Verdict: The iPhone 6 is the narrow overall winner for the 2014 year-end market. Its redesign, 4.7-inch screen, fast A8 processor, dependable camera, iOS ecosystem and broad carrier availability made it the most balanced choice. That is a retrospective judgment, not an uncontested fact: the HTC One (M8) was arguably better early in the year, while the LG G3, Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3 and OnePlus One each won important categories.

  • Best overall at the end of 2014: iPhone 6
  • Best Android design and polish: HTC One (M8)
  • Best value: OnePlus One, subject to its invitation system
  • Best display: LG G3
  • Best durability and flexibility: Samsung Galaxy S5
  • Best battery-focused option: Sony Xperia Z3

Why there was no single, obvious 2014 winner

“Best smartphone for 2014” changes with the date of the judgment. The HTC One (M8) arrived in March and was named the best smartphone by TechRadar before several major rivals existed. The LG G3 changed the display conversation in the middle of the year. Sony’s Xperia Z3 and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 arrived later, and Apple’s iPhone 6 went on sale September 19. A fair year-end comparison therefore cannot simply repeat an early-March award.

This ranking weighs everyday usability, design, display, speed, software, camera performance, battery, durability, storage flexibility, price and availability. Processor numbers, megapixels and resolution are evidence, not automatic proof of superiority.

The 2014 shortlist

The core late-year comparison is the iPhone 6, HTC One (M8), Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3, a group also compared by Gadgets 360. The wider field matters for particular buyers:

Why the iPhone 6 wins overall

Apple announced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on September 9, 2014, and released them on September 19. The iPhone 6 used a 4.7-inch 1334×750 display, Apple’s A8 processor and iOS 8; Apple also introduced Apple Pay with this generation. U.S. contract pricing was $199 for 16GB, $299 for 64GB and $399 for 128GB, as reported in Apple’s announcement.

The important change was balance. The 4.7-inch body was more comfortable for many users than earlier small iPhones, performance was consistently fast, the camera produced dependable point-and-shoot results, and iOS offered a mature app ecosystem and predictable integration with Apple computers, tablets and accessories. Carrier support was extensive in the United States. Apple reported more than four million preorders in the first 24 hours and more than 10 million combined iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales in the opening weekend; those figures demonstrate demand, not objective proof of quality.

There are real caveats. The 16GB model left too little practical space for a heavy photo, video or app user, and the 64GB version was the more sensible configuration. There was no microSD slot. The standard iPhone 6 lacked optical image stabilization, which was reserved for the Plus. Android rivals offered higher-resolution displays, removable batteries or expandable storage for less money. The iPhone 6 wins because fewer compromises affected more people, not because it led every specification chart.

Best Android: HTC One (M8)

The M8 was the strongest early-2014 all-rounder and remains the best Android choice when design and polish matter most. Its aluminum construction felt premium, front-facing BoomSound speakers were unusually good, Snapdragon 801 performance was smooth, and HTC Sense 6 added useful motion gestures without overwhelming the system. A microSD slot improved storage flexibility.

Its Duo Camera added depth effects, but the 4MP UltraPixel main sensor captured less fine detail than competing cameras in good light and could not record 4K video. The battery was non-removable, and the phone was thicker and heavier than the iPhone 6. HTC’s launch information identifies its Snapdragon 801, Android 4.4 KitKat and Sense 6 software. For a year-end buyer, those camera limitations kept it from the overall crown; for an Android enthusiast who valued build quality, audio and ergonomics, they were acceptable trade-offs.

Category winners and their trade-offs

Best display: LG G3

The G3 brought a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 Quad HD panel, narrow bezels and an excellent screen-to-body ratio. Its 13MP camera added laser autofocus and optical image stabilization, and rear-mounted controls were distinctive. Contemporary coverage from Tech Advisor treated it as the first major flagship to make Quad HD a headline feature.

Higher resolution did not automatically mean a better experience: it increased power demands, and some versions showed thermal or performance limits. The plastic body and merely adequate battery life also reduced its claim to overall leadership.

Best practical feature set: Samsung Galaxy S5

The Galaxy S5 combined a 16MP camera with 4K video, a removable battery, microSD expansion, an AMOLED display, fingerprint reader and heart-rate sensor. Its IP67 rating meant dust protection and resistance to immersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes under the relevant test conditions; it was not invulnerable or suitable for unrestricted underwater use. Digital Trends documents those features.

