Shopify is the best default for most new and growing online stores in 2026. It combines managed hosting, a strong checkout, payments, point-of-sale tools, selling channels, and a large app ecosystem without requiring the merchant to maintain a server. But it is not the best choice for every business: WooCommerce is better for an existing WordPress site or maximum ownership, while BigCommerce is especially compelling for complex catalogs and B2B operations—provided you model its new 2026 payment-provider fees carefully.

The right choice depends on more than the monthly subscription. Payment processing, platform transaction fees, apps, hosting, extensions, fulfillment, POS, maintenance, migration, and technical support can change the economics completely. This comparison separates full ecommerce platforms from embedded carts and add-on tools, then matches each platform to the type of business it serves best.

Pricing and plan information in this guide is U.S.-oriented and reflects public vendor information checked against the August 10, 2026 research snapshot. Annual-billing and monthly-billing prices are shown separately where available. Taxes, payment-processing fees, introductory promotions, app costs, hardware, development, and enterprise implementation are not automatically included in subscription prices.

Quick recommendations

Best for Recommended platform Why it fits Main reservation
Most new and growing stores Shopify Managed infrastructure, dependable checkout, broad app and channel ecosystem, POS, and a clear upgrade path Apps can become expensive, and third-party payment providers may trigger an additional platform fee
WordPress and maximum ownership WooCommerce Free, open-source WordPress commerce with no platform revenue share and extensive customization You own hosting, updates, security, compatibility, performance, and much of the troubleshooting
Complex catalogs, B2B, and multiple storefronts BigCommerce More commerce functionality built in, strong B2B features, multi-storefront support, channels, and headless options Since June 1, 2026, open payment providers can incur additional fees on self-service plans
Design-led small-business website Wix Accessible visual editing, ecommerce, content, multilingual tools, and business features in one system Less suited to highly complex B2B, catalog, or enterprise workflows
Design-first creators and small catalogs Squarespace Excellent presentation, unlimited products, subscriptions, POS, and simple content management Physical and digital-product transaction fees differ by plan, and operational depth is limited compared with dedicated commerce platforms
Adding a store to an existing website Ecwid Embeds into WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, and other sites without rebuilding the website Product limits and advanced features vary by plan
Retailers already using Square Square Online Online ordering, pickup, delivery, inventory, customer accounts, and Square POS integration Advanced storefront customization and commerce logic are more limited
Open source outside WordPress PrestaShop Customizable open-source commerce with strong European and international orientation Hosting, modules, upgrades, caching, and security require technical administration
Enterprise B2B or composable commerce Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce, Shopware, or commercetools Deep B2B, multi-brand, ERP, procurement, API-first, or highly customized capabilities Implementation, integrations, support, and ongoing engineering can cost far more than the license

What shopping cart software includes

Shopping cart software traditionally means the part of a website that stores products selected by a customer, calculates totals, and sends the order to checkout. In modern usage, however, shoppers and business owners usually mean a complete ecommerce platform: the product catalog, storefront, checkout, payment integration, order management, shipping, tax settings, customer accounts, analytics, and sales channels surrounding the cart.

Nulaxy Ergonomic Adjustable Laptop Stand for Desk, Dual Foldable Computer Riser with Advanced Heat-Vent, Heavy-Duty Portable Notebook Holder for Posture Correction, Compatible with Mac 10-16" Laptops
  • Ergonomic Posture Correction: Designed to elevate your laptop to the perfect eye level, this adjustable laptop stand significantly reduces neck, shoulder, and spinal fatigue. Transform your desk into a healthier workstation, ideal for long hours of typing, Zoom meetings, or gaming.
  • Unshakable Dual-Rod Stability: Unlike single-hinge models, our stand features a highly engineered dual-support rod mechanism. It perfectly distributes weight to ensure a 100% wobble-free typing experience, safely supporting heavy-duty devices up to 22 lbs (10kg).
  • Advanced Thermal Cooling Panel: Maximize your device's performance. The unique geometric heat-vent design on the upper panel provides superior airflow compared to standard solid stands. This continuous heat dissipation prevents your laptop from thermal throttling and hardware damage during intensive tasks.
  • Universal 10-16” Compatibility: A versatile computer riser that seamlessly fits all 10 to 16-inch laptops. Broadly compatible with MacBook Pro/Air, Dell XPS, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Chromebook, and large gaming laptops. The anti-slip silicone pads firmly grip your device and protect it from scratches.
  • Foldable, Portable & Ready to Go: Maximize your productivity anywhere. The dual-foldable design allows the stand to collapse completely flat in seconds. Easily slip it into your backpack or briefcase, making it the ultimate portable office accessory for business trips, cafes, or hybrid work setups.

