The Skullcandy Hesh Evo does not pair with the Skullcandy App, so it has no manufacturer-provided custom EQ inside that app. Use the equalizer in your phone, computer, streaming service, or media player instead. The curves below are practical starting points: they are not Skullcandy measurements, and you should adjust them for your fit, hearing, source quality, and preferred volume.

Start with the preset that matches what you are listening to, change one band at a time in 1 dB steps, and reduce the player preamp or overall volume if the sound clips.

Recommended Hesh Evo starting curves

Use the table as a neutral starting point rather than a permanent target. “Low mids” and “upper mids” are separate controls on some five-band equalisers, while other interfaces combine or rename them. If your equaliser has fewer bands, make the closest available adjustment and keep the change modest.

Use Bass Low mids Mids Upper mids Treble Purpose
Music +2 dB 0 dB +1 dB +1 dB +1 dB Adds weight while keeping vocals and detail present.
Podcasts −2 dB −1 dB +1 dB +2 dB +1 dB Reduces bass masking and brings speech presence forward.
Calls −3 dB −1 dB +2 dB +2 dB +1 dB Prioritises intelligibility over warmth.

These values are editorial starting points. Skullcandy’s published Hesh Evo documentation does not provide a numeric custom-EQ curve or a call-specific recipe.

What each preset is trying to fix

Music: a small lift without losing vocals

The music curve adds a little bass weight and a restrained lift through the vocal and detail regions. That combination suits tracks that sound thin at a moderate volume, but it avoids the large low-end boost that can cover kick-drum definition, guitars, or lead vocals. Leave low mids flat initially; raising them as well can make dense mixes sound congested.

If a particular recording already has heavy bass, reduce the bass control back toward 0 dB rather than increasing treble to compensate. If cymbals or “s” sounds become tiring, return the treble or upper-mid control to 0 dB before changing anything else. Make changes while listening to a familiar track with both vocals and instruments, not only an isolated bass test.

Podcasts: remove masking, then restore speech presence

Spoken-word recordings often contain room rumble, microphone handling noise, or low-frequency music beds. The small bass and low-mid cuts reduce that competition. The mid and upper-mid lifts place consonants and vocal articulation farther forward without requiring a large volume increase.

Use the podcast curve for interviews, lectures, and audiobooks as well as podcasts. If a host sounds nasal or harsh, undo the upper-mid boost first. If voices still sound distant, raise the mids by only 1 dB and recheck at your normal listening level. A recording with aggressive compression may need less treble than this starting point.

Calls: intelligibility first

The call curve makes the strongest cuts below the speech region and the largest lifts through the mids and upper mids. It is intended to make the other person easier to understand in a noisy room, not to make music sound natural. For a long conference, reduce the upper-mid or treble lift if listening fatigue develops.

Headphone playback EQ changes what you hear from the call. It does not automatically change the microphone signal sent to the other participants. If people say your voice is muffled, use the meeting app’s microphone controls, move to a quieter position, or change the input device; changing the Hesh Evo playback curve will not repair their recording of you.

How to apply an EQ to Hesh Evo

  1. Connect the headphones and identify the audio source. Pair the Hesh Evo with the phone, computer, or other device that is actually playing the audio. An EQ applied in a different app or on a different device will not affect the signal you hear.
  2. Open the source’s audio controls. Look in the player or streaming service for a menu named Settings, Playback, Audio, Sound, or Equalizer. On a computer, the control may be in the media player, operating-system sound enhancements, or the manufacturer’s audio utility. Menu names and availability vary by device, operating-system version, and service.
  3. Disable competing presets. Turn off a bass boost, loudness mode, spatial effect, or a second equaliser before entering a manual curve. Two active tone controls make the result difficult to predict and can create clipping.
  4. Set the preamp or master level conservatively. If the equaliser exposes a preamp, lower it before applying positive boosts. If it does not, reduce the player volume slightly. Boosting several bands can create peaks even when the source file itself is not loud.
  5. Enter the closest available band values. Apply the music, podcast, or call row that matches your use. When a device offers only broad sliders, use the bass slider for bass, the centre slider for mids, and the treble slider for treble; avoid trying to force a precise value that the interface cannot represent.
  6. Listen for 30 to 60 seconds at your normal level. Use a familiar passage containing speech, bass, and high-frequency detail. Compare with EQ bypassed at an approximately equal loudness so that the louder option does not seem automatically better.
  7. Retune in 1 dB steps. Change only one band at a time. Keep a note of the value that helped and the value that introduced boom, harshness, or hiss. Small changes are easier to reverse than a large “smile” curve.
  8. Save separate presets when the software allows it. Name them Music, Podcasts, and Calls, and check that the correct preset loads for each app. Some systems apply one global EQ, while others keep settings per player.

