For the Steam version of Final Fantasy IX, start with the stock launcher, your display’s native resolution, and the default game-timing settings. Pick fullscreen or windowed mode based on which behaves better on your PC. If you want options beyond the stock launcher—such as widescreen support or higher frame rates—Memoria is an optional community project, not an official Square Enix utility.

Recommended starting settings for the Steam version

  1. Open the game’s launcher. Use the settings it provides before adding community software.
  2. Choose your monitor’s native resolution if it is available. Check both gameplay and cutscenes; if the image appears stretched or scaled poorly, try another supported mode and compare.
  3. Choose fullscreen or windowed mode by how it behaves on your system. Fullscreen is a reasonable first choice; windowed mode can be more convenient for switching apps or avoiding display-mode problems. There is no established universal performance winner.
  4. Leave game timing at its defaults initially. Avoid changing simulation speed simply to seek smoother visuals; presentation frame rate and game timing are separate controls in community configurations.

Steam describes the PC release as including high-definition movies and character models, but its store listing does not prescribe a universal resolution, filtering option, or graphics preset. This is not a modern PC game with a documented set of quality tiers to maximize.

When to use Memoria instead of the stock launcher

Memoria is an optional open-source community rewrite of Final Fantasy IX’s engine. Its project documentation lists features such as widescreen support, higher frame rates, and additional camera, rendering, controller, audio, and interface options. The project says primary options are available in its launcher, with deeper configuration in Memoria.ini. These are community-project features, not official Square Enix support. See the Memoria README and its release notes.

Approach What it offers Trade-off
Stock launcher The game’s built-in settings and no added community patch. Simpler setup, but fewer configuration options.
Memoria Additional project-documented options, including widescreen and higher frame rates. Requires community software; behavior and settings can vary by release.

Memoria’s release history is versioned: a prior release added V-Sync and an Auto FPS option that follows monitor refresh rate with V-Sync and is unlimited otherwise. Another release described support from 16:10 through ultrawide and recommended 16:9. A Canary release is dated September 28, 2026. Because options and behavior can change, check the current launcher and release notes for your installed version rather than copying an older Memoria.ini example.

Widescreen, FPS, and TPS: what to adjust

Resolution and aspect ratio

Native resolution is a practical starting point, not a Square Enix-mandated setting. A widescreen modification can use more of a wide display, while preserving the intended aspect ratio avoids stretching. Support may differ by Memoria version and scene; inspect the result in both gameplay and cutscenes. An unofficial Steam Community guide describes separate resolution/aspect-ratio and module settings, but its examples are author guidance and version-dependent.

FPS controls presentation smoothness

FPS is the presentation frame-rate setting. If you use Memoria and want to experiment, change it through the current launcher or documented configuration, then check movement, animation, and battles. Auto FPS and V-Sync behavior depend on the project version, so consult its current release notes rather than assuming a particular setting is available or enabled by default.

TPS controls game timing

TPS is a separate tick-speed setting in the community guide’s configuration examples; it is not a graphics-quality setting. That guide divides FPS/TPS values among Battle, Field, World, and Menu modules. Begin with defaults and avoid raising TPS on the assumption that it will improve visual smoothness: it changes a different aspect of game behavior.

Controller or keyboard: choose by preference

Steam lists partial controller support for the PC version. A controller is optional input hardware; it does not improve graphics or unlock display settings. Use whichever input method you prefer, and check Steam’s listing for the current support details at FINAL FANTASY IX on Steam.

What the published PC requirements do—and do not—tell you

Steam’s storefront lists the following requirements. They are publisher-listed legacy specifications, not a current independent performance benchmark or a guarantee about compatibility with every present-day system.

Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10 Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10
Processor Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz or higher Intel Core i5 2520 2.5 GHz or better
Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 8600GTS or ATI Radeon HD4650 or higher Not stated in the listing
DirectX DirectX 9.0c Not stated in the listing
Storage 7 GB available space 20 GB

The same Steam listing separately says the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. That client note is distinct from the game’s older listed operating-system requirements; neither statement should be treated as a modern compatibility assessment. See the Steam store listing for its published specifications.