Those categories should not be confused:

  • Hosted ecommerce platforms such as Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Ecwid, and Square Online provide a managed service. The vendor operates the core infrastructure, security updates, and much of the technical stack.
  • Open-source or self-hosted platforms such as WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Shopware Community Edition, and Adobe Commerce Open Source provide more control over code and hosting, but shift maintenance and operational responsibility to the merchant or its agency.
  • Embedded carts and checkout tools add commerce to an existing site. Ecwid is a prominent example; Shopify Buy Button and payment links are other forms of lighter-weight commerce.
  • Enterprise and composable commerce products such as Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce, commercetools, Shopware, and Medusa are intended for organizations that need extensive integrations, multiple storefronts, custom frontends, or complex account and pricing rules.
  • Marketplace software is designed to let multiple independent sellers list products on one marketplace. It is not the same as software for a normal single-merchant online store.

Comparison directories sometimes mix complete platforms with payment processors, shipping applications, abandoned-cart software, and marketplace products. The GetApp shopping-cart category illustrates why checking the product category matters before comparing features or prices.

How to choose: the criteria that actually matter

There is no meaningful universal ranking unless the word best has a defined context. A solo creator, a restaurant, a WordPress publisher, a B2B distributor, and a global consumer brand have different requirements. Evaluate candidates against the following criteria, giving extra weight to the requirements that can disqualify a platform.

Total cost of ownership

Use this model instead of comparing subscription prices alone:

Monthly software cost + apps or extensions + payment percentage × sales + fixed payment fee × order count + platform transaction fees + hosting and maintenance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also account for the domain, premium themes, tax and shipping services, POS hardware, agency work, migration, backups, security, and staff time. A free or inexpensive core can be the most expensive option if it requires constant development. Conversely, a higher subscription can be cheaper if it replaces several paid extensions and reduces operational work.

Payment economics

Confirm all of the following before selecting a platform:

  • Whether your preferred processor is supported in your country and business category
  • Whether the provider is native, embedded, or treated as an external provider
  • Whether the platform adds a fee on top of the processor’s percentage and fixed charge
  • Rates for international cards, currency conversion, cross-border orders, ACH, wallets, BNPL, subscriptions, refunds, and disputes
  • Whether the provider can negotiate rates at your volume
  • Whether marketplace, social, and other channel orders count toward a revenue or GMV threshold

A store with a low average order value feels fixed per-order charges more heavily. A high-volume store may care more about a percentage-based platform fee. Model actual order counts and payment methods rather than relying on a headline rate.

Catalog and operational complexity

Test the actual catalog model—not just the number of products advertised. Check variants, option combinations, bundles, configurable products, subscriptions, preorders, backorders, personalization, digital goods, customer-specific pricing, multiple warehouses, product feeds, and API limits. A platform can advertise unlimited products while imposing separate limits on variants, images, inventory locations, staff, automation, API calls, or search behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checkout and conversion features

Compare guest checkout, express wallets, one-page checkout, PayPal, BNPL, local payment methods, address validation, tax and duty calculation, shipping-rate accuracy, fraud controls, post-purchase account creation, subscription renewals, store credit, exchanges, age verification, accessibility, and mobile usability.

Do not treat vendor conversion claims as independent testing. For example, Shopify displays a claim that its checkout converts 15% better on average than other platforms on its own pricing page. That is a Shopify marketing claim, not a neutral cross-platform benchmark.

Shipping, tax, and fulfillment

Verify support for carrier-calculated rates, label printing, local pickup, local delivery, delivery windows, multi-origin fulfillment, split shipments, returns, exchanges, backorders, 3PL connections, automated sales tax, VAT/GST, duties, and landed-cost calculations. Shipping is a frequent source of unexpected app costs and custom development.

POS and omnichannel selling

If the business sells in person, compare shared inventory, shared customer profiles, online returns in stores, buy online and pick up in store, ship-from-store, multi-location stock, staff permissions, gift cards, loyalty, hardware, offline operation, and cross-channel promotions. A nominal POS integration is not proof that every catalog, discount, tax, return, and customer-account rule behaves consistently across channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

B2B capability

Wholesale pricing alone is not a full B2B system. A serious B2B operation may need company accounts, buyer roles, approval workflows, contract pricing, volume discounts, quotes, purchase orders, credit limits, payment terms, invoice portals, sales-representative access, quick ordering by SKU, EDI, PunchOut, and ERP synchronization.

International selling

Multi-currency is only one piece of international commerce. Check regional catalogs, localized prices, local domains, languages, payment methods, tax registration, duties, currency settlement, cross-border fees, fulfillment, legal notices, and returns in every target market.

Best shopping cart software, reviewed

1. Shopify: best overall for most stores

Choose Shopify if you want a managed launch, a strong checkout, broad integrations, and room to add channels or POS without operating your own commerce server.

