For the best battery and data balance, start with the game’s Balanced or Low preset, cap gameplay at 30 FPS, reduce shadows and special effects, dim the display, and use Wi-Fi for play and downloads. Turn on Android Battery Saver/Data Saver or iOS Low Power Mode when you need longer sessions, and lower settings or pause if the phone becomes hot.
These changes reduce the work done by the GPU, display, processor and cellular radio. The exact battery and data savings depend on the phone, game engine, brightness, signal strength, temperature and ambient conditions, so measure results on your own device rather than relying on a universal percentage.
Why gacha games drain battery and data
Gacha games combine several demanding activities: continuous 3D rendering, animation, touch input, audio, network communication and frequent asset checks. Graphics-heavy games are among the activities Android identifies as using more battery. A bright, high-refresh-rate display can consume substantial power even when the game itself is unchanged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Battery use rises when the game renders more pixels, calculates complex shadows or effects, and produces more frames per second. Cellular play can also use more power than Wi-Fi because the phone’s radio must maintain a mobile connection, especially when signal quality is poor. Large patches, optional voice packs, high-resolution assets and event downloads can consume far more data than ordinary combat or menu use.

Heat makes the problem worse. Android Developers explains that a hot device can reduce power efficiency and downclock its CPU and GPU. That means a phone may become slower while still consuming significant energy. Lowering the workload before the device overheats is more effective than waiting for thermal throttling to begin.
Choose a starting profile
Use one of these profiles as a starting point, then adjust one setting at a time. The profiles describe priorities, not guaranteed battery percentages.
| Profile | Frame rate | Graphics | Display refresh rate | Brightness | Network | Expected heat | Visual result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-first | 30 FPS | Low preset; shadows and special effects Low or Off; reduced resolution | 60 Hz or the lowest practical setting that avoids a high-refresh mode | Dimmed or Auto-Brightness | Wi-Fi; cellular data disabled for the game when possible | Lowest of the three | Less detail and motion smoothness, but longer sessions |
| Balanced | 30 FPS, or 45 FPS if the phone stays cool | Balanced or Medium; reduce shadows and effects first | 60 Hz matched to the selected target | Comfortably dim | Wi-Fi for downloads and normal play | Moderate | Good readability and stable performance |
| Quality-first | 60 FPS when the device remains cool | High settings, with effects retained | 60 Hz matched to a 60 FPS target | As bright as needed | Wi-Fi preferred; cellular available when necessary | Highest of the three | Smoother motion and richer effects, with shorter sessions |
If you are unsure, choose Balanced, play for 10 to 15 minutes, and check temperature, battery percentage and data counters. Step down to Battery-first if the phone gets uncomfortable, loses charge rapidly or begins reducing performance.
In-game settings that make the largest difference
1. Select Balanced, Medium or Low
Open the game’s graphics or image-quality menu and select Balanced, Medium or Low. Balanced is a sensible first choice because it reduces workload without making text and characters difficult to read. If the phone heats up, move to Low.
For Genshin Impact and other titles from the same publisher, the support guidance specifically calls out lowering Graphics Quality, Shadow Quality and Special Effects, and closing unnecessary background applications. Those controls should be your first changes when performance or battery life is poor.

2. Cap the frame rate
Set the frame-rate option to 30 FPS for battery-first play. A stable 30 FPS generally uses less power than an unstable 60 FPS that repeatedly pushes the phone to its limit. Choose 45 or 60 FPS only when smoother motion is important and the device remains cool.
Higher display refresh rates also consume more power. Set the phone’s display to a refresh rate that matches the game’s target as closely as the device allows. Avoid running a 30-FPS game in a high-refresh mode if the phone offers a lower setting. Android’s FPS-throttling documentation reports an upper-bound example of up to 50% lower GPU power and 20% lower system power; those are documented maximum examples, not a promise for a particular game or phone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Lower shadows and special effects
Set Shadow Quality, Special Effects, reflections and volumetric effects to Low or Off when the game provides separate controls. These options can make the GPU calculate additional lighting, particles and scene detail every frame. Lowering them usually preserves interface readability better than reducing every texture to its minimum.
4. Reduce render resolution and anti-aliasing
Lower the render-resolution or resolution-scale option one step at a time. Reducing the number of pixels the GPU draws can have a large effect on workload. If the game offers anti-aliasing levels, select a lower level after testing resolution. Stop when character outlines or small text become difficult to read.
5. Disable optional visual processing
Turn off motion blur and depth of field if available. They are additional visual effects that can add GPU work, although no universal saving is established for either effect. Disable them when you prefer a clearer, less processed image or when the phone is close to its thermal limit.

