They are not interchangeable: Siri AI is designed to work with iPhone context and app actions; ChatGPT can handle supported requests through Apple Intelligence or in its own app; and Siri can launch Copilot’s iOS app into a voice conversation.
The right choice depends on whether “more capable” means better conversation, help with what’s on your screen, or actions across your iPhone. Apple’s Siri AI is in beta as of October 4, 2026, and its availability is limited by device, software, language, and region.
Which Siri alternative fits what you want to do?

These are different routes to AI help, not three equivalent replacements for the iPhone’s system assistant. Apple’s documentation describes Siri AI as having access to personal and onscreen context and systemwide actions. ChatGPT’s Siri integration is an extension for supported requests, while Microsoft documents Siri as a way to launch Copilot’s app.
What does Apple’s newer Siri AI do?
Apple describes Siri AI as a more conversational assistant that can understand personal context across messages, email, and photos; understand onscreen content; draw on broader world knowledge; handle follow-up conversations; and take more actions across apps. Apple also lists visual intelligence and a dedicated Siri app. These are Apple’s announced capabilities, not results from an independent head-to-head performance test. Where its iPhone integration matters
Apple’s examples illustrate the intended advantage: ask Siri to find a recipe in messages or email and add its ingredients to Reminders, or find games mentioned on a webpage currently on screen and put them in Calendar. Those examples show the kind of context-aware, multi-step work Apple says Siri AI can do; they should not be read as independently verified success rates.
At launch, Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi called it “a dramatically more capable and conversational assistant designed to help users find information and get things done throughout the day.” That is Apple’s characterization of its product, not an outside assessment. Eligibility and availability
As of October 4, 2026, Siri AI is in beta. Apple’s iOS 27 support guidance says it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Siri and the device must be set to a supported language; Apple says English is the initial language availability and that the feature is initially unavailable in the EU. Usage limits may apply. Check Apple’s current device and language requirements before relying on a particular capability, since availability can change.
How to use ChatGPT on an iPhone
ChatGPT offers two distinct options: open the ChatGPT app and use the service directly, or connect ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence so Siri can send supported requests to it. The extension can be useful when a request benefits from ChatGPT’s response but you want to invoke it through Siri or an Apple Intelligence feature.

Connect ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Set Up.
- Choose whether to use ChatGPT without an account or sign in to an existing account. OpenAI says signing in is required if you want chats saved to ChatGPT history.
- Use Siri or supported Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, to send a request to ChatGPT when appropriate.
Apple’s examples include asking Siri to compose a haiku or suggest activities, asking about an open photo, and summarizing an open PDF. Availability of the extension depends on whether the ChatGPT app and service are available in your location. See Apple’s iPhone instructions for ChatGPT requests and OpenAI’s setup guide.
What gets sent to ChatGPT
Apple says you choose what to send. A request and its attachments, along with limited related information such as your timezone, country, device type, language, and the feature used, are sent to ChatGPT. You may be asked to confirm before a request is sent; Apple documents a setting to turn off confirmation for requests, while files still require permission. Apple also warns that ChatGPT uses generative models, outputs may vary, and important information should be checked.

How to start a Copilot voice conversation with Siri
Microsoft documents Siri voice commands as a way to open the Copilot mobile app or start a voice conversation in it. Examples include “Talk to Microsoft Copilot,” “Start a conversation with Microsoft Copilot,” and “Open Microsoft Copilot voice mode.” Microsoft says this mobile voice-command feature is currently available only on iOS. If both Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot are installed, Siri may ask which app to launch. (Microsoft’s instructions for using Siri with Copilot.)
This is voice access to Copilot, not evidence that Copilot replaces Siri as the iPhone’s system assistant. Microsoft’s cited instructions explain the app-launch workflow, not a complete feature comparison or subscription pricing.
How to choose between them
- Choose Siri AI if your priority is an assistant Apple says can use personal or onscreen context and perform supported actions across iPhone apps—and your device, language, and region are eligible.
- Choose ChatGPT directly if you want to use ChatGPT as its own service. Connect it to Apple Intelligence if you also want Siri to route supported requests to it.
- Try Copilot voice mode if you want to start a spoken conversation with Microsoft Copilot from Siri and are comfortable continuing in the Copilot app.
No controlled, current head-to-head performance comparison is established by the cited product documentation. It supports comparing how these services are integrated and invoked, but not declaring one the best-performing assistant for every iPhone user.