Shopify’s third-party transaction fee applies when an order is processed through a third-party provider rather than solely through Shopify Payments. Using Shopify Payments avoids that additional Shopify fee for eligible orders, but it does not eliminate ordinary payment-processing charges. See Shopify’s explanation of Shopify Payments costs before assuming the platform is processor-neutral.

For an illustration, $10,000 in monthly card sales across 100 orders on Basic would produce $290 in percentage fees plus $30 in fixed fees at the displayed rate, before the subscription and any apps. If the same eligible sales used an external provider, the 2% third-party fee could add another $200. This is an example using published starting rates, not a quote or a guarantee of the merchant’s actual rate.

Why Shopify is the default recommendation

  • Hosting, SSL/TLS, bandwidth, and core platform maintenance are managed by Shopify.
  • The checkout, product administration, order management, discounts, analytics, and channel tools are accessible to nontechnical operators.
  • It supports online stores, physical POS, social and marketplace channels, and newer AI-chat selling channels promoted on its pricing page.
  • The app and service-provider ecosystem makes it easier to find integrations for shipping, tax, reviews, subscriptions, fulfillment, email, and marketing.
  • Plans provide a relatively clear path from a small store to larger staff, reporting, inventory-location, international, and B2B requirements.

What to watch

  • Apps can turn a simple monthly subscription into a substantial recurring software bill.
  • Using a non-Shopify payment provider can create a second percentage fee on top of processor charges.
  • Payment availability, local methods, tax tools, international features, and Shopify Payments eligibility vary by country.
  • Unusual checkout logic, deep backend changes, or highly customized data models may run into hosted-platform constraints.
  • Exporting core data is possible, but app-generated data, customer passwords, payment tokens, subscriptions, and some custom workflows may not migrate cleanly.

Best alternative: WooCommerce for WordPress ownership or BigCommerce for a complex catalog with strong built-in B2B needs. Do not choose Shopify solely because a review calls it the easiest or best-converting platform; those conclusions require a disclosed, independent testing method.

2. WooCommerce: best for WordPress and control

Choose WooCommerce if the store belongs inside WordPress, content and commerce are tightly connected, or you need source-code and hosting control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WooCommerce describes its core as a free, open-source WordPress ecommerce platform with no platform revenue share. The real cost comes from the surrounding stack. WooCommerce’s own cost guide estimates hosting at approximately $25–$350 per month for most stores and extensions at approximately $29–$299 per year per extension. Those are WooCommerce estimates, not universal prices.

Possible costs include a domain, WordPress hosting, a theme, payment processing, tax and shipping extensions, security and backup services, performance work, premium plugins, developer maintenance, and emergency troubleshooting. A capable store owner or agency can make WooCommerce economical and extremely flexible; an unmaintained installation can become unreliable and vulnerable.

Technical requirements

The current WooCommerce system-requirements documentation shows PHP 7.4 as a minimum for supported versions, recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, shows MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.1 as minimum database levels, and recommends MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer. Requirements change, and the host must support a compatible WordPress, PHP, database, web server, caching, and backup configuration.

WooCommerce version numbers also move quickly. The release index listed WooCommerce 10.9.4, released July 7, 2026, while a separate developer announcement for 11.0 gave a planned final release date of July 28. Check the live release index and developer changelog before installing or stating a version number in a long-lived guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths

  • No WooCommerce platform subscription or platform revenue share for the core software
  • Full WordPress integration for publishing, SEO, editorial content, memberships, communities, and custom post types
  • Broad extension and theme ecosystem
  • Freedom to select hosting, payment providers, data storage, and custom code
  • Good fit for unusual products, checkout rules, memberships, subscriptions, and integrations when development resources are available

Reservations

  • Plugin conflicts, outdated PHP, weak hosting, database growth, and poor caching can cause slow or broken stores.
  • Updates need staging, backups, compatibility checks, and a rollback plan.
  • Security is a continuing operating responsibility rather than something solved by installing the core plugin.
  • Extensions can create recurring costs and make future migration difficult.

Best alternative: Ecwid if you want to add a modest catalog to an existing WordPress site without building a full WooCommerce stack. Choose Shopify instead if reducing maintenance matters more than source-code control.

3. BigCommerce: best for complex catalogs and B2B

Choose BigCommerce when the catalog, sales organization, wholesale model, or multi-storefront structure is more complicated than a typical DTC store. It often reduces app dependence by putting more commerce functionality in the platform and supports headless implementations while retaining a managed backend.

Current U.S. pricing structure

Plan Annual billing Monthly billing Published threshold or condition
Core $29/month $39/month Up to $30,000 trailing-12-month GMV
Growth $79/month $105/month Up to $100,000 trailing-12-month GMV
Scale $299/month $399/month $33,333 per month GMV cap before overage under the displayed model
Performance Custom, starting at $1,499/month billed annually Custom High-volume and enterprise-oriented terms

BigCommerce defines the plan calculation using GMV after a 10% reduction from gross order value. Refer to the live BigCommerce pricing page for the current definitions and exceptions.