Samsung’s broad U.S. carrier availability was valuable, but the plastic construction felt less premium than the M8 or iPhone 6. TouchWiz was busier and less consistent than HTC’s interface, and its swipe-based fingerprint reader was less convenient than Apple’s Touch ID.

Best battery-focused choice: Sony Xperia Z3

The Xperia Z3 paired a large battery with water resistance, a 20.7MP camera, slim construction and strong multimedia features. It is the sensible specialist pick for travelers and users who value endurance over ecosystem simplicity. Sony’s camera processing did not always turn the impressive sensor specification into class-leading photographs, and carrier availability varied substantially by market.

Best value: OnePlus One

The OnePlus One offered flagship-class hardware for roughly half the price of major competitors in contemporary comparisons. That value is real only when the phone can actually be obtained: the invitation-only purchasing process, uncertain stock, limited carrier compatibility and less established warranty support made it a less predictable purchase. Tech Advisor highlighted both its pricing advantage and the availability problem.

Best large-screen and productivity options

The iPhone 6 Plus offered a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 display, optical image stabilization and stronger battery characteristics than the standard iPhone 6. It was a better choice for readers who wanted a large iPhone, but its size and price made it unsuitable as a universal recommendation. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 served a different audience with a large display, high-end hardware and stylus-based productivity.

Camera: why megapixels did not settle the argument

Phone Main camera Best interpretation
iPhone 6 8MP Most consistent point-and-shoot processing and autofocus
iPhone 6 Plus 8MP with optical stabilization Better for handheld low-light and steadier shots
Galaxy S5 16MP, 4K video Feature-rich daylight camera and fast autofocus
LG G3 13MP with laser autofocus and optical stabilization Strong focusing and stabilization package
Xperia Z3 20.7MP High-resolution, video-oriented hardware; processing varied
HTC One (M8) 4MP UltraPixel with depth camera Distinctive low-light and depth approach, but limited detail

The fairest camera verdicts are therefore use-case based: iPhone 6 for consistency, iPhone 6 Plus or G3 for stabilization, Galaxy S5 for features, Xperia Z3 for sensor resolution and video ambitions, and M8 for the most unusual camera system. Resolution alone cannot establish quality.

Software, ecosystem and availability

iOS 8 offered simplicity, a large app catalog and reliable integration with Apple hardware. Android offered deeper customization, easier file handling and, on most flagships here, microSD expansion. HTC Sense, Samsung TouchWiz, LG’s interface and Sony’s lighter skin differed in polish and update timing. Carrier variants could also change processors, radio bands, storage and software schedules, so a U.S. model should not be assumed identical to every regional version.

Ecosystem preference was one of the decisive 2014 buying factors. Someone already using a Mac, iPad or Apple accessories could reasonably value the iPhone more; an Android user invested in Google services, removable storage or Windows file transfer could prefer an Android flagship despite the iPhone’s stronger overall balance.

Choose by user type

  • Want the safest all-round recommendation at the end of 2014: iPhone 6, preferably 64GB.
  • Want premium Android hardware and excellent speakers: HTC One (M8).
  • Want the sharpest screen: LG G3.
  • Need a removable battery, microSD and water resistance: Galaxy S5.
  • Travel frequently or prioritize endurance: Xperia Z3.
  • Want flagship specifications at the lowest price: OnePlus One, if an invitation and compatible service were available.
  • Prefer a large screen, stabilization or stylus productivity: iPhone 6 Plus or Galaxy Note 4.
  • Want clean, inexpensive Android: Nexus 5, accepting its older hardware.

How the verdict changes through 2014

  1. Early 2014: HTC One (M8) was a defensible overall winner because of its design, speakers, performance and software polish.
  2. Mid-2014: LG G3 became the headline Android choice for its compact-for-size 5.5-inch Quad HD screen and improved camera focusing.
  3. Late 2014: Xperia Z3 and Galaxy Note 4 broadened the field, while the iPhone 6 supplied the strongest combination of design, performance, camera, software and availability.
  4. Full-year retrospective: iPhone 6 wins overall; M8 wins Android design, OnePlus One wins value, G3 wins display, S5 wins practical flexibility and Z3 wins battery-focused use.

Important context for a 2026 reader

This is a historical ranking, not a recommendation to use a 2014 phone as a modern daily driver. Before buying one today, check 4G/5G network compatibility, battery condition, replacement-part availability, current app support and the absence of modern security updates. Used-device prices should not be compared directly with 2014 launch prices, and contemporary awards should not be treated as timeless truth.