Where the EQ may live

Phone or tablet

Some mobile players and streaming services provide their own equaliser under playback settings. Others expose only a few fixed presets, and some provide no EQ at all. If the app has no manual control, check the device’s Sound or Accessibility audio settings for a system-wide equaliser. A system setting may affect every app, so remember to turn it off or switch presets when you finish listening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Computer

Desktop music players commonly include a graphic or parametric equaliser. If your player lacks one, the operating system or audio-driver utility may offer sound enhancements. Apply the curve only once: a player EQ layered on top of a system “bass boost” can produce a very different result from the table and can clip at ordinary volume.

Streaming and media services

A service’s equaliser normally affects that service’s playback only. If music sounds corrected but a video-call application does not, the two programs are using separate audio paths. Set the call curve in the application or system path used for the call, and verify it with a short test call before an important meeting.

Fine-tune by the symptom you hear

Symptom First adjustment Reason
Vocals disappear behind bass Lower bass by 1 dB; if needed, lower low mids by 1 dB. Less low-frequency masking leaves the vocal range clearer.
Voices sound thin Return bass or low mids 1 dB toward 0. The cuts may be removing warmth from the recording.
Speech is muffled Raise mids by 1 dB, then upper mids by 1 dB if necessary. These areas carry much of the articulation that distinguishes consonants.
“S” sounds or cymbals hurt Lower treble first, then upper mids. Reducing the highest boost usually preserves more vocal body.
Sound is boomy in a small room Lower bass and low mids one step at a time. Room noise and seal can exaggerate low frequencies.
Audio crackles after boosting Lower the preamp or overall volume before changing the curve. The equaliser may be clipping its output.
One ear sounds different Check the ear-pad seal, fit, and source balance before EQ. An EQ cannot correct a physical seal problem or an incorrect left-right balance setting.

Prevent clipping and protect listening comfort

Positive EQ values add energy at selected bands. Digital players can run out of headroom when several bands are boosted, producing crackles, flattened transients, or obvious distortion. Lower the preamp if available; otherwise lower the player’s master volume and leave the headphone volume at a comfortable level. Do not compensate for distortion by turning the headphones louder.

Check the result at the level you normally use. A curve that sounds exciting for a few seconds at high volume may become tiring over an hour. If you have to keep raising volume to understand speech, address the recording, background noise, fit, or hearing needs rather than continually increasing treble.

Fit, source quality, and recording differences

The same Hesh Evo curve will not sound identical for every listener. Ear-pad position and seal change bass more than a 1 dB adjustment, and glasses, hair, or movement can break that seal. Re-seat the headphones before creating a new preset. A low-bitrate stream, noisy interview, or heavily processed call may also limit clarity that EQ cannot restore.

Use a representative sample of your own content. A bass-heavy music master, a quiet studio podcast, and a phone call compressed by a conferencing service have different balances. Treat the three rows as task-specific starting points, not as a claim that every recording needs the same correction.

Hesh Evo capabilities that affect setup

Skullcandy lists Bluetooth 5.0 for Hesh Evo. Its support information states up to 36+ hours of play time, with 10 minutes of charging providing 3+ hours of playtime and a full charge taking 1 hour 45 minutes. The same support information says you can listen up to 30+ feet (10+ metres) from the paired device, although the connection experience can vary with the environment. These figures describe the headphone hardware and connection; they do not add an EQ or change how an individual source app handles audio.

Because EQ is supplied by the playback device or software, moving between a phone, computer, and tablet can mean moving between different presets or no preset at all. If the sound suddenly changes after switching devices, first check which EQ is active before rebuilding the curve.

A practical preset workflow

For a music session

  1. Start with the Music row and set the player preamp lower if your software provides one.
  2. Play a familiar track with a vocal, kick drum, bass line, and cymbals.
  3. Adjust bass down if the kick becomes soft or the vocal recedes; adjust treble or upper mids down if cymbals become sharp.
  4. Save the result under a music-specific name and leave other app presets unchanged.

For a podcast or audiobook

  1. Select the Podcasts row and listen to both a male and a female speaker if possible.
  2. If voices remain covered by music or room noise, lower bass one more step before adding more upper mids.
  3. If consonants become piercing, undo the upper-mid or treble change rather than raising volume.

For a meeting or voice call

  1. Apply the Calls row in the audio path used by the meeting application.
  2. Join the app’s test call or preview and confirm that the other person’s voice is clearer at the same loudness.
  3. Ask separately whether your microphone is clear; playback EQ cannot repair the transmitted microphone signal.
  4. After the meeting, switch back to the Music or Podcasts preset if your system uses one global equaliser.

When to leave EQ flat

Flat is a valid choice when the recording already sounds balanced, when your player applies an unknown hidden preset, or when you are comparing mixes accurately. It is also the safest troubleshooting baseline: bypass all EQ, confirm that the Hesh Evo connection and fit are normal, then add only the curve you need. If bypassed audio still crackles, drops out, or sounds uneven, the cause is not solved by adding more EQ.

For most listeners, the best Hesh Evo setup is therefore simple: use the Music curve for a little extra weight, the Podcasts curve when speech is masked, and the Calls curve when intelligibility matters most. Keep changes small, control headroom, and let the playback device—not the Skullcandy app—hold the presets.