The 2026 payment-provider change

Older reviews frequently say BigCommerce has no transaction fees. That statement is no longer complete. For self-service plans introduced on June 1, 2026, BigCommerce lists an additional fee on eligible orders processed through Open Payment Providers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Core: 2% of eligible order GMV
  • Growth: 1%
  • Scale: 0.6%
  • Performance: contracted terms with no listed open-provider fee

Orders processed through BigCommerce’s listed Embedded Payment Providers are not subject to that additional fee. The provider list can change, so check the current rules and classification on the 2026 BigCommerce pricing update and the main pricing page.

For example, $10,000 of eligible monthly sales on Core could create a $200 open-provider fee before the payment processor’s own charges. That can materially alter the comparison with WooCommerce or with a platform where the merchant’s preferred processor does not trigger a second platform fee.

Other strengths

  • Strong catalog and product-management capabilities for more complex assortments
  • Multi-Storefront support for brands, regions, or separate customer experiences
  • Broad integrations and channels including Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Google, Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, and Pinterest
  • Headless support for custom frontends
  • B2B Edition features including company accounts, sales-representative masquerade, quoting, shared shopping lists, invoice portals, quick-order workflows, buyer portals, and multi-storefront support

BigCommerce lists additional Multi-Storefront charges of $30 per month per additional storefront on Core, $50 on Growth, and $100 on Scale, with plan-specific maximums. Its B2B Edition documentation explains the capabilities more precisely than a generic B2B badge.

Reservations

  • Confirm whether the preferred processor is embedded or open before signing.
  • Model GMV thresholds, overages, additional storefronts, marketplace orders, and social orders.
  • B2B Edition and enterprise capabilities may require a higher plan, implementation work, or a commercial discussion.

Best alternative: Shopify for a simpler DTC operation and larger app ecosystem; Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce, or commercetools when B2B, ERP, procurement, or multi-brand requirements are enterprise-scale.

4. Wix: best for a design-led small business site

Choose Wix when the website’s visual editor, content, bookings, services, multilingual pages, or local-business features matter as much as the product catalog.

Wix’s U.S. ecommerce materials currently identify Core at $29 per month billed annually, Business at approximately $39 per month billed annually, and Business Elite at approximately $159 per month billed annually, with enterprise pricing by quotation. Prices vary by country, billing term, account, promotion, and rollout, so confirm the exact amount on the Wix plans page.

For U.S. Wix Payments transactions, Wix currently lists 2.9% + $0.30 for most credit and debit cards other than American Express, 3.7% + $0.30 for American Express, 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal through Wix Payments, a 1.5% cross-border fee where applicable, and a 1% currency-conversion fee where applicable. See the Wix Payments service-fee table rather than assuming every payment method has the same rate.

Strengths

  • Visual site editing that is approachable for small-business owners
  • Custom cart and express-checkout options
  • Online and in-person selling with online/offline inventory tools
  • Subscriptions, abandoned-cart recovery, product import/export, and social and marketplace selling
  • Multilingual stores and local subdomains
  • Useful combination of products, services, bookings, memberships, and content

Reservations

Verify plan-specific product, variant, inventory-location, staff, reporting, and automation limits. Wix is not usually the first choice for deeply customized B2B pricing, very large catalogs, or complex enterprise integrations. Its payment availability is also country-specific.

Best alternative: Squarespace for a smaller design-first catalog, or Shopify when commerce operations and future channel expansion outweigh visual editing flexibility.

5. Squarespace: best for creators and small catalogs

Choose Squarespace when brand presentation, editorial content, and a small-to-medium catalog are central—and when the business can work within its commerce and digital-product fee structure.

Squarespace currently uses Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced website plans. Its public FAQ states that plans start at $19 per month when paid annually, and its ecommerce page displays approximate U.S. annual-billing equivalents of $19 for Basic, $29 for Core, $49 for Plus, and $99 for Advanced. Verify the live Squarespace ecommerce pricing page; prices can vary by country and rollout status.

Fees that change the calculation

Under the newer plan structure, Squarespace lists a 2% transaction fee for physical products on Basic and 0% on Core, Plus, and Advanced. For digital products such as courses, memberships, video, and downloads, it lists 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, and 0% on Advanced under the current rollout. Legacy Commerce plans have different rules and should not be combined with the newer plans in one comparison. The current Squarespace transaction-fee documentation is the source of truth.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means a creator selling digital products must compare the fee percentage against the higher plan price. A $19 plan can be more expensive than a $29 or $49 plan once transaction volume is meaningful.