6. Keep textures high enough to read
Texture quality can often remain at Medium even when other settings are Low. Texture changes affect memory use and storage more than continuous network data, and very low textures can make signs, menus and character details harder to distinguish. Lower textures only if memory pressure or loading problems are also present.

7. Close unnecessary background apps
Before launching a long session, close apps that are actively using the processor, camera, location services or network. HoYoverse’s support guidance includes closing unnecessary background applications when troubleshooting performance. Do not force-stop essential system services or notification tools that you need; the goal is to remove avoidable workload, not to disable normal phone functions.
Android settings for battery and data
Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Turn on Battery Saver when extending a session matters more than peak performance. If your phone offers Adaptive Battery, enable it for longer-term background-use management.
- Launch the game and check whether the mode imposes a frame-rate or performance limit. Some manufacturers expose a separate gaming panel where you can choose a battery-saving preference.
Battery Saver can limit background activity and performance. That trade-off is useful for menuing, story scenes and turn-based play, but a demanding real-time battle may feel less responsive. If input becomes unreliable, keep the in-game 30-FPS cap and use normal phone mode instead.
Data Saver and per-app data controls
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver. Menu names can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Turn on Data Saver to restrict background mobile-data use.
- Use the system’s app-data screen to check whether the game has unrestricted data access. Allow unrestricted data only when a service must function while Data Saver is enabled.
Data Saver primarily limits background traffic; it does not guarantee that an actively played game will use no cellular data. For a strict data cap, turn off mobile data for the game in the phone’s app or SIM settings, then use Wi-Fi.
Refresh rate, brightness and Game Mode
- Open Display settings and select 60 Hz, or the setting that best matches the game’s target frame rate. High-refresh modes increase power consumption.
- Reduce brightness or enable Auto-Brightness. The display is a major system-level battery consumer during a long gaming session.
- If the phone provides a Game Mode or gaming dashboard, choose its battery-saving preference rather than a performance or boost mode when endurance is the priority. Android documents Game Mode as a performance-versus-battery trade-off.
Inspect usage after a session
After playing, open the per-app battery and mobile-data panels. Check whether the game, the display, a launcher, cloud synchronization or another app was the largest consumer. This prevents you from lowering graphics when the real problem is a background download or weak cellular signal.

iPhone and iPad settings
Low Power Mode
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Turn on Low Power Mode before playing when battery life is the priority.
Apple documents that Low Power Mode reduces brightness, limits ProMotion displays to up to 60 Hz, disables Background App Refresh and automatic downloads, and reduces some visual effects. Those changes can extend a session, but they may delay background updates or notifications. The game can still use network data while you actively play.
Block cellular data for a specific game
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service, depending on region and iOS wording).
- Scroll to the game and switch its cellular-data permission off.
- Leave Wi-Fi enabled and test the game before traveling. Re-enable the permission when you intentionally need mobile play.
The same screen shows each app’s cellular usage. Reset statistics at the start of a defined measurement period if you want a clean comparison between settings.
Brightness, refresh rate and Wi-Fi
- Use Auto-Brightness or lower brightness manually from Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Use Wi-Fi for play and downloads whenever possible. Apple states that a Wi-Fi connection uses less power than a cellular network.
- On an iPhone with ProMotion, Low Power Mode limits refresh to up to 60 Hz. If you need a fixed lower refresh option, use the display controls provided by that model and iOS version.
Prevent Wi-Fi Assist from consuming cellular data
Wi-Fi Assist can switch to cellular data when a Wi-Fi connection is poor. If a data overage is more serious than a momentary slowdown, open Settings > Cellular, scroll to Wi-Fi Assist, and turn it off. This is separate from the game’s cellular-data permission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rules for controlling downloads and mobile data
Download initial files and patches on Wi-Fi
Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network before installing a game, launching it for the first time or applying a major patch. Square Enix states that an internet connection is required on Android to launch and download initial data for its games. Large first-run packages can be many times larger than a normal play session, so do not begin them over a metered connection unless you have checked the size and your allowance.
Use the official update path
Use the official app store, game launcher or platform update tool. HoYoverse recommends the official launcher or platform update tool for updates to Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero. This reduces the risk of repeated downloads from an unofficial or interrupted installation path.

