption, or termination. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Before launch, confirm rights for each recording and composition, the territories covered, and any required Content ID allowlisting. YouTube’s official live-stream terms and copyright guidance for live streams describe these obligations and enforcement.