Strengths

  • High-quality templates and strong product storytelling
  • Unlimited products and services on the listed commerce plans
  • Gift cards, subscriptions, courses, memberships, and digital products
  • Checkout on the merchant’s domain
  • POS, shipping labels, carrier-calculated shipping, Google Shopping, and social promotion tools

Reservations

Squarespace is less suitable for advanced B2B account structures, ERP-heavy operations, large multi-warehouse catalogs, or complex marketplace workflows. It can be an excellent content-and-commerce system, but it is not automatically a replacement for a dedicated operational platform.

Best alternative: Wix when the business needs more visual site flexibility and local-business tools, or Shopify when checkout, integrations, and commerce depth are the priority.

6. Ecwid: best for embedding a store into an existing site

Choose Ecwid when a business already has a WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or other marketing website and wants to add a store without rebuilding it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ecwid supports a standalone store as well as embedded commerce. Its pricing structure includes Starter for up to 10 products, Venture for up to 100 products plus digital goods, Business for up to 2,500 products, and Unlimited for unlimited products. The exact subscription prices and plan entitlements should be checked on the Ecwid pricing page.

Ecwid states that it charges no Ecwid transaction fee. Payment processors still charge their ordinary processing fees, and advanced features remain plan-dependent.

Strengths

  • Embeds into an existing WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or other website
  • Facebook, Instagram, and marketplace selling on applicable plans
  • Subscriptions, abandoned-cart recovery, wholesale pricing groups, and multilingual stores on applicable plans
  • POS integrations, mobile store management, unlimited bandwidth, and storage claims on the pricing page
  • Lower migration effort when the existing website is valuable and the catalog is modest

Reservations

Product caps and advanced features vary by plan. Ecwid is less suitable than Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce for unusually complex catalogs, advanced B2B pricing, or enterprise workflows. It is best understood as an embedded store platform, not necessarily as the deepest back office for a complex operation.

7. Square Online: best for retailers already using Square POS

Square’s current online-store plans include website creation, SEO basics, pickup, local delivery, shipping, search and social selling, customer accounts, abandoned-cart emails, subscriptions, bundles, real-time shipping rates, inventory and order management, and integration with Square POS. It also lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Pay, Cash App Pay, and Afterpay support. Details are on the Square Online plans page.

Processing fees vary by plan. Square says businesses processing more than $250,000 per year can ask about custom pricing and processing fees. That threshold is important for established retailers: compare the actual plan and negotiated processing offer rather than assuming a free or low-cost plan remains the cheapest at scale.

Strengths

  • Unified online and in-person catalog and inventory for Square users
  • Pickup, local delivery, shipping, subscriptions, and customer accounts
  • Good fit for restaurants, cafes, salons, market vendors, and local retailers
  • Familiar payment hardware and operational workflow for existing Square merchants

Reservations

Square Online is less flexible than Shopify or WooCommerce for advanced storefront design, custom checkout logic, complex product models, and sophisticated B2B workflows. Check whether a needed feature is included in Square Free, Plus, or Premium and whether it is available in the merchant’s geography.

8. PrestaShop: best open-source alternative outside WordPress

Choose PrestaShop when you want open-source control, have development capability, and need localization or catalog flexibility that simpler hosted builders do not provide.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PrestaShop’s open-source project is freely downloadable and customizable. PrestaShop 9 uses Symfony 6.4 and PHP 8.1 or newer and introduces a new Admin API, according to the PrestaShop open-source information.

The free download is not the same as a free production store. Hosting, modules, theme work, upgrades, caching, security, backups, monitoring, and compatibility testing all remain part of the operating budget. PrestaShop’s managed-hosting page lists plans beginning at approximately €200 per month, with higher tiers beginning at €275, €495, €715, and €1,105 per month. Those are managed-hosting prices, not a required cost for self-hosting. See PrestaShop hosting for the current terms.

PrestaShop is particularly relevant to European and international merchants, developers, and businesses already familiar with PHP ecommerce administration. It is usually a poor first choice for a nontechnical owner seeking minimal maintenance.

9. Enterprise and composable alternatives

Enterprise platforms belong in a separate shortlist rather than a small-business popularity ranking. They become relevant when the business has multiple brands, countries, ERPs, procurement systems, customer-specific catalogs, complex organizations, or a dedicated technical team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Best fit Commercial and technical note
Adobe Commerce Complex B2B, large catalogs, multiple websites, and ERP, PIM, CRM, or OMS integrations Licensing is generally quote-based; implementation, hosting, patches, testing, and integration often dominate cost. Adobe’s release documentation lists Commerce 2.4.9 as released May 12, 2026, with regular support through May 2029. See Adobe release versions.
Salesforce Commerce Enterprise B2C, B2B, and D2C connected to the Salesforce ecosystem Commercial terms are quote-based or tied to usage and business structure. See Salesforce Commerce pricing.
commercetools API-first, composable commerce with custom frontends and multiple channels Uses an order-based commercial model on the described plans and offers optional B2B APIs. See commercetools pricing.
Shopware Open-source or managed commerce, especially for European and multi-brand operations Community Edition is free and open source; paid plans shown by Shopware include Rise from €600 per month and Evolve from €2,400 per month, excluding VAT. See Shopware pricing.
Medusa Technical teams building custom storefronts and workflows on an open-source commerce framework Open-source software with a hosted cloud option. It is a development platform, not a no-code store builder. See Medusa pricing.