Watch optional assets
Voice packs, high-resolution texture packs, cinematics and event-specific downloads may be optional, but they can consume substantial storage and mobile data. Review the game’s download manager before accepting them. If a game offers a “download all” setting, leave it disabled until you are on Wi-Fi.
Do not rely on a universal megabytes-per-hour estimate
There is no authoritative single MB-per-hour figure that applies to all gacha games. Data use changes with game engine, server traffic, voice chat, asset streaming, patches and event content. Use the phone’s per-app counters instead:
- Reset the relevant mobile-data statistics at the beginning of a test period.
- Play the same mode for a measured length of time, such as 30 minutes, under similar signal conditions.
- Record data with Wi-Fi disabled only if you are intentionally measuring cellular use.
- Repeat after changing one setting, such as disabling high-resolution assets, so the result is interpretable.
How to prevent overheating while playing
Heat is both a comfort problem and a performance problem. Android Developers notes that a hot phone can downclock its CPU and GPU, while Android Help lists graphics-heavy games among high-battery-use activities.
- Drop from 60 to 30 FPS when the back of the phone becomes hot.
- Lower shadows, special effects, reflections and render resolution before reducing every texture.
- Move out of direct sunlight and remove thick cases temporarily if they trap heat.
- Avoid charging under bedding, clothing or another insulating surface. Charging and gaming together add heat.
- Pause when the phone remains uncomfortably hot, shows a temperature warning or becomes difficult to hold.
Do not promise a fixed battery-life gain from any cooling step. Ambient temperature, network signal, brightness, battery age and the game engine all change the result. If heat returns quickly even at Low settings and 30 FPS, inspect the battery and app-usage panels and consider whether the device itself needs service.
A practical tuning and measurement routine
- Start from Balanced. Set 30 FPS, reduce shadows and special effects, set the display to 60 Hz or the nearest matching option, and use Wi-Fi.
- Set a comfortable brightness. Lower it until the interface is still readable in your surroundings.
- Play a repeatable section. Use the same map, battle type or menu route for a fixed period so comparisons are meaningful.
- Record four observations. Note starting and ending battery percentage, phone temperature by touch or the device’s temperature panel, frame-rate stability and per-app data use.
- Change one variable. Try 45 or 60 FPS, then compare; afterward test resolution or effects. Changing everything simultaneously hides which setting helped.
- Stop when comfort falls. A setting that looks good for five minutes but causes heat, throttling or rapid drain is not a practical daily setting.
Android’s published figures for FPS throttling and backbuffer resizing illustrate the potential of workload reductions: FPS throttling is reported at up to 50% GPU and 20% system power reduction, while backbuffer resizing is reported at up to 30% GPU and 10% overall system power reduction. These are upper-bound examples from Android documentation, not measurements of your game, phone or session.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game still drains quickly at 30 FPS
- Lower brightness and confirm the display is not locked to a high-refresh mode.
- Check whether the cellular signal is weak; use Wi-Fi and compare again.
- Inspect per-app battery usage for background activity or another app consuming power.
- Look for heat. If the phone is hot, lower effects and resolution further and pause to cool it.
Mobile data rises even when you barely play
- Check for automatic patches, voice packs or event assets.
- Enable Android Data Saver or disable the game’s cellular permission on iOS.
- Disable iPhone Wi-Fi Assist if poor Wi-Fi is causing cellular fallback.
- Review the per-app counter after resetting it for a clean measurement period.
The image is too blurry or text is hard to read
Raise texture quality to Medium first, then raise render resolution one step. Keep shadows, reflections and special effects low; they often add more continuous GPU work than a modest texture increase. If readability is still poor, use the Balanced profile rather than forcing the lowest preset.
Notifications or background updates are delayed
Battery Saver, Low Power Mode and Data Saver can restrict background activity. Allow the specific service unrestricted data where Android provides that option, or turn the power-saving mode off when you need timely background work. Keep the in-game 30-FPS cap and reduced effects if you still want the graphics-related savings.
Quick Recap
The settings worth remembering
- Lower graphics quality, shadows and special effects first; these are the controls specifically identified by HoYoverse for reducing workload.
- Use a stable 30 FPS when battery life matters, and match the display refresh rate to the chosen target as closely as the phone allows.
- Dim the display and prefer Wi-Fi, which Apple identifies as less power-intensive than cellular networking.
- Use Android Battery Saver/Data Saver or iOS Low Power Mode with the understanding that background work and downloads may be delayed.
- Perform initial downloads, patches and optional asset downloads over Wi-Fi.
- Treat heat as a warning: reduce frame rate and effects, remove insulation and pause if the phone stays uncomfortable.
