Twilio is the clearest starting point when you want one provider to handle both call outcomes and text sending in n8n. Its documented n8n node can send SMS/MMS, and its Voice service documents an unanswered-call status callback. Plivo is another documented n8n option for SMS/MMS and voice actions, but confirm that its call events match your missed-call workflow. Telnyx is worth comparing for its published US message-part rate, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a native n8n node or a ready-made missed-call trigger path.
The key distinction is that an SMS provider does not necessarily detect missed calls just because it can send texts. Your phone system must report an eligible unanswered call to n8n before the workflow can send a text back.
Which SMS provider is best for n8n missed-call automation?
For a provider-centered setup where the call event and follow-up text can both run through Twilio, Twilio has the strongest documented fit: n8n documents its Twilio node, and Twilio Voice documents call status callbacks including no-answer. Plivo is a documented alternative for SMS/MMS and voice actions in n8n. Neither fact alone proves that a particular business number or call flow will expose exactly the unanswered-call event you need.
Telnyx’s published US price is a useful comparison point, but the available evidence does not verify its native n8n support or an end-to-end missed-call trigger recipe. Treat it as an API candidate that may require generic HTTP configuration, not as an equivalent plug-in choice.

What a missed-call text-back workflow needs
The workflow has two separate jobs: detect a qualifying call outcome, then send a message. For Twilio, the official Programmable Voice documentation defines no-answer as “The call ended without being answered.” A configured StatusCallback can report call status asynchronously, but you still need to configure a call flow that sends the relevant event to an endpoint n8n can receive. - Based on EC21-A module for Quectel
- USB Port Interface
- Control via AT Commands
- Support FDD LTE: B2/B4/B12, WCDMA: B2/B4/B5
- A call event source: The phone provider handling calls to your business number must expose a status such as unanswered/no-answer.
- An n8n entry point: The event must reach an n8n webhook or another supported trigger path with enough information to identify the call and caller.
- A filter: Branch on the actual unanswered status so answered calls do not receive an inappropriate follow-up.
- A suitable sending number: Send from an approved business number that fits your routing, caller-ID, destination, and messaging requirements.
- Operational handling: Log the event and send result, guard against duplicate callbacks, define retry behavior, and process replies and opt-outs.
How to choose against your phone setup
Before comparing API features or headline rates, check whether the provider can observe calls made to the number your business actually uses. A provider’s ability to send SMS does not establish that it can see calls answered, forwarded, or missed by another phone system.
- Trace the number and call route. Confirm whether the business can use, port, forward, or otherwise connect its current number to the service. Check whether caller ID and the call outcome remain available to the workflow.
- Verify the exact event. Look for an unanswered/no-answer status and a webhook or supported trigger that can deliver it to n8n. Do not assume a general voice-call action reports incoming missed calls.
- Match the n8n integration to the task. Confirm that a documented node supports the specific send or receive operation you need. With a generic HTTP API route, plan for credential handling and request/response configuration.
- Calculate all-in messaging cost. Compare inbound and outbound messages, segments or parts, carrier surcharges, number rent, potential registration fees, and volume tiers—not just the base per-message figure.
- Check geography and controls. Confirm number inventory, supported destination countries, throughput, local carrier rules, delivery-status visibility, webhook validation, logging, retries, duplicate prevention, and opt-out handling.
The evidence here does not establish a universal provider winner for every phone system or country, nor a comparative reliability winner. Your actual route, number availability, and event support are decisive.

- It has perfect software function, supports TCP/UDP transparent transmission, SMS transmission, HTTPD Client mode, and AT command configuration. Also, it is simple to configure, has high reliability and built-in hardware watchdog, supports FOTA upgrading.
- USR-G771 has wide-voltage power supply terminals and DC interfaces, standard RS232 and RS485 interfaces meets the needs of different application scenarios.
- The serial device is connected with the network server through G771 todeliver bi-directional transparent transmission of data. The product supports 4 socket links, and keeps these 4 links independent of each other.
- Registration Package plus Heartbeat Package.A registration package is sent to a server to identify the device, and a heartbeat packet is sent to a server to judge the active state of the device.A heartbeat packet is sent to a serial terminal to actively collect data.
US texting requirements to account for
For Twilio, application-to-person SMS/MMS sent to US recipients over a 10-digit long-code number requires A2P 10DLC registration. Twilio’s guidance covers brand and campaign registration, opt-in flow and message samples, and consent disclosures such as message frequency, message and data rates, and opt-out instructions including STOP. Requirements vary by route, recipient geography, number type, provider rules, and applicable law, so confirm current guidance for your setup. Twilio A2P 10DLC documentation
Keep the first text relevant to the caller’s inquiry, identify the business, and honor opt-outs. Registration guidance is a practical setup consideration, not a complete legal analysis or proof that every provider applies identical requirements.

Example workflow logic
A provider-neutral design is:
- The phone provider reports a call outcome.
- n8n receives the event and checks that the call is eligible and unanswered.
- The workflow sends one concise text from the selected business number.
- n8n records the call and message result, then routes any reply or opt-out according to the business’s process.
This is an architecture outline, not a tested end-to-end recipe. Configure and verify the event for the specific phone-number and call-flow setup before relying on it.