Do not select an enterprise platform because it has the longest feature list. Select one only when the organization can fund discovery, implementation, data integration, testing, training, support, and ongoing engineering.

True-cost comparison

Platform Subscription model Payment and platform-fee risk Other likely costs Primary cost trade-off
Shopify Hosted monthly or annual plans; Plus is contract-based Processor fees plus up to 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic when not using Shopify Payments Apps, themes, POS, shipping, tax, development Predictable operations, but recurring ecosystem and payment costs
WooCommerce Free open-source core No WooCommerce platform revenue share; processor charges still apply Hosting, extensions, premium themes, security, backups, developers Low license cost in exchange for merchant responsibility
BigCommerce Hosted plans based partly on trailing-12-month GMV Up to 2% open-provider fee on Core, in addition to processor charges Apps, additional storefronts, B2B, integrations, implementation More built-in commerce, but payment classification and GMV can materially affect cost
Wix Hosted website and business plans Payment-processing rates vary by method; cross-border and conversion fees may apply Apps, premium features, design, POS, marketing Strong site value for small businesses, less operational depth at the high end
Squarespace Hosted website plans Current Basic lists 2% physical-product fee and 7% digital-product fee; higher plans reduce or remove them Payment processing, extensions, POS, shipping, marketing Simple presentation, but the fee structure matters for digital products
Ecwid Plan tiers based partly on product count No Ecwid transaction fee; payment processor charges remain Higher plan, integrations, POS, marketing Efficient for an embedded modest catalog, less deep for complex operations
Square Online Free and paid online-store plans Processing depends on plan and volume; custom pricing may be available above $250,000 annual processing POS hardware, premium plan, shipping, delivery, integrations Excellent ecosystem fit for Square retailers, less flexible for custom commerce
PrestaShop Free open-source software or paid managed hosting Processor and module costs; no conventional core license for open source Hosting, modules, developers, maintenance, security Control and localization at the cost of technical administration

A practical cost model

Build a spreadsheet with at least three scenarios: a low-volume launch, the expected 12-month store, and a high-growth case. For each, enter:

  1. Monthly and annual platform charges
  2. Expected monthly sales and number of orders
  3. Average order value
  4. Payment-method mix and processor rates
  5. Any platform percentage charged on eligible orders
  6. App or extension subscriptions
  7. Hosting and developer hours
  8. Shipping, tax, POS, and fulfillment software
  9. Plan upgrades, GMV thresholds, storefront charges, or overages

Do not include a temporary introductory promotion in the long-term case. Do not compare a monthly price for one platform with an annual-billing equivalent for another. Label taxes, currency, and renewal pricing.

Feature-specific decisions

Best for subscriptions and digital products

Subscriptions can involve recurring payment tokens, failed-payment recovery, customer self-service, proration, cancellations, fulfillment intervals, and tax treatment. Confirm whether the feature is native or depends on an app.

WooCommerce can support many subscription and membership models through extensions, while Shopify commonly uses apps for specialized subscription workflows. Squarespace supports subscriptions, courses, memberships, and digital products, but its current digital-product fees range from 7% on Basic to 0% on Advanced under the listed rollout. That fee difference can matter more than the plan price. A dedicated membership or subscription service may be preferable when recurring billing is the core business rather than an add-on.

Best for B2B and wholesale

BigCommerce is one of the clearest self-service candidates because its B2B Edition explicitly lists company-account management, quoting, invoice portals, quick orders, shared lists, sales-representative access, and buyer-portal features. Shopify lists B2B catalog capabilities on its pricing page, with plan-specific limits and expanded features on Plus. Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce, and commercetools become more appropriate when the business needs complex account hierarchies, procurement, credit, ERP, or multi-brand logic.

Do not accept a platform’s claim that it supports B2B until you test customer-specific pricing, multiple buyers, approval rules, purchase orders, invoices, payment terms, tax exemptions, and ERP synchronization.

Best for physical retail

Square Online is the natural first comparison for a business already using Square POS. Shopify is the stronger alternative when the online store, apps, international selling, and broader commerce ecosystem are more important. Wix, Squarespace, and Ecwid can support in-person or connected selling, but confirm the exact geography, hardware, inventory, returns, and customer-account behavior.

