Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Choose by the job you need done: LibreOffice for office documents, Joplin for notes and web clippings, AppFlowy for a pages-and-projects workspace, and Vikunja as a starting point for task management. For broader collaboration, consider Nextcloud. These tools differ in features, licensing, deployment and collaboration, so treat this as a workflow-based shortlist—not a universal ranking.
Quick picks by workflow
| What you need | Starting point | Why it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documents, spreadsheets and presentations | LibreOffice | A no-cost office suite with Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math. | Check compatibility with the file formats and collaborators you rely on; compatibility was not tested for this guide. |
| Notes, reference material and saved web pages | Joplin | Open-source note-taking with multimedia notes, a web clipper, plugins, rich-text or Markdown editors, and sync options. | Review sync-provider options and whether Joplin Cloud’s sharing features suit your collaboration needs. |
| Pages, projects and team knowledge in one workspace | AppFlowy | Its site describes projects, wikis, team collaboration, real-time co-editing and several deployment choices. | AppFlowy describes its model as open core; check current licensing and plan details for the features you need. |
| Task lists and lightweight task management | Vikunja | A curated FOSS directory lists it as a Todoist- or Trello-style task tool. | This guide did not verify its current official feature or license documentation. Confirm both before relying on a particular capability. |
| Broader content collaboration | Nextcloud | Its official site describes an open-source content-collaboration platform. | Available apps, hosting and administration depend on the deployment; the exact setup was not assessed here. |
For browser-based office collaboration, the same curated FOSS directory also lists ONLYOFFICE and Collabora Online. It describes Collabora Online as LibreOffice-based and integrated with Nextcloud, but this is a directory-level lead rather than a current feature or license comparison. Check the products’ own documentation before choosing between them.
How to choose an alternative
Start with the incumbent app and the specific work it handles. A notes app, task manager and office suite are not interchangeable just because they all help with productivity. Then compare the practical differences that affect your workflow:
- Primary job: Decide whether you need an office suite, a note repository, a task list or an all-in-one workspace.
- Solo use or collaboration: Identify whether you need to share documents, co-edit pages or coordinate tasks with others.
- Local use or synchronization: Check whether you need access on one device, sync across devices or shared online access.
- Hosted service or self-hosting: A hosted option avoids running the service yourself; self-hosting gives you a deployment choice but also brings ongoing administration. The amount of effort depends on the setup and is not established here.
- Portability: Look at export options and formats before moving a large library or adopting a tool with a team.
- Setup and maintenance: Consider who will configure accounts, backups and updates if the software is self-hosted.
What each option is best suited to
LibreOffice: office files
LibreOffice is the clearest fit when your main need is creating or editing office documents. Its official page names six tools: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math, and describes the suite as available at no cost. It does not replace a project board or shared team-notes system. If other people need to open your files, check compatibility using the formats and workflows your collaborators actually use.

#1 Best Overall
Joplin: notes and captured web pages
Joplin describes itself as an open-source note-taking app. Its official site lists multimedia notes, a web clipper, plugins, rich-text and Markdown editors, and synchronization through Joplin Cloud, Dropbox and OneDrive. It also says notes use an open format and that synchronization is protected with end-to-end encryption. Collaborative note sharing is described as a Joplin Cloud feature, so verify that the service and sharing workflow fit your needs.
AppFlowy: a workspace for pages and projects
AppFlowy is aimed at people who want projects, wikis and team knowledge together rather than a dedicated notes app alone. Its site describes real-time co-editing and deployment on a user’s infrastructure, in the cloud or in an air-gapped environment. It lists macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and web support. AppFlowy calls its model “open core”; do not assume that every feature, plan or hosted service has identical licensing.
Rank #2
Vikunja: a task-management candidate
A curated FOSS directory presents Vikunja as a Todoist- or Trello-style task tool. That is enough to make it a candidate for lightweight task management, but not to establish its current feature set or licensing. Confirm those details in Vikunja’s current official documentation before choosing it for a particular workflow.
Nextcloud: broader collaboration
Nextcloud’s official site identifies it as an open-source content-collaboration platform. The exact app mix, hosting arrangement and maintenance work depend on how it is deployed, and those specifics are not established here. If you want the platform without managing your own installation, investigate managed hosting and verify a provider’s current service and terms.

Open source does not mean that every product has the same license, that every feature is free, or that a hosted plan has the same terms as a self-managed version. AppFlowy explicitly describes itself as open core, and hosted services can have their own plans and conditions. Check current licensing and product documentation for the exact edition and features you intend to use.
This shortlist is a representative starting point, not a claim that the listed tools reproduce every feature of a commercial productivity suite. Product availability, features, platform support, licensing and hosting options can change. Official product information was reviewed for LibreOffice, Joplin, AppFlowy and Nextcloud; Vikunja and the additional office-suite options are included based on a curated directory, so verify their current details directly before committing.