Best for international selling

Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Shopware, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce, and commercetools can all be considered for international operations, but the appropriate choice depends on how much localization is needed. A store selling in several currencies is simpler than one requiring country-specific catalogs, regional prices, local payment methods, separate domains, tax registrations, warehouses, duties, and cross-border returns.

Best for headless commerce

BigCommerce, Shopify at appropriate plans, Adobe Commerce, commercetools, Shopware, Medusa, and WooCommerce can participate in headless architectures, but API availability is not the same as a successful headless project. Budget for frontend development, preview environments, search, caching, checkout integration, analytics, content management, monitoring, and maintenance. Headless is justified by a real frontend or integration requirement, not simply because it sounds more scalable.

Decision tree

  1. Do you already have a website?
    • If it is WordPress and commerce will be central, start with WooCommerce.
    • If it is WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or another site and the store is modest, evaluate Ecwid.
    • If the existing site is heavily customized but operations matter more than keeping the same CMS, compare a separate Shopify or BigCommerce storefront.
  2. Do you want the least technical maintenance? Start with Shopify. Wix or Squarespace may be better if content and design dominate and the catalog is simple.
  3. Do you need B2B accounts, quotes, buyer roles, invoices, or customer-specific catalogs? Compare BigCommerce B2B Edition, Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce, and commercetools based on implementation resources.
  4. Do you sell mainly in a physical store, restaurant, salon, or market? Start with Square Online if you already use Square; compare Shopify if online commerce is becoming a major channel.
  5. Do you require source-code and hosting control? Consider WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Shopware Community Edition, Adobe Commerce Open Source, or Medusa. Plan for engineering and security before choosing.
  6. Do you use a non-native payment processor? Calculate the processor’s fee plus any Shopify third-party fee or BigCommerce open-provider fee. This step can change the winner.
  7. Do you expect multiple brands, regions, or storefronts? Compare BigCommerce Multi-Storefront, Shopify’s relevant plans, Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce, and commercetools. Include each storefront’s recurring charge and operational workflow.

Edge cases that change the recommendation

Existing WordPress site

WooCommerce is usually the deeper integration choice, but only if hosting, plugins, updates, and performance are managed properly. Ecwid is a lower-maintenance option for a modest catalog. Shopify can work as a separate commerce property when the publisher values operational simplicity more than a single WordPress backend.

High sales volume with an external payment processor

Compare WooCommerce, Shopify, and BigCommerce using the exact processor and monthly sales. Shopify may add a third-party percentage unless Shopify Payments is used. BigCommerce may add an open-provider percentage under its 2026 structure. A platform with a larger subscription can still be cheaper when its payment economics fit the business.

Large number of variants

Ask vendors for the exact limits on variants, options, images, bulk editing, inventory combinations, API calls, search indexing, and marketplace feeds. Test a representative product rather than assuming that unlimited product count means unlimited configuration complexity.

Low average order value

Calculate the fixed payment charge against the average order. A $0.30 or $0.49 fixed fee has a much larger percentage impact on a $15 order than on a $200 order. Include refunds and failed payment attempts in the model.

Seasonal business

Check annual commitments, minimums, off-season app billing, automatic plan changes, trailing-12-month GMV thresholds, overage rules, and whether the store can be paused. BigCommerce’s current model specifically uses trailing-12-month GMV for plan thresholds, so a seasonal business should model its peak and trailing periods.

Regulated or restricted products

Obtain payment approval before committing to a platform. Also verify age verification, shipping restrictions, marketplace policies, chargeback exposure, licensing, labeling, product claims, and acceptable-use rules. A platform may technically display the catalog while its payment provider refuses the business category.

Migration, ownership, and lock-in

The easiest platform to launch is not necessarily the easiest platform to leave. Before creating thousands of products or accumulating years of orders, confirm what can be exported and how it will be used elsewhere.

Data to verify before signing

  • Products, variants, options, images, categories, attributes, and SEO metadata
  • Customers, addresses, tax exemptions, company accounts, and customer groups
  • Orders, refunds, returns, discounts, taxes, and historical reporting
  • Reviews, blog content, landing pages, navigation, and URL redirects
  • Subscriptions, memberships, recurring payment records, and customer entitlements
  • Inventory locations, bundles, fulfillment records, and warehouse mappings
  • App-generated fields and custom objects

Migration risks people discover late

  • Customer passwords: password hashes may not be portable, requiring account resets.
  • Payment tokens: stored card tokens generally cannot simply be copied to another platform or processor.
  • Subscriptions: recurring contracts may require customer reauthorization or a specialized migration.
  • SEO: changed URL structures, missing redirects, lost metadata, and altered canonical tags can reduce organic traffic.
  • App data: reviews, bundles, loyalty points, custom fields, and workflows may belong to an app rather than the platform export.
  • Order history: a replacement platform may import historical orders only as limited records, which can affect customer service and reporting.
  • Inventory: product IDs, SKUs, variants, locations, and bundles must be mapped before the new store accepts orders.

Run a small test export and import before signing a long contract. Preserve the old site, DNS records, URL map, product images, analytics configuration, and order data until the new store has been reconciled.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Calling every tool a shopping cart: payment processors, shipping services, abandoned-cart tools, marketplaces, and complete ecommerce platforms solve different problems.
  • Comparing headline subscriptions: platform, payment, app, hosting, fulfillment, and maintenance costs belong in the same model.
  • Repeating old BigCommerce tables: the June 1, 2026 plan and open-provider fee change makes older Standard, Plus, and Pro comparisons unreliable.
  • Calling WooCommerce free without qualification: the core software is free; the production store is not necessarily free.
  • Confusing unlimited products with unlimited complexity: variants, locations, API calls, images, and options can remain constrained.
  • Treating digital and physical commerce as identical: Squarespace’s current digital-product fees demonstrate why product type matters.
  • Assuming B2B means wholesale discounts: accounts, approvals, quotes, invoicing, payment terms, and ERP integration are separate requirements.
  • Assuming international means multi-currency: localization also includes domains, language, taxes, duties, payment methods, fulfillment, and returns.
  • Using vendor marketing as independent testing: attribute performance claims and avoid presenting them as neutral benchmarks.
  • Ignoring the exit plan: exportability, passwords, payment tokens, subscriptions, redirects, and app data should be checked before launch.

Final recommendations by business profile

Business profile Start with Why
Solo founder launching a conventional product store Shopify Fast managed setup and a broad path to apps, channels, POS, and international selling
Content publisher already invested in WordPress WooCommerce Commerce remains part of the existing publishing system and can be customized deeply
Small design, art, photography, or creator business Squarespace or Wix Strong presentation and simple business-site management; compare digital-product fees if applicable
Existing website needing a modest embedded catalog Ecwid Adds commerce without replacing the existing site
Restaurant or retailer already on Square Square Online Connects online ordering and inventory to the existing POS ecosystem
Wholesale distributor with complex account pricing BigCommerce B2B Edition or an enterprise platform More appropriate account, quote, invoice, catalog, and operational features
Developer-led business requiring hosting and source control WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Shopware, or Medusa More control, provided the team accepts maintenance and engineering responsibility
Global, multi-brand, ERP-connected enterprise Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce, commercetools, Shopware, or BigCommerce Shortlist based on integrations, account structures, implementation support, and total cost—not feature count alone

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BigCommerce still a no-transaction-fee ecommerce platform in 2026?

Not universally. Since June 1, 2026, BigCommerce lists fees on eligible orders processed through Open Payment Providers on its Core, Growth, and Scale self-service plans: 2%, 1%, and 0.6%, respectively. Orders processed through listed Embedded Payment Providers are not subject to that additional fee. Check the current provider classification and model it alongside payment-processing charges.

Is WooCommerce actually free?

The WooCommerce core is free and has no platform revenue share, but a production store still needs hosting, a domain, payment processing, and often paid themes, extensions, security, backups, maintenance, or development. WooCommerce estimates hosting for most stores at roughly $25–$350 per month and extensions at roughly $29–$299 per year each, but actual costs vary.

Should a nontechnical business choose Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify is generally the safer default when minimizing server maintenance, security work, updates, and compatibility problems matters most. WooCommerce is better when the business already depends on WordPress or needs more control and has a capable developer, agency, or managed host.

Can I switch ecommerce platforms later?

Usually, but the migration is not automatic. Products, customers, orders, URLs, reviews, subscriptions, payment tokens, passwords, app data, and inventory may have different portability limitations. Test exports early, preserve URL redirects, and plan for account resets or payment reauthorization where necessary.

What is the best cart for a B2B business?

BigCommerce B2B Edition is a strong starting point for many mid-market businesses because it lists company management, quotes, invoice portals, quick orders, buyer portals, and sales-representative workflows. Larger or more integrated operations should also evaluate Shopify Plus, Adobe Commerce, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce, and commercetools against their ERP, procurement, pricing, and account requirements.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Shopify for the safest general-purpose launch, WooCommerce for WordPress and ownership, BigCommerce for complex catalogs and B2B after modeling its 2026 payment-provider fees, Wix or Squarespace for design-led small businesses, Ecwid for an embedded store, and Square Online for a Square-centered physical retailer. The best platform is the one whose payment model, catalog structure, fulfillment workflow, technical burden, and migration path fit the business—not the one with the lowest advertised monthly price.
